Great video! But I think it might worth mentioning that the shaft can be changed without removing the gate? Since sticks like the silent JLF might get damaged if the gate is removed
I actually dont know the real reason behind it, it might be a manufacture secret, if u check the website on let say, focus attack, if u look for the silent sanwa jlf, it actually warns u, if u remove the gate, it breaks the stick. Which i did remove it and it doesnt work, becuz i like to test things out, i gotta play with it more to see
@@Evoskylution17 it’s not in the video but it’s a quote from the manufacturer sanwa, I think it might be the switches they used are more fragile than normal ones so they made this claim?

Hey dude, I hope you are okay and doing well. It has been a while since you have updated, but I understand that things can come up and can and should be your top priority. I just wanted you to know that your videos have been and continue to be informative and helpful for a complete scrub such as myself. Wishing you the best.
You are a life saver I am in the middle of building two arcade sticks but feel like the semitsu shaft size was too short I just randomly watched this video and saw you mentioned the shaft extender I never knew that was a thing this should solve my problem.
Great guide, thanks. I have big hands and have been considering getting a longer shaft but didn't know what kind of work it would take to fit. I didn't even know there were extenders available though, so now I have ordered one of those. Keep up the good work.
Smaller hole, bigger hole, shaft sizes, damage to the shaft, shaft cover. What kind of video did I come across? "It is cheaper to replace a plastic shaft cover than to replace a brand new shaft" I bet it is.
I am going to get a second Hori RAP V for the Switch one of these days, and have thought of numerous customizations i would like to experiment with (different spring on stock joystick, larger actuator, octagonal gate, different joystick altogether, etc) so this episode arrived in literally the perfect day for me! Thank you very much, and keep up the good work!
I recently modded my wayfair computer desktop with 30mm holes and a 26mm lever hole and put hardware in it plus wallmounts to have what basically amounts to a desktop arcade cabinet. Since the desktop was a little thicker I went with a long shaft for my JLF and an extra stiff spring and it all turned out perfect. Highly reommend if you have a spare computer desk laying around to convert it into a stick desk :P you can wrench on it as hard as you want and its not going to go anywhere, just like the old arcade cabinets.
This video is super helpful and I've referenced it (and some of your other videos) many times. I've been working on a one handed joystick mainly for playing SNES RPGs. I know it might seem like overkill to make a controller just for that, but I have issues with my hands and can't use a d-pad for very long. I started modding my 8bitdo Arcade Stick based on your video and I kind of got into modding and building custom arcade sticks. It's a fun hobby and the parts are cheap! Thanks for all the valuable info!
I have to stop watching your show. Since I have started, I bought a 8bitdo arcade stick, full set of Sanwa Buttons, Sanwa Jlf stick, female to female 5 pin cable, 4lb spring, 8 way gate. Now I am looking at a short shaft, plus a bat handle. :-) Great videos, I really enjoy watching these, I learnt so much after watching them . I was able to fully mod my stick that I loved, but was not used to due to the cheap parts.
It was an interesting video about .... SHAFTS ... I use the stock Sanwa shaft for fighting games but I like the stock Seimistsu LS-32 shaft for shoot em ups and beat em ups.
Do you also experiense a weaker input when you start on the left side of the match in sfv ? I noticed when my balltop got loose when playing a match i had more comfort for input in combo's.. i think a bigger shaft is better for me ?
@@JoystickNY i only have trouble with dp and critical art motion on the left side.. but i found this technique on youtube that you can do a dp in a fireball motion. Holding down forward and then back down and down forward Iam gonna try it later. ;) I wonder do u use any shortcut for dp ?
No short cut, i try to do everything as official as possible, becuz it will help with your over all input and growth. Shortcut takes the same amount of time and energy to do also, you can technicaly do a dp and doing down forward , down forward twice, but it doesnt feel smooth to me
I'm really looking forward to the end of "Mod Your Level" series since I want to have all the knowledge before I order different parts and start modding my stick. Thank you for amazing videos.
Was always intimidated by sticks until I found this channel. That was what kept me playing only Smash Bros. Now tomorrow I am ordering my first stick and am ready to drive into other games. Thank you for your videos, they helped me out a lot.
The Sanwa JLF with the short shaft reminds me of the joysticks on the old Nintendo arcade cabinets... And the closest thing to the joysticks in the old Nintendo arcade cabinets is the JLF with the octagon gate, add the LS-33 spring inside the JLF spring, and the Kowal actuator... Oh, and the 30mm balltop...
I was gonna keep my shaft cover off cuz I kind of like it without but then you brought up the points for having it. Maybe in the future I'll take it off but for now I'll keep it on
One thing I appreciate about extended shafts is that if you combine it with a battop, you more or less get a joystick that is the same length/height as a western joystick. This is good for people like me who prefers western parts, having grown up with American arcades.
I just got a Hori Fighting edge. I absolutely love it but want to swap the buttons and stick to something more responsive/stiff. Also a Bat top and maybe extender because I have big hands. Modding just seems fun too! Thanks for the video and if anyone has any tips or advise I'd love to hear it.
I have no idea nor have a plan in getting a stick, I finished watching the video lolz! Maybe I would say the lazy way is to get an extender than to dismantle the stick. That’s my way of a lazy person xD
Great video. It would have been even better if you went into detail about what the spring and actuator do. I can't seem to find an in depth video about em.
@@JoystickNY Ok I see. Well as someone who watches alot of your videos when it comes to arcade sticks, I look forward to a great video. Also take your time and I hope all is well.
The plastic shaft cover on my Hori RAP N has a wider bottom and a narrow top. The shaft cover demonstrated in the video seems equal sized top and bottom.
I'd expect a shorter shaft would take less motion (I.e. from your hand/forearm) to execute a move resulting in faster execution. Like picture rotating a pencil from the middle or from the top, you'll find the arc it travels gets progressively larger as the distance from the base grows. Am I wrong? I fail to see how so, perhaps the difference is negligible?
Ive been using a short shaft paired with a 2lb spring (stock is 0.9lb) and it is noticeable how much less you have to move the stick, it especially makes DP motion and guilty gear 632146 supers easier to do
Good point, i think once you get used to it, you kinda not notice it; scientifically i think your are right, Its kinda like buttons with diff activation distance, they exisit; but its very hard to tell

hello, I am building an arcade and I plan on using sanwa parts. I am building the control board from wood and I would like to know the thickness I would use for it if I wanted to mount the stick to the panel directly.
If you watch Segaholic's channel, he's an arcade OG who was custom building some of the first E sports sticks for Virtua Fighter players in the early 2000's, in his video he shows that some places or people use a dust washer up top as normal, but also one directly under the same surface so there is even more protection, that would obviously have to be a smaller circled one for shaft width only, not for a cover. So shaft cover,, shaft cover washer up top, and a shaft only dust cover directly underneath the playing surface and maybe 4 lb spring is maybe good to stand up to the daily wear and tear of the public in an arcade as the spring also softens over time ruclips.net/video/IMkLzSXigEU/видео.html 14:20 for the two dust covers shown, I think it may even be put upside down perhaps, I wonder if this affects the joystick height as well depending on the mounting plate
Hey my friend, I am new to Arcade sticks and I recently just bought a "Subsonic" Arcade Stick, but I need some help with the shaft because it continually rotates. I was able to tighten the ball top but the shaft continues to rotate. Am I doing something wrong? If so please advice me if you can.
I always wondered if some person out there ever modded a gear shift from a truck to be an arcade stick. I could see buttons on table to slap and gear shift stick mounted to a chair.
Should the lever rotate freely? I have the mayflash f500 elite and sometimes when performing combos, my hands slips and then the lever rotate and goes to different direction. I really don't like this and perfer if the lever/shaft would move but not rotate
today I got a cheap arcade stick kit from AliExpress....i do hadokin good and hurricane kick very good...but I couldn't do suruokin at all I trying so much but not work .... Is it because the stick is not good ?
I've built a multicade and am using 2 Sanwa JLF's, the shaft is very short, and only extenders I can find are 15 mm, and that makes it about 5 mm too tall, ideally I would like 5mm extenders , so I could add one, and if one needed two. Before someone suggests using a spacer under the stick, the guy who made the deck just ran wood screws, no insets......so that would be problematic....
I do have question since I'm pretty new to modding arcade stick. But ever since I changed the spring to a 2Ib the stick now make this squeaking nosie when I move it to certain direction. Any idea on what it could be😭?
My bottom dust washer is loose after I changed the actuator and spring.. and it does the same with stock parts.. maybe it's the grease that wore off.. dunno but I removed it and left the arcade stick without it. I see no difference.
Hi great vid, but I have a question I do not see mentioned, you have what looks like very smooth satin finished ball tops with no mold marks, can you please tell me who makes those, what brand are the ball tops in this video. I would like to get some of these and have yet to find any like the ones in your video. The ones in your video appear to be much better quality then most I have found.
After watching this video and the previous one on balltop vs bat top, if I install a bat top (or the new bullet lever from Seimitsu) will they rotate on their self too like the ball top? Ii is something I really dont like on sticks
Let say u push left, and left dont work, and other 3 directions are working, it mostly means that microswitch is bad, i would recommend just replacing the whole pcb with the switches, save you alot of time, the harder route is to solder off 1 switch and solder back 1 switch, and you will need to buy soldering equipments, it can cost more than replacing the whole unit if you are only doing it once or twice.🙏❤️ great question
My Sanwa joystick on pandora box doesn't work properly when I block ....basically all back directions not responding. What should I do? Change whole joystick?
I'm probably going to be modifying my Hori Alpha lever with a longer shaft, bat top, and octogate, so this was really helpful! Do you have any recommendations on where to buy the actual parts?
10:50 That washer got me a little worried tbh. Last time I tried to take apart and put back together my Sanwa I realized that something was wrong. Basically whatever direction I was pressing it always felt as if something under under was getting on the way. I took it apart again, and I found out that that washer was sticking to the actuator, thus moving out of its base, and I was wondering if something like that was normal, due to the grease applied onto. (In the end I put things back together and it got back to normal, even though I kind of got traumatized that my input execution has worsened a bit 😅)
Hey bro I'm looking to invest in an arcade stick soon and really want to mod it to my liking. I'm running into an issue with buttons. I really want the 24mm gamerfinger buttons with the blue cherry mx microswitches in them. They are not listed on their site and when I try through focusattack they also say that gamerfinger has not been responding. What are my alternatives to this problem if any?
Love your videos, just a recommendation though, if possible in the camera don't use auto focus for the Parts and details of the joystick, it's hard to see with the focus changing constantly with the movement of your hands, still awesome video
Great advice, thank you 😊🙏❤️ i should film the video with a higher aperture stop, which makes more things focus, that way it wont change focus too drastically, i am learning everything 😉
I have those on my list, but pretty far down the road, i want to start from easy to advance, becuz if i make video on boards and customizing stuff, alot of people will be confused ❤️🙏 great suggestion 😊👍
I am not sure if they are stainless steel, but i know a lot are aluminum, i dont lube the shaft, only the pivot areas. I never seen a shaft rust yet, i think they last for a long time 🙏❤️
Great video! But I think it might worth mentioning that the shaft can be changed without removing the gate? Since sticks like the silent JLF might get damaged if the gate is removed
Great point👍 , that is valuable info, let me pin this comment up, that way everyone sees it 🕹
Why is that? Can you timestamp the video for your point? Idk about arcade stick stuff but I want to learn more. Thanks :)

I would like to get some of these and have yet to find any like the ones in your video. The ones in your video appear to be much better quality then most I have found.
Message me on fb ig or twitter, that way i can remember to find it for u, its been a while. Cuz this comment will get lost in sea
After watching this video and the previous one on balltop vs bat top, if I install a bat top (or the new bullet lever from Seimitsu) will they rotate on their self too like the ball top? Ii is something I really dont like on sticks
I have a good question for you. What makes a arcade stick stop moving in most directions? Would that mean it needs new microswitches on the shaft?
Let say u push left, and left dont work, and other 3 directions are working, it mostly means that microswitch is bad, i would recommend just replacing the whole pcb with the switches, save you alot of time, the harder route is to solder off 1 switch and solder back 1 switch, and you will need to buy soldering equipments, it can cost more than replacing the whole unit if you are only doing it once or twice.🙏❤️ great question
@@JoystickNY Thanks for the answer. I definitely figured it would be the pcb which is relatively cheap to replace.
Great video
Thank you so much 🙏❤️
My Sanwa joystick on pandora box doesn't work properly when I block ....basically all back directions not responding. What should I do? Change whole joystick?
Yes, change the lever, probably the best option 👍🕹
Thank you for sharing ❤️🙏 you just reminded me to order some etsu grease 😊
@@JoystickNY Apparently I wasn't placing the PCB and the restrictor gate properly 😂
boring? that was fucking awesome
Appreciate you
That washer that pops out when you remove the shaft, When I move the stick it comes out of place. How do I fix it?
Maybe the c/e clip is the secure?
When you're pouring the stuff into the stick I'm like noo don't do it 😂 ocd
Its was very easy to clean 😊
Could you do a video comparing/swapping out different tension springs?
Hi friend, that video is on the list, part of this series 😊
@@JoystickNY ❤️❤️❤️
Hey bro I'm looking to invest in an arcade stick soon and really want to mod it to my liking. I'm running into an issue with buttons. I really want the 24mm gamerfinger buttons with the blue cherry mx microswitches in them. They are not listed on their site and when I try through focusattack they also say that gamerfinger has not been responding. What are my alternatives to this problem if any?
I would say wait, or try sanwa hayabusa or seimitsu for now, you can also try other sites like arcade shock and ebay to see if any luck.
@@JoystickNY thanks I'll check them out. Appreciate the help🤙🏾
Good videos thanks. Please do some videos. The Brooke fighting boards. Like how can I connect my PS5 to custom arcade controls.
I have those on my list, but pretty far down the road, i want to start from easy to advance, becuz if i make video on boards and customizing stuff, alot of people will be confused ❤️🙏 great suggestion 😊👍
Thank you!
Thank you for watching 🙏❤️
Wearing a ring can scrach the shaft too.
Are all shafts made with stainless steel?
Do you lube the shaft to prevent rust?
I am not sure if they are stainless steel, but i know a lot are aluminum, i dont lube the shaft, only the pivot areas. I never seen a shaft rust yet, i think they last for a long time 🙏❤️
would you be able to put a standard sanwa shaft into an ls-32 lever? ik the ls-32 has a slightly thicker lever and im jw if you could
I am not sure, i have a feeling it wont work cuz the ls32 shaft is abit thicker from the top of my head
You should do a video on actuators they're important too
Thank you, that video is on the later episodes ❤️🙏
