- Learning how to use paddle shifters in your car can seem scary along with trying to figure out how to use manual mode in an automatic car. The good news is that it's actually super simple and there are only a few steps you need to follow to use paddle shifters in your car/truck/SUV. In my case, I am demonstrating how to use paddle shifters in my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT.
Make sure that when using your paddle shifters you remember to focus on your RPMs until you get used to the feeling and sound of when you should shift!
Step 1: Get used to driving your automatic car in whichever mode you prefer and take note of what RPM your vehicle shifts at.
Step 2: Engage your manual mode by pressing the right paddle (upshift).
Step 3: Drive until your car reaches the natural shift point (or go further for a pull - but be careful of the redline).
Step 4: Have fun!

I did what you said and “didn’t worry about MPH”. Unfortunately the officer pulling me over for 135 in a 35 did not understand how to practice using paddle shifters
😂
😂😂😂
It is a blast to drive with the paddle shifters, almost like a manual without a clutch. 😎😎😎
2nd gear pulls under bridges never get old
Can you drift with it?
@@Jykobe491 Don’t know, haven’t tried. My vehicle is a Jeep grand Cherokee SRT with all wheel drive. Not very good at drifting. 😃😃😃
@@Jykobe491 It's much harder. If your car is a RWD or AWD, it can be easier, but paddle shifters tend to be harder to drift than H-shifters
Gay ass
Love your reassuring tone in teaching. It inspires confidence rather than fear or apprehension.
9 months later and it’s still helpin people. Thank you am bro🤝🏽
"It's not gonna let you break the transmission...that bad."💀😂

wym, using the shift pedals damages your transmission ? vs automatic.. ? -rookie (reply with knowledge please)
@@TheCameraRsalso need to know
That is what car manufactures what you to do.
@@TheCameraRsno it’s not going to damage unless you are using the shifters incorrectly
Thanks for the vid, I''ve got an advantage, I learned on a standard, you are correct, it's the rpm's...after awhile, people will get the feel from the car, that will tell when to go up or down.
Yeah its good to learn with rpm but after a while you just shift based off sound
Great video. I've had paddle shifters for a while, and I always wonder if I'm actually doing it right.
Same 🤣
Damn that’s crazy you’re literally the only person who’s made one of these videos who actually shows you how lol
And always remember to keep your eyes on the road, so you can see that ZL1 blow by you LMAO
Lol 470hp compare to 580-650hp ZL1? I hope so😂😂

Our new car has a paddle shift I have never used it or likely to. At my age my idea of having a good time is getting out of bed in time to go to the toilet before it is too late.🤣
😂😂😂
Cant wait to try this on my not clapped car
Fellow Rhode Islander here, wassup bro ✊🏾
I've never thought about trying this on mine 😅. I just might. It looks easy especially because i learned how to drive on a stick shift. Nice tutorial.
I figured most of these things out on my own just by playing around with my paddle shifters so I was really just watching this video to get an idea of why my car would need them and I still don't get it... I have a Acura MDX...a mom car bro💀. Paddle shifters are definitely mostly meant for sports cars. I think it takes a full 5.5 seconds to go from 0 to 60 without using the shifters... they make a difference but I'm pretty sure I'm not getting the full experience lol. Great feature to have and imma use it anyways it's just hilariously unnecessary in a car like mine.
My Camry xse has this 💀
My mini cooper has these too💀😂
Bro it is a lot slower than 5.5 seconds lmao 5.5 is pretty fast
An MDX is gonna take a lot longer than 5.5 to reach 60mph, unless it was tuned and modified and is no longer a mom car
@@InstantClanGamingUr right. I never looked or tried😂. Apparently it’s 6-7s
Glad I saw this. The truth is, there is alot of police where I live. So. I really don't need or even want paddle shifters
Love the video you explain everything so well! Love the details!
Appreciate you! Hopefully it helps some people
thank you for this video. Btw, how do you attach your go pro?
OK ima be completely real here don't judge me.......I learned how to shift with a clutch in fh5, same with paddles. And my first time ever in a real car was an Audi RS 6 Avant and it easier then it looks. Loads of fun. But almost did go off the road. No one was hurt cars fine but do need a bit more practice. love the video keep on the great work
Picked up my Dodge Durango hellcat a few weeks back and they have paddle shifters. My last three cars had them and I’ve never use them but I’m tempted to try now. I was just always afraid of breaking something.
Why a Durango? It just seems like a contradiction. “I want a powerful and performance car. Let me get a massive heavy SUV.”
@@lordbluebaron2270 maybe the guy has a family and wants to have some fun driving too?
I don’t think there’s no contradiction here buddy. Sure, the Durango may be a bigger and a heavier vehicle then the rest of the Dodge lineup but it still performs right? As long as the Durango Hellcat does what it needs to do as advertised despite its size, then I don’t understand why in this sense a contradiction would be appropriate to make.
bro same
I’ve always driven manual cars but earlier this year I bought a DSG MK6 GTI as a second car and it’s fun and easy to use the paddles that’s the only way I drive it lol
So when I downshift should I be downshifting at the same times the car does when it’s in automatic? Should I memorize at what speed and rpm the car downshifts? When I downshift it’s klunky and I don’t want to break my car😅
Yes to the first question, the cpu determines the optimal time to shift the smoothest in automatic mode. As for the second question you should focus mainly on rpms as that’s what the cpu uses to determine whether or not the transmission needs to shift or not.
I drive a 2015 Durango Citadel and I use paddle shifter once in a while. Really like a car with Manual transmission. If you are new to it and accidentallty push that shifter, it would initially take you to the 1st gear. Make sure you really know how to use it especially when there is heavy traffic coz it will inially slows the car.
Nah this is the best tutorial out there hands down! 👍🏼
I learned 3 on the tree. TBH, I don't understand the whys of paddle shifters and have never used them. Thought I might give it a try with my new cx90 in sport mode.
When I exiting the highway, I always manually downshift making my rpm go high so I can imagine I’m an entering the turn at racetrack. 😂
bro finna help us break our transmissions 🤣🤣
Never thought a "how to use paddles" kind of video would ever be made or needed, but hey guess some people need to learn? Side note never have I ever heard someone ask if they need to release the gas when paddle shifting, times have changed I guess cool of you to teach those who need it. We share the road with everyone I guess...
Side note no way dude called a focus RS clapped??
Thank u no cap u helped
Appreciate you!
So for normal driving like cruising you would recommend shifting between 2k and 3k rpms ?
so when i downshift is the car suppsoed to jerk forward or am i fuckign something up
Wow as a new driver this was so helpful 😣😣💪👍🏾👍🏾
I noticed you were in RI, you were getting close to the Johnston police station then you turned around. Always get on my hellcat when I make the turn from Greenville Ave, to Atwood Ave
Hey there, great video! I wonder how to use paddle shifter when you corner a sharp turn?
You wanna downshift into 2rd or 3rd gear before you get to the turn then upshift when you come out
You are so sweet for making this video.
Question- if you are on ice are you supposed to use the paddles? If so, how? I have a 2024 Grand Cherokee L. The paddle thing is new to me. We have a lot of snow and ice and a steep drive. I need to know the best way to get up and down the drive and what to do if you slip on ice.
Maaaaan, I swear using it feels so damn sketchy bro. Buuut imma do my best to learn it the right way.
Hi I have a question Can you drive it on automatic 🤔🧐👀🤷🏽♂️
THANK YOU MEN this help me alot
Found out that the paddles make the car fully manual when is sports gear, makes me want to trade in for a manual. 😂
Wait what 👀
paddles is not close to “Fully manual” theres no clutch to lush in and the you have to let go of gas when up shifting. paddles is training wheels
Damn bro a 45min avg video for "experts" crammed in 5min.....Big dubs mane
in an auto when i down shift do you let off the gas or could i keep my foot on the gas when i’m trying to rip it
I wish I had this video about a month ago when I had a Durango for a rental😩😩
Now how do i slow the car? Do i juust brake normally without changing the gear?
Can you show us how to shift and the pedals
“What is this a clapped car meet over here 😂”
What's the best way to quickly come to a stop from 60 to 70 mph respectively, using the paddle shifter?
Thanks for the tutorial
You are looking like the bowler mitchell santner❤❤❤
No one wants to talk about the speed limit sign that says 27. 1:58
You don’t have those??
@@BJPLIFESTYLE Nope either 25 or 30
@@BJPLIFESTYLE no lol. where i live its multiples of 5 and a speed limit 30 sign really means 35 and yk u can go 5 over so reeaaaally 30mph zones r 40s
we cant be trusted with exact numbers like 27, cuz then wed say its a 30 which means we can go 35
If I switch from manual mode to automatic mode while driving, can it damage my transmission?
No
Didn't see the most important thing: how does the car start? When you are on M and released the foot from the brake does it start moving or do you need to press the right paddle shift?
It's still an automatic transmission so all the same rules apply - you're just manually changing the gear
@@BJPLIFESTYLE Thank you kındly. So there are no cars that require pushing the paddle in order to move?
@@TheKarīMiscbro have you seen a car

@@TheKarīMiscONLY FORMULA ONE CARS
So you have to let go of the gas to shift up or you can just hold down the gas pedal and also gear up?
you can hold the pedal down
Don't let off gas
No, the clutch is still automatic and should handle revmatching and properly disengaging/engaging gears. ergo, you can shift when you want to but the car won't let you shift up or down if you're out of range of whatever gear you're trying to go to.
In my charger you dont even need to be in the manual mode to engage the paddles shifters. If you just need a burst of speed to get on a highway or interstate or to pass some one, I can just down shift via the paddles, then I can either hold one of the paddles to reingage automatic shifting or the car will put it back into auto after sustaining a gear for 5-10 seconds.
Focus RS drives by “oh there was def clapped car meet near by”😭
When down shifting do I need to let go of the gas peddle and/or press the brake or do I keep my foot on the gas peddle?
Say clapped cars one more time I dare u
Do u have to let off the gas when u shift
THAT'S WHAT I WANNA KNOW
When do I change to the next gear on the RBM ?
for anyone who wants an easy cheap mod, get a wolfbox digital rearview
why
So do I need to put in 1 on every stop?
You can be around 1-2-3 depending on the car
Is it bad if you shift up as soon as u downshifted ?
Yes bro but I’m a car like this it’ll let yk and shift on it’s on if u mess up the car is made to let u not break the trans
if your car has paddle shifters do you need to use them to drive the car
when you downshift do you take your foot off the gas or is your foot always giving gas while shifting up or down?
That’s the baby’s car now. The baby gonna be driving the Sián
first question - If i put it in manual can I paddle shift without letting the car automatically shift if my rpm is high?
second question - can I paddle shift myself when it is in automatic but on custom drive modes it says paddles shifting on?
feel the car and you’ll know when to shift
Trash ah comment

Can you also shift with the gear lever?
Yeah you can, I have an older video showing that as well!
Bro i Dont understand manual mode at all. And it’s frustrating me.
Great video bro.. good for roll race. Lol

What does the term clapped mean lmfao maybe I’m a 27 year old boomer but never heard that one before. Otherwise thank you for the help in the video 😁
Clapped just means ugly

question! how do you put back on automatic mode?
put stick to the right

Are we going to ignore that speed limit sign that says "27 mph?" Not 25. Not 30. 27.
You don’t have those where you are?
@@BJPLIFESTYLE No, lol. All of the speed limits posted around here are divisible by 5.
first time i used paddle shifters was on a ferrari 812 superfast
u press the right to up shift left to downshift
Down shift I thought it means to reduce speed but the car sped up !!
I'm so confused he said down shift when going to a red light which was green😂
was it light or line?
But how I get to Nutrul do I just go all the way down
I don’t even watch the rpm l just go on sound most of the times
When downshifting to stop, do you typically downshift at 1500 rpm until you come to a stop? Have never drove a manual before, and would kind of prefer to learn the RPM for shifting up/down before getting into a stick.
Around 15-1900 for downshift. 2700 for an upshift. After some time youll just kinda feel the engine and know when to shift
@@salar7902 I need this comment pinned
@@salar7902how do you when to shift, if I want higher power do shift high or low
@@d-abyz8565Just like a clutch manual, dump that fucker 😂. You can always downshift to get higher rpms if you are about to race.
@@d-abyz8565shift down for higher power and acceleration
Levers shift when your car travels in step roads
Definitely useful on steep hills!
What if your in high speed and have to press brake,do you have to down shift as fast to gear 1?????😢
Some vehicles like Mercedes downshifts automatically for you in instances like that but if your vehicle doesn’t luckily since it isnt a FULL manual transmission your car wont stall so you can practice downshifting yourself when you hit near 2k-1.5k rpms until you come to the complete stop which then you can go back to upshifting 2-3k
However dont shift fast to 1st gear since youll basically be redlining your car until full stop…and it also doesnt feel great lol
No you can just brake and it will automatically go back down to first gear
Little red line for a good time 👌🏻👌🏻
I’m so bad at downshifting my q50😭
OH that’s what those are for… I always accidentally click them and I’m like WTF is going on 😅 I pull over then turn the car off then back on
W vid.
Appreciate you!
I’ve been driving manual since high school I’m not an old man or anything but all the vehicles I’ve had just happened to be manual I just got into a Nissan maxima and it has paddle shifters this video was pretty intuitive but I def had to make sure I wasn’t going to blow the transmission on this mf🤣🤣😭
I installed some paddle shifters on my dodge challenger, But it still doesn't work, I still gotta press the clutch in and shift the gears with the stick. Can you make a more detailed video please
Huh
Im pretty sure this video only helps people who have an automatic car with paddle shifters and not with a manual car.
@Meh well that sucks 😕
I mean what did you think was going to happen. It isn’t shift-by-wire. Your stick is directly connected to the transmission
Even if your challenger had the 8 speed auto, you'd still have to use obdalpha and flash the ecu, use an obd tazer or something similar, or take into the dealership to flash the ecu for you, all so you can actually enable the paddle shifters.
When I DS to first my car jolts everytime Is that okay lol
Not break your transmission that bad....yeah okay....( settings turn paddle shifters off)😂
The paddles won’t let you break it
The paddles won’t let you destroy it
How does this work if I wanna just downshift to the lowest possible gear at my speed then just floor it. Will it up shift for me? Getting a q60 so don’t know if it’s different than an srt
I just don’t know how to down shift to slow down😭
It should downshift by it self if not just hold the left shifter down
3:40...what's a clapped car?

I have paddle shifters in my car, but I don’t understand what’s the point.
For fun
My Volvo doesn't have paddle shifters, it's got the manual shift mode with the actual gear shifter instead, lol.
This seems like a pretty useless feature. Now, if you can tell me it would help get me unstuck from a snow bank to use the paddle shifters, that would be useful. Can it? I have only ever driven a manual and I have been able to drive in all weather conditions with few problems for decades. Now that it is almost impossible to get a new vehicle with a manual transmission I am dreading the time I have to purchase another vehicle.
yes it can. Most automatics have "snow mode" in which the vehicle starts in 2nd gear automatically rather than 1st to provide more torque. You can do this manually
Toyota still makes decent manuals, like the GR86
What's car is this?

I have a 10 speed , do I have to shift 10 times lol
If that's your highest gear then you can if you're on the highway or whatever at higher speeds
