the final scenes of moffat christmas specials really are some of the best moments in the show. this episode is incredibly silly and cheesy, but the ending is so heartfelt and sad in addressing the loss of river that it’s worth it. twelve really was the doctor who (finally) learned how to accept loss, and his little speech at the end is beautiful. on to S10!
I really like this episode; it’s a nice, sweet little story that’s enjoyable on its own. I also appreciate that Moffat didn’t go for his usual deconstructive approach when writing a superhero, but wrote Grant as a nice, caring guy who does a lot of good
It's worth noting that the CG in this episode is intentionally a bit naff *because* this is a pastiche of classic superhero television. All part of the fun.
I love all the zany subterfuge, misdirection and outright lying by the two romantic characters in this episode. The romantic plot and dialogue (even the split-screens, even though that also is a comic book homage) is VERY reminiscent of the Rock Hudson - Doris Day films of the late 50s and early 60s. Where one person (or both people) try to "trick" the other into falling in love with them for some ulterior motive, only to find out they actually did fall in love with that person. "Pillow Talk" (1959) is one of these movies, and "Down With Love" (2003) is a parody of them.
I thought Megan might like this story. It's very silly in places, but it's all in fun. The only thing missing is Megan saying "That's inappropriate!" (which I'm going to head canon into the scene when the young soon-to-be Ghost confesses he can't make the x-ray vision stop!). And it shows some lovely heart at the end. And I'll disagree with Elliot on this one, which I rarely do, because I really enjoyed it. I think of it like a throwback to the Philip Hinchcliffe era. How would DW do Frankenstein? The Brain of Morbius. How would DW do The Mummy? The Pyramids of Mars. How would DW do a super hero, especially how would DW do Superman? Doctor Mysterio! For me it's on the short list (well, reasonably short list) of episodes I'm always ready to watch one more time, even by myself, just because they're fun.
I don't know if you guys noticed this, but at the end, when Lucy asks the doctor "What was her name?" the music changes to the theme music of "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead" and continues all they way through to the part where Nadol talks about River Song. It was a nice call-back.
Being half-Japanese, I find it hilarious that the Tokyo office has a clear view of both the Tokyo Tower and Mount Fuji, which is 62 miles away from the centre of the city. Not my favourite episode, since I'm not really a big superhero fan either, but it does have a couple of funny lines, and the ending speech that Capaldi gives is a very sweet and tender moment. Now onto series 10...
There are places in Tokyo you can see both Tokyo Tower and Mt. Fuji, though Fuji will never be as large or clear as here. I can see Fuji and the Skytree from my apartment, though in different directions, 60 miles to one, 9 to the other.
I love that you can actually see how 24 of just living with his wife balanced him out personality wise. He is the perfect middle between series 8 and series 9.
I just found your channel about a week ago and have been having the absolute worst time in lockdown so spent the week watching every single Megan Reacts and it honestly cheered me up so much. I must say it's hard to pick the absolute best one, but I think it's got to be Partners in Crime for two reasons. 1. Megan calling the Adipose Fat Babies had me cracking up, and 2. Her reaction to that Rose reveal was everything 😆 & no need to worry when it all ends Megan, you can just throw yourself into Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures and Class.
I like this one, the cringe is part of the superhero fun! Also it’s small but one of my favorite Capaldi moments is when he uses the sonic on the gun at the end lol 12th doctor in a nutshell
Favourite Megan reacts? Hopefully that will be the penultimate episode this season! :-D From previous episodes, my favourite has to be A Good Man Goes To War!!!
Nice reaction! If you all are good at math.. lol.. Grant was 8 when he became a superhero - here, he mentions that he is 32. 32-8 = 24. And later, at the end when the Doctor says "I was away for a while, and Nardole says "24" years - what a night.. So we see that Grant was protecting the earth for at least part of the 24 years that the Doctor spent with River on that last night.
Well, chances are that in the doctors timeline, he met grant, spent 24nyearsnin darillium, then went back to continue with ROTDM. So, HORS actually takes place during this episode
I don't mind this episode. It's not one of my favourites but also not one of my worst. It's a bit of fun. Yeah I was so glad I never watched the trailer after so I wasn't spoiled for the end of the next series. Can't wait to get to that.
I didn't really care for the next season in general, storywise. However, the calibre of the companion(s) is top notch. They are my favorite. The finale makes it all worth it. Epic doesn't even cut it.
@@tacobowler I am specifically referring to the companion(s) of series 10 amongst all companions. Trying to be careful about spoilers though until Megan sees who it will be.
@@greenpeasuit it was a good point. I was agreeing. And also trying not to spoil, even though I hope she didn’t go from January 10 - 31 without starting the next one!

More a pastiche of the Christopher Reeve Superman films, but yes
15:42: Take note; Nardole is flying the TARDIS. Not a lot of non-Time Lords can do this. Do not underestimate the Nardy!

I think this episode is a lot of fun. One of my favourite Christmas Specials

I agree. Nardole would be a great companion

thankyou for including the companion reveal (coming up)

Love your reactions. Excited to check this video out. Maybe I’ll put it on while I clean my room! Thanks for the upload and God bless you guys.
I enjoyed this episode honestly. It’s nice, and I really love the scenes at the end with the Doctor and Nardole talking about endings and River Song.
The title comes from the fact that Doctor Who is called Doctor Mysterio in Mexico.
Lmao I loved the start of this talking about how long it takes between series
Certain scenes and lines in this were lifted out of Superman: The Movie.

"That's Madeleine Mccann right there" well at least he took the kid to dinner unlike her parents....

Be happy you two, with or without the dr

DOCTOOOOOOOOOOOR!
This is a funn episode
I waited from 1989 to 2005 (unless you count that American movie). 18 months is nothing.

Companions are epic. They just haven’t made them quite like that in modern who.

Possibly my least favorite christmas special, bring on series 10!! 👍
Terrible episode
