I was instantly reminded of a story my dad told me. He said his aunt was always prepared for company. It seemed she always "knew" when company was coming. There would always without fail be a fresh baked pie, even if someone dropped in on her. He said he was curious how she managed this. Now I totally know her secret, she lived everyday this way as a formal affair. She made pie, probably for tea time everyday and was always using her best, and if someone stopped by they actually felt she had brought out her best things for them. Such a lovely revelation.

My mother lived in a senior apartment building for the last 20 years of her life and this building had a daily luncheon service. The service put everything on disposable plates and used plastic cutlery. My mother would bring her own dishes and transfer her food onto real plates; she brought her own silverware, a placemat, a coffee cup, and cloth napkin. Others in the dining room would marvel at her habit of doing this. She really elevated this mundane luncheon service to a classier and more formal affair. Oh yes, and she was always immaculately dressed.

I learned to live a formal life from my mother. She, and her home, are always pulled together, even today at age 90. We were recently at her doctor's appointment and each person who entered the room from the nurses to the doctor said "you ladies are so fancy!" or dressed up or some other statement like that. We were wearing simple black pants and tops, and a gold chain for her and silver for me. This, apparently, made us fancy:) People are so used to the casualness of our society now, that adding jewelry to a basic outfit elevates the entire look. I love all of your ideas. Thank you!

I relate to your experience. The women in my family have always been formal (and always on a budget). I always wear dresses and hats. People tend stare when I'm out and one day someone said that I look like I'm going to a tea party. My response was "thank you". 😅

Hi Jennifer. I’ve been enjoying your channel for several years now. I really started incorporating your IF and homemaking tips over the last year, and then I was diagnosed with cancer. I’ve continued to watch your videos through my treatments over the last five months. I’ve had to move for treatment, and I’ve not been in my home with my husband and kids since they began. Watching your videos has made me feel like I’m home, in a beautiful place instead of a hospital; and has helped me to look forward to when my family and I are all together again under one roof. Praise God, I finished chemo yesterday and had a clear scan! I can’t wait to get back home with my family and continue the art of homemaking with them. Thank you for putting some joy in my life with your videos during this time.

My mother was putting together an event to celebrate the 60th anniversary of her Parish. She and the other lady organising it went hunting the op shops and gumtree (like craigs list) and found candelabras and crystal and everything for an elegant evening. The organised the food also. Tables, table cloths, everything was perfection! The rave reviews made everyone realise how starved for elegance and effort we are! She was so proud of what they achieved and the bar is now set very high.

This needs to be a series, Jennifer.🥰💄💐
Most people must watch their budget these days, and with inflation, it is necessary to be intentional about using our imagination to be a "daily connoisseur" of poise, class, beauty, formality, excellence, etc.
As well, I truly believe these concepts and ways of living are for everyone. If everyone treated themselves and everyone around them like they are royalty, deserving of the best they have access to, the world would be a much better place.♥️🇨🇦

Much of living a formal life is who you are as a person. Dress, speech, your de-cluttered environment, and most especially your thoughts are under our control. Really, it’s about what’s in your head and your actions gravitate towards your thoughts. This channel clearly gives the practical steps. Thanks Jennifer!!💖🥰💐

I enjoyed this immensely, thank you Jennifer. I generally do these things, but it always helps to be reminded and see how like-minded people do it.
This morning I let the kids light the candles on the table, set by the fresh bouquet I picked yesterday, put on my “tea party” playlist of classical & Celtic music, and we enjoyed our French press coffee with a homemade, healthy, banana-walnut- oatmeal cake for breakfast. Cloth napkins, real plates, -oh and I put on a nice outfit with earrings (as usual). My son asked me, “Are you going somewhere?” 😄 I have all boys, but I hope they will remember these little touches of dignity and simple, gracious living despite not being wealthy. We live in a small house in a take-out kinda neighborhood, but you are so right, it doesn’t take much money at all to elevate life into something beautiful, joyous and peaceful.

This was excellent! I am actually dressed up a bit to go to Home Depot and it never fails to elevate my mood. Your tips focus on our senses. A very old decor book I have recommends having something interactive set up....think chess board, jigsaw puzzle on a pretty table, nuts to crack with nutcracker, a coffee station, a recent photo album to peruse, even an open piano with simple music, to serve as an invitation to participate. Using my favorite perfume makes me feel formal too.

Jennifer, I appreciate all your videos tut I see by the comments this video is especially helpful these days as people have become too casual. I’ve always dressed my best every day and feel better about myself. I’ve become a bit “lax” in my keeping my home decluttered. My husband died suddenly three years ago, and it’s easy to ignore some things like keeping things tidy. I often hosted tea luncheons for friends and my husband and I always enjoyed having friends come over to our house for dinner. I’ve gotten away from that with being alone and going through “Covid” the past couple years. I am presently undergoing radiation for treatment of breast cancer which is limiting my time and energy level, but after I’m finished in two weeks and my energy level returns, I’m going to try to host more gatherings at my home. You are very inspirational for women of all ages. Thank you for your suggestions and encouragement. God’s Blessings…

I bought the Victoria magazine that you were featured in and since have ordered a subscription. I definitely feel elevated when I read that magazine. I had been in a bad routine of ordering magazine subscriptions and then not reading them. So when I set up my new routines upon turning 70 years old in addition to reading a chapter a day from a nonfiction book and a fiction book I also read an article from my magazine. If I am actually reading them I don’t feel like I am wasting money buying magazines. Thanks for all your encouragement over the years.

I didn't realise until then how comfortable in my formal clothes I felt. I feel ready for anything - unexpected meeting or spontaneous night out etcetera in my formal clothes. This was a huge shock to me as I thought I was the queen of casual. As a teenager I only wore my brothers hoodies with my jeans and runners (sneakers/trainers). Now I have a wardrobe full of dresses and cardigans. The teenager version of me would not recognise me now = Ms Chic.

Your video came at a perfect time. I did all five tips this week. I constantly have classical music playing at home-it really feels like I entered royalty when I listen to Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, etc. 🎵Because of guests for afternoon tea, I set the table and wore an elegant summer top and skirt ensemble. With the prospect of moving to a smaller house in the near future (my only child is in college), I cleared clutter from top to bottom in preparation for a visit from a young couple who is interested in our house. Yes, I love reading proper books. In fact, I was at the library this morning. I am going to read How the World Really Works by Vaclav Smil after work today. 📚 BTW, I just had your delicious coconut ricotta pudding garnished with berries for my afternoon tea today. 🍓🫐☕️

Me too. And kind of "trying too hard". There's a fine line between warm and inviting and having guests perching on the edge of the couch for fear of crushing the carefully smoothed and placed cushion. And those stiff, spiky, perfectly fanned flower arrangements in oasis. I had an ex with a mother like that, she was such a try-hard, condescending name-dropper too. It all felt so stilted.

Thank you for the reminders! There is a book that I keep nearby and return to read. Creating a Charmed Life by Victoria Moran. It is a daily read of short tips to keep it real! We all need a little push to do our best. A few years ago when we were painting our kitchen, I ran out quickly for sub sandwiches for a quick, easy lunch. I had on the paint clothes, no makeup, had not even brushed my teeth that morning! Well, guess who stood directly behind me in line while waiting for our sandwiches? You guessed it, my Administrator! He carried on a conversation with me and probably didn't care or notice my appearance. But I told myself that day, I will never leave the house without basic hygiene and at least some minimal makeup! And to this day, I still live by that rule!

Yes, oh one thing I definitely need to work on is decluttering. I have slowly transformed our little rental unit into something I feel happy to use and to share if we have people over. But get sick and that's weeks of things randomly sitting on our dining table! And thank you, you know that negativity experienced in elevating your space is something I've encountered over the years with dressing. I love dressing well, and it can be mind boggling as to just how passive aggressive some may be. I once had a friend in my 20s insist I should just dress casually in trackpants to see how I feel. I think she thought I was dressing nicely to prove something. Lol! And I did try just wearing trackpants just for her 😅and my report back was that I didn't feel my good self, you know?🤔When I look back I realise it wasn't my insecurities, it was hers perhaps. It's those little lovely touches that bring joy to those small moments. I learnt from aunts who learnt from aunts to put your best foot forward and I love all that, which is why I embraced it...even though we do live in a very casual society these days. Lots of food for thought again, Jennifer! Thanks for reminding me of all the lovely little things that make the everyday that bit special! 💕

I really enjoyed this video and I needed these reminders. How you dress really affects how you feel about yourself. In the 90s I had a job where we had to wear suits everyday (skirts only no trousers for women). I never felt more capable and powerful as I did in my suit and heels. I spend most of my time at home these days but I know I would feel better if I upgraded my attire and my table setting on a daily basis. Even a t-shirt dress with earrings would make me happier at this point. Thanks much!

Began dressing more formally in my everyday life about a year and a half ago. I used to just go run my errands in a casual jeans and T-shirt, thinking that anything more formal than that would be viewed as weird or like I thought too highly of myself. It's hard to look around you, see that everyone is wearing what I refer to as "depression chic", and not feel obliged to follow suit. But dressing nicely has been one of the ways that I kept myself from staying in negative and depressive mindsets. It goes along with eating the right way and getting sleep and excersise.

Jennifer, here's a Feng shui tip that I hope you'll consider concerning your dining room plants. Whenever you place a plant on the floor always elevate it with some kind of plant stand or beautiful planter. This is a sign of respect since anything put directly on the floor can be seen as unfinished or disrespectful. Also, it moves the energy upwards which is always positive. 🕉 ❤️ 🪴

My husband is a fabulous cook and I'm the dishwasher. Recently, I started setting the table with our very best china and glassware, even though I have to wash it by hand. (I know, it's two plates!). We have no heirs and are in our late 60s. This IS our best life. During COVID, I became much more aware of making each day an event. I went so far as pretending my home was a hotel. I made it a habit to put a lemongrass scent into the atomizer after loading the breakfast dishes and we play music during the day and dinner. Every morning I have my cappuccino in a mug I bought during a trip to England. It honors the Queen's Jubilee (we were in England just after she died). The mug wasn't expensive but I love the feel of the smooth china and the pretty colors. And then, finally, after years of your suggesting I write in a daily journal, I do, sitting outside on my lanai. It's made such a difference that sometimes my husband will ask, "Did you write in your gratitude journal today?"

I make tea every morning for my son, coffee for me, with milk. I light a candle, put classical music on RUclips on my phone. My son is 6,5 years old. He is very hyperactive but he sits straight when I straighten myself up in the chair, he stirs the spoon in the cup in 12-6 o’clock motion and he excuses himself from the table with “may I be excused?” I dress him in a shirt and myself in a dress everyday. (He used to hate it, now he’s okay with it). We both wear hats outside. Always. Of course he would love to wear t-shirts with pictures and advertisements for Disney like so many of his friends. I do allow them when he goes to play in the garden, for sports or when he goes to bed. But by now he knows that when he wants to walk in town with me he has to be presentable, and so must be I. I’ve been on this journal for a couple of years now, thanks to Jennifer (and other elegant ladies) and I must say that although I come from Europe where the culture has not been so dumbed down yet, the society has also became increasingly more casual than let’s say 20/30 years ago. When we go out now, we also get compliments regularly on every single outing (my son especially as people are not used to see kids dressed formally anymore). We are by no means over the top - it’s just that the “leggings-society” isn’t used to see a normally formally dressed person anymore. 🤷🏼‍♀️
I will love to connect with all of you beautiful elegant ladies from around the world, if you wish, please let’s connect together on IG. I’m at kristina_anna_elizabeth and I will love to see your pictures, how you dress and how you decorate your home (that’s what I share a lot in my pictures there).
