    As others have said, the other picture is of Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter, who was left on Earth in the 22nd Century so no connections to her other than just being a companion (the first companion). Bill is a great and super underrated companion, so I'm glad you took to her so quickly. Very excited for this series' reactions.

    • @chiffon788
      @chiffon788 9 месяцев назад +12

      There's no concrete connection, but it's clear that the Doctor takes an interest in Bill because she reminds him of Susan - at least, that's what the cut to her photo before the Doctor says the "when you don't understand something, you smile" line signaled to me.

    • @lucasdolding6924
      @lucasdolding6924 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@chiffon788 I just saw it as he read that as a quality he appreciates in all his companions; that photo could’ve been of any previous companion and would’ve conveyed the same message. It reminded me quite a bit of The Rescue where Ian and Barbara suggest the Doctor take Vicki with them as she reminds them a bit of Susan and being a similar age to her will fill that gap in his life; Bill here fills that gap missing in the Doctor’s life and she has qualities that remind him of previous companions. I don’t remember there being anything in Hartnell’s era where he explains something to Susan and she smiles despite not understanding it, so I don’t think the line/photograph is supposed to be a direct comparison to Susan herself.

    • @petersvillage7447
      @petersvillage7447 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@lucasdolding6924 I would agree, except that the cut to the picture of Susan isn't necessary to support all of the other stuff that the Doctor says and, don't forget, there's a moment in a later episode where Bill literally claims to be the Doctor's grand-daughter. I still see Bill as a 'general companion' rather than a grand-daughter substitute, but there are a handful of little details that suggest we were being pointed toward the grand-daughter comparison, certainly including the picture of Susan.

    • @thewerewolff7248

      Should also be noted that various Audio stories have had her become aware of the time war and leave earth to participate in it. Various lines of dialogue in new who regarding the doctor’s family suggest that the doctor presumes Susan dead (though is not 100 percent sure)

    Some slight Easter eggs. Bill shares a name with William(Bill) Hartnell(1st Doctor) and Heather is the same name as Bill’s wife.
    Peter always wanted to do a story on Susan, the doctors granddaughter which is why she’s pictured in the Pilot. Lots of first Doctor references

    Something that is absolutely unique about series 10 that's already shown off in the first episode that I really love is the dynamic of our three leads here.
    We obviously have the Doctor, Capaldi being the fully realized incarnation of his Doctor after the events of both Clara's resolution and River's. He's finally "his" Doctor after the character arcs of series 8 and 9 (also Capaldi's Doctor as a professor is just perfect).
    Then there's Bill, the "new audience" surrogate as usual, but one thing I really love about her in particular is how differently she reacts to things as a knowledgeable person of fiction (her reaction to the mind wipe for example). She reacts to things with much quicker understanding, without sacrificing the sense of wonder. She has less confusion and less moments where you look at a companion's lack of understanding and roll your eyes because, yes, this isn't a thing/concept that exists in the real world, but its very popular in fiction, and shouldn't be that hard to understand. This also causes her to ask different questions to things that other companions wouldn't, or at least frame them in a completely different way.
    But the absolute surprise to me is Nardole, who sort of fits the "old audience" surrogate, which hasn't really been done before to my recollection (at least not beyond a simple guest starring role). He sort of mirrors those of us that have been watching the show for a while now. He knows the Doctor and understands him (well, at least as much as any of us could), he winces when he hears the Daleks because he knows what they are like we do, he gets happy alongside the Doctor when Bill mentions the "bigger on the inside" bit, like he's a fan waiting for that line to be said by the new companion, he feels confident enough to criticize the Doctor's actions due to how well he knows him just like how we criticize some choices the Doctor makes as outsiders looking in, but he still views the Doctor as the person in charge and respects him, like we do. I think its awesome that Moffat managed to take this character that's played by a comedic personality and was (and still is) basically the comic relief, and frame him in a way that allows him to take on a unique role of audience perspective.
    The combination of these three is not only fun, but new and interesting as it blends perspectives and accounts for both new and old fans of the show. I love it.

    So glad that you picked up on Clara's theme when the Doctor was confronted on mind-wiping Bill; it's a lovely little moment. This episode has a fair share of references to the past and the Doctor's recent character progression whilst managing to feel hugely fresh and a perfect jumping on point! It may be simplistic story-wise but it's all about the setup, refining Peter Capaldi's incarnation for this final stretch, endearing us to Bill, and establishing a great dynamic between the two of them.
    As others have pointed out, the photograph on his desk is indeed his granddaughter Susan. Aside from inspiring him to take the photos of Bill's mum, the Susan picture definitely feels like it's drawing comparison between her and Bill as both curious young people he has a fondness for, and plays the role of protector and mentor toward.

    I feel like this season 12 really comes into his own. His last regeneration and new cycle was a “whopper” like 11 said. It really was a shock to the doctors system. Then we had two years of the doctor and Clara and, although they cared deeply for each other they were a toxic match (as engineered by missy) Now him and Clara have parted ways, he’s said goodbye to river and settled for 24 years. It finally feels like he’s ready to be “his” doctor.

    The curious thing about S10 is that it was effectively an emergency series. Moffat was going to depart after S9 but Chibnall was tied up with Broadchurch and the gap between S9 and Chibnall being able to do anything was going to be far too long so Moffat stepped up so we wouldn't be without for an inordinate amount of time. And, now with hindsight, boy how we were blessed even if we didn't quite appreciate it quite as much at the time. That said, whilst I like S10 as a whole (it drags a bit in the middle - people will know what I'm referring to), as reaction videos it can be a bit of a slog between Husbands of River Song and the end of S10. However, here, I'm really looking forward to it because FB picks up on things so much better than most.

    @williammobley9634 9 месяцев назад

    Is there a connection between the black-and-white photo companion and Bill? That's a good metaphorical catch. Although this Doctor has had a companion before in the form of Clara, she's a holdover from Matt Smith's 11th Doctor. But Matt Smith was the 12th Regeneration (if you include the War Doctor and the Clone/Human Doctor). Capaldi is the FIRST Doctor of a whole newly added regeneration cycle.
    The girl in the black-and-white photo was Susan, the First Doctor's First Companion (and also, technically, his granddaughter). At this point Nardol isn't actually a Companion. He's there with an assigned purpose...which you'll find out later in the series. So, Bill is the First Doctor's First Companion of this lifecycle. And, he takes her on like a student, like a granddaughter of sorts...roles he served with Susan.

    The Dalek contract thing is a fan myth, specifically denied by Moffat and easily disproved by The Writer's Tale (which is compiled from emails sent at the time) when RTD doesn't know that Moffat is planning Daleks for series five and so plans to include them in The End of Time - changing his mind when he finds out about Moffat's plans. If the contract existed then RTD would not have made those plans.
    The only evidence for its existence has been that it just about fits a pattern (if you squint). But Daleks are also really easy to get out of storage (or to get the 3D CGI model to use) for a cameo.

    No connection between Bill and the Doctor's granddaughter, other than maybe a metaphorical one, like she reminds him of his granddaughter...somehow. (Personally, I don't see it. Susan wasn't that similar to Bill, but hey, I'm not her grandparent. Maybe he sees something I don't.)

      And I'm so glad you like Bill. She is just such a ball of sunshine.

    Don't worry too much about spending a lot of time on Bill's sexuality.
    Oh, the actress who portrays Bill's mum in the pictures is the coffee shop girl from "Free Guy", if you've seen that.

      It’ll be a while but I definitely can’t wait for your reactions and insight to those episodes.

      "White man bad." The Doctor is literally a white man, you helmet. Some people are gay. Deal with it.
