I know anecdotal evidence is suspect, but I have frequently gotten bad colds during the WSOP (lack of sleep, unsanitary cards & chips, exposure to foreign disease strains?) During the time when I wore a mask, I got neither Covid nor a cold. I'm convinced mask wearing is a useful preventative measure, unfortunately they're uncomfortable. I'd rather increase my risk than subject myself to 14 hours of discomfort, although I wish everyone else would wear them to protect me. PS When in hotel room, I always use all available locks on doors.
God I can't stand Bonomo he's the fakest creep in poker. I expect something horrible to come out about him in the future. A lot worse than him getting caught cheating as he previously was.

In the US, masking wasn't normal pre-COVID. In Asia, like China and Japan, masking is more common and traces back to things like SARS.
Almost like big events like a pandemic causes cultural changes or something.

Everything was going fine on my heavy traffic drive home listening to this until the Ike impression. I completely lost my shit and an off duty cop a lane over thought I was having a seizure and immediately called for paramedics and told me “you’re gonna be alright, kid.” I feel bad for the 1+ hour of more traffic that has just been added to the commuters behind me but it’s all in the name of bullying so I’m all forit.

His statement basically implies that it's half and half, the ones who win are smarter and those people vote left. Thus smarter people vote left.

The rule appears to be the Floor or promoters can ID the person or not.. so they can determine if a player was swapped with someone else. If they were ID'd earlier, and it's the same person, there's no need to recheck. However, if someone accuses it's a different player, or the Floor or promoter wants to verify the player, they have to capitulate. The rules does not sound like a person has to show their face while playing the game.

I think a player should be allowed to cover themselves during a hand - or even more generally, at the table - but if they ever get up to leave they need to come back with their full faces visible so everyone knows they are who they say they are. I think it's weird to completely cover yourself up while playing, but I don't really care personally if people do it.
I also don't care about masks. I think they don't provide much in the way of an advantage and with the level of hygiene at the average poker table, I think it might just be the smart idea.
That's a great point about leaving/coming back. It could easily be 2 people working in "shifts" while the other one takes a rest.

Doug I gotta disagree with one of your points about people wearing masks these days. Wearing masks in the US is far more socially acceptable and normal than it was pre-Covid. This is one of the reasons that you probably see masks even though Covid numbers have dropped.

It has been very common in Asian cultures for people to wear masks and that went back way before Covid.
So it was not like people didn't wear masks prior to Covid, it was mostly only people that cared enough about others that did.
Given that the evidence of efficacy is proven nul, those who wear masks in public are rightly perceived as selfish narcissists who would rather expose others to sickness than choose to stay home

I still wear a mask in the casino. I used to get a cold/flu a few times a year pre Covid and since I started masking in 2020 I've been sick like one time. I don't care if the illness will kill me - being sick is annoying and wearing a mask quite literally costs me nothing. Poker players are gross - a few people at any given table are very clearly ill or smell like ass and the masks help slightly with both. If a poker player needs like a lip twitch or smile or other physical tell to beat me in poker, he should get better at poker. I also never understood how hiding physical tells with a mask/sunglasses/hoodie is a problem to anyone, anyway. Do I really deserve to win less if I study the same, play my cards just as well, read opponent timing and bet sizing and such just as well, range my opponents just as well, identify the same bluff spots, etc... but every once in a while I have an uncontrollable lip twitch when I drill the nuts? Really?

The rule about hiding your face seems to be there to prevent having someone switch places or for security reasons, I don't really think it is a problem as long as you can be identified when asked and are not wearing something distracting. There is of course the issue that any tournament wants to generate extra revenue by streaming the event and you can't see anyone's faces that will be less popular but then update the rules to make it clear you cannot wear it unless for medical reasons, be it masks, hoodies or sunglasses.
C'mon, dude. What separates live poker from online is being able to look at your opponent to gain information. If you take way that component you'd might as well just get rid of live poker. Imagine if everyone did this. What's the point? You can't let a few people get away with this just because it's only a few people.

RE masks - NOT wearing a mask when it is required makes a political statement. Wearing a mask where it is not required is more likely to be a health-related decision without political motivation. But wearing a mask to a poker game might mean you are Mike Postle.
I can’t agree with your point made at 8:50, that people in bucket 2 wearing a mask are making political statements necessarily. Just because “masks have very little value” doesn’t mean they have no value. Being extra extra safe might be overkill but maybe some people could value this marginal increase in safety over comfort. I bet lots of people wearing masks were wearing them to gain an advantage, which is obviously not okay, but there definitely might be some who are actually wearing them for safety reasons.

Haxton is quite obviously making a political statement with his, so that bucket definitely exists. Of the few people I know who won't give up a mask, they all fall in that same bucket. I would venture to say the political/virtue signaling bucket is larger than the health concerns one.
Non surgical quality masks, outside of a surgical setting are virtually useless. They help if you are actually sick and you want to protect others. How do you protect yourself from all the stuff you think the mask is helping with that ends up on the chips and cards? Thise things are guaranteed to touch hundreds of people.
@@area541glass totally agree that the bucket exists, and it definitely could be true that there’s more people in the politics bucket than the health bucket, but I’m not sure that matters. If the health bucket has 5% of players, that might still be enough to not change any rules
I mean, hospitals stopped enforcing masks because studies showed they did absolutely nothing. Most people who wear masks aren't wearing the type of mask that actually protects against anything. I didn't mind wearing a mask when studies were limited and we were desperate to curb covid but when we have statistics out there to prove something is useless why would you consider to do it? I find it odd someone as smart as Ike would even engage in such logic.

I mean, you should be able to wear a mask in a poker room, especially nowadays. I'm someone who is on 2 different immune suppressant meds, so if I'm inside somewhere with a lot of people, of course I'm gonna wear a mask. My health is more important than weirdos whining about me wearing a mask lol.

@@rubbertoad3681 eh, i'm not like in terrible danger if i just catch a cold or something, they just tend to last longer and give me worse symptoms than most other people. because i'm pretty good about masking and washing my hands and being very hygenic in general i've only caught something like twice the last 3 years and both times it was from my roommates lol.

It's very likely and highly probable that the fully covered/masked player informed Tournament Officials before the tournament began, who then informed all other Tournament Officials who he is and what he will wearing. According to tournament rules, only Tournament officials need to know who he is, not tournament players.
