- This is absolutely brutal. Imagine having the ace high flush, also generally known as the "nut flush", piling in hundreds of thousands of dollars, and still losing. That's exactly what happened to Andy Stacks on @HustlerCasinoLive. Could anything have been done to avoid this fate?

Yes, this was a massive cooler but looking at the river play, it was also one of the worst hands I have EVER played in my career, a gigantic gift to Mariano that I will make sure never happens again. Thx for the breakdown Doug.
At least you have the ability to look back and acknowledge your mistakes. Obviously will improve your game moving forward.
Your reaction (or more so not reacting) when losing that hand is pure class. You should be proud of that. I think 99.9% of us would lose in that hand regardlass of who our opponent was. It's just so unlikely to flop this kind of hand.

I did that early in my poker career but wouldn't do it today 😅

@@marvellkanmomixa1997 I did it also on Pokerstars when there is 3 of a kind on the board for example KKK 94 and I have A9 the other guy is all in he has a KQ because when 3 kings are on the board on Pokerstars it's 90% chance the other guy has it. That happens very very often on Pokerstars, three of a kind on the board,. I played millions of hands live and it happened maybe 2 or 3 times in my entire life, on Pokerstars I played 500 k hands and this situation happened more than 2500 times and I lost every time I called about 1500 times before I learned I have to fold because the other guy had quads every fuking time. When I saw it happens all the time I started writing down in my notebook every time three of a kind is on the board and since I started taking notes it happened 2500 times and I lost 1500 and folded 1000 times and of those 1k hands that I folded 384 times the other guy showed quads and there is 98% posibility that remaining 616 times my opponent didn't show a hand he had it. But the main point is that first 1500 times since I started taking notes I lost with full house against quads. I wrote mail to pokerstars and asked them why this happens and they said it's completely normal and that happens to everyone.

I feel like I have to chip in because of the title. There was a man who was close to the bubble of the main event WSOP, all he had to do was fold a few hands to guarantee his family $15,000. He was explaining to his wife (who knew nothing about poker) that he played a satellite and got a seat and he was the second biggest stack at his table near the bubble and all he had to do was fold for 30 minutes or so.
Anyway the big stack was raising small every hand. Our hero ended up playing a hand JJ just to see a flop. As you can probably guess the flop was wonderful, J77.
So the villain, the big stack, put him all in on the flop and our hero called. Villain had A3 off. Runner runner 7,7!!!
The worst part is he had to explain to his wife why he didn’t have $15,000 after he promised her he would just fold every hand
That's crazy but the chances of runner runner quads is 0.1%. 99.9% of the time when he does that he will not only guarantee 15k, but have a good shot at winning millions. I know this means nothing to a family who could really use the money, but when explained like that, hopefully the wife didn't fault him.
@joshualongo6660 To be fair, A-A run out adds about .3%. It's still an awful beat, but 250ish-1 is much different than 989-1.
After watching the video, which I enjoyed, I did feel the title was a bit of clickbait myself. The busted jacks-full example that you provided, especially coming runner, runner was much more a brutal "bad beat" even without the player's financial need aspect considered.
Years ago, I was playing a $10 - $20 limit game in a tribal casino in WA. For the second time in the same session, at the same table, against the same opponent, I made Quad 9s while holding a pocket pair. I bet again at the river but got raised, I re-raised and got raised again!
I doubt that I cost myself one extra $20 chip when I studied the board for a moment and said "I hope you have it!" as I tossed in another $20 raise. (A ten-high, straight flush was possible with the board's run-out.) My opponent was savvy and just called my last raise, asking in a somewhat disgusted tone as he did so: "You got those 9s again?" Sadly, my opponent only had pocket 10s for a full house. If he would have had the straight flush the entire table would have garnered a nice windfall; and my "loser's share" of the Bad Beat Jackpot at that time would have been over $93,000.

Mariano is such a gentleman. He has a very subdued demeanor after winning the hand. He knows this hand is a once in a lifetime cooler, and doesn't want to add insult to injury. Bravo Mariano! You are a good guy.
Mariano took this win with massive dignity tough spot for Andy.
He had that “holy crap what a hand,” look on his face but chose to quietly celebrate and Andy did likewise. So nice to see, especially when you see the other side of poker in all stakes, where there’s show boating and trash talking. Not good for the sport. Congratulations Mariano.
Mariano basically won the biggest pot of his life in a sick cooler. In a way, you feel bad for your opponent because you know that could easily happen to you. And also, a real professional knows to not touchdown dance on someone in a pot of this magnitude. Unless it’s like DNegs on Hellmuth because he’s basically got an open invite to troll (and neither will run out of money ever).
depends on what u mean by good for the sport. If you mean making the community put out content you personally find more respectable and enjoyable you’re right. if u mean attracting a bunch of dumbass fish to the game lower the skill required to make a living off of poker as a professional than you’re wrong.
If you want to grow the game with recs that donate their stacks we want showboating and boasting. we want poker to look like a game revolving around drama and a clash of egos instead of a game about silently and logically considering your options. The latter reason is what scares so many people away. It’s the truth whether we like it or not

I do want to say that I have seen the very possible worst hold em bad beat one time at a home game. It was AK of diamonds vs 89 of diamonds and they both got the straight flushes. For the game I was playing, it was a huge pot. So nuts!
Worst cooler I had was A10 of clubs. Board is 7,8,9,J of clubs and a filler. So I blocked Q 10 and made a raise on the river after my opponent checked. Needless to say opponent had 56 of clubs and shoved. Honestly should have folded looking back on it. Opponent can’t have any reasonable bluffs there. Turning KQ of clubs into a bluff would be insane and there are no other blockers.

Agree with the last point most of all. When you overbet river on an unpaired 4 flush board and you have the flushing A, if your opponent snap jams, they are either a complete and total fish or they have a straight flush. There is no third option. If there is no straight flush possible on the board, either you misread the board or your opponent did.
And this is why Doug hates the overbet sizing on the river. If you have the Ad there, then you _have_ to size down to get called by worse, or to have any chance of someone holding worse thinking that they can bluff you out of the hand. On that specific board, holding neither Kd _or_ Td, for that many BB, you have to be pretty intentional about your sizing... and about responding to a jam over any bet.
@@alistairwillock7266 yeah. Literally the only way you can bet this big is if you’re also turning hands like 8d7d into a bluff. Which many players wouldn’t bother to do this deep, because they often just have the best hand and aren’t interested in targeting the Td or Kd for folds. Maybe if your large bet was all of it, you can do that, but they still have a lot of stack left.
I think betting something like $40k would’ve been better here. Andy will have the Ad more often IMO, so checking to check raise seems foolish.
This is my favorite take so far. However, IIRC Mariano was staggering drunk at this point of the game, so maybe Andy thought he hooked a big one?
Back in 2018 twice did my ace high flush lose to a straight flush with no paired board. The first one was at Hustler and the second one was at Hawaiian Gardens.

The problem is, when you have Ax of diamonds your opponent can't have diamonds also because you have two blockers to diamonds and the way pros talk these days, blockers are 100% to negate all possibilities.

Mariano is so humble he knows he was blessed with that and outcome. Andy is solid, took that uppercut like a true pro.
I’ve been seriously enjoying all the Doug content recently, and this is no exception. As to which format of [Say the Line] hands I prefer, I think I slightly prefer the older format. The slightly shorter form, less Doug-centric format of this video has its appeal for sure, but I watch Doug for Doug. It’s your personality that has kept me watching over the years. I can watch Bart for the drier nitty-gritty, but you’re entertaining in an unique way for poker content that only Joey even approaches (albeit in a completely different way).
tl;dr I’m watching regardless, but I like the older way.

Haha happend to me once. I didnt realize that random 85s straight flash was possible. I had biggest suprise pickatchu face ever till i realized why dealer is moving chips from me
@@erikk17 In my early days playing live, I beat nut flushes with straight-flushes (two-card holdings for both players, both times) twice within a 6-month span... And just had no freaking clue how _insanely_ hot I was running. In both cases, I had the open-ended straight-flush draw and my ship came in. One of the victims turned his hand up and told me _"I have the nuts",_ only to hear me reply _"... not on that board you don't"._
I've since been on the other end of it a few times, and managed to _not_ go broke. When you have the nut flush on an un-paired board and get raised in 2023, you'd better pay serious attention to the board before you go buck-wild. If the straight flush is out there and you don't block it, you have to tread _really_ seriously at 400BB plus.

From a professional point of view, I am sure folding odds are greater, but for the typical bottom feeders - as I am, we snap shove, thinking we always have the nutts. In Andy's case, he simply forgot he knew better and gets reminded that he does make mistakes 😂
Andy was gonna get killed in this hand regardless. It was pretty much unavoidable. The only question was if he could somehow find a fold when Mariano re-raised all-in on the river.
You cannot assume that your opponent had the straight flush but I have no clue what else Mariano would be snap jamming with. In theory, maybe a bluff with a straight flush blocker but that seems quite unlikely in a cash game.
I said the same thing. My question would be what would Mariano be bluffing on the river with 4 diamonds showing on the board. There's not that many hands, the fact he 4 bet is the only reason one could consider he be bluffing with.

Realistically this hand is either the straight flush value betting or Mariano trying to get Andy to fold a weakish hand with an even worse hand. Nothing else really makes sense.
Given the betting on the turn I find it hard to believe neither of them had a high diamond, so given that and the snap-jam it looks kinda like the first option. Hindsight is 20-20 and all that though.

It's cool to see Andy comment on here recognizing that river play, props to you man...one thing that nobody has mentioned and is my personal opinion : i thought Andy clearly misread the fact that a straight flush was possible, meaning i thought that in his head he was thinking he had the nuts...the way he A. overbet the river, B. snap called the jam, C. tabled his hand FIRST which people only do in that manner when they think they have an unbeatable hand, D. did that thing right before tabling the hand where you quickly look at your cards 'double checking you have what you have', and E. immediately got up from the table to collect himself (i know you can argue it was a big loss but i'm fairly certain he's lost similarly large pots in the past and hasn't needed to get up from the table, so to me the manner which he did suggests he blundered and needed to get away for a few mins)...yes it was a cooler, but no reason someone of Andy's caliber should lose that much on the river the way the hand was played unless you misread something...anyway just my opinion
He snapped call the jam because he was pot-committed.
If you're gambling with half a million dollars and for a living, you aren't misreading boards. You don't make it this far in a poker career by making mistakes the common man would make.

I saw a guy fold TT on a flopped AAK at Hollywood casino in PA a few years ago when the BB Jackpot was over 700k. It was quad Tens qualifier. A guy when checked to bombed out with quad Aces and another guy got it in with Kings full on an A-A-K . It came running Tens. 99% of the people with quads would just check the flop but this guy was a complete newbie and just bombed it. Tens as played obviously has to fold but If quads checks then dude makes tens full and is never folding at that point. The dude got hauled out by police because he was so irate over it and basically told the guy he would kill him if he saw him outside of the casino. pure madness. That's the worst beat I ever saw.

It's funny how Doug said you have to be some sicko to bluff in Mariano shoes without the goods but Bill K did that repping quads against kims full house and got the fold. It's the only time I have ever seen that sort of bluff but also take in account Bills worth.

I agree. No way you can get away from this hand. You wont play much poker if you see straight flushes or 4 of a kind when the action gets heavy. The odds will win over time. Won’t make a beat like this any more fun, but it’s probabilities (and their variances) that make poker go round.
The guy would not raise with anything at the end except the straight flush Andy having the ace of diamonds honestly shouldve easily realized that being the skilled player that he is

I think this is just a bad spot for Andy. Based on the preflop action, it’s really hard to put Mariano on K/10 diamonds. Holding the Ace of diamonds, and the action pre and on the flop, it’s safe to put him on Ks with the K of diamonds or AK, with the K of diamonds. With that being said, I don’t hate Andy’s river bet based on all that.
Agree 100 % the four bet pre with the k10 makes this hand impossible to get away from without the board pairing.
All the pre flop logic should be disregarded once Mariano snap raises all in on a four flush board. I agree with Doug that if you fold Andy’s hand every time to that small of a river raise in that spot “you will never be wrong”.

At the casino had K9 suited vs a 54 suited. Flop came A23 for the absolute nuts. All the money went in at flop, and even lost to a third player who committed all his chips on just A8 who jagged runner, runner for a full house. Haven't been back the casino ever since :D
With as much as Andy bet on the river its really impossible to fold. He just got fixated on the nut flush and didn't think about the hand. Great play though for both.

I know a lot of pros that would've snap folded on that shove. He clearly isn't doing that with just the king and wouldn't do that representing the ace since its third nuts (plus you have the ace). It's so clear he has the k-10d or 8-10d. Just gotta lay it down.

A4s is a great cash game hand especially with deep stacks like this. Sure I can get behind a fold or a 4bet as well, but calling is also fine with this hand. If Mariano flops the K high flush instead of the straight flush he's probably donating quite a lot as well.
The amount of times someone is going to have the k diamond is going to happen way way more times than this

Ah, the paradox of poker. Only an absolute insane sicko would min-raise all-in bluff that spot and so they probably got the nuts, but only an absolute insane sicko would fold the nut-flush and so they probably a fool if they don't call.

I folded an A high flush once. But it was a 4/8 limit hold'em game and the Ace to 5 flush possibility was out there. Sure enough, they had the straight flush.

By shoving quickly, Mariano was repping a straight flush. If he merely had a king-high flush, his quick shoving could have pushed an Ace-high flush into folding. So that was brilliant. Also, Andy could have been repping a Queen-high flush, so his $120K river bet would seem like an overbet to induce a king of diamonds to call. Also a smart move. I disagree with Doug that the $120K bet was too large. I also disagree with Doug that Andy should have sniffed out the straight flush and folded. For an extra $130K in a $500K pot, and with the nut flush, he had little choice but to call, knowing that Mariano could easily jam with the king of diamonds only.
Actually think Andy might have been able to get away from this if it was someone like Garrett raising this on the river. The overbet on the river plus the instacall of his raise kinda suggests he doesn't think as much of Mariano's game (or maybe he's just a bit tilted

I don't think it's that he doesn't think much of Mariano's game, he's a good player, but he plays an enormous range of hands very unpredictably, so even thinking of folding the second nuts against him in this situation is insanity.

Eventhough it is a huge cooler, no pro should ever lose 1500 big blinds in this situation, especially with the check through on the flop and the 4th diamond on the river.
Andy's betting looked like he never thought about Marciano's range of holdings. And I'm not especially trying to say he should consider straight flush. The bets were also bad against the sets and KK with king of diamonds he could have.
This was one of the best hands of all time. Funny as hell to watch.

I think maybe the title should be "The worst cold deck in Hustler Casino Live history", since it`s not even really a "bad beat", as a bad beat usually implies having the best hand, and THEN getting outdrawn. This hand probably wouldn`t even make my top 50 list of bad beats/cold decks from playing over the last 30 years live and on-line.
Doug. I agree this spot on the river definitely seems like Mariano has a straight flush. But straight flushes are very rare. Alternatively, could it be just as likely (although rare) that Mariano picked up on some sort of tell that Andy was weak (say a visual tell) and decided to bluff minraise the river? Is it always the straight flush here? Sometimes hands turn into street poker and people make crazy bluffs.
this is generally a good point, but Mariano is one of the more "play balanced against everyone at all times" players, if I'm not mistaken he doesn't adjust unless an opponent is wildly unbalanced. but in general definitely something to consider when your opponent seems to be repping a straight flush or nothing
If you're Andy, how are you going to 'read' that Mariano picked up a weak read on you, even though you have an ace high flush? Wouldn't Andy have to know that Mariano has a straight flush, in order to be psychologically aware that his own hand is weak? And if he knew that, how in TF is he going to make Mariano fold?
Do people really think this out during a hand? It seems like massive over-thinking to me. PS how strong would M's read have to be, to bluff shove all of his chips with basically no fold-equity.

The worst bad beat in POKER was when Arieh started with a 3-4-6 draw in triple draw in The Poker Players Championship, when trying to steal and running into #2, got three-bet, and 3-5-6 was essentially priced in.
He turned 3-5-6 into a wheel.
Have you seen the Quad Aces versus Royal Flush in the WOSP? The odds of that are 1 in 669 million... id say thats a worse bad beat :)
@@williamthomas7488no it’s not. The guy who hit the royal flush flopped a gut shot straight draw, and he hit that draw on the turn. Just because the other guy happened to hit quads on the river while also giving the other guy a royal flush doesn’t make it a bad beat to end all bad beats.
Great video Doug .................... I have both lost with AKs on 1097s and won holding 109s vs. AK on JQ8s. But worst moneywise is 66 vs 65 on 653 flop.

it's fun to watch, and i don't think very instructive. I can't imagine a bigger cooler when one player flops ace high flush and the other flops straight flush.
Stacks were all going in the middle no matter how each played the flop, turn, and river.
Your pre-flop insights were very informative, and I watched the whole thing because I wanted to see how both stacks would eventually get in the middle.
