I'm no longer a minimalism addict or a shopaholic | Buying things I enjoy| Moderation isn't cliche.

  • Hi guys, I'm Eileen. As someone with a typical Type A personality, I tend to go all-in with many things I commit myself to. I've spoken about how I overworked to the point of burnout, even though I was already making a healthy living. To reward myself for the hard work, I indulged in regular expensive designer shopping. Later on, when I stumbled across minimalism, I decided to go all in as well. Soon however, I started to feel like I was cutting out things just for the sake of it. In fact, I would even deny myself the things that I enjoyed. In this video, I shared why I'm no longer addicted to shopping or minimalism. I'm still very intentional with every life decision, but I've decided I don't need to be just one thing or the other. If you want to keep doing something, then stop overdoing it xx

Right on time, Eileen. Extremism is my problem too. Moderation is very hard for me . For starters i decided to do a no-buy-year . I will use everything i have first. Financial freedom is my first priority now. Please do some videos on that, Eileen!

I am working hard to use what I have and what I buy and keep. This decision actually shifted my purchases. I began to return perfectly fine items because I already have similar items or I don’t use them. It was difficult at first to let go of these beautiful things. So far I have no regret yet, don’t miss the things I returned. I also feel good using the items I decided to keep. I have 2 house repair projects next year. Financially I must choose between consumer spending and replace roof and sheds. My fingers are crossed for a no buy 2024 (my last consumer spending was 8/31).

I also have type A personality and always go to the extreme.
When I buy a nice handbag, I find myself more eager to buy the next one, even more eager than before that recent purchase. I think that’s an inclination to shop to an extreme.
Now, I set a quota / budget for clothes, handbags, shoes, etc.

When i was a kid, teenager and even in my early working life, i used to be very hard on myself. I told myself i must do well in my studies, work and always comparing with someone else be it my classmate or colleague. Then i felt so unhappy and always so miserable. Now after embarking working life for so long, i learn to let go and i am so much happier now. I just do my best in whatever that i am doing and telling myself i can't control how others feel about me. I am also glad that i took up exercise such as running, gym to distress and i am much happier now. Yes, we need moderation in life rather than be one or the other. Thanks for sharing 😍

I love reading books and holding a actual book in my hands and turning the pages is so gratifying, I even love buying different kinds of book marks.😅Reading is so relaxing and fun and one of my most favorite things to do! Thanks for sharing.😊💙📚

I like what you said. Moderation - think of yin & yang. I love books - the physical ones that are on my book shelves. I donate and recycle some though. I tend to read books digitally now especially old ones that are free on line. I have started decluttered my house one small place at a time. I feel wonderful with a serene house. I find joy instead of grief letting go of somethings.... Thank you for sharing your experiences that may help others.

Being a fellow type A, I could relate to a lot of what you said. I’m at a time in my life where I’m approaching semi retirement and going to be giving up my high stress job for something more enjoyable and more on my terms. I’m asking myself a lot of questions about who I want to be, how I will live a bit more frugally. I love your digital illustrations, they’re beautiful.

I wrote down the tips you said about being responsible, having space, using/enjoying and is the item worth the money. These are good guidelines that I appreciate. :)

Enjoyed this post very much Eileen! Your ability to dig deep and be honest about yourself and what you truly value is a true gift. I wish I had been as young as you are to realize what was truly important to me. I had complete burnout as you did but spent decades doing things and "wanting things" that weren't making my heart happy. I am in the moderation space as you are now - in all areas of my life - and it feels great!!

I like that you are talking about a balance. I watch these videos and see pictures and love it but then I can not put it into practice for a number of reasons. I have been decluttering a lot. In some cases I am decluttering and replacing with better quality and I beat myself up for that. But its quality and it will last. I don't impulse buy anymore and that is huge for me. If I still want something in a month I am generally pretty safe. I have a long way to go still but I am on the right path I think

Thank You for Being Here for all of us, too. There's a thought about doing Less. Time is like a Treasure, it's very Valuable bc you are only granted a certain amount of it. Chosing to turn out Quality instead of Quantity is a way of Appreciating the Treasure of Time you've been given. Think about your Jewelry Collection. You chose each piece carefully keeping the Quantity Limited to Selected Valued Pieces so that you could Enjoy using each piece often. When you make a Video for us, you are Producing a Valued Piece of Artful Wisdom to Share with us. Not Quantity but QUALITY. You show Respect & Honor to your Subscribers to give us "Only the Best". I feel Valued so I pay Attention to what you say & how I can Apply it. It makes me a Better Person when I contemplate on Good Things, offered by someone like you, Eileen, who takes the Time to offer me Words of Wisdom not a Quantity of just Words or Displays of Greed! It's not only Refreshing but Valuable to Me.

I find that once you live a minimalist lifestyle it becomes automatic. I purchase only what I love and if I don't use it after a couple of weeks I don't need it and I'll return it. This way I don't over buy and everything I have I use and love and it makes sense. Also I practice one and done by buying what I love and the best I can afford so I don't rebuy and incur excess cost and waste. Thanks for sharing.
