  • Hello! Today we’re exploring the hype around Sofia Richie’s wedding and the idea of “quiet luxury.” I hope by the end of the video you walk away with a clear understanding that it’s bullsh*t

The way the “IT girl” is always being repackaged and appealing to women with little identity and the need to project on wealthy people and live through them. Being 23 I thought it stopped in teenage years because it did for me. Seeing adult women still falling for it is concerning and is really a set back. It is okay to be inspired but when are people going to wake up and be THEMSELVES. Loved this video btw.

You seem highly judgemental. Most women do not follow one trend but just create their own style mixing different esthetic based on their taste. The old money aesthetic though might seem a bit more out there due to the fact is what some people might call smart casual or professional attire.

@@ElizRuedmaking moral judgments is an important part of the modern human experience. When you eventually develop critical thinking skills, making moral judgments and observations about society will make much more sense then.

Absolutely enjoyed this! Can’t wait to see what else you have in store for us. I’d definitely love a part 2 and a video about Dapper Dan and whatever other topic you mentioned. I do feel like the RUclips space has been in need of more commentary channels (by black women) that address the historical and socioeconomic contexts of fashion and pop-culture.

I came from TikTok and love this video! Never understood this desire, that’s been in the rise recently, to play pretend at old money. I know (and the people who make those videos must know) that putting on a costume of old money doesn’t change their economic or social class.
    So what’s the point?
Now, I guess, that some people think that by putting on this aesthetic, putting on this costume, will allow them to rise to a higher economic class. Which… is something… (keep dreaming folks!)
My question is: Why would you _want_ to be part of the old money group? Any family that is old money 100% made that money through racist, sexist, exploitative means and then has continued to just hoard their wealth.
    Old money sucks major ass.
I get that it’s a fantasy to not to have to work or worry about where your next meal is coming from (I want this too!), but adopting the aesthetic of old money does not mean that you _are_ old money. Putting on a costume does not, and will not, make you rich.
In fact, they would probably spend more money trying to keep up appearances. It feels like such a waste of time and money!

Im so glad you made this video! People always think billionaires dont wear designer clothes but in reality they do, people cant tell because they only know louis vuitton, gucci & prada. Hermes was also an exclusive brand until the late 2008/2009 & so was Van cleef until recently. I remember my manager at the bank presenting a slide show & showed a photo of the facebook founder going on a run, I spotted his tshirt & made a comment on the quality, my manager was surprised by my comment & said he buys them for 2,000$ from an European brand which didnt surprised me as I could tell it was a quality shirt despite looking like a random walmart shirt.

I have gone down the quiet luxury explainer video rabbit hole and this was really well done. I absolutely love how you go over the racism built into the love of queit luxury, but I also don't belive that loud luxury is any better for use plebians. For Ritchie, part of the problem is that she was likely sponsored by Chanel, and two it is clearly Chanel (logos shown). Therefore, it is not quiet!

Your video is so good and I absolutely love that you pointed the utter ridiculousness of calling everything that's PERCEIVED remotely 'classy' as 'old money quiet luxury stealth wealth '. Numerous creators also pointed out that it plays into the common people's fantasy of "marrying into money", "marrying into aristocracy".
Ps. I was always drawn to and conditioned by my middle class parents to dress in a certain way, act ladylike etc. to be perceived as 'classy' 'thoroughbred' and so on. The ridiculous thing is, all that struggle can amount to being well perceived as a white/grey collar workers. That's it

Let's not exclude the Black Boule which most do.There has been a silent upper class of black communities. Some that go back as far as the Colonial period. ( Some of the richest slave owners were black) Explore Martha's Vineyard, among others .Look up these facts before rejecting them.

Hip hop and rap, actually originated in the late 1960's, early 1970's , so older GenX, early Boomer creations,
why then is she saying late 80's ,90's ? She needs to double check historical facts.

Regardless of who (sold whom to whom or who was the purchaser), the lifetime labour derived from these purchases was upon pain, torture, or death-- forced, & therefore uncompensated. The people, who were bought as merchandise, were also bred as cattle (i.e., through the use of forced breeding & inbreeding) & lastly, were used as machinery for the wealth of those who purchased them.
