- Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin was killed this weekend when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee-a vehicle among a recall of more than 1.1 million cars for a rollaway problem linked to the gear shifter-reportedly rolled down his driveway and crushed him. As investigators work to determine if the shifter contributed to the incident, I found a Jeep with one to examine the issue.

I was a valet attendant for a couple years, I remember parking a car that had this in the front of the hotel, and running off to do the next task, when I come back my coworker was rushing to find the keys, unlock it and keep it from rolling back into the doors of the hotel because I had accidentally left it in reverse. He was successful, no one was hurt. Out of the thousands of cars I drove, that was the only one that I had that happen with.
Push to start cars will not turn off if it's not in park and on cars with keyed ignition you cant remove the key if it's not turned off so u a fibber.
What kind of car can be locked from outside while it's still running and in reverse?

If the car needs to display verbal instructions in the dash display on how to shift into drive or park, maybe the design of the shifter is a bit flawed?

@@damionbates5463 cars should be inherently easy and safe to drive, not requiring extra knowledge and special instructions to perform basic functions. If they simply made the shifter so it gave you some actual haptic feedback (like 99 percent of other cars) this wouldn’t be an issue since you would know by the feel of the shifter that you are not in park. Also, like others have said, this issue could have also been fixed entirely through the software, but Chrysler is too lazy and profit oriented to care about little things like this.

@@hmbpnz or, like I said, instead of relying purely on visual observation, you had some sort of physical mechanical feedback to help you ensure what gear you're in? Like any other car has? My 2021 kia soul has a shifter that is impossible to mess up becuase I can physically feel when it is shifted all the way forward in park. This shit ain't rocket science. It just needs to be naturally intuitive and not rely purely on digital movement and visual feedback.

just remembered anton yelchin, found this video. i don't know if this is/was a common design choice, but I cannot understand who thought making the shifter behave like an arcade joystick was a good idea. like holy shit i never understood how someone could run themselves over with their own car when I first heard the news, but this makes total sense.
Same. Watching first Star Trek movie as I type. Really dumb design. Too easy to make a mistake. All this technology just for bells and whistle gimmicks and nothing to prevent user error and save lives.

Exactly. I'm all up for new technology, but this here is pretty stupid. Mind you, I like my manual transmissions, but what was the purpose of having something like this anyways? What benefit does it bring? To me, it's something that could break and would cost a small fortune to be fixed.
Kind of a side note, but this seems as useful as a CVT transmission. Worst thing ever.

It doesn't function the same, and it is a dumb design. Other cars that use self-centering shifters automatically go into park when you open the door, because that's the sensible thing to do. FCA, however, is not sensible.
I think the only unnecessary component there is the stick design. If it was a button like the ones which adjust the mirrors and was placed near the wheel it wouldn't be a problem. The car does tell you if it's in Park or not, also beeps to really let you know on the dashboard that it's not in park. The design is different, radical even, but certainly not negligent.

I have this shifter in my vehicle and the absolute best way you can use this shifter with minimal error is by utilizing it slowly, by moving the shifter slowly, you can actually feel how many times the shifter clicks and also look at the dash or top of the shifter to verify your in the correct gear, long story short, slow operation is the best bet

Manufacturers have to take responsibility for shifters and parking brakes that are shit on a stick. I drive rental cars quite often and I'm amazed by how many stupid design decisions go into gear shifters and parking brakes, and their combination, across a range of manufacturers.
the only rental cars I have driven all had regular 5 or 6 speed gearboxes and a conventional handbrake. The only thing you have to look out for is where reverse is. no wait, I had one with an electronic parking brake . . . did it's job but it's not as satisfying as a good old hand brake with it's reassuring sound as you pull it.
I wish I'd get cars with regular parking brakes these days (hand or foot brake I don't care) but 4 out of 5 times I get some BS electronic parking brake that takes it's sweet time to lock and works differently depending if you want to go forward or reverse afterwards. And they often "upgrade" me to automatic gearbox even though I specifically ask for manual every time. Meh.
namefinder who are "they". Company car? lease? Luckily all our company cars have regular manual gear boxes and hand brakes. (Mazda 3's and 6's) Some things don't need to change if they work in the first place.

in our BMW X3 we have a shifter that's very similar to that one in the Grand Cherokee, but it is much safer then the one from Jeep. If you leave the car in Drive, Reverse or Neutral and you open the door, it automatically shifts into park.
Most likely in a mass production situation this would be about a 40 dollar part that would have saved lives and millions in injuries and damage
@@jokarpinski22 that's not even a part. It's pure software. The car already knows when the door is open. You just need to give that info to the gear shifter.
This was the fix they pushed out for it, a software update to add an auto-park function

Actually I can see very easily how Park could be missed, especially on a bright sunny day. That design is so bad, it’s asking for trouble.

finally a video with someone who has some common sense. it's not a shifter problem it's a people not paying attention enough attention problem. I've moved and parked thousands of these vehicles and not once have I had one roll back on me.....EVER

Autopilot for example. People using them on country roads where you already have a hard time seeing nonexistant lane markings

I as a mechanic for many years who has been forced to repair design problems can say that engineers are not immune to that problem either.

They should be able to put their hand down without looking and be able to know what gear/mode they're in. Exactly, if you have to LOOK at your shifter all the time, there's a problem. Purchasers of this car should have been instructed and properly taught the importance of paying attention to this and the same jack-o engineer that designed this should have designed the Park brake to automatically deploy in these situations.
Very unfortunate Jeep didn't have that updated. All models now automatically engage the parking brake if it's still in gear and you step out.
This video particularly highlights the problem as the PRND indicator were usually washed out by the glare.
This is exactly how I thought it worked. It would help to have a louder chime, though. I have a different brand of car with joystick style selector and have accidentally misused it once or twice. The screen displays a flashing yellow caution triangle, dire text (makes me scared I just f'd up the transmission) and very loud distinct alert chime.
FCA's RUclips video says you have to hold the shifter in park for a second or so before park engages. Is this true?

How do we prevent vehicle rollovers or vehicle rollaways and getting hit by a 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee with an automatic shifter from happening?
My older Cherokee of the same body style was recalled twice because the shifter locked up in Park. It eventually took Jeep about 5 tries to repair it.
Anything but park will not allow ignition to be cut. I do alignments and it's super annoying to have to leave these running to keep them in neutral. That being said as sad as it is it was the driver error and not the car design that led to his death...you have to ignore a lot to get out of that thing without it being in park. And if you're parking on an incline where a vehicle can roll the parking brake should be set as well.

Exactly. But thats the problem with alot of Americans these days. Something bad happens that is actually the fault of the person, find something else to blame it on. There are alot of Americans that have lost sight of personal responsibility. California and states like it, with their nanny state laws are partially to blame.
Park is a seperate button ontop of the shifter for BMW's though
There appear to be a lot more fail safes in the BMW/Audi/Merdedes systems, with the car automatically going into park whenever it assumes the person is getting out (even if the car isn't shut off).
In the case of Anton Yelchin, his likely routine is to pull into the driveway, park the car, get out, get the mail, return to the car, and then put the car in the garage. What happened during the "park" step is that he put it into neutral instead, got out (assuming it was parked), and due to the fact that he has habitually done this 100s of times, didn't actually check to see it was parked and ignored the chimes because they sound exactly the same as the "seatbelt not on" or "engine still running" chime.
If he were in a BMW or Audi, the car would have automatically parked itself as soon as he opened the door and he would still be alive today.
I would venture to guess that a lot of people have these same habits, meaning you go on autopilot and make lots of assumptions. It's not a good or bad thing to have these habits, but the designers of systems like these need to take into account more scenarios for the purpose of safety. I would prefer that car manufacturers err on the side of safety.
My girlfriends 3 series is similar, in that the shifter is always in the same place. On more than a few occasions she forgot to put the car in park. If you're sitting with the car in drive and your seatbelt off, when you open the door it automatically goes into park. Seems like a simple fix.
I have a 2009 Ford Mondeo and a 1995 Land Rover Discovery and they both have automatic transmissions, but they both also have a separate parking brake as well as a park position on the gear selector.

That is very confusing and complicated. I have a manual shift car and it's very easy to leave it in neutral when you park and get out of it. I did that once and it rolled down the driveway. I tried to stop it and my hand got caught and pinned in the door almost killing me.
When they got recalled did they getting fitted with a manual? Would of stopped loads of problems!
Was this shifter reprogrammed by the dealer per the recall? That is what I thought this was about. I have one of these and it took local FCA seven hours the reprogram it.
Or you know, go back to the old style mechanical shifter. I preferred those anyway. Give me a column shifter over this thing anyday
This and those stupid "dial" type shifter controls I do not like. It looks like most new cars have them however. I do not like how the driver is slowly being disconnected from the vehicle. Eventually just becoming a passenger with the upcoming autonomous cars.

The fly by wire on my prius always makes me double check every time I shift gears...there’s no feedback.

It's curious, that every other electronic shifter has a park button whereas ultimately the FCA and Audi A8 shifters didn't. Though I think they had different software in the Audi where it was more intuitive or that it automatically went into park when the car turned off/door opened. Aside; the FCA shifter felt really cheap
What happens is people push the lever forward without pushing the button. It won't go into park with the button not being pressed. But it will shift out of drive.
I have this same spring shifter on my 2014 JGC.. It's a very short throw..and I really like how fast it shifts! It's one of the features that sold me on the car!
you dont count how many notches you shift...lol wtf? Once you've had the vehicle for more than an hour it's really easy to get used to..and fast ! you quickly slam it all the way up for park.... slam all the way down for drive. It's the easiest and smoothest shifter I've ever had! How hard can it be?
i can shift a 93 jeep cherokee trany shifter just as fast and its not gonna roll any where .this is crap and people that think its cool should be SHAMED .

My JGC 2014 gives me the error message "Service shifter " and gear doesn't change. I'll hit on the shifter like many times and sometimes it comes to life. Sometimes it doesn't. So bad. Jeep quoted me a hefty price for shifter replacement.
The problem is that Opening the drivers door should automatically put the transmission into park. (For a car wash you would then need to manually place the car into Neutral with the door open.) Also to properly get into Park you must push the shifter forward and hold it there momentarily for the electrical switching into Park to happen. The change in gear should be instant upon pushing the shift selector forward. Problem solved.
I really like this shifter. I've enjoyed it in my 15 WK2, but I do agree the parking brake should have been electronic for added safety
Most older cars With electronic parking brakes still needed to be engaged manually.. Ive now seen new cars now starting to have them being set on Automatically

I just don't understand what the benefit is of having the shifter return to the center position no matter what gear its in. The track for the shifter still has to be long enough for the full travel and is apparently confusing for some people. Makes no sense to me.
I was messing with my girlfriend's jeep cherokee (2015), not grand cherokee and i put the car in neutral turned off the ignition and tried rolling it. Upon doing so the car automatically engaged the electronic parking break which was pretty cool!

The expensive cars like Rolls Royce has this but it's on the colum and it just pivots and goes back to the "N" position BUT when you go to park it, there is a button on the end of the gear shift you press and it is the park.
No problem with my shifter, I just watch what I'm doing when shifting......works perfectly 2015 Grand cherokee 107,000 miles and no problems.

Unfortunately car makers have to appeal to the lowest common denominator. just looking at how that shifter works I can see all sorts of problems that can arise. I understand it's all computerized but how hard is it to have the shifter, which had been almost the same for over 50 years by the way, stay in the position of the indicated gear?
Legitimate question; in the US is it not common practice to use the handbrake when parking an automatic? I've seen a lot of videos where people just leave it in park and that's it. In Australia, almost everyone uses the handbrake as well putting it in park. Just wondering.
Most Americans will just leave their car in park, without using the handbrake. Most will argue that it's not necessary, since the vehicle rests on the parking gear, which means the car isn't going anywhere (while true, I still apply the handbrake, as that's what it was intended for). Usually the only people here in America that use their handbrake are people who drive manual (even then, some people will skip the handbrake and leave the car in gear) or a select group of people who drive an automatic and apply the handbrake.
Ah okay. Yeah if I'm on a completely flat surface I won't always use it, but even if there's a slight angle I'll use it. I don't feel entirely comfortable resting it on the parking pawl.

This heap of junk accelerates so fast you can't shift 'up' with puny human arms, only 'down'. Well, in F1 that's why you shift down pushing forward and up backwards. In this junk heap......Poor design.

I'm sorry if I hurt any feelings but I've worked valet for over a year now at a hospital that takes in 300 plus cars through the main entrance alone every day. I see these in Jeep and Chrysler cars, with BMW and Maserati being some of the manufactures doing a similar design. My point is, its not new and a lot of cars have this now. If you take the time to look at either the instrument cluster or gear shifter to properly see its in park you will never make that error. Really, the best design is with Fords button gear select. Its fool proof. This is not the companies fault for someone being in a rush and just hoping its in park and leaving. Yes its not the best design but again its not faulty. You just have to slow down a bit and take your time, which some people have a problem with. I've seen people leave a regular shifting car in neutral with no parking brake. Thankfully the driveway up to the hospital is flat. Some people get out their car leaving it in drive. Thankfully I have a sense to catch them because if I didn't care I'd let them role. Its your vehicle, take charge to learn its ins and outs. Switch on a parking break also if your that unsure.

I own a 2015 GC and Im so surprise that people are having trouble and running over someone. I prefer this shifter than the new ones 17 models. Dont know how people leave the gear to neutral and just go but it should indicate on screen that your gear is in neutral.
I'm all for advancing technology and making new and easier ways to do things, but I don't really see the point of redesigning the shifter. It might save a little space, but it adds complexity and requires the average buyer to "retrain" how they've driven cars for years. Not everyone is a car enthusiast and cares about all the minute details and just want a car that works and behaves like the one they had before.
My only real complain about the way this particular shifter is designed is that there doesn't seem to be as much physical feel between going from D to P or D to R or D to N if you're trying to do it quickly. A quick shove of the shifter appears to just break past the stopping points for R and N so it's feasible that someone would never feel it if they're going quickly.
Not an issue about re-training. It's an issue about objective simplicity and functionality
here is a tip from a BMW technician (who deals with ZF trans in nearly its whole line up) : turn off the vehicle. the transmission should be programed to communicate with the DME & know when the vehicle has turned off, engaging its parking pawl. if thats not how jeeps version of their ZF units works, they should really consider programing the TCM to do so.

At no time did you mention the park brake (hand brake in the UK). Do your vehicles still have them or are they redundant now? In the UK you are trained to set the hand brake BEFORE you select Park.

My Father's BMW 535 has the same kind of shifter, a joystick type thing that springs to center no matter the gear. I've always hated it.

Does this car have a parking brake? If so uhh i dont know maybe you should use it to not get run over by your car.
I have a 2014 Dodge Charger with the same transmission. While the majority of the time it performs as it should, every once in a while it will not go in to park or it hits reverse or neutral. It's a great transmission with a crappy shifter.
Okay, I do see a little bit of a flaw with the design of the shifter, but where I think the real problem lies is the warning beep. My car will wake up the neighbors if you open the door and leave the headlights on! I would expect the same kind of beeping if you accidentally leave a 5,000 pound car in gear!!!

There are some things regarding the car's features and design that should never be left to manufacturer's choice. Too much creative freedom where safety comes second.
I have had this exact same 2014 model for 7 years now and have never had any problem with putting the vehicle in Park, but like many here in the comments have said you can’t fix stupid. The sad thing is that all the design safeguards that the car manufacturers have had to install for these stupid people has caused the price of vehicles to goes up to an almost prohibitive cost, SAD !
I think that’s also why they have a dial instead of gear shifter in the new Grand Cherokee models.

Solution: Use the parking brake each time you leave the vehicle.
Alternative solution: a traditional shifter which you can be certain what gear it is in even with your eyes closed.
That's a dumb shifter. They put the indicator right in the crease of your hand and thumb. If you grab that normally, you can barely see it.
your thumb goes over the button that has to be pressed to move the shifter which leaves an open space so you can see the P R N D. the shifter should've been clunkier if anything. it actually looks pretty nice though
You dumb if you cant read the dash that tells you what gear you have selected. The light on the selector was probably put there for morons such as yourself.

You are right. You would think someone would have though that people might have different finger sizes and hands so putting something like that between thumb and finger is stupid. On top of that there is no force feedback. I use to know my bmw was in park by feeling the feedback from gears shifting and knowing the position for park was all the way at the top. It was something that was intuitive and didn't require thought or glancing at the shifter or display. Studies show people make hundreds of decisions in a split second while driving.

Keep making excuses for stupid people. The recall wasnt due to bad design, it was because of stupid people that cant or wont read the dash display
As far as an electric, self-centering gear selector is concerned, Mercedes-Benz was early to the game with the feature that the car will automatically shift into park if it's turned off while in gear. I feel that this should at least be a default feature of electric shift selectors, with the option to disable it in case of repair work or emergency
you ment NEUTRAL.. if it was in gear it wouldnt move at all, the gears get locked and might get stuck
I think the accident was caused because he didn't press the button in the shifter when going to park, if you push the shifter foward without pressing the button the vehicle will go into neutral, but if you push it with the button pressed the vehicle will go either into park or reverse.

While I appreciate the necessity to always know what my car is doing, how much thrust is being applied, etc.- I drove a stick for 10 years and loved that car- but CVT is just a relaxing breath of fresh air. Unless it's a sports car, no thanks.

why don't they use red light instead as the indicator? the white light is just like it's not lit up during daytime!!
This is why it's good to always use the hand brake, even when it feels unnecessary and stupid. Automatic parking brakes are great for people who don't bother learning how their car works. Autonomous driving will be even better.

Very poor design. However, it is great practice to always set the E-brake if the vehicle is equipped with one if you are on an incline. Idk if this model had one or not, just passing along a good safety tip that my dad taught me!
