Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep models to get software adjustment after crashes and injuries reported
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's investigation into the Monostable gear shifter used by a number of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles is turning into a recall; FCA will recall approximately 1.1 million vehicles worldwide to modify the operation of the shifter that has now caused 121 accidents and 41 injuries.
The issue itself is not a fault of engineering but rather design, as the shifter returns to the default center position without giving the driver sufficient feedback as to the selected gear.
As a result, a number of owners have exited their vehicles thinking that they had put the vehicle into Park, while in reality it remained in Drive or Reverse position. The NHTSA has called the operation of the shifter "unintuitive" and had opened an investigation into the issue months ago.

If the guy can't tell you what the "S" is on the shifter, you know this is going to be a legit explanation 😂😂😂
I think im the only one that is 100000% in love with this shifter
The Rusty Scooter I like it a lot too
No, I am refusing the update fix because I think the shifter is awesome just the way it is. In two years I have not made any shifting mistakes and I don't even have to look at the shifter or dash to find the desired gear, I am that used to it.
People are idiots why not recall every standard vehicle because people can forget to set the parking brake
I LOVE my shifter. my wife won't drive my car because she hates it....hmm not going to complain!
I drove these when I worked valet and these are the best and most comfortable shifter to me.
I've used this shifter for the past 3 years, it's not bad at all, you just have to pay attention to your dash, after time it becomes muscle memory to do those quick taps for reverse, i always pull the handbrake up anyway so it's never rolled on me even if i left it in neutral.
With most things that involve driving a vehicle you just need to pay attention to what your doing. I never half hazard switch into gears even with a automatic
I have not had issues with my 2015 GC. I believe it is a combination of the shifter and the keyless start/stop engine button that causes the problem. If FCA used a regular key, you would have to have the vehicle in Park to remove the key. I have parked my jeep and exited without shutting it off.
This shifter in my Dodge Charger from my time with it has been amazing modern and luxurious. After using it 2x after I first interacted with this fancy shifter years ago I just knew which gear it was in and it’s always in the right selected gear for me. But hey everyone’s different :)
The only thing i like about the shifter in mine is switching to sport mode. I cant tellyou how many times if missed reverse. If the detent (the "clicker") were a little more defined for reverse it would be a lot better. But mine will automatically park with the door open in reverse. Not sure if that was a software deal added before i bought it.
My mom has a 15 and the dealership did a software update so it stopped doing that and it works fine and she has had it since feb 2015
doesn't the brake need to be applied to start the vehicle before shifting anyway? just curious...
Six years later... S is SPORT mode. When in D a quick tap rearward puts the transmission into SPORT mode with different shift programming. Much quicker off the line and holds gears to a higher rev point before shifting. This is completely different from using the steering wheel paddles. Also when using the paddles if you want to exit that mode a quick rearward tap puts the trans back into regular automatic.... As to the Anton Yelchin incident, Jeep did have a recall that provided a reprogramming for the system so now when in any gear other than PARK, if the driver door is opened and no brakes are applied the trans instantly goes into PARK. I've tried it and it works every time. All that being said, I love this system and MUCH prefer it to the newer traditional offerings.
The latest software recall took care of this issue. A few YT vids shows the new setup. Another feature with the update is the transmission will automatically shift to P if you turn off the engine and you are still in the R or N or D position. Alot of people would think they shifted to P when they stop and ready to turn off the engine and leave the vehicle.
How much does something like this cost to get done the software update?
@@RB-nh3rb it's a recall and costs nothing. Take your vehicle to a dealer and they would flash the software for free... it will take around 6 hours
On our 2012 Jeep you can accidentally shift it sideways into manual. The really stupid thing is no matter what your speed is it shifts straight into 1st. It is ridiculous. My Ford Flex has a manual and you can shift it and it automatically shifts down one gear. Now if it did that it wouldn't bug me so much. We don't use the manual but it has been bumped before and shifted into 1st.
My JGC 2014 gives me the error message "Service shifter " and gear doesn't change. I'll hit on the shifter like many times and sometimes it comes to life. Sometimes it doesn't. So bad. Jeep quoted me a hefty price for shifter replacement.
With my car, reverse has a lock but is easy to engage reverse. First and third are kind of close. No backup camera and no indicator so I really have to pay attention to what gear I'm in
I do not feel safe driving my 2015 Grand Jeep Cherokee! My car has on several occcassions jumped back into park while trying to put in reverse or drive. I took it in for recall but continues to jerk and pop back into park! Happened again today and is back at the nearest dealership being looked at again! I would not recommend this vehicle to anyone!!
Saw this video many years ago and came back today!
Mine dosnt have a camera how do I put one?
If you have the 2014 limited and you leave the car and it’s in reverse and you get out it puts the car into auto park
This shifter is great, it has the feature that when you turn off your engine it shifts automatically to P (park) without worrying about leaving the SUV in gear. JGC 2015
Another characteristic that sucks about it is when in neutral in the automatic car wash, to get back into D, you gotta apply the brakes while shifting. In a "regular" vehicle, you can just pop the shifter into D and be on your merry way. This might sound petty, but it is aggravating to me. It's a feature not a bug.
Facts, basically have to feather the brake just enough to disengage the shift lock but not hard enough to stop, pretty fun game lol.
Reinventing the wheel at its best or should I say worst
I really like these Grand Cherokee’s and am looking at buying one right now. A 2015 Overland to be exact but I’ve herd really bad things about the transmission’s in them. Have you had any problems with your transmission? The one I’m looking at has the 6 cylinder in it though and I’m pretty sure yours is a v8?
Just bought a 2015 grand cherokee myself a V6. No problems
The reflash fixed this already
Mopar shifter dangerous? Absolutely love it
I own 2014 gc overland and I love it you just need to know how to use it it's easy but because of some people complains they change it to to stupid old design
Interesting. I appreciate this insight; always kinda wondered what exactly happened in Anton Yelchin's case. I do think this design failed him and others before the tragedy.
R is in-between N and P. I still dont see how you could misjudge it that bad. Its like he had to try really hard to kill himself or the stars just aligned.
@@WeFreestyleForever Certain 2015 Jeep Cherokees are being recalled by Chrysler because they can unexpectedly shift to neutral, increasing the risk of crash. The transmission sensor clusters may have insufficient crimps in the transmission wire harness and this can cause the transmission to unexpectedly shift to neutral
That’s the recall
I mean you can feel it change as you putting into whatever gear you’re putting it in, I only had my Cherokee for 6days and I’m already accustomed to it, I guess cause I’m young it doesn’t bother me I actually like it…… not only that if I leave it into gear with the door open it goes into park on its own🤷🏼♂️ seems like a driver error
I’m looking into buying a Jeep like yours
I have a 2015 jeep grand cherokee limited and have never had a issue with this shifter. It is a 4,800 lbs object on wheels ,produces 290 hp and capable of 140 mph. How about pay attention... dont get too confident about what gear you are moving in with out looking. Going into reverse with the 2015 jeep grand cherokee and not moving is a safety measure. Going in reverse requires more attention then drive therefore when it is in reverse the vehicle will not move until you engage with your foot on the pedal. Be more attentive to what you are doing when operating a vehicle.... its not hard i went from a 2012 jeep wrangler sport to a 2015 jeep grand cherokee limited with this style of shifter and had no problem
They broke two of the fundamental rules of human interface design. Consistency of standards and visibility of system status
I'll give you visibility of system status, which could be more clear. You can't however, stifle innovation just for the sake of standards consistency, though.
I can’t believe the chime doesn’t go off non-stop if you open the door with it in gear. I’ve never had a vehicle that didn’t do that.
You forgot one other rule. "Stupid is as stupid does" you cannot engineer out stupidity.
If im making a 3 point turn i throw it in park or in neutral on a regular basis and its kinda of annoying when it happens but its not a huge deal. I wouldnt call it dangerous. Its just user error
If you piloted an airplane instead of driving a GC, would you get out of it before shutting down the engine? C'mon you are expected to pay attention to what you are doing.
That’s happened actually at my airline. The crew went to the hotel
Cars aren't planes, and there are plenty of reasons to get our of a vehicle with it still running. I'm sure it happens millions of times a day in the US.
Yikes, what an absolutely abysmal comment.
I have one and I love it also. I swear some people are always looking for something to friggin whine about. If this is your idea of something that makes your life hard then you need to re-evaluate yourself in a big way!!!!!!
Bobby Graham i just bought a 2015 Grand Cherokee, any advice?
Tell that to Antons parents 🙄🤡
I like the shifter. You just have to know how to use it. Takes some getting used to.
I love this shifter!!
It certainly took some getting used to. I still prefer the 99-04 era shifter.
Me too
Almost backed into a car one time thought I was in park
First up, apply the parking brake firmly when leaving the vehicle - that's the law. If it doesn't work properly - get it fixed. That's the law.
Secondly, this shifter should have been banned by the authorities. It is in charge of a vehicle that can kill and must be straightforward to use. It may become familiar with extensive use but what about when it gets worn and sloppy (read unpredictable), or a learner drives it for the first time?
And Nader chewed out GM in the 60s for having Low next to Reverse!
When the door opens and the car is in any gear and it moves it will automatically go to park
...after the recall fix was made. I believe that this video was made prior to that.
I don't have a problem with this shifter either. Do people just think they can throw it in gear without actually LOOKING down to confirm what gear they're in?! Pretty simple, PAY ATTENTION when shifting like you're SUPPOSED to. .
I love the shifter. Haven’t had any issue with it. I guess I’m above the cut.
Have never had an issue with this shifter. I actually like the way it works. If you don't use your electronic device and your shifter at the same time I'm sure you would find this isn't much of an issue.
problem is you cant reverse with the door open to check for clearance.. a real pain in the arse.
I could see that being a pain as I can't count how many times I've cracked the door when backing up to a trailer or in a very in a very sticky situation like having a fence or stump inches off the bumper...
That's stupid and dangerous . Why would they design this
They fixed it now it goes into park when you open the door
That's not a fix, that's yet another annoyance. There are plenty of times when you need to move a vehicle with the door open. I did yesterday.
in the 2017 jeep grand Cherokee, they are changing it back to the regular shifter so we all won't get killed, thank god!!!!
+CJ Washington they're so considerate.
+CJ Washington They're always looking out for us.
+Peter von Panda did they send out recalls for the 300 because my mom has the same gear shifter.
CJ Washington ...I have a 2015 and never had a problem with the shifter and my wife and I are still alive .
I have a 2016 and my shifter is out. It has been on back order for almost a month. There are 355 shifters on back order as well. Jeep is doing nothing about it. This should be a recall. There needs to be a class action suit against them for intentional negligence.
So this sounds like someone who doesn’t pay attention to the dash.
I love mine
the shifter looks stunning...u only need to look carefully to make sure u r in the position u want, then u always ok...i own my 2015 grand cherokee attitude, i always make 100 percent sure that i am in the right position, thats it...
i noticed it has paddle shifters on the back of the steering wheel.. what are those used for?
To shift the transmission while holding the steering wheel.
I kind of like the shifter
This man said user selector for sport😵
oh tge one I drove did tge same I liked it
In my mom's Jeep Wrangler, if I leave it in neutral and open the door, it puts the vehicle in park and screams at me that it's in "AutoPark mode"
Opening the door should always put the car in park.
They solved already
Yup it is dangerous as fuck 😂
Not everyone is at the same intelligence level
Honestly it’s unnecessary I prefer the push button shifters more than this
P R N D S is for sport S is for sport
Steptronic*
Its a v8 or v6
V8
Junk. Give me an old school column shifter any day
I have had ZERO issues.
If you don’t know how used this type of car why the FUCK !! You buy them.
Hey
I guess people don’t like paying attention
Exactly
Bring this shifter back please!!!!!!!!
How about bringing back Anton Yelchin instead?
I think I will hate it... but I don't know yet. We'll see when I get into one.
I always put it on P when I want to reverse 🤦🏾♂️ . This shifter is very dangerous, and you can mess up the transmission easily like that.
I have no problem with the shifter! I think it's cool looking and I appreciate the uniqueness.... lllllll
V6 or v8
V8
Peter von Panda Does the v6 come with the sport mode?
@@chapo6566 Yes
You wouldn’t know what gear your in? Then you shouldn’t be driving if you can’t realize if you’re going forward or in reverse. This shifter feels great to me
Sounds like you need to trade down to a prius.
Prius has a similar shifter
So pretty much what your implying is that mr. Anton just diddnt want to pay attention and wants to blame others for his actions....
Seriously now we're making videos about a shifter how it should be improved ? BMW comes with a shifter like that and I don't hear anyone complaining hmmm. It's totally easy to handle and safe . If you can't figure it out don't even get behind the steering wheel please .
Marcus Hoehmann the one on Bmw is the same but not confusing as this one
The one on the BMW is very well designed. It’s basically just a joystick. This one is over engineered and cheaply made.
If your to lazy to check your shifter then maybe you shouldn’t be driving
i like jeep cherokee
That shifter looks like shit
Yes i think you are right lets because of that sell your car to me
The shifter is great to use! It’s not idiot proof. Use your parking break always, like I do.
Hey, my shifter is great! Just have to know how to use it!
literally the shifter isnt even that bad yeah it has a unique design. But I've never had a shifter problem or issue you really just have to pay attention. The gear you put it in literally lights up on the shifter and better yet it tells you on the Dashboard. Now if you still are unable to work with the shifter then you just dont buy the car simple. It's called using common sense
Use your parking break
I agree totally sucks! I have all of the same problems total POS!
CAR MANUFACTURES NEED TO STICK TO MECAHNICAL SHIFTERS, END OF STORY.
+lllllll+
I think that this is a waste of time if you don't like the shifter why did you buy the truck. I've never had a problem, learn your truck I get it into any gear first time no problem. It's supposed to look luxury. All foreign cars use this type shifter they never had a problem. Don't like it? Don't buy it.
Ever since #Fiat took #ControllingInterest, they seem to have gotten #OverlyComplicated
So the thing is if you don’t pay attention and is a bad driver you’ll have problem. Simple as this.
First of all the shifter is fine....you need to pay more attention to what you're doing before you drive. Doesn't matter what kind of shifter you have.
Second...Your driveway or where ever you shot the video is "NOT FLAT" and the Jeep proved it. Thats why it didn't move in reverse, and instead moved forward in Neutral....yeah buddy is sloped forward towards the grass!!!!
somone died because of this right
Yep
Howard Hughes the 2nd can't get anything past you - sharp
You have to be really stupid as a person for not knowing how to change gears. I'm in love . and elegant and sporty at the same time.
Yes it is dangerous! But only to those who fall under darwins theory of survival of the fittest. Those who can't figure this shifter out, will be missed but life evolves. It has got to be embarrassing being run over by your own car because of stupidity.
There is absolutely 100% nothing wrong with this shifter. I have a 2015 Jeep grand Cherokee altitude that I put over 40,000 miles on it not one time have I ever had a solitary single issue with it. Quit making something bigger than it really is!
If you don’t know how used this type of car why the FUCK !! You buy them.
