@@JoystickNY thanks for your video. Hey what brand or model was the 2 boxes that had a hinge when you opened them. I am new to gaming and want to try out these style boxes. This way I can change joysticks so that I can get a feel for what several brands feel like. I want to find out which one I like the most. Also are these wireless or wired fightsticks? Since this video is over a year old now. Do you also have any recommendations for a fightstick. I like that you can change ball too to batt top easily. This way you can use either and are not stuck with only one style. Thanks
I've always used the bat top on the arcades, I'm from mexico and this is a regular thing all around the country, I guess this happened because we're pretty much next to the US
Growing up in the US I always saw a combination of ball and bat tops. I never thought much about it. I just assumed it was purely aesthetic. I specifically remember seeing ball tops on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles machine. They used different colored parts for the 4 players since each player was a different turtle. The use of yellow instead of orange for Michelangelo REALLY stood out to me so I remember that machine well. I think I also mostly saw bat tops on older games like Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Newer games in the 90s were mostly using bat tops, even in US arcades.
Desmond Griffin i will be going deeper in and going in to Korean parts later on, but maybe take me a while because they are in the bottom of the list ❤️🙏 and thank you for watching
Bat tops also offer better leverage from their height, so you can use stronger springs for faster return to neutral. I get that everyone uses what fits them best, but when you ask on the internet what are the real advantages and disadvantages of each type of controller they hit you with the "Use what suits you best", which makes it really hard to get a feel for what you should be looking for when choosing your perfect controller.
I just bought a DIY arcade set so I can make my first arcade controller ever, and to get this video be my first step was great. Im so eager to build it but I want to get as much knowledge as I can on the way and I loved how the time you take to explain everything is just perfect

Here in Brazil only had bat tops in the arcades in the 90s and 00s. Very popular until to this day among players of KoF and SF series. And, Like you, I got used to it. But I play more now with ball top. For air dasher (what I've been playing the most lately) seems more appropriate. Nice channel. Great videos.

I've migrated to Battops on all of my sticks for playing STG (shmups). For me, the response is way more comfortable than balltop, and I feel there's also less chance of slipping or mis-input. Paired with Octagate, it's the perfect STG lever setup. I may shorten them down, though. On to episode 2~!
Hi! First of all I love your videos, and since I'm building a custom arcade stick I had many questions about using either a ball top or a bat top, since I'm Mexican and all our arcades used to have bat tops back in the day, this video reaally helped me to answer all my questions, thank you so much
I recently came across a stick top that's a combo of battop and balltop, being like a battop with a fatter, rounder top. I play King in Tekken and have to do both quick taps and half circles a lot and it's the perfect combo for that. Pretty wild how many types of stick toppers there are out there now!
Thank you for the detailed explanation of the differences between bat top and ball top; I know why my execution in SF and GG is so messy compared to Tekken. I was using a bat top! Time to try the ball top.
Been out of any competitive play since cvs2.. broke out the old MASstick and it's practically beyond repair.. glad I found these.. guess I'm going for a quanba
Love your channel bro. I used to play a lot of tekken back in the mid to late 90s on the arcades and I’m a bat top guy. I recently bought a stick for the first time. I just can’t get used to the ball top playing tekken and it make sense now why! 😂 can’t wait for the restrictor gate episode as I’m building up ideas based on your vids to mod my stick to my own preference. haha i swapped my ball top after a while when i realized i can easily twist it out. bought myself a resin nice one. no regrets - loving all these parts actually have standards in them.
1:50 Its crazy how many people don't know this and waste money and sacrifice comfort playing on a korean lever wishing they could use a battop on a japanese lever.
I just got my Sanwa bat top ordered from the States. Stoked about it. My Razer Dragonball FighterZ Panthera arcade stick even has an allocated hole for it to fit into when you open up the internals. I think I'm gonna try them both until I find my preferred ones for specific games.
A lot of people in the usa prefer bat tops. But i actually dont think thats what they are having a preference for. I think that they like the happ/lorenzo mechanism under it. It would feel a bit weird to put a ball top on a happ, but it would still feel more "normal" to most americans who grew up in arcades in the 90s. You cant just slap a bat top on a sanwa and expect it to feel the same. It will feel like hot garbage. But a ball top on a happ would be fine (-ish). Ive still got a few nos happ joysticks out in the garage. I really wish i could jam one into the 8bitdo fight stick.
All these tops are so cheap you might as well try them all yourself. I highly recommend the Seimitsu Bullet Top as long as it’s not too heavy for your lever spring. I started using it for shmups and now I’ve gotten back into fighting games I still prefer it to a ball top.
Hey bro awesome video. Man I did not know that changing the ball top to a bat top would make a difference in how you can play. I thought it was just for looks.I will definitely have to try this.

Hi @JoyStickNY !! Wonderful video! I ordered a Samducksa crown battop and a Kori one also from Jammastar company for my future Hori Alpha Tekken 8 edition 😍. Not bad DualShock in my old Tekken 7 game but lack of timing i think. I will also keep the arcade stick with squared gate.
Wow bro!! I love your vids so much! They are Amazing ( like always!! hahaha) Keep going! And thank you for showing the inputs on screen when you play it's very helpful!
I have a joystick from the late 80s made in Greece that is a mixture of bat and ball and looks more like a droplet which I really love and cant find anywhere
@@JoystickNY Square (4-Way) restrictor gates are for Pac-Man, shoot'em ups and platformers and octagonal (8-Way) restrictor gates are for fighting games and beat'em ups. And as for the circular restrictor gates, that is unknown.
I feel like bat tops in American arcades are not really a thing anymore. It really depends on the cabinet you're playing on. growing up, you were more likely to see suzo happ parts, but that's not the case anymore because there's taito cabinets all over the place. A lot of private owners have candy cabs, or astro-city cabinets, which are japanese cabinets
Can confirm that those SF4 cabs used Sanwa parts. Soooooo many hours spent at that arcade, though I was still one of those guys playing SF vs Marvel Superheroes in the back corner. :D
You just made me think. I was pretty much set on ball top for my arcade cabinet because that's most of what I've seen in France and Japan. But I'm starting to wonder if bat top wouldn't be better for more general gameplay.
Well this explains why my movement felt weird when I was playing Tekken yesterday. I will have to try it out in Street Fighter to really feel the difference with a ball top. I was ready to blame the 8bitdo as a whole lol
I just modded my Hori RAP V Hayabusa (nintendo switch version) with a Sanwa Battop and a new 2lb spring, and it's SOO much more comfortable to play with, even in games like Street Fighter i'm much better now. I think it's because i have rather long fingers, so my hand curls very naturally to the side of a battop, compared to a balltop.
@@JoystickNY Thanks for the response! I was curious: Would you know of any balltop that has the same matte-like texture of Sanwa/American battops? Or, alternatively, have you ever tried an aluminum balltop? Whenever i try to play with a plastic glossy balltop, my sweaty hand slips on the ball a lot and i tend to drop inputs as a result.
Jace Beleren i havent seen any matte finish ball top, and have not used a aluminum ball top, but i do seen silicone neogeo ball top covers on amazon, if you want to check them out. I usually sweat too, but more on my bottom palm.
The Korean joysticks shown here are the Crown CWL-309MJ (clear battop) and the IST Knee Lever (red mounting plate, the $70 one), in case people didn't know...
Oddly enough, I was just thinking about modding my stick! One thing I'm caught on is number 3's subject...that being the spring. Do you have another video on your channel that'd show that process? I wanna keep from accidently breaking a piece in the case of me doing something incorrectly...
Loving this channel. I got two Namco ps1 arcade sticks recently, the yellow stick and button ones, I think I will try to put a bat top on one of them, I play KOF and Tekken and will see how bat top is as never used one. In the UK the arcades of the 90's I grew up in, I was about 9 years old in 1997 there and machines were always ball top as far as I'm aware lots of machines were Japanese in North London and in Central London, places like Picadilly Circus's Trocadero (Sega World London) and Oriental City/ Yaohan Plaza's SegaDome in Colindale. I could be wrong I was not that old, but I wonder how arcade machines were and are in Europe, ball or bat top I wonder 🕹. Thanks for your awesome channel
This helps a tiny bit, but the problem is the housings are too shallow, and the mount is still floppy. Refer original Street Fighter series cabinet joysticks.
I prefer the ball top, and usually hold it like an automotive stick shift. It makes it easier on the wrists since you end up moving the whole arm, not to mention the ball looks nicer (I grew up in the Pac Man era).
If you're ever building or want the classic style US style arcade sticks you want to buy iL parts, from Europe, and not Happ. Happ used to be the chief seller in US arcade parts. iL was the supplier for most of the sticks we're familiar with from the 90s. Happ changed suppliers to a Chinese factory at some point and the new parts are not the same. I have about six different arcade controllers and three of them have iL parts in them for retro games. That said the aftermarket for Japanese parts like the JLF is pretty big you can get very similar results with one and you've got more options with restrictor gates which are not really an option on an iL stick. It's amazing how big the market for consumer arcade parts has blown up. When I first bought an arcade cabinet in 2000 you pretty much had to goto Happ or Bob Roberts for parts. Happ was really caught off guard by the wave of millennials growing up and wanting to buy arcade parts for all sorts of projects.
can you plz review the most popular korean lever: Crown MJ309-st25. And make tutorial on how to install it. Love your video's and it would be cool if could see some korean levers in action too.
Anime Content TV thank you ❤️ Koreans lever are on my list, they are a little bit down the list tho, maybe i can make a early one , let me see if i can change somethings around 🙏
What is the proper size for a bat top? I ordered a set from Amazon, and they seemed really small, not like I remembered in the US arcade size. The Amazon ones said 51mm tall x 30mm wide.
hi!!! before all let me thank you for sharing all you knowledge it had helped me to chose better bottoms joysticks and how to change them to personalize my myflash 5000 (that i bought for your suggestion) ive notice that you mention NYC in a few of your videos, do you know any store where i can go to buy all this accessories? thanks so much to you and your team, keep goin with excellent work
The difference between ball and bat top has been blurred by the fact we now put contollers on our desks and no one plays on arcade cabinets any more. In the arcade days we reached DOWN to the controls and this affected the way we gripped the stick. I think this is why I prefer ball top as it allows you to grip under the ball when standing over it.

@@JoystickNY Square (4-Way) restrictor gates are for Pac-Man, shoot'em ups and platformers and octagonal (8-Way) restrictor gates are for fighting games and beat'em ups. And as for the circular restrictor gates, that is unknown.
Another fantastic video !
Thank you for this great explanation. It helped me decide: I got both types:)
Thank you for watching 🙏❤️
I just changed from ball top to bat top and it feels so much more comfortable in tekken 7👌
Yup, bat top is better for tekken, soul calibur and dead or alive series
Battops are also great for other types of games like Metroidvanias, platformers and side scrolling beat em ups.
Great for metal slug n shootemups too ❤️
Awesome series! And you got a knee lever! Been planning to get one
Darwin Alcazar its good, i like it, kinda expensive for a lever lol 🤣
@@JoystickNY yeah man! i was thinkinv on getting that but I just couldnt justify the price 😅 so I settled for the entry level klever
i just like very much to watch your channel, lots of very interesting and useful new things 💪😎😊🎮
DevaSheep thank you so much ❤️🙏 appreciate the love and support
Amazing video!
Damian Badowski thank you ❤️🙏
Videos with stories are the best 😂
Thank you, i will keep that in mind
Omg! Your presentation is so good.
Thank you so much ❤️🙏😊
I feel like bat tops in American arcades are not really a thing anymore.
Me too, i used to live in the arcades lol 🤣
Streetfighter vs xmen here lol
Yea man i use to go to chiina town and brooklyn for mvc2 tournies
i miss those times 😊
You just made me think. I was pretty much set on ball top for my arcade cabinet because that's most of what I've seen in France and Japan. But I'm starting to wonder if bat top wouldn't be better for more general gameplay.
I think they both are great, depending on your hand comfort and the game u play, i use ball top for street fighter, and bat top for tekken 🙏❤️
I really enjoy your videos, keep it up!
Thank you so much for the support ❤️🙏
Nice editing bro!
Uriel thank you brother , 🙏i try and still learning ❤️
appreciate the video man
Thank you for the support 🙏❤️
Very pleasant and educational video to watch :) thanks
Thank you for watching 🙏❤️
Most JP style levers come with a shaft cover that spins independently, so you can't loosen the balltop by using pliers on those.
Sir Charles you’re right, i mean for people like me who doesnt use a shaft cover 😂
Well this explains why my movement felt weird when I was playing Tekken yesterday. I will have to try it out in Street Fighter to really feel the difference with a ball top. I was ready to blame the 8bitdo as a whole lol
Yea, always mess with it and try diff parts ❤️
Keep it up bro!
@edison baylon thank you so much
I just modded my Hori RAP V Hayabusa (nintendo switch version) with a Sanwa Battop and a new 2lb spring, and it's SOO much more comfortable to play with, even in games like Street Fighter i'm much better now. I think it's because i have rather long fingers, so my hand curls very naturally to the side of a battop, compared to a balltop.
Jace Beleren i am happy you found a good combination for your style 🕹👍😊
@@JoystickNY Thanks a lot! I'll check these neogeo silicon balltops out.
The Korean joysticks shown here are the Crown CWL-309MJ (clear battop) and the IST Knee Lever (red mounting plate, the $70 one), in case people didn't know...
Thank you for the info 🙏❤️
Ive only ever used sanwa parts and today i got my first bat top just wanted to see how it feels with tekken
I love your videos
Thank you for sharing 🙏❤️ i love kof and will be getting 15
This helps a tiny bit, but the problem is the housings are too shallow, and the mount is still floppy. Refer original Street Fighter series cabinet joysticks.
cool stuff man, educational
thank you for the support 🙏❤️
I prefer the ball top, and usually hold it like an automotive stick shift. It makes it easier on the wrists since you end up moving the whole arm, not to mention the ball looks nicer (I grew up in the Pac Man era).
I like the ball top more too 😊👍
youre the friggin MAN!
Thank you 🙏❤️
Excellent video.
Thank you ❤️
wouldn't be a fight stick video without seeing some EWGFs.
Thank you for watching 🙏❤️
DORYA!
❤️ thank you for watching
Awesome Dragon Ball translucent bat top! Do you have a link where I can buy one?
The arcades we're everywhere in NY in grew up in the Bronx and I played everyday with my boys after school
Yup same here
can you plz review the most popular korean lever: Crown MJ309-st25. And make tutorial on how to install it. Love your video's and it would be cool if could see some korean levers in action too.
Anime Content TV thank you ❤️ Koreans lever are on my list, they are a little bit down the list tho, maybe i can make a early one , let me see if i can change somethings around 🙏
3:52 Yes, the SF IV cabinet (Taito Vewlic C) Comes with the Sanwa JLF and OBSF-30 parts.
👍🕹❤️
Amazing bro thank you so much
Thank you for the support 🙏❤️
What is the proper size for a bat top? I ordered a set from Amazon, and they seemed really small, not like I remembered in the US arcade size. The Amazon ones said 51mm tall x 30mm wide.
You can get a sanwa branded one; it will fit most arcade parts, or refer to the sanwa bat top dimensions
hi!!! before all let me thank you for sharing all you knowledge it had helped me to chose better bottoms joysticks and how to change them to personalize my myflash 5000 (that i bought for your suggestion) ive notice that you mention NYC in a few of your videos, do you know any store where i can go to buy all this accessories?
thanks so much to you and your team, keep goin with excellent work
I think there is a shop near cooper square that sellls arcade parts
im using a japanese stick (seimitsu) with a korean bat top (crown) and im lovin' it.
Nice combination 🕹👍
Yup 👍🕹
The difference between ball and bat top has been blurred by the fact we now put contollers on our desks and no one plays on arcade cabinets any more. In the arcade days we reached DOWN to the controls and this affected the way we gripped the stick. I think this is why I prefer ball top as it allows you to grip under the ball when standing over it.
Well said 👍♥️
However I grew up playing in European arcade cabinets with battops. So I hate balls 😂
girls like battop , guys like balltop :P
Lol 🤣 thank you for dropping by
