My coworker at my old firm was in her late 50s and was always so fashionable. She and her husband had money but never looked like she boasted about it. She was not a label person. She just always looked put together, even if she was dressed casually that day. This is quiet luxury 😊

      I like it!
I work in a wealthy suburb as a nanny/housekeeper and I always get a chuckle to myself when people compliment my attire/appearance. Once a grandma asked me if I had a date that night, and I just had on a black Loft tee and a skirt I paid less than $10 for at Ross. It’s sad that being clean and sharp has become uncommon.

I like the term quiet elegance. Luxury equates with something being expensive but elegance can’t be bought. Many years ago before the quiet luxury trend became a trend a sales associate in a store said she always noticed people who dressed quietly. Their clothes whispered instead of shouted “Look at me” Whether it’s a trend or not I have been, and will continue to be all in. Thank you Jennifer!

Yes. Quiet luxury to me, means strictly luxury brands. I remember I heard it first during the gwenyth Paltrow trial (maybe on this channel?!). But quiet elegance allows it to encompass non luxury brands

My core personal style preference is "Elegance".
I love your term "Quiet Elegance".
It appeals to me as an introvert.
The current Quiet Luxury look is all about clothes that look new.
I prefer a softer, more lived in look.
The challenge is the fine line between shabby chic and plain shabby :)

i personally don't think the quiet luxury look is about things that look new at all. imo its more about classic pieces. i think the term maybe thats more reflective of that lived-in look is relaxed elegance. or maybe elegant chic. @@softsophisticate

I love quiet luxury. My mother told me when I was a teen that old money had no need to show off and new money had the need to be flashy and brand oriented. Btw, we had neither, haha. Anyway, I have always embraced the quiet luxury. It is always classic and in style.

I'm 68, and I've never been a person of means, I've always shopped for the highest quality i could afford. Classic has always been my style in adulthood. I've never been a fast fashion person & was greatly dismayed when so many of the textile and clothing manufacturers moved out of the country. Acquaintances have given me grief over the amount that I paid for some item or where I shopped. (I live in a small town...🙄) I simply explained that I could wear it for years. I love the fact that the fashion industry is embracing this style, at least for brief while. 😊

This fall I found 3 cashmere sweaters on Poshmark for a STEAL. My goal is to take special care with them and wear them for years and years. My mother was the queen of quiet luxury. I thought it was boring when I was younger. She's gone now but I have long since appreciated the beauty of her subtle quality, silk, cashmere, jeans, loafers look for years. My role model. She also had a ten item wardrobe but never labled it as such. I am excited about this as well! You've been dressing this forever Jennifer! Makes me smile!

So many comments saying this, but it’s neat to have a term for this “style”. ☺️ Another reason I love a more simple look without labels everywhere is that I do not appreciate supporting brands that do not match my values. The next purse I shop for will be a brand like Mark and Graham that doesn’t feel the need to have their name on the outside.

This is how I dress mostly in fall and winter. I have a uniform: black thermal tights, merino wool skirt above my knees, a couple cashmere sweaters (I can’t stand being cold), and a cashmere cardigan. OR a velvet dress. In the summer I go for 50’s dresses, satin pink dresses, or long house of ch ones. My style comes alive but still put together.

And I could see that it’s a subject you love! Yes, I would love to see a video on investment shopping! I also especially liked what you said (I rephrase as I understood it) about the Quiet Luxury being like a lens through which one looks at one’s true style. Like you, I enjoy both classic and whimsical items of clothing, and I could not let go of the whimsical because it’s really me, and at the same time, I don’t want to always wear whimsical pieces of clothing (if my explanation makes sense!) Quiet luxury seems like a classic way of carrying yourself. I am done buying T-shirts that get holes in them after a few months. I would love a video on higher quality clothing items. I’m so frustrated with the current quality of mall clothing! I even purchased the v neck sweater from mott + bow per your recommendation. 😊

    • @softsophisticate
      @softsophisticate 10 месяцев назад +1

If the holes are near your belly button, it is likely made from a belt buckle - a very common occurance.
I no longer wear t-shirts, at 56 they do me no favours.
I now go for short sleeve, light cotton/viscose/linen, pretty tops or blouses.
Just as easy to put on, just as cool to wear, but looks like I made an effort in an effortless way :)
The effort occured when, like you, I realised t-shirts no longer worked for me - too scruffy, too sporty, and I had to put in the time and effort to think of and shop for alternatives.
My casual outfit formula is now jeans and a lovely top - either a lovely colour, fabric or print, or all 3.
Short sleeve in summer, long sleeve in winter with a cardi.

As young dance majors, years ago, my roomie and I would head out for our weekly treat - Sunday night dinner at a local neighborhood restaurant. We always wore jeans (freshly laundered, no rips or holes) and a blazer. Years later, I made a cross country trip from Virginia to Oregon, and although it was summertime and quite warm, I would put on the same navy gabardine blazer to elevate my jeans and white tee when checking into hotels. It was a quiet luxury presentation to the front desk and I believe it also reflected the way I was treated.

Well fitting jeans, a gabardine blazer, a couple of tailored white tees, a navy or black cashmere pullover, and good shoes. An ankle boot will serve you well both with pants and skirts. As to the idea of "investment, Frye boots, for instance, have escalated in price but if you ever decide to sell them, they will hold their value.

@@cjdflkjthis is not what is meant by investment clothing. It's the "returns" that are invested. Investment clothing is high quality, lasting many seasons throughout the year, lasting many years, et al.. The savings comes from not replacing the clothes so often.

That is an interesting point (although you can regain some spending if you decide to sell on high quality pieces). For me, the term "investment" used in this context relates more to investing in ourselves, ie developing our own style and self esteem, and presenting ourselves in the best light (perhaps like the Italian idea of La Bella Figura". h@@cjdflkj

Quiet luxury is also about consideration of those around you. Basic manners. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
In a time in history when so many are struggling with high costs and inflation, quiet luxury is a way for the wealthy to "turn down the volume" on their wealth and show sensitivity to the masses who are genuinely struggling.
Any kind of bragging around wealth is always distasteful. But, the timing of this trend is definitely not a post-2020 coincidence.
Not wealthy, but it lines up perfectly with my minimalist/classic/neutrals/modest taste.

My condolences for your wonderful father, who was always there for you. Please take your time to mourn. My prayers to you and your family.❤
I lost my father in August 2014 after an almost three-year battle with kidney disease and cancer. It left a hole not only for our family but for the community, as he was a surgeon in my small hometown. Therefore, my daughter lost her father figure and was depressed during the entire school year and is still mourning nine years later. Knowing that he is watching over us is comforting.
    My questions:

Thank you Jennifer. I am looking forward to see and hear about what is coming for spring 2024. I am slowly building up a good wardrope, piece by piece. But I need inspiration for the next 6 month. What I had before did not work for me,so I got rid off most off it, and start from scratch with a few good pieces. 😘

Love quiet luxury! I have a black cashmere blazer from 20+ years ago! I’ve yet to try it on as, even after significant weight loss, I fear my arms may still be too large to comfortably fit! Maybe a lovely sleeveless top may help?! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻 YES, open to all tips you offer, Jennifer! While I doubt you go thrifting, you frequently surprise me ❤

This is not a trend, it's good common sense in styling. Impeccable taste has no expiration date, I say. I recently saw a photo of Ann Getty from 1977 in Town & Country recently. She is walking out of her home with her footmen and butler. I'd wear her entire look right now today. If it weren't for the caption, I wouldn't have known what decade it was because nothing screams at you. She just looked well put together. It's timeless, dignified, tasteful and elegant. For what it's worth, you embody that Jennifer to me. Blessings always💕🌷😊🍂🍁

As I started to listen to this video I was put off. I found it arrogant. But as I continued, I calmed down. By the end I found I had enjoyed it. My own wardrobe is not large, but almost everything is high quality. It’s made up almost entirely of hand-me-downs (i have an older sister whose work demanded high quality clothing) and thrift store!consignment store items: shoes, suits, slacks, shorts, blouses, swimsuits, golf clothing, sweaters, outerwear. I enjoy wearing as much of my wardrobe as I can, as often as I can.

I love quiet luxury! For years now I've been moving toward this goal. It takes a while to save up for good pieces. I do have the Skye skirt now and love it. Though I may need it hemmed around the waist? I also have the Oliver Cabell Dream mule in camel. I'd love to get some silk, cashmere, and linen clothes as well. Nice video. It might be helpful to give examples of people who may have a quiet luxury vibe but enjoy wearing more saturated color and maybe a more glam style personality or a different cultural aesthetic. For instance, I love colorful African prints, chunky jewelry and headwraps which are wonderful, long-lasting fabrics...definitely going to be noticed and some may consider it "flashy" but not inelegant in my view.

I think many fans of the Daily Connoisseur appreciate Elegance and it is their core personal style.
Elegance is simple, with softness and flow.
A poster above came up with the term Quiet Elegance instead of Quiet Luxury. I like that.
I think your scarf epitomises Quiet Elegance - quiet colour and elegant flow.
I think you can also be elegant and flambouyant and wear bolder colours and prints.

I agree that there are many ways to be elegant. Most discussions of quiet luxury are very New England/British oriented. I recently bought a nice handbag with no logo in orange. It contrasts nicely with all the bright linen dresses I wear in southern Florida. Neutrals do not work with my skin tone and gray hair. I'd fade away.

I do appreciate the aesthetic of quiet luxury and simple classic dressing but I do have a few problems with this. While some of the quiet luxury look can be recreated on a budget most of the brands associated with this style are really over the top, I'm talking thousands per peice. I hope it doesn't turn into a I'm better than you thing! Also it seems like another trend from celebrities that the average struggle to achieve, especially with the economy and inflation the way it is. And again I love this look and have never been a slave to labels or flashy dressing but wonder if this will be another thing that people seek to purchase. I'm probably not explaining myself very well, sorry for that. Thanks for the video Jennifer and definitely nothing against you.

At one time most people dressed in a quiet manner no matter what your social class or income were. It was considered good manners. When I was younger it was seen as ostentatious to be flashy. My parents and grandparents were some of the most elegantly dressed people I’ve ever known. Both had limited budgets, my grandmother made most of her families’ clothes, and neither were even close to being affluent. While this is a concept made fashionable by celebrities recently it once was how most people dressed. I’m 64, I’ve seen a lot of trends come and go.

@@robynwells8249 I completely agree, my parents and grandparents were the same. At that time being well groomed and dressing presentable were the norm, it is so sad how times have changed, I miss seeing people dressed in the day to day, it's a shame to even have to say .

I love this look. I have noticed this Fall so many looks that remind me of how I dressed when in my 20's in the 1980's. Very similar to you. I am happy to see a return, and also an interest in natural fibers. My look is classic, romantic, feminine. I do have a challenge of budget, so keep my eye on sales and thrift. Size as an XL or 1X senior can also be a challenge. I just found some rose suede loafers on sale, and look forward to wearing them with my rose cashmere sweater.

Dear Jennifer, I am starting to dislike this trend because it is quite superficial. If someone wants to have that aestehtic, please go ahead, but I think we should return to cultivating internal luxuries more such as education and politeness. This quiet luxury trend feels like a trying hard to appear not trying too hard. I feel like this trend just gives people more ammunition to judge others. And I think judging others is the most inelegant thing to do.
