This was a fun one. Properly creepy villain and great Clara moments. Really establishing her dynamic that she’s addicted to it all and she’s now trying to emulate the Doctor. Kinda breaks the usual companion mold, and I’m here for it. Great reaction as always.
Exactly. Its kinda underrated cuz some just dismiss it as filler.
I think the lines "That's how you think, isn't it?" and "Largely so other people don't have to." and the look on the Doctor's face are soooo interesting. He's clearly growing increasingly worried about Clara.
The Doctor doesn't consider himself good. He does what he needs to do to win against the baddies, but it involves lying, manipulating and sometimes destroying things and people. So, I don't think he likes seeing Clara getting excited about being in his shoes. He knows where that path leads.
another really good episode from mathieson. two back to back quality episodes in a row from a first timer is very impressive.
This whole series has delved into the question "Is the Dr a good man?" So that last line he gives Clara always gives me chills
Christopher Fairbanks is a terrific actor. With not many lines he really makes you hate this unpleasant, uncompassionate council worker. And it’s of course ironic that he didn’t get killed off by the ‘Boneless’. He does a similarly brilliant job in his longer run appearances in the ‘Auf Weidersehn, Pet’ series as Moxy, on the surface an unlikeable Liverpudlian thief, some time arsonist and all round ‘dodgy geezer’, who ultimately you can’t help but like..
The look Clara gives 12 when she tosses him his screwdriver is the most adorable thing in the world
There is a story behind his hair style change. Peter was wandering around the abandoned train station on his own between takes, looking for food (so he jokes). The сrew were looking for him when he showed up completely soaked. He had wandered down a dark room, saw a red button and pressed it. It was emergency shower. :D So his hair looks kinda flat because they didn't have time to properly dry/style his hair again, they had to wrap up really quick.
Think you're mixing up stories there - it's just that there was a break in bits of filming and Capaldi had a haircut in between!
@@henrymendoza8295 I don't think I'm mixing up things. His hair has only grown longer with each season, even if you look at it at fan conventions and during interviews between seasons, it's has always been longer, never shorter. Sorry I don't remember a story about his haircut during a break.
I really like this episode. The concept of the creatures, the whole unknown element to it, like you said, is what makes it so fascinating and terrifying. Midnight still covets that no.1 creepy spot for me though, I swear sometimes even now I'll look out a dark window and suddenly feel like some unknown terror is running at my direction 😬😂 Clara is amazing and having an interesting character arc, Capaldi is magnificent, fantastic stuff as usual. I only have praise for this duo. And the Missy tease. You're 100% right, she'll absolutely steal the thunder whenever she's in a scene. Can't wait to see more of her again.
The creatures must have the power to change the dimensions of Capaldi's hair.
The speech at the end of this episode is when Peter Capaldi became the doctor for me
I love this story, and to be frank, its one of the only times I've genuinely found doctor who profoundly disturbing. The way they showed people flattening out and the nervous system on the wall, is really horrifying. Beautifully shot, and I also love Clara's development here. I guess a difference between her and the doctor is that he's suffered many losses and knows how that feels.
This was filmed right by my house
So was sound of the drums shops scences. Same subway in this and sound of the drums.
Regarding your theories, I'll quote something River told Amy in season 5:
"You're good, I'm not saying you're right, but you're good."
This episode gives me series 1 vibes and I love that
Or an old Timelord - there was a Classic Who Timelady called the Rani - who was on the darkside.
There was also a TImelady, Romana, who was lightside - could have gone bad - there are many possibilities.
The Corsair did indeed have a female incarnation.
Interested in how you feel about the next episode
And, as I can see you've gotten to Dark Water - how you feel about that reveal.
Love all the TARDIS gags.
The older guy (supervising the community service) is the same actor that Batman dangles off the side of the building in Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film.
I have a “siege-mode TARDIS,” it makes for an excellent paper weight.
I love this episode. Great, unique monsters are what Doctor Who does best and these ones are fantastic.
The commentary is interesting, because one of the upcoming episode is titled The Magician's Apprentice
9:20 reference to the William Shakespeare episode in season 3, names have meaning.
At the end the Doctor was talking about her ego. Remember that for the following Episodes!!
One of s1’s standouts! First, one of the most unsettling DW villains. Second, 12’s “I name you the boneless” speech. It’s the kinda speech we’ve seen past Dr’s give in their first episode, because they so easily fit into their new skin/face/role. But we’ve seen that that’s been a struggle for 12. His “The Speech” was 9 episodes in the making and so it feels VERY earned imo. Third, Doctor Clara. I think it’s hard for this particular Doctor to give Clara the acknowledgement she craves for being a “good Doctor,” because this Doctor is so attuned to the difference between a “good Doctor” = a Doctor that is morally good vs “a good Doctor” = a Doctor that is good at being the Doctor (someone who saves the day but likely at great costs). He is concerned that Clara wants so bad to be acknowledged as the latter. That’s not the Clara who almost left him for good at the end of Kill The Moon. It’s the Clara who lied to both Danny and the Doctor at the end of the last episode, who talked about traveling thru time and the cosmos as something akin to an addiction. It’s such an interesting element to bring up into their already complex relationship. We’ve gone from the Doctor needing Clara to guide and ground him and occasionally slap him; to now Clara needing the Doctor to curb her inner Doctorness. It’s like they’ve both strayed im different ways from the person they were when they first met each other, and they both have the unspoken role of caring and grounding each other, all while they individually are trying to figure out who they are (the Doctor) and who/what they want (Clara). “Duty of care.”Like you said, Clara’s character journey is quite unique, and on the flip side so is this Doctor’s, and thus their Dr/cmpn relationship is unlike anything we’ve seen in DW and imo that’s what makes the 12 and Clara era the most interesting and thought-provoking. Their relationship really elevates the show in new ways.
One more underrated episode.
I look at the character rather than the actors.
Ncuti is fire.
So yeah, there's both of Jamie Mathieson's contributions for Series 8. I'm wary of bigging him up too much because I don't want to set expectations, but I was really hoping he'd pick up more showrunning capabilities whilst Chibnall was in charge so he could take over. Mathieson seems to 'get' Doctor Who in the same way Russell and Moffat do (they may differ in overall style but it's undeniable that they understand what makes good Doctor Who).
I love this episode, but I wish they'd aired it earlier in the season because Twelve was kept waiting until episode nine for his first proper "I am the Doctor" moment. I'd never picked up on that piece of the score being from The God Complex before, great spot!
The 11th did mention that a time lord called The Corsair regenerated into a woman, and "Oooh, she was a bad girl!",
