Can Luxury Truly Be Quiet?

  • Hi guys, I'm Eileen. Quiet luxury seems to be trending at the moment. Could it it be that the logomania trend has been celebrated for too long, and people are now ready for a change? Or is it a timely trend to coincide with the grim economy? Either way, do you think luxury can truly be quiet? Some of the low-key luxury bags (with no logo or monogram) are in fact the loudest in the market. Let's talk xx

Let me just say this- one of the best examples of quiet luxury is your channel and your personal style. It’s never going to be about a brand or a particular logo. It’s how you wear them. And you have that mastered❤ love your commentary on luxury items. Until next week.

When fashion is labeled (whether it be "quiet luxury" or "coastal grandma"), I believe that it is another marketing strategy to influence us into thinking we need to jump on the bandwagon. If you love logos, so be it. If you prefer a more subdued look, go for it. We should embrace our uniqueness and follow the styles that suit you and make you feel comfortable and confident.

I have to say it influenced me when I was younger. Getting older really changes the view, so now I’m simply looking for quality or even try to sew things myself. Getting into vintage styles that can be bought second hand also helped me a lot :)
Thank you for being so considerate with every topic !

I don’t necessarily need a logo. I need quality but I do feel self conscious at times and change my choices based on where I’m going. For example, I won’t wear any of my furs to Walmart. (We moved to a small town and do not have a lot of grocery options)

Thank you Eileen. This is a topic of great interest to me, and I appreciate your insight. 'Quiet luxury' is how I have always liked to dress, which is to say I prefer clean lines, quality materials, and no logos, so it's funny how this is now having a moment! You have introduced me to high quality bags in my price range that I've not heard of, like Songmont and Ateliers Auguste. Please share more on this topic and include links! Many thanks

I don’t find my pieces to be loud but I do love a good logo! I think it’s all about balance. I really only purchase from a few designer brands, so my outfits are pretty cohesive and I usually pair them with logo-less contemporary brands so logos don’t clash. I am conscious of who I wear what in front of because unfortunately people do have strong opinions when it comes to designer goods and I’m not always interested in having a conversation about how I spend my disposable income. It’s sad because on the flip side I don’t encounter people who love designer goods that talk negatively about people who aren’t into luxury - usually they are the least judgmental (in my experience) people. When I was younger I assumed it would have been the opposite.
But the consumption of luxury goods seem to entice very strong opinions…

In my opinion, people (are insecure and) want to feel special. Before, they wanted to look “rich” and successful by wearing designer logos. Now, everybody caught up to the fact that wearing designer logos doesn’t mean you’re rich. Thus people invented “quiet luxury” to distinguish themselves from “lowly” logo wearers. It’s sad.

And the rise of “quiet luxury” is a marketing scheme to make people “need” to build a wardrobe from scratch. So the fashion industry can profit from it.
If everyone is happy with their current wardrobe, who’s gonna feed the industry?
I won’t fall for that. I have small logos, big logos, non-brand, no-logo fashion items. I buy what I liked at that time. I won’t ditch / buy something new for the trend or for the sake of looking luxurious.
      The true luxury is freedom.

My issue with this conversation is the obsession with class. Is it not enough for some people to have enough disposable money to buy luxury goods? Do they have to rank where they fall in the hierarchy? Do they have to judge or belittle “new money” which is what loud luxury used to be referred to? Do people have to worry about if others are carrying fakes and are if that devalues or diminishes what they have? Buy what you like and appreciate the relative amount of privilege you have.

Logos mean nothing as there are so many fakes around. I always say wear whatever makes you happy, just be aware of your choices. Because at the end of the day, the question to ask ourselves is, why do I need a (quiet or not) designer bag or tshirt and not one coming from a small unknown brand? What hole inside, what low self esteem, what societal pressure etc etc etc am I filling this way? It can be a fascinating discovery of ourselves and hopefully a road to a better life.

I think there's a place and time for both. I love the practicality of coated canvas but one would be hard pressed to find coated canvas without a monogram. Sure, goyard and faure le page have coated canvas and are more subtle with their logo but LV still has more functional bags and is more accessible in that they have more stores around the world.❤
Leather is beautiful but sometimes one just wants to use a canvas bag.

I don't like the feeling of being Controlled and this is Exactly what I see in Trends. So I buy/wear what I like/love Eileen. I find it hard to Keep Up With the Kardashians... not a cute thing to do when you can't afford to and even if I could, I Wouldn't!🫤 I don't care about the Quiet Luxury Trend as I don't follow trends. Concerning the current Financial Climate - I Am Aware of it, but I'm not buying/wear quiet luxury for this reason...No. Another Awesome Video Eileen. 💛✨️

I agree that luxury goods is exclusive and personal and is what works for you. Whether with or without printed logo is product dependent; LV monogram canvas as you mentioned has value in the printed logo which I love and would want no other way whereas Hermes Birkin has recognizable design that states its value without any logo. Luxury may be quiet or loud depending on how the product is styled instead of solely the existence of logos. Thanks for sharing.

I recently bought a vintage black Delvaux Tempête PM for $700 after intl shipping. That bag may even be older than me but the quality is SUPERB. I have never wanted another bag since. Luxury to me is vintage. Craftsmanship that was able to stand the test of time, love and care from the previous owner(s) who valued their possessions and wanted them to last long. I try to get the best quality for the best value because I absolutely do not believe that the high prices of the popular brands are "deserved" (not handmade, quality issues, unjustified price increases etc).

I started my sustainability journey about 6 years ago and that changed everything for me. Sustainable lables have amazing quality and they are way cheaper than luxury fashion. For me the cost per wear factor us very important and i find with second hand and midrange lables i get the most out of my money. I prefer non branded clothes, but i have to admit I gave in and bought the ysl take-out bag. I eyed it for so long and i got it 2nd hand for €600. It's branded, but I couldn't get the bag out of my mind. If i want something, i always wait and see if i still think about it in 3 months and than i buy it. This is working for me.

LV can be loud but also can be classy, depends on what item. New Celine isn’t that quiet since the new bags have brand’s logo. I like Hermes garden party tote, many people think not worth the money, but hard to tell its brand unless you’re a Hermes fan.

I think companies are trying to make money while a bad recession is happening without being distasteful also I don’t know if people feel safe carrying their expensive bags around in a bad economy, and I think this is true for most husbands if they know the logo it’s well known although I talk about these things to my husband so he knows about all these brands other guys don’t so I guess there are exceptions to this but that is a pretty good rule to follow your friend is right 😂

I have been looking at the LV Palm Spring mini for the longest time. I'm 46 this year and usually prefer bags without logo. But this little backpack is so cute and now that the hype is "over" ( and with the recent price increase), they are readily available on the website. Do you still love this bag? Do you find the monogram too loud? I am also a bit worried that the bag is too "cute" for my age.....

You can't take "quiet luxury" literal. But for me, Bally of Switzerland is the epitome of quiet luxury - understated and under-rated. Any item that does have bold logo branding or a design like the Loewe Puzzle bag are all in-your-face bold luxury that clearly brands the name because they are known and noticeable brands. Ironically, I am that person who never wears brands or logos ever since high school when I was called a walking billboard for wearing a Ralph Lauren Polo paired with Calvin Klein Jeans. I don't understand why anyone would wear a tee shirt with the logo branding GUCCI. BALENCIAGA, VERSACE. It"s a tee shirt that helps market the brand by those that wear it - I get it.

I don’t have a lot of spare funds for luxury at the moment, but if I did, I would still go for the traditional fashion houses. I'm a big Dior fan and greatly admire their quilted leather bags, for example. Personally, I would still go for these brands because they signify luxury to ME. So many of these contemporary brands, fewer people have heard of them, but then again, I don’t know much about them either. To me it would just feel like buying a random bag at luxury prices, and it would not feel luxurious. I don’t feel the need to plaster a logo on everything I won, even if I did have the money, but the whole logo/loud luxury = new money/bad idea is just yet another manifeststion of elitism and I find it tiring. My family isn't wealthy and never had been. There is no point in me pretending otherwise.
