For years, I envisioned what my life would look like after quitting my stressful day job. To make that life possible, I worked incredibly hard towards achieving financial independence. While having FI is definitely a goal worth striving for, it doesn't guarantee a perfect life. In this video, I share my raw emotions about being on my career break. Since 2020, there's been a lot of talk about the Great Resignation. The media might only tell you the glorious sides of quitting your job, but as with everything else, there are two sides of every coin. So I hope this video gives you a realistic picture about having a career break or retiring early xx

    Dear Eileen,
You quite literally bought more time with your loved ones. And I personally think that 'loved ones' should always include oneself as well. What a briljant decision to make!❤

😁 yup, staying at home for a structured person can get boring…although i am an introvert and need alone time, not working for 3 months got me insanely bored and restless. On the other extreme, Working full time is exhausting. What about working part time, have you considered that? I was working as an employed dentist part time for 2 years and it felt wonderful. Now as an self employed dentist with my own dental practice, juggling patients, business decisions, administration, staff and more in full time i just feel exhausted sometimes. Time for a change, but i an not sure what kind of change. For retirement i was thinking to learn psychotherapy and do that for fun, helping prople

That sounds like an option, although I do believe dentistry is about long term continuing care. That’s why I’m not sure about doing short term work xx

I find it interesting that so many people are defined by their jobs rather than by who they are. When not having a paid job you can create the human contact you want. I volunteer at a charity shop 3 days a week, go to yoga classes 2 days a week, have beauty treatments, meet up with family and friends. Sometimes I just take myself out to lunch. I feel you do too many activities on-line since retirement. Have you thought about joining an art group?

Joining a local art club is a really good suggestion! You’re right, I’ve been quite busy online wise- it’s time to do something that doesn’t involve the internet more xx

You know Eileen, often, I hear people expressing how retirement is not quite what they'd planned/ expected. But then again, retirement to me isn't what retirement seems to be lately. It's amazing but I'm so happy you're sharing this, social media can be rather deceiving. Hopefully this videowill be an eye opener for someone...assuming can deceive you - both Real Life and Social Media. Life is So Real and I Thank You for sharing. I wish you well Eileen...I wish you Very Well.💛✨️

I am in a similar situation as you and my friends have a hard time accepting the fact that I have retired early. They are forever asking me whether I have got a new job 😂, even the ones who are retired. It’s like they think that your job defines who you are as a person. The truth is that I have wanted and planned to retire early 20+ years ago. So far the things I really enjoy is the ability to just pack up and explore the country I live in plus being a lot more active.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I'm in the exact same position. Also a dentist and took an indefinite break from the profession to recharge and explore other options. Time away has showed me that it wasnt the profession, the clinic, the patients that were the problem but my ability to take my schedule in my own hands and setting firm boundaries. Im grateful for this time away and hearing you saying all this made me feel so understood. My coworkers dont really get this. Thank you for sharing

Thank you for sharing, it is a very interesting perspective and I like you being so transparent. On the opposite, my father has been slowing down much more his work instead of retiring and my current professional goal is to do a in-between: slow down work earlier than the age most people retire, but keep a few hours per week as a therapist and do punctual consultations to still enjoy what I actually like the most in my job for many years. I know however many jobs don’t offer such flexibility and it is a reason why I chose my field over other ones! I will continue to follow your journey in the meanwhile because this is very nice to see women take the lead in setting examples of possible career trajectories 👏

Whenever you talk about your early retirement, I am somewhat relieved that I am not the only one who is going through those thought process. Everything what you said, I feel the same. Especially the financial part. I know it will be fine in future but can’t help keep worrying about it and doubting about my value. I understand what you said about ‘FOMO’ too, and it often makes me wonder whether I should go back to resume my career.

    Well said Eileen
When we are on a journey we always think the grass is always greener the other side.
When we are at our prime years we worked v hard to reach our financial goals. When we finally attained the financial freedom, we have a bucket list of things to do when we finally retire.
We relished the idea of not doing anything like enjoying a long break at a resort or pampering our body at a spa which we never have time for.
Spending more time with your family over holidays became a reality.
However after sometime we still feel a void in life.
That is where I am right now.
I actually missed the time of being busy with work schedules and working in a community.
Now I am on a long break and I find myself feeling guilty of not being productive like before.
I am in my mid 60s but I am thankful that I am still healthy and I can still contribute to my community as and when required.
There are people who are not as blessed as I am. I am in a position that I can touch lives and be a mother, an auntie or sister to others and be an inspiration.
Thank you for sharing your life journey.

Most retired people, including my parents, soon find themselves tremendously busy after an adjustment period. I think the key is to get out there and experience new things and see where that takes you. Meeting people, getting into communities, deep diving into new hobbies, traveling. Also starting your own purposeful company or nonprofit can be rewarding in a new way. Helping others in person sometimes is most rewarding. May travel alone - you will meet many people living a nonwork hour life and they are tremendously interesting

I love the words of Mark Twain that you quoted. Retirement has been generally good for me, but I too feel like I am missing human contact. I think we have to feel a purpose each and every day we wake up. The beautiful thing for me is that I get to be with my grandsons. My purpose is to take them to school and pick them up. I know this will be a time I will treasure. As a retired teacher, I will occasionally substitute at the school I worked at. It gives me the opportunity to see the wonderful people I worked with. I am good about having structure on a daily basis, but sometimes I do feel that there is something more that I can do. However, I am grateful for the freedoms I have in terms of having the hectic work schedule. I will figure out what my next chapter will be! Thank you for sharing your feelings, Eileen.

There isn't a book on what you are to do in retirement. I think it will take a year or 2 before your mindset shifts after working so many years. To be honest anytime you do things outside the box its going to be an adjustment. I feel the need for human contact so I signed up for some group activities like exercise group and an in person book club. I notice I was wasting my day so I added a schedule for my week that wasn't just housework. I also signed up for two classes. I am being open for the next two years to see where God leads me and what my new purpose will be and I am not beating myself up for not knowing all the answers. I think being open for the unknown is a great retirement option. Thanks for sharing your journey.

I had a taste of unemployment for 8 years. That gave me a sense of what its like to retire. I didn't like it. Retirement is only a good decision to make if you can keep yourself busy, have family to be around with, and can afford to travel. The most important lesson I learned is keeping yourself busy. There is too much time when retired. I was always working out at the gym during my 8 yrs and meeting up with family, but I was bored, because all my friends were at work. I'm afraid of retirement, because boredom will make anyone insane.

Spending time with your loved ones is the real MVP 🏆 I'm RN 15 years in the industry, I Just recently started to get my money right" raking in 20k monthly from my 2 Jobs and investments after living paycheck to paycheck for a long while. I plan on growing my passive income and retire soon enough to follow my passion. My story & hers is proof that not matter how much you make anyone can go bankrupt when they're irresponsible with their money. I didn't get education on personal finances from my parents or in school and I learnt the tough way. I wish money management is taught in schools for the younger generation. I made sacrifices for the sake of the larger good. Reduced spending, economical living, budgeting and saving. When done properly investing increases wealth however piling up so much in the bank will only generate 0.1% Allow your money to work harder for you I learned all this with the assistance of a financial advisor who guided me through the baby steps and I'm teaching my kids the same with her assistance
