Quiet luxury is having more leg room on a long flight, privacy on vacation, comfortable clothes in fabric that don't pull, pill, or itch, having private viewings of beautiful art/shows... Just being able to enjoy life in a slower more comfortable way with just those perfect touches of luxury; that superior tea blend, that perfume that makes you swoon, truffle oil, silk pj's... Great subject matter Michele!

I always thought of my friend who wore her Gucci loafers in such a way that they were scuffed and well worn, they seemed like a quiet luxury because she just wore them. She didn't save them for special occasions, stored in an acrylic shoe box on display. She ENJOYED the luxury, and the timeless look of the loafer with everything she wore.

Quiet luxury is about not having to stress about making sure Other people know you have money. Just do you because you know the quality and what you have in the bank. No one else needs to know. Go for it!
I grew up in a wealthy family but everything was lost. I had a well paid job I paid for a mortgage and supported my family... I didn't habe much money left, but therefore invested in long lasting pieces, often second hand...
Now almost 20yrs later many pieces are still in my closet, many of these brands offer aftercare services so the pieces last long. I haven't bought anything now the last 2yrs despite some pair of loafers as mine after 14yrs were distressed...
My wardrobe is perfect, from morning to night, i feel good in every piece and don't need to think to much about it...

Maybe not in the “luxury” category, but I have always loved the timeliness and classic of Ralph Lauren and Jones NY. Clean, basic, non-trendy looks. Carolyn Bessette Kennedy started this trend long before Influencers and Instagram existed. In addition to the points you made about why quiet luxury is at the forefront right now - there's also this notion of every blogger or influencer being seen with a certain bag or clothing item making me NOT want it. Even Hermes. When everyone (whether they truly have a sense of style or not) is wearing a mini kelly it dilutes the value, makes me not want it because having the latest trendy logo'd thing isn't appealing to me anymore. I loved this video, and your take on this topic. I can't think of another content creator who could bring this info to us better!

I've always taken quiet luxury to mean lifestyle choices (e.g. shopping at Whole Foods, getting a flower delivery subscription service, paying extra for faster shipping), particularly those that reduce stress (e.g. taking a Lyft instead of waiting for the subway). Grew up kinda upper middle class and my parents once they realized I was into fashion as a kid always, always, ALWAYS stressed to me not to dress in a way that made it obvious AND to choose quality & longevity whenever feasible. It’s stuck with me and has really helped to inform my own personal style & aesthetic. So I’ve been bemused to see “quiet luxury” and “stealth wealth” trending because, as you’ve said, these have long been around and it’s easy enough to spot when you pay enough attention. I think Bottega (the leather version of “Is it cake?”), Prada (sans the more obviously logo’d pieces, such as the latest FW23 collection), The Row, and Bianca Saunders, Armani, Peter Do, etc., are prime examples of luxury brands who embody “quiet luxury.” And napping midday has been my current quiet luxury obsession, especially now that the weather is getting warmer😌

Love your take on this hot topic! For me quiet luxury is wearing the best fabrics (cashmere, cotton, silk or a mixture of these three). No synthetic fabrics. This extends to buying stuff that many people will consider fripperies: Trudon candles, Aesop handwash, Aromatherapy Associates pillow mist, regular massages. I don't agree that simply wearing beige is quiet luxury. Also, it has something to do with a particular bearing, how people carry themselves. Anyone can wear what Gwyneth is wearing but it will not be the same vibe.

I agree and ironically in reality it isn’t about consumption necessarily. A great chef covets cooking knives. Someone else might might their own beeswax wood-wick candles because they love unique scents not typically available commercially. It is about quality and ease.

I am not one to even financially comment about quiet luxury, but I’ll throw my literal two cents in😂 …fragrance. Quality perfume speaks volumes for me. Luxe skincare. Luxe laundry care. Fabrics such as cashmere, linen and organic cotton. I love nili lotan for casual comfort, (if I have to name a brand) but I don’t seek out specific brands, unless it’s in my sunglasses. (Celine, maxmara) I am a middle class jeans and tee girl, but I try to find quality pieces and I usually shop second hand for the benefit of my wallet and the environment 😊…..loved this video. Thank you.

  • @pollysshore2539
    @pollysshore2539 Год назад +5

So “quiet luxury” is the “old money aesthetic”.
I tend to have strong opinions and nothing I’m saying is directed at anyone personally.I enjoy your videos.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with buying quality items that will last longer as opposed to getting sucked into fast fashion. It’s great to shop smarter and wiser. You don’t need to break the bank to this. I live in Southern Appalachia, a place where sewing factories once thrived. Every woman I know that worked for various apparel companies constantly told me to look for quality, check the stitching, check the fabric, try to avoid synthetics, etc… Spend your money on something that will last.
It’s something more people should do.
It’s nice to buy luxury and treat yourself.
I know it’s a matter of personal taste but I’ve never cared for anything with logos all over it. In my personal opinion most logo heavy items look tacky. Buying a $700 hat, a $1500 t-shirt that looks like Haynes or a tank top with an expensive triangle on it would never cross my mind for the same reason. It’s just as gaudy and it’s financially irresponsible.
I think aesthetic trends on social media are fairly annoying. It’s primarily teenagers obsessed with finding one personality/identity to wear until they are bored with it. I remember the teen exploration days well but do not understand why so many seem set on boxing themselves in and figuring out everything now, now, now. It’s not going to happen. I digress.
Videos on how to look old money (how to dress classy, dress the French way) can be gross. Some just have good tips for people when it comes to particular outfits but they can easily go overboard.
The conversations I’ve seen on quiet luxury have already fallen off the boat. A boat that don’t actually exist. Quiet luxury doesn’t really exist. A secret club only exists if you believe the poors don’t know quality. It’s fair to say that classism is involved. There is a good chance that anything related to old money will have several isms baked in.

Quiet Luxury is for the Nouveau Riche who want to be distanced from New Money but can't be Old Money😆

For me, I don't think quiet luxury is all about 'if you know, you know club', but rather wearing stuff with the most comfortable and enduring fabrics that you can enjoy and that can be worn so many times without losing their characteristics. Not to silently expose your wealth to the world.
And also being able to pick beautiful garments even from the cheapest store, combine it with your silent luxury items in a beautiful way. As it is silent, the outfit speaks of its timeless beauty and lets you shine on your own.

Quiet luxury is the ability to donate money and provide assistance anonymously without seeking recognition or acknowledgement. Sending your PJ out to help someone in need, because that is the right thing to do. "Old money" as it use to be stated. As if, you don't need to display to the world what you have, because you already have it! You then simply smile to yourself. Others find out, once they get to know you and that is quiet luxury. You make a good point when you say that quiet luxury is not just about fashion. It is interesting how we have gone from fast fashion to quiet luxury. This is how I see it: Many people are suffering in this economy, and some of us are okay so some of us don't want to look like we are privileged. For me it is not about knowing but just fitting in.

My favorite quiet luxury is my “stealth silk” clothing. I love matte or knitted silk fabrics, because unlike the shiny silk charmeuse satin, no one knows that I’m wearing silk in these and they look more casual. I got really tired of people saying things like “what are you, made of money?, you’re wearing silk!” when I wore “obvious silk”. Stealth silk is my secret luxury, I only wear it because of its sublime comfort and breathability for my hyper-sensitive skin. I love soft fabrics, but can’t wear polyester (allergic), so silk it is. I can comfortably wear rayon, so that’s a great second choice, it has many silk-like properties, but the quality has to be a good-quality, thicker version to look good and perform well. Again, no acrylic (allergic), cashmere instead. A silk-knit turtleneck under a cashmere sweater is the ultimate winter comfort. Allergies to synthetic fibers (plastics) are not that rare, if you get a itchy rash that resembles the fabric texture when wearing them, that’s the clue.

I see this concept of quiet luxury as I look at the tech industry and so many people miss it. From the bespoke t shirts that fall just so to the jeans that are perfectly tailored to pool a little at the ankle then break perfectly at the foot. And finally the logo less hat. They're everywhere among tech industry types. And far too many miss just how much that understated but intentional "average Joe" look costs.

I think this is a reaction against the incessant "cheapness" of fast fashion. We've been inundated with so many hauls of stuff that falls apart when you blink at it and is so micro-trendy that it looks dates within 3 months. Along with the irritation of things being so transient, we're also becoming more and more aware of the ecological impacts of fast fashion. People are looking for "investment" pieces to get away of the damaging (long-term expensive) cycle. And the buy higher quality for long-term economy and ecology feeds directly to the quiet luxury precepts.

Great topic, Michelle! To me, there are three levels of luxury; off the rack, bespoke, and haute couture. (I would never be able to afford haute couture but a girl can dream.) However, quiet luxury equals something not easily identified by the masses and of course is excellent quality and craftmanship. Quiet luxury is buying something because you KNOW and UNDERSTAND why it is what it is and why the price is justified. Quiet luxury isn't meant to show off to the world who you're wearing. You posed a good question about Hermes which my opinion is it's no longer quiet luxury - it's become a status symbol, a way to show off your wealth. The same with LV and the other houses that have their logos plastered over everything. For that money, you can get a custom bespoke bag that truly has the same if not better craftmanship, and the house isn't getting free advertising off of us. Also, to me, quiet luxury is old money, or just someone who wants exceptional quality with limited quantities. I'm with you on spending on the laundry detergent, I got hooked on that Glamwash which I use on the items like you do. However, for my towels, and other clothing, I use those wool balls in the dryer and sprinkle essential oils on them. My towels and clothes pick up the scent and it lasts! PS Your skin looks amazing. I was watching some of your old videos and you've not aged and in fact, your skin glows more now than ever! Appreciate you and the time you put into your videos. I love them.

I love this type of video! I am also very interested to hear more of your thoughts on the creative directors, etc currently steering different luxury brands.

My quiet luxury is a heavy cashmere sweater that I only wear indoors. It's too bulky to wear out for style purposes, but keeps me nice and warm in the winter.

I remember learning about Quiet Luxury in the late 80's early 90's when I was working for a law firm. I remember the attorneys had designer bags without the logos and their pants and jackets were very high-quality fabrics. I think your style is very Quiet Luxury that why I follow you.
