You've mentioned before that these DW reactions just don't pull in big numbers on your channel; and I just wanted to take a pause to say "thank you" for carrying on with these videos anyway. I always look forward to these videos, and love to hear your take on the show and the characters. As we're winding down here with one more series, I just thought it was important to express some gratitude. It's been a fantastic ride.

I think one thing about his episode which can be missed is why a Superhero story for a Christmas episode? (with many thinking before it aired it was to cash in on Marvel film popularity, but it is instead clearly a tribute to the 1970's Christopher Reeve Superman film). And the reason it's a Superhero story has nothing to do with the actual episode content, not directly, but rather an odd UK TV scheduling quirk.
Back in the day the only way to see a film was a cinema or wait till it showed up on network TV, and it was expensive to get big films on TV. So they tended to be held for big holiday events, Xmas being the biggest one. And the Christopher Reeve Superman film was for many years a staple of the Xmas TV schedule, and that was the only time you would see it. On top of that, there were only 3 TV channels, so everyone saw them eventually at least a few times growing up.
I am also the same age as Moffat and so likewise grew up with this odd association between that film and Xmas.
So even though the Superman had nothing to do with Xmas, and this episode has so little to do with it may as well not be Xmas, it takes the form of a tribute to Reeves Superman film because it's Xmas! Its sort of a meta-narrative version of timey-whimey.

15:28 If I remember correctly, Nardole / Matt Lucas was just a one-off character in "Husbands" and then also in this episode. It wasn't until after "Mysterio" that he was announced to be recurring in Series 10. Similar to Donna but without the extra series in between becoming a legitimate companion.

Not sure why but I've always adored that one scene where the Doctor goes to confront the baddies, particularly the security camera rug pull reveal bit, just a tiny moment but brilliantly clever and inventive.

Dr. Who is nothing without it's cheesiness.
In regards to the "Dr. Mysterio" title it originated from mexico which is what the show is called over there rather than "Dr. Who" when Capaldi went to the Dr. Who convention in Mexico some one came up to Capaldi and called him "Ah your Doctor Mysterio" Capaldi loved it so much he asked for the title to be used for an episode title.
I like Nardole simply because he's a complete departure from companions we had before as most them have been human earth females it was nice to have a cyborg alien companion for a change but he's also used as a comic relief which I like.
It's not the greatest episode but it is certainly entertaining and alot of fun.

This episode is not exactly a stand out in all of Doctor Who, but I think it still is very sweet, basically a Doctor Who attempt at a Superman story and going into the genre is quite cool seem as Doctor Who throught the decades absorbed some superhero inspirations (for better or worse) seem this take in superman just feels a bit of a nice break between the heavy emotions of the last couple episodes

This episode or special is a complete outlier for me because I always forget it exists. I remember liking it for the most part especially the relationship between Young, Teenage, and Adult Grant and the Doctor. I recall laughing at an intruder being possibly shot in the back. And that's about it really. I had similar issues with the special only I do enjoy superhero stories except here it was basically over-cheesy and lacked originality. Nardal (I think his name is) is what got me thru Capaldi's last season barring, of course, #12 himself. Looking forward to your dive into Capaldi's final run!

So I love this episode because I've been a big fan of superhero media and this is a love letter to genre. I get that the plot isn't for everyone but for me, this is the best way to end this small arc. I also wasn't the biggest fan of Nardole here but looking back... spoilers...
I also want to say that now, I tend to watch the five episodes starting with Face the Raven to this one as one long over-arching story. Going through the stages of grief into acceptance:
Face the raven - Denial (the doctor isn't paying attention to Clara and that leads to her demise. In some ways, denial is ignorance, so to speak)
Heaven Sent - Anger (this should be pretty obvious, from his opening speech about what he'll do, to being isolated, which is how it can feel when consumed with anger)
Hell Bent - Bargaining (he tries to break time just to bring Clara back... easiest to place)
Husbands of River Songs - Healing (this is the longest shot of my theory because it should technically be depression but this is his part of healing. There are hints of depression, especially hinted in the time frame between the two)
The Return of Doctor Mysterio - Acceptance (it's clear that he is in a good place, having fun and running around with a smile. He is in a good place and is now the Doctor he was always meant to be)
Seeing the episodes in these ways highlights aspects of each episode. It makes Hell Bent far more enjoyable, being the center point as it shows the Doctor pushed to the edge instead of a season final. This was the arc 12 needed heading into his final season. It allowed him to mature to a point which made him the Doctor he was always meant to be. While season 8 is my personal favorite in New Who, I would say Season 10 is Capaldi's best run and it is because of the leg work put in previously.

    Thank you!!
The same happened to me with Nardole. I didn't like him in the Husbands of River Song, but I liked him in this one.
He can challenge the Doctor and call on his bullshit.
I love it how, in this episode, the Doctor is grieving for River. She was an important part of his life for a long time. River was also really liked character by the audience, so I feel like this is also for us, who are also mourning for the fact that she is now gone.
The ending was the best part of this episode for me.

  • @channyh.221B

For me, by this time the show had gotten already so much hate because it's 'to woke' that I didn't care whatever story they told me, if it gave me adventure, to boost my inner child that started watching this series 40-ish years ago, I would keep continue watching but I realize I can count my blessings for somehow still feeling that magic.
But I understand, when you are in another mindset, it doesn't work like that. But I hope you still manage to hold the brilliance of what this show actually is and stands for. Most of all, thank you for sharing your reviews with us.

this is the only capaldi episode I've never seen. I was pretty sick of the show by this point. Season 10 brings it back around though, it's a solid season. Still some silliness and low points, but generally much better than s7-9 in my opinion.

I feel like season 10, whilst it has some absolute bangers, just doesn't really feel like Doctor Who as much anymore?

    • @matthewjw98
      @matthewjw98 10 месяцев назад

@@dutchman8887 the only s8 episode I genuinely enjoyed was Orient Express. S9 Heaven Sent. For me, much of Moffat's era past S5 was convoluted. The SciFi elements were not at all engaging, instead opting to bludgeon the viewer with new rules and silliness in lieu of strong story telling.
For example I think World Enough and Time x Doctor Falls are the best Capaldi stories. The SciFi hook of time dilation in a long spaceship is simple and effective. The Cybermen are put to great use as well, we see how they are developed out of necessity to survive, and all the body horror hits well. We get my favourite character moment for 12 here too, as he simply tells the master to be kind for the sake of being kind. It's something I think many of us need to hear.
I didn't find many fun, thoughtful or moving elements in s8-9.

These were times when the BBC were going mega woke, there were a lot of casualties due to the BBC's "diversity and inclusion plan", yeah it's real, look it up, these truly were the dark times for TV in the UK as all other tv channels copied them, I don't watch any TV anymore, just these kinds of reactions to Dr Who for my "Fix", this coming season you're about to watch, was the last season I watched of Dr Who, thank you so much for everything you do.

    • @robvanriot

I think if you're a Doctor Who fan but you're against "woke" things you're kind of missing the point of the show.
