We had to wait a whole year for the next episode.
I don't know if you noticed but when the Doctor scans River with the sonic in a sort of playful way, I think it's actually to make sure the 10th doctor will be able to 'save' her in the library
He talks about this in his review at the end.
Watch the full video
exactly why they made it that way to close the time loop: so well done
The saddest thing about this episode is the chemistry between Alex Kingston and Peter Capaldi. And this is the only time we'll get it.
Even though i know we will never get it, i would LOVE a darillium spinoff
FR
Little gasp that River makes after 'Twenty four years' always breaks my heart and makes me tear up. Exeptional bittersweet ending, one of the best in it's own way.
How in the actual holy did you already pick it up with "haircut and best suit"?! Man, you are- wowww~
He cheats, he’s seen it before
You are definitely right about the final 10-15 minutes of the episode. It's some of the best moments from the show and the acting from both Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston is splendid. Also, the Doctor's reaction to when he steps inside the TARDIS is absolutely hysterical! No doubt one of the funniest moments from the show 😂
When River is saying the Doctor does not love her, I interpret the Doctor's expression as being surprised by this information. The scan after that, confirming that she was not lying when she said it, also surprises him. I think his surprise is the reason he went out of his way to make sure they had a nice time on Darillium. He may not say what he is feeling, but he is trying to communicate it by his actions. He went to a lot of work to get the setting just right for their time together. He knows that this is his last chance to let her know how he feels. A strange part of this story is that the reason HE knows it is their last time together is because River told him right before she died, right when they first met.
I think the Doctor accepts her death as inevitable because the timelines are too complicated for him to even attempt to change them. If River does not sacrifice herself when she does, the Doctor's timeline falls apart. His regeneration into 11 needs to be when it was - otherwise he won't crash during regeneration and meet Amelia, so then River will not be conceived in the Tardis - and that's just the most basic of the timeline issues.
Agreed, Doctor Who's writing used to be outstanding fiction.
You're the first reactor I've seen immediately clock the new haircut and best suit line. Nice! It was cool to see someone really thinking back to that 2 parter.
I adore this xmas special, sobbed like a baby watching it. My favorite one easily. River & the Doctor I adore to bits even as much as they make my heart ache.
"When the wind stands fair and the night is perfect, when you least expect it, but always, when you need it the most,
there is a Song."
Now that's an 'I love you' if I've ever heard one.
The Towers soundtrack is also one of my favorite pieces from the show too.
That was a good seven and a half years between setup and payoff.
"Two of you" is a reference to two minisodes featured on the series 6 boxset. First Night and Last Night are their titles, featuring the 11th Doctor and River trying to go out for dinner.
This special is so much fun at the beginning 2/3 or so, but once you get to that speech of River declaring her love for The Doctor but also how she doesn't feel it is reciprocated, the tide turns. I'm so glad you picked up so quickly on the haircut and best suit hinting to the conclusion, especially knowing your adoration for River and The Doctor's dynamic. The whole ending makes me tear up, and "when you least expect it, but need it the most...there is a song" makes me baul. Moffat had such a strong emotional punch with that line for me, really "book-ended" her story well
"when the wind stands fair and the night is perfect, when you least expect it, but always… when you need it the most - there is a Song."
"When you run with the Doctor, it feels like it'll never end. But however hard you try you can't run forever. Everybody knows that everybody dies and nobody knows it like the Doctor. But I do think that all the skies of all the worlds might just turn dark if he ever for one moment, accepts it. [...]
Now and then, every once in a very long while, every day in a million days, when the wind stands fair, and the Doctor comes to call... everybody lives."
That moment when he realizes River thinks he doesn't love her is just soul-crushing! You can just see it hurt him to hear that.
Capaldi and Kingston absolutely kill it in this episode, their chemistry is so perfect from the off that you actually forget this is their only episode together. These actors really sell the idea that they’ve known and loved each other for years.
I think it’s also really special for River to immediately accept 12 as soon as she realises he’s the Doctor. As we’ve seen with Rose and Clara, a regeneration is a hard thing for the Doctor’s friends to swallow straight away. But not River, the face doesn’t matter to her, as long as it’s the Doctor she will love them. Which, I think, goes some way to explaining why the Doctor loves her back; they’ve probably never been unconditionally accepted and loved like that since leaving Gallifrey.
I'm glad to hear you loved this... Yes, you will cry along every time... It's great that you remember so much of Silence / Forrest... I usually recommend to go back and watch it again in your own time... it is so well written together...
It's rare that a TV show can payoff such a long-standing plot point... let alone pay it off with that wonderful bitter-sweet feeling. It's a payoff that can't easily be matched simply because of the nature of this show and how it works.
Doctor: I need a bigger flow-chart 😅
When he scans her with the screwdriver after she opens it . . . We know it is to create the link to the tech hidden inside . . .
I love this episode so so much. It's alot of fun and has plenty of laughs, but also does a beautiful job of book-ending River's story and helping the Doctor move through losing Clara. Lighting is amazing too
"Always when you need it the most, there is a Song." The only person in the universe who could pick the Doctor back up after losing Clara. It's a beautiful episode and pairs nicely with the next one as a sort of coda to season 9. It would have felt wrong if we'd just moved on without the Doctor having time and space (no pun intended) to pause and reflect, so I'm glad we didn't.
The Doctor wasn't kidding when he responded to River's comment about this being it for them. River would go on to have quite the string of adventures with the Eighth Doctor, mainly in the Big Finish Audio series Doom Coalition, putting her screwdriver to good use. She also had a few solo run ins with different versions of the Master... :) :)
unfortunately...
@@phantomsidious2934what's unfortunate?
that she had to keep coming back@@jemaselite8076
Doom Coalition is so good, highly recommend for anyone who's not listened to it before (and you don't really need to have heard any other audios going into it, it works standalone).
I always saw the Doctors little speech about how when the wind stands fair there's always a song is a reflection of Rivers final lines from the library when shes reading to the children about the doctor
"How long is a night on Darilium?"
"24 years"
As someone who literally got into Doctor Who because of River and the Doctor, this is my all time favorite episode. Capaldi and Kingston have the best husband/wife energy out of every Doctor/River pairing. I'm so glad you also love River, and that you picked up on all the hints that we were near the end of her story. After watching this episode, if you go back and watch Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead, you will be emotionally wrecked.
I absolutely love the story of the Doctor and River Song.
Great reaction! Probably the only reactor that’s caught most of the important callbacks. Only thing you might’ve missed is many have a theory that when twelve sonic-ed River he was uploading the “imprint of her living consciousness” or whatever they call it to the sonic so ten could save her in the library 🥹
If you like Greg Davies, I whole-heartedly recommend the series 'The Cleaner.' It is such a perfect blend of comedy, drama, and poignancy. Greg is great in it as a crime scene cleaner. The Helena Bohnam Carter episode is absolutely fantastic.
I hadn't seen Greg Davies before this episode, but since then I've appreciated what he does on "Taskmaster" and "Would I Lie To You?"
If I remember right, moffat flirted with leaving the show a few times before he actually did. At one stage, this was going to be his last episode, and closing the River circle made a lot of sense.
Such a sweet episode =) I actually am not a big fan of River Song. She doesn't bother me at all, but I also don't feel much about her. And still, this is really cute. For me it works because I see more chemistry with Capaldi in just a few scenes than all her time with Smith. Too bad we didn't get more of them together.
I agree wholeheartedly. I quite liked River at first but did not really like the story they gave her. I never believed the romance with Eleven but loved these two together.
I don’t agree. Sure I love her with Capaldi, but she had great chemistry with Matt. Technically, in her Timeline the 11th Doctor is the last Doctor she sees
Considering that the doctor hates to settle down for a while, he just giving up adventures to spend 24 years in Darillium with her means a lot more than the words " i love you"
I think they missed a golden opportunity here to make the Doctor more emotional. he doesn't even shed a tear, even though River said in the library he cried and she didn't know why.
you are the only one getting that with the haircut and the suit. respect!
Bro WORDS cannot express how much i long for your final reactions to Vinland S2
POETIC NOTE: notice how River's diary starts off resembling 11's TARDIS then becomes all weathered and worn, resembling 10's TARDIS. Nothing of story importance there but thought it was cool to see.
They stuck the landing and gave us an emotionally satisfying ending to the most ambitious of character arcs.
The music from The Library when he gives her the gift gets me EVERY TIME Q.Q
Such a lovely episode. Just a fun adventure for River and the doctor but the last ten minutes or so are one of the most emotional scenes in Doctor Who. I love that when you find out they spend 24 years together it adds even more weight to the Forest Of The Dead and you truly understand why River wanted to sacrifice herself to save the doctor.
I'd love to know your overall thoughts on Series 9 and where it sits in your all-time Series ranking.
It's always been one of my favourites ❤
Yes there was a break - took us an entire year to get to Capaldi's final series.
Wow, what a journey we've all been on together, Im. Since the first episode 'Rose', up until now, I've loved and continue to respect every reaction and review you've taken your time to do. I really don't think there is anyone better IMO, the way you review the episodes is what sets you apart. What struck me about this episode is that you clearly remember or have recently seen again the 10th Doctor's story with River so well that you know all the lines! I know we're almost at the end now and that you want to take a break after the 12th Doctor's era, which is fair. Do you have any plans to react to the 60th specials next month anytime soon after their release, also to avoid spoilers? I don't think you need to see any of the 13th Doctor's era to watch. And tbh what you've heard about Jodie's era is the case for many I've heard from. In that it's the lowpoint for Who IMO, but I respect anyone's opinion that enjoys it too. As with anything, there's good things and bad things, I just think that when you compare that era to the others prior, it really falls far short of their standards.
River: "You're very quick."
Doctor: "Yes. For a DOCTOR."
River: "Yes." * gives him a pat, walks away *
Doctor: 🤨
River Song to Tennant: I hate you
Tennant (angrily): I know
River Song to Capaldi: I hate you
Capaldi (quietly): No you don't
Kingston and Capaldi have such good chemistry together I really wish we had more stories with both of them.
This is definitely one of my favorite episodes, love river and 12 together.
What a beautiful review. Very much enjoyed this! x
Yes, this is a jolly romp that suddenly becomes terribly serious. An incredible last section, which is a lovely end(?) to River’s story.
You absolutely must now go back to watch the Library episodes. It’s a deeply satisfying experience to see it all come full circle.
The last 15 minutes made this one of my favourite episodes I just love River and I loved the chemistry between these two just amazing
"Two of you" refers to 2 mini episodes (a two-parter) "First Night" and "Last NIght" featuring 11 and River and may or may not hint about them getting to Darillium....
I loved these two together. I much preferred River with Twelve to Eleven. I never really bought the romance with Eleven. These two felt much more believable.
I really enjoy listening to your analysis of the episodes, they are eloquent and insightful, thanks for sharing.
‘And they lived happily ever after’
Not only is it to reiterate that while ever after only means the amount you spend with the one you love, not eternity( 24 years for River and the Doctor) but I believe that it was Rivers last diary entry 😢
There was a year break from filming, so the next Christmas special was the next episode. Without giving anything away, there are a few subtle callbacks to this episode in the next Christmas special - let's see if you spot them before the end of that episode!
I just binged through all of your Doctor Who and am really glad to be back in this fandom =)
I also really love your reactions and on how many details you pick up on in the story, the filmography and the score! Happy to hit that Subscribe button!
This is my favourite Christmas Special. Your reaction was lovely!
This Ramon guy was a lucky bastard lol
Absolutely amazing... Loved this episode
It has been a joy to watch you go on this journey with one of my favorite tv character ever. Watching you falling in love with her the same way I did was the closest I'll ever get to re-experience it and I absolutely loved the ride ♥
A sad thing is that for the Dr 24 years is but a moment
It doesn't fall flat because it closes the loop.
The relationship between the Doctor and River is the best thing Moffat introduced to Doctor Who. It feels so authentic and natural, and I genuinely believe there is nobody in the universe better-suited to the Doctor than River. This episode never fails to make me tear up. Just wish there was a way to bring her back to the show, but at the same time I love this ending for their story
Definitely one of my go to Christmas episodes, its got the fun, and the emotion.
The episode always manages to make me cry
Love this episode!
I agre about the final minutes, but I think the whole thing is excellent, even if a lot of it is an absurd screwball comedy, it definitely grew on me on rewatches. It might not be better than Last Christmas/A Christmas Carol, but I happily put it in the third place position.
my all time favourite episode❤
U cut the Start off :( that's a funny beginning
You picked up on where this was going faster than any reactor I've seen. The episode itself was the closure that their story needed (though in Doctor Who, no door is ever truly closed), and as much as I loved 11 and River, Capaldi showed more chemistry with Alex Kingston in one hour than Smith did across three seasons and a handful of specials.
No he didn’t
Yes he did. Before you respond, please know that I helped to raise two little sisters and can keep this up indefinitely.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
River is my favourite character besides the Doctor. I cried like a baby during this ending, it was very bitter-sweet. And then I went back to the library episodes and I watches them again.... and it was heartbreaking for me to watch those episodes knowing who River is. Seeing her die and knowing how important character she is.
I agree with you that it's a good thing that the Doctor doesn’t ever say "I love you", not to River, not to anyone.
But you can see it in his manners. You can read it between the lines.
Also in the Name of the Doctor -episode when River asks Doctor to say goodbye:
"If you ever loved me say it like you're coming back"
And the Doctor does:
"See you around Professor River Song"
I really love the relationship arc that has been going on with the Doctor and River. In the quite beginning, during the angels episodes, the Doctor is still in denial. He believes that he can run from his future, River. He clearly at that time wants to dislike her and not know her. He probably believes by not getting to know her, he can prolong River's furure, her dying in the library. The Doctor does feel quite quilty about it, even though he didn’t know who River was. At the end of the Flesh and Stone he notices that he does like River and actually looks forward for their next meeting.
In this episode (and also in the Name of the Doctor) you can see that the Doctor has accepted River's fate. She is going to die in that library. They can still make the most of the time they still have left together, 24 years.
Its a pretty bland episode, with an absolutely BEAUTIFUL ending. Everything from "Hello Sweetie" is golden.
"Recommendation: chiiiiillllll...."
I just think they made River unbelievable unintelligent in this episode for no reason. It’s the classic sacrifice somebody’s characterisation because we want it to be a comedy
And 24 years is not ‘the last time I saw you’. Her final death bed speech is just a flat out lie after this episode
River lies to the Doctor all the time - we know this. Conflating spending 24 years together into 'the last time I saw you' is by no means the biggest of her lies and concealments. :D But I can agree to a degree about her being a bit dim him - though again, if you think you are CERTAIN of something it can make you very blind to evidence otherwise.
It's alays tickled me how the immensely complex events surrounding the Doctor being granted a new regeneration cycle is reduced to, "A thing happened." Thankfully it totally works within its own context, or that line could have easily sounded as cliched and lazy as, "somehow, Palpatine returned."
Um?? 40% of the video is your reaction and the rest is filler??
You must be new.
Don’t waste your time. He’s seen all of these before and faking the reactions. And as you can see he’s also not a nice human being
The optimal words being “Reaction & Review”. That “filler” is what the rest of us call “review”.
@@user-cr2bt3zp1f that wasn't actual review
Hopefully that's the end of River song in the show...
