Moffat nailed it. He had a needle to thread and managed it. He resolved the Time War arc without removing the guilt from 9 onwards that drove some their actions, but also potentially saved Gallifrey for the future. Moffat famously one said that he loved to create an impossible cliffhanger and then write himself out of it. As a viewer, we can see sometimes it doesn't quite come off, but when he nails it, it's glorious (Big Bang, I think was what he was referring to at the time).

To be honest, I still feel the episode should have ended with Ten and Eleven helping him do what he had to do so he didn't have to do it alone. Once they decide to retcon everything, the episode starts falling apart. Well, except for the very, very end. They could have skipped the retcon nonsense and went straight from where it should have ended to the bit with Ten and the War Doctor saying goodbye, and the Curator coming in.

Stephen Moffat, in an interview said that when he realized that he was going to be the show-runner for the 50th anniversary, he said that he felt a great responsibility to produce a great episode - and he came through. The War Doctor was created primarily because Eccleston did not want to participate in the 50th. But John Hurt, who nailed the pathos of the War Doctor, was a great casting decision. He shared that he didn't have much time to decide to take the role - so glad he did.

    • @jacobcurle8964

John Hurt was spectacular as the War Doctor of course, but I really feel it was such a shame Paul McGann didn’t get a shot in this episode. I just feel like the way the War Doctor was written would have worked so well with McGann’s performance!

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles Год назад +3

John Hurt was great in his role, but the role should never have been made. It should have been Paul McGann, the Eighth Doctor. There was so much Moffat could have done with Eight, considering that he claimed to be such a fan of the full-cast audios that Big Finish had been doing. I kinda feel bad for Big Finish, too. They worked so hard to bring the Doctor to the point in his life where he could psychologically be okay with blowing the hell out of the Daleks. They wove such a gorgeous storyline between the Doctor, his friends and family (yes, familly...long story) and the Daleks. And then Moffat just crapped all over it, and thought that it would be compensated for by...namechecking Eight's audio companions? I mean, I loved that Eight got to say Charley's name once more before he regenerated, but still...even that minisode shat all over all of the character development Eight went through by making Eight say he'd rather die than fight. Not at that point in his life he wouldn't! Not after everything the Daleks had done to him and his at that point.
Like I said, so much to work with, but as always with Moffat, he wants to be the one said to have created a Doctor. He wanted all the glory for himself, so he turned his back on Eight and Big Finish, and made the War Doctor. But...like I said, I liked John Hurt's performance as that Doctor. I just hate that the War Doctor existed in the first place.

That line about the TARDIS, and how the noise it makes brings hope - I always think that's a little message to the fans. You can be going through the worst of times, but you can throw on an episode of Doctor Who and hear that sound, and suddenly there's hope. You're absolutely right about Paul McGann, he's tremendous in that prequel. You'll find that no matter who plays the Doctor, they're always the Doctor. The core of the character always remains.

Glad you liked it! Moffat definitely hit the landing. You are right that the Curator is the Fourth Doctor (the wonderful Tom Baker). He is the most iconic Doctor of all - the longest serving and hugely popular. I grew up with him and for me, like many, he will always be THE Doctor. A brief mention of Night of the Doctor as it was fantastic in so many ways. The actor is Paul McGann (as the Eighth Doctor) who was in the TV movie. He is great and it was nice to see him finally get a chance to reappear as the Doctor (having done lots of Big Finish but just the one appearance on screen). It also provides a nice bridge between Classic and New Who (as the Eighth is considered a Classic Doctor). It also does a great job at showing the impact and the stakes of the Time War - it is so bad that people regard Time Lords and Daleks as equally bad. Finally, it is important because it shows us the War Doctor's creation. Anyway, look forward to the next episode. Get the hankies ready!

SO glad you finally got to this. I look forward to any reactor on RUclips watching Day of The Doctor because it's the closest ai can get to re-experiencing my first time watching it again, seeing the joy for someone else watching it for the first time.
You're right that 2013 was a very exciting year. In January there was a charity convention in Slough here in the UK, featuring 5 Doctors - Tennant, Peter Davison (The Fifth Doctor, and also, Tennant's father-in-law), Sylvester McCoy (The Seventh Doctor and the first Scottish Doctor), Colin Baker (The Sixth Doctor) and Paul McGann (The Eighth Doctor who you see in Night of The Doctor, who at that point had only ever appeared once onscreen - he was The Doctor for the TV Movie in 1996, which was an attempt to relaunch the show in an American co-production - unfortunately while the Movie got record viewing figures on BBC One in the UK, it didn't do anything like as well in the States, and so most of Paul McGann's run is in audio dramas for Big Finish Productions, who the BBC gives license to to make audio productions with Past Doctors and characters).
Anyway, this charity convention was immense, my parents bought me a ticket for my birthday and I got a photo with 4 out of 5 of the Doctors in attendance (Colin Baker was rehearsing for a play so wasn't available for the morning photoshoot).
Meeting them all was a pleasure and so thrilling. Then Series 7 resumed at Easter - I didn't enjoy most of Series 7 Part 2 as much but I loved everything from the Neil Gaiman episode onwards that year.
In November, the anniversary month, the BBC broadcasted loads of special programming to celebrate the show - documentaries on the science of Doctor Who, on the history of the show, doing a repeat of the first ever episode from 1963...
For most of the year, Moffat told us that Tennant was the only returning Doctor and the Classic Doctors wouldn't be featuring in any way, which was a disappointment to Classic Who or All-of-Who fans like myself. Most of the living Classic Doctors expressed disappointment, and Peter Davison, the 5th Doctor, even wrote and directed a comedy sketch about them trying to find their way into the 50th, alongside Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy and Paul McGann.
But then on Paul McGann's birthday, a week before the anniversary, the BBC dropped Night of The Doctor (it was apparently about to leak) - fans were BEYOND excited for him to get a mini episode as he's brilliant in the TV Movie but really developed his performance on audio over the years, and it shows with his performance in Night of The Doctor with such a fantastic script.
On the weekend of the anniversary itself, the BBC held a massive convention, with actors and stars of the show old and new. There was a panel with Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and Steven Moffat, and the director (Nick Hurran, I think?) to promote the Special for the first 2 days and discuss it the day after (the last day of the convention on the Sunday was the day after the broadcast).
There was a Classic Doctors panel with Doctors 5-7 on the Friday and Sunday, but on the Saturday, the day itself, and the day I went, Tom Baker, the 4th Doctor, with the scarf, was also there (he's the oldest and so 3 days might have been a bit much!). At that point the episode hadn't broadcast yet, so we had no idea he'd actually be in it that night!
There were also lots of smaller panels with past companions, directors, writers, producers and celebrity fans, and the chance to meet them through photo booths, autograph signings or catching them for selfies after panels.
On the anniversary day when I went, then at the last minute clearly someone realised that a lot of people would want to watch the Special having been at the convention all day - the week it was happening they announced a special screening in the main hall with whatever crew from the show were still there at the end of the day. About 2,000 of us sat and watched Day of The Doctor for the first time, and we laughed, cried and cheered at several moments throughout. I remember someone screaming 'That is NOT OKAY' when Tennant said 'I don't want to go' again, the loud laughs at all the jokes, and the audible gasps and cheers when All 13 Doctors - including Capaldi - turned up to save Gallifrey, and the particularly audible gasp when the camera cut round to Tom Baker, and so many of us, myself included, burst into tears of sheer joy.
My reaction was nothing compared to my Mum, though. My family stayed at home and watched the Special on TV, but my Mum made fish fingers and custard (the fish fingers actually being the sort of cakes that Smith ate on set), and Sonic Screwdriver glow-in-the-dark cocktails for herself, my Dad and brother and sister.
My Mum and Dad had grown up as kids watching Doctor Who - as children in the UK in the 70s, pretty much everyone of their generation did - and when I came out of the screening, I had a message from my Mum saying how much she was sobbing with joy at seeing HER Doctor, Tom Baker, on screen again.
Sadly, Christopher Eccleston had been offered the chance to return, and although he had indicated since he left the show that he didn't want to go back for the 50th, he was very generous with fans of the show. The British Film Institute put on a series of screenings every month of 2013 featuring each Doctor in order with a select story, and though Eccleston couldn't make the Ninth Doctor screening that September, he sent a letter to be read out for the audience, which was published online, talking about how grateful he is to the fans and how much he loved playing The Doctor and working on the particular story they were showing.
Eccleston also agreed to meet Moffat to discuss possibly returning, and after careful consideration, still turned it down. But he later said more recently that he feels vindicated in that decision - he felt the bit of the script Moffat had written to show him wasn't quite right for his Doctor (possibly down to Moffat feeling that though he wanted Eccleston and felt duty bound to try and persuade him to do it, he suspected it would still be a no, and so might have been thinking of this idea of a previously unknown Doctor in the back of his mind).
Eccleston said he felt vindicated because he felt Doctor Who, and Day of The Doctor, were much better for having John Hurt in it, who he was such a fan of. A few years ago Moffat did publish the short bit of script he wrote with Eccleston in mind, which was the beginning of the scene of The Doctor in the barn with The Moment (although at that point, he hadn't decided he wanted Billie Piper to play The Moment, and I think was considering getting Surrane Jones back who'd played The TARDIS in human form in The Doctor's Wife, or a completely new actor).
Sorry, a lot of information there, but this Special and the time and history leading up to it was so fascinating! Really hope you enjoy all that comes next.
Just to say, if you don't get to be all caught up in time for the 60th, I'd recommend not watching Jodie's last episode in full - you're better off just watching the regeneration on RUclips and going into the 60th relatively fresh. Jodie's last episode has a lot of plot threads that are from the rest of her run so will probably be a bit confusing to watch if you haven't seen the rest of it at that point! Whereas my understanding is that the nostalgia in the 60th won't relate as much to her era as it's only just finished, so the 60th will probably be easier to follow even if you aren't all caught up by then than following Jodie's last episode!

The man who played the Doctor in Night of the Doctor was Paul McGann, the Eighth Doctor. Who, if you take into account all of the expanded media, was the longest reigning Doctor - he was the current Doctor from 1996 to 2005, so nine years. Until Night of the Doctor he only had one on-screen performance - the TV movie in 1996, and the majority of his era was a series of comics, novels and audio dramas. And his audio stories are _fantastic_ . I've only listened to his first series, but it instantly put him around the top of my favourite Doctors list. If RTD does do a whole Whoniverse full of spin-offs for his return, I'd love a TV series following the Eighth Doctor. He deserves some screentime.

I found your channel a few weeks ago after someone in the subreddit for Dark mentioned you for having some of the best reaction videos to that show. And after binging your Dark videos (which were absolutely amazing btw) I saw that you also do videos on my other favourite show. So I watched your entire catalogue of Doctor Who vids in just under a week so I could be here on time for the 50th anniversary!
And what an amazing journey it has been so far to re-experience my two favourite pieces of television with someone like you. Someone who's so incredibly attentive and perceptive, someone who notices all of the small details and really gets DEEP into the shows. Yours is one of the few reaction channels where I watch the discussion portion in its entirety every time.
While it's a shame that Eccleston didn't return for this, I am so happy we got the privilege to witness the late great Sir John Hurt in this role. And the good news is, he also recorded four entire box sets of Big Finish audio dramas, all set in the Time War. So if you want, there is more of John Hurt's War Doctor out there!
Tom Baker's cameo appearance is so special. Even on my first watch with very little knowledge of Classic Who I could feel the weight. But now, having seen all of it, it hits me even more. Especially because the Fourth Doctor is easily my favourite of them all, Classic and New Who combined.
And you're right, he's even more alien than Eleven. Four is by far the strangest, least human-like incarnation of the Doctor. And the craziest thing is: Tom Baker wasn't even acting when he played the part. He really is just that strange and weird and whimsical and wonderful! May be stay in good health for a long time to come. He just turned 89 today.
I don't think Eleven actually rewrote anything about the Time War. I believe that he really never killed the Timelords. It's just that whenever the Doctor meets themself, their timelines get out of sync and only the oldest version can actually remember everything that happened. So once the War Doctor goes into his Tardis and regenerates, he forgets most of the details of what actually happened at the end of the war. He forgets about meeting his future incarnations. And so Nine is left in a universe where the Time War is over and there are no more Timelords or Daleks left. He does remember the Moment and seeing as he is the sole survivor of all this, he understandibly thinks he's the one who ended it all. It isn't until he relives those events for a THIRD time that he actually realises what really happened.
About how long the War Doctor spent in the Time War, my theory is 400 years from his own perception. And this makes the Doctor's age quite interesting. Eleven is about 1,200 years old at this point, the War Doctor is 400 years younger, so 800. And that tracks, Nine is 900 at the start of Series 1, so he would have had about 100 years in that incarnation before meeting Rose. Incidentally, Ten actually lived for only six years, making him by far the shortest-lived incarnation of them all.
But here's the problem: All of this collides with Classic Who. The First Doctor stole his Tardis when he was 236 years old. Two once mentioned being something like 450 years old, Four claimed to be around 750. And now here's where it doesn't add up. Seven says he's 953 just hours after his regeneration. That's already older than Nine. Spin off media provides a possible solution: Eight at one point calculated his age to be 1,012 but was very unsure and might have lost count. So he decided to reset his age and start counting from his most recent regeneration which made him three years old by that count. And that's the headcanon I choose to go with. Eight lives for about 400 years before turning into War, War fights for 400 years, Nine spends 100 years before meeting Rose, etc. It does contradict one story where the Eighth Doctor seems to spend 600 years on one planet but whatever. Doctor Who canon is broken anyway.
In my personal headcanon, the Doctor is always actually around a thousand years older than they say. All because Eight lost count when he was just over a thousand and started again from zero.
The actual truth is probably that the Doctor has no idea how old they are anymore. It's kinda hard to keep track as a constant time traveler.
Not long now before you get to Capaldi, my personal favourite NewWho Doctor! And it's also where Clara begins to REALLY shine!

I'm so happy to hear your praise of the Eighth Doctor played by Paul McGann. Until "The Night of the Doctor," his only on-screen appearance was a 1996 TV film which was their first attempt at a reboot. The lack of Eight Doctor visual media is so frustrating and painful. There are many audio dramas that delve into his character, but I have a difficult time connecting with that medium.

I'm here just to let you know that after all the 'backlash' Chibbs era got during his first season, I (and Russel T. Davies apparently) still enjoyed watching this show, the adventures, not every episode being mind-blown or even a miss, (remember the first seasons?) but also great adventures (though sometimes having the feeling there could have been more to the story) and it never felt like a waste of my precious time.
Then again, I still like watching 'Love and Monsters' and most 'fans' hate that episode, so I probably watch this show from a different perspective.
By now you also have the answers to your questions, it IS a great episode, we watched it with the kids, their friends, the girl from next door even brought fishfingers and custerd, about 14 people in my living room, some completely dressed up (ofcourse with fezzes and sonic screwdrivers) and the 23rd of november 2013 is a big monumental evening we still hold dear.

Paul McGann, the Eighth Doctor, is still the longest-running Doctor, despite being the shortest lived on TV. Thanks to Big Finish (with Nicholas Briggs, voice of the Daleks since the show came back in 2005, as executive producer), the Eighth Doctor came back to audiences in audio play form back in 2001 in the lovely audio play "Storm Warning", and has been running stories multiple times a year ever since. That's 22 years of Eighth Doctor goodness that contains two of my favorite companions to ever exist, Charlotte (Charley) Pollard and Lucie Miller. They feel almost like proto-Rose and proto-Donna, with Charley being the clever young woman he found to be a good partner that he eventually fell for and then lost in a rather complicated way, and then Lucie is the best friend he found later on who's the loud, brash lady who has no qualms with putting the Doctor in his place when he starts feeling a bit up himself, who he then also loses in another very complicated and Doctor Who-y way, leaving him alone and devastated.

41:44 My opinion is basically every single thing you already said. Moffat had an incredibly difficult task and made it better than I could have imagined. John Hurt was brilliant. Paul McGann was equally great in the prequel (how does _Night of the Doctor_ have a full episode's worth of depth in just 6 minutes?!). My only complaint, maybe, is that Clara is a completely different character than she was in past episodes. But of course the 50th needed to focus on The Doctor(s), not on Clara, so her transition after finishing the Impossible Girl arc really had to be off-screen.
There was debate at the time as to whether Tom Baker (Fourth Doctor / Curator) was a future Doctor re-using one of his old faces or the past Doctor having another part of his story that he would forgot about later. Given 42:37, it's pretty clearly the former.

Bad Wolf Rose Interface + “all THIRTEEN /cut to attack eyebrows” personally my top2 things abt this episode :) 12’s split second appearance is one of the hypest thing ever in this show. Brilliant idea, whoever thought to write it in. And Billie Piper is just fantastic here. The only thing that could have topped those two things is if we saw the Doctor regenerate into Nine. How amazing would that have been?ahh how I wish it had been Nine in this episode instead of Ten. After all, Nine was the direct successor of the War Doctor. Nine’s reaction to seeing the War Doctor would have really been something fascinating and no doubt very painful. Okay and also: Nine + Bad Wolf Interface Rose; I wanted to see those two together soooo much. Bad Wolf existed after all because of Nine, because of Rose’s love and wish to protect him . (“I want you safe, my Doctor.”) And the idea of Rose as a representation of the Dr’s conscience is a concept that’s more meaningful and connected to Nine. So seeing their characters/actors on screen together would have really been more impactful and meaningful, for me anyway. I respect CE’s choice, of course, it’s just that the heart wants what the heart wants 🥲💔
