The Hottest Gambling Streak Of All Time

- Archie Karas is a Las Vegas legend. In the early 1990s he went on the most improbable run of all time, amassing millions of dollars at billiards, high stakes poker, baccaract and craps. At one point he had amassed over $40,000,000. His friends pleaded with him to put a little bit of the money away for safe keeping, but nothing could stop his inevitable downfall. This video essay (mini documentary?) covers the wild ups and downs against poker legends such as Doyle Brunson, Chip Reese, Puggy Pearson, and other World Series of Poker legends.

Ouch Doug idk if you should be giving out legal advice considering recent developments 😅
U forgot to name Mikki when listing winners in Las Vegas. Or at least I think he’s a winner.
Archie the poker GOAT
Archie lives in California. He calls me from time to time. If you want to chat with him Doug lmk.
@@beanz7315 Doug, you should stake him for a new run...same exact way. Line up the pros for slaughter!
He had $50 won $40.000.000 then back to $0
Gambler:
"I only lost 50 bucks"
He took a loan of $10.000 which he paid back so he probably had his $50 left
He lost nothing ;)

From 0$ to 40M$ to 0$, a true degen. Respect.
So he finished Even? #Respect!!
Mafia money laundering... He was accused and arrested for marking cards on blackjack.
He was seen playing 1 2 limit and asked how can he stomach such low limits after the highest stakes ever...he answered like a true degenerate " at least I got action" 😂
TBF he started with $50
Google Navinder Saraoh. $0 to $50M to $0. Highly recommend Flash Crash by Liam Vaughan for a deep dive into the story. A perfect book for the beach during the summer.
Nav was not quite a degen, just an autistic guy literally trading from his mom's basement, enraged that he could see spoofing in the markets every day, alerted the authorities, but they ignored/did nothing. So he spoofed the spoofers. He's somewhat linked to may 2010 Flash Crash (hence the title of the book) but he cut his bot 2 minutes before it started, which, in the world of *high frequency* trading in the *sub 1ms* realm is like the dinosaur era, somehow got blamed for the whole thing. Did a year in prison while helping/teaching the SEC about spoofing. He was so helpful the judge sent him back to his mom's basement for a year, which, for the autistic guy that he is was definitely the best possible outcome. He got defrauded of most of the money. He was indeed guilty of spoofing himself (but frankly it stills happens every day it's laughable) and one count of wire fraud (tax evasion). The flash crash blame is ridiculous.
Content like this is probably more difficult to make than hand analysis, since there's always fresh content, but I'd love for things like this to be mixed in a little more, when possible. Really fun and well done video
I agree this is good content. But Karas existed before hand reviews were a thing.
Hand analysis videos are the worst .. so called “experts” monday morning quarterbacking hands they see everyone’s cards …LMAO
It's when Doug does more stuff like this that we have respect for him. He's not having any ego, just straight up presentation.
@@Johnny2FeathersYeah poker hand analysis are kinda shitty because it's different when you are over there not seeing the cards.
“And now I’d like to announce the newest upswing poker coach, Archie Karas”
It sounds like a tragedy to us, but for a guy like him, the 40 M didn't mean anything. He was trying to win every single chip existing in the world
I think you told this story very well and look forward to more content like this!

Holy moley. Great video. I really enjoyed it !! Thanks for thje effort homie
I know Archie. He’s a solid pool player, JRB plays better pool.
Archie was broke in 92, he was playing $100 pool at Cuetopia. He ended up in action with Bobby Baldwin and won $1.5M playing 9 ball at the Rum Runner. I was there.
Doug’s pretty close on the numbers.
Epic story, last time I spoke to him was about 7-8 months ago. He’s not well. 🙏🏼
So is Baldwin mr X?
Looks like it nice catch
@@lukespalding1964 thanks, wondered who that was for years.
Suuuure you were...
I'm just kiddin 😂 awesome anecdote btw
@@jonbarron8049 yes that was the pool game that started the big heater. Lou Banyon(sped incorrectly) set the game up. Was played at Rum Runner over 3 days. The Rum Runner is still there at Trop and Spencer. A bar with 4 tables, still going strong.
Archie was pretty much on air, however he did have a reputation and that what Bobby bet into. Bobby can’t play pool near as good as Archie, he was drawing dead in that game. But had a HUGE ego and Lou knew that. Which is why he had Archie fire a toothpick at a lumber yard. The rest is history.
At that time I played about like Archie, we talked about playing cheap, but never matched up.
Archie spun up more at the expense of Jack Binion (Horseshoe) who staked Chip, Stu and others at the poker table. The craps table had 100-1 pass line odds. Archie hit the Shoe real good. Flatting the pass line for $1000 and full $100,000 odds behind the line. Between the poker players(some were rumored to be dumping) and the dice table. Jack was the big loser in the “score” at the send of the day. Of course it didn’t last long as Archie said. He blew it back fast.
I see Archie when I’m in town at Griff’s these days. A few times over the last couple years. JRB plays at Griff’s now. Nice pool room. (Little more to the story).
Lou the guy who made the pool game-the $1.5M seed $ to spin up the score is still alive. He’s a piece of work. A real life “Worm” from Rounders who’s around 80 these days. Still pulling moves and God knows what else. Banyon isn’t his legal last name-it’s his street last name. I’ve known him since 90-91 when I moved to town. Vegas was a very small town then and when something happened everyone knew everyone and word traveled fast. Was a fluke I was there for this one.
There was another big score(craps) by another guy, RA are his initials which was about the size of Archie’s that happened in 04-06. I’m sure there are others. Those are the 2 I was there for. Vegas was a hell of a run for me as well. Good times.
Great video Doug. I absolutely love hearing about the old timers. Any chance you can do a video on Chip Reece and Danny Robinson, the Gold Dust Twins. Mike Sexton wrote some great columns on these two. Absolutely fascinating.
Mike Sexton's "Life a Gamble" book is filled with great stories with old timers and new. Worth a read
Loved the video. Great gambling history👍🏼

This was well done. Factually accurate, based on Archie’s own interviews.

Great Video!
Good job. I have interviewed Karas in 2011 in Vegas and also interviewed an ex blackjack counter who has some great insights on this story, but he wouldn't share them publicly.
Then why mention it at all?
If he tried marking cards in the 2010s, he definitely tried during the 90s
Wouldn't be surprised if there was something going on with baccarat or craps too. It's definitely possible he was so high on his success that, essentially not having poker or pool options he did whatever he could to gamble, but theoretically with craps you could get to +value if you had good enough dice control. Baccarat I'm not sure on; he could have marked cards at that point, or could have done something like Ivey did (which I think was... didn't he notice patterns or something on the cards?).
@@jaxsonbateman - No, Ivey and his Mandarin-speaking sidekick did what is called edge-sorting but they had to have co-operation from the dealer in order to pull it off, which is why one of his (Ivey's) 'demands' was that his dealer speak Mandarin. The brand of cards he also 'demanded', as a condition of his play, were cut at the factory so that the design was slightly closer to the edge of the card on one side than the other, so they were able, again, with the aid of the dealer, to approximate the value of the next card to come out of the shoe - which would determine which side they would bet on. It is an insurmountable advantage and the casino had no chance. Casinos, actually. But they were foolish and careless and that is why they were discovered and remain unpaid. If I had been Ivey's accomplice, we would STILL be milking those bastards on a regular basis and they would have no idea how we were doing it.
But why would he Lose it all if he marked Cards? if they made it impossible for him to cheat, would he not just quit playing?
@@danieldaak3082 because gambling addicts gonna gamble
I believe Archie's crazy run was the result of him finding some kind of edge or cheat within the game. Perhaps he was beating all those casino houses and top poker players by marking cards or using a marked deck. We've never seen a run like that in the gambling world aside from Phil Ivey's bacarat run which ironically he was edge sorting and was taking advantage of a flaw that he identifited with the casinos cards. My guess is Archie either identified some type of flaw or edge with the cards or he got the dealers or the casino managers to bring a marked deck onto the table. Maybe he was working with one of the casino dealers and maybe they were a very good "mechanic" / bottom dealer. Who knows, what we do know is Archie has a history with this sort of stuff and what we also know is that no one has ever had a legitimate run like he had. I think the fact that all the vegas casinos were so quick to blacklist him for life also shows that they probably believed he cheated or exploited some sort of flaw/exploit the first time around when he went on a heater. Id bet that when Karas lost that 40 million at other casinos my guess is the casino he won all the money at made changes to their cards or their dealers and whatever edge, exploit or cheat he was using wasnt usable at the other casinos where he lost all the money. Its not like Archie Karas was the Tom Dwan of his era and it wasnt like he was some poker God so I dont see how you explain him beating the likes of the best players in the world at the time such as Stu Ungar, Puggy Pearson, Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan and Chip Reese. These guys shouldve crushed him. And if Karas was good enough to beat all those guys then he would have gone on to win millions in poker and would've had a very successful poker career just as all those players did who played him. If you're good enough to beat all those guys at their peak then you're good enough to win millions in poker over the next 20-40 years, but Karas didn't. He had very little success in poker both in tournaments and in cash games. You don't beat all those guys just by getting "lucky" over and over. If he was good enough to do so then he would've had future success in poker. But he didnt, because he used edge sorting or some type of cheat/exploit during his run. Many of the players that he beat thought he was cheating somehow as well.
Yup. Statistics is still a thing and still true. Math is hard for some. There's no way EV is what think it should be.
@@cole-nq1ru The guy beat all the top players in the world for millions of dollars but then goes on to have no success in poker in tournaments or cash games? Doesn't really add up. If he was that good and was crushing all the worlds top players for millions of dollars then that level of skill would have translated into a successful career as a cash game player and tournament player. But it didn't. He has a long history of cheating and looking for any edge that he can get. So it seems pretty plausible that something was going on. I mean could you imagine Tom Dwan at his peaking crushing all the top players in the world online but then not going on to have any success in live cash games or tournaments? It would look pretty fishy and a lot of people would think that he was using botting software or 3rd party tools to compile information on his opponents. But the difference is Dwan went on to become a very successful cash game player in live games around the world and he has also had good success in tournaments the rare times that he has decided to play them. That wasn't the case with Karas. The guy was literally a one hit wonder. And in other recent cases where we've seen someone beat the casino over and over for millions of dollars it's turned out there has been cheating or edge sorting going on a lot of the time. Like we saw with Phil Ivey and Borgata when he exploited a flaw with their cards while playing Baccarat. It could've been something like that though I think Karas most likely got a marked deck onto the table.
@@Cameron_Caron I was agreeing with you if you read that wrong. There's no way his wins are legit, says math. He's way outside EV.
@@cole-nq1ru Oh I gotchu👍. It was really late and I was tired so I must have misread what you said 😆. My bad brother. Agree with you there. His win rate and EV are pretty unrealistic from a mathematical perspective.
He could just be the perfect combination of being an outlier in terms of luck and not giving a shit about losing the money. And poker was a completely different game back then, his disregard for money may have been enough to give him an edge. And maybe he was just on the right side of variance in his matches against those people, anyone can beat anyone short term. The biggest thing that makes me think he wasn't cheating is because he ended up losing everything after a few years, if he was cheating that wouldn't happen, and if his method of cheating was no longer viable he would have just stopped. Also at those stakes he would have been under extreme scrutiny from his opponents. I think he resorted to cheating later on in life because his luck finally ran out.
Again liked this vid a lot. Lil' change of pace compared to the usual ;) Interesting subject anyway.
Would love to see a video of the in-depth history of poker in general.
Read Doyle's biography.
You should do more stories like this!
"Back a rat" lmao
In the early 90's I was walking thru Binion's when I saw a guy at the crap table beating huge stacks of 5k chips. I later found out it was Archie.
A friend who's was a casino floor supervisor told me about a dealer who's gambling addiction was so bad he couldn't sleep if had money. He would take his daily tips and gamble until he lost it all.
From bringing people down to bringing people up. Good for you Doug.
What a legend! Great story doug!
You should do more run up stories 👍

Can we have a review of the airball/berkey final results?
$10000 to $40 mil but who's splitting hairs. Legendary.
Hollywood seriously need to do a biopic film or a mini-series on this guy but a RUclips mini-doc video with Doug Polk as a narrator will do.
There is only one narrator for that film or series and that's Doyle Brunson.
As much as I hate the cheating part of it, I can't help but love someone that realizes that you can't take it with you and isn't afraid to bet it all and not care what you think about it.
You can't take it with you... But you can at least keep some of it so you don't spend the next four decades as a depressed and broke loser lmao
Unless he was also cheating (or had some other way of making it +EV), I don't really like the mindset of "may as well just burn it" by playing baccarat and craps. I mean, degens be degens, but you can have a "can't take it with you" approach and still try to put that money on +value endeavours.
@@jaxsonbateman I know, you're thinking about it like I do, you're trying to make money and you value the money you're betting. I can't be like Archie but I've known someone like that personally. They aren't trying to burn it at craps or bac like you say either though its just gambling, its different, its kind of a rebellious thing, to beat someone at their own game and at the same time be able to risk it knowing you're probably going to lose and just not care cause fk it anyway
More of this format plz
When asked on Soft White Underbelly, why didn't he save or invest some of the money?
The answer was very simple but complex at the same time, Karas said:
"Because I'm a gambler not an investor."

Great video about a guy and his story that I had never heard before now. It definitely feels like it's essentially impossible for anyone to have a run like that in the pit games without cheating somehow, but I suppose there's always that 1 in 100 billion chance!
Yes, look at Patricia DeMauro. If you know the rules of Craps - imagine this - you could have placed money across the numbers at 8pm, and that money, along with any double ups you chose to do along the way, would be safe from loss until well after midnight.

Doug, are there any hand reviews for Archie Karas? Was he playing J4 alot? Lol.
When does the Archie Karas course drop?
Omg, you just reminded me about the god-awful bankroll challenges people put up on the Reddit sportsbetting subs. Starting with something like $50, betting on heavy favourites, and using 100% of their bankroll each time trying to get up to something like $1k - as though they won't suffer an upset at all while they chase the 20-odd wins in a row they need.
The bankroll management aspect of my brain dies whenever I see something like that.

when he went on the run at the craps tables, he was NOT allowed to touch the dice. One of the dealers threw the dice for him on every bet. This is because Archie was a known dice "slider".........
Theeeeere you goooo Doug. Do this. Stories like this. No need to be a grumpy old granny telling everyone in their faces whats what.
PS: Greek cant understand that that runn was - a sick streak, and when it ended, he became mortal just like next person. So, that drama "IF I HAD TO DO IT ALL AGAIN...." yea sure.
