Is the 2021 Nissan GT-R Still a Budget Super Car?

- Is the 2021 Nissan GT-R still relevant in a market full of double-clutch transmissions and turbochargers? Does it still wow us the way it used to? Zack went to Colorado to find out.
This 2021 Nissan GT-R Premium still has the same foundation as the first one: a 3.8- liter V6 packing twin turbos anda 6-speed dual clutch sending power to all four wheels. The body is a mix of aluminum, steel, and carbon. For 2021, Nissan got rid of some trim levels, added a color, and changed a few other things but fundamentally it's the same car. A ground-up refresh would be nice but Nissan isn't exactly flush with cash these days.

What do you think of the Nissan GT-R?
Badly needs an update for the money. I see no reason to get this over a 911.
Still love it!!!! Still a monster and legend...wish they would update it w a new model...I have heard Nissan might make something to replace it...
@@adamb3129 Back seats??
@@chrisgeorge84 Both have back seats
Good stuff when it was the new kid on the block. Sadly, at the current price tag it either needs to either have better interior/performance (i.e update that old 6 speed dual clutch). That being said, as Zack said, at 110k or so, I don't think many car could handle being modified like an R35, with the exception of the C8 Vette, but that doesn't have AWD.
If you pull up to a 2008 as opposed to a new one, you will know instantly because it'll have a body kit, a wrap, and the distinct smell of corn.
LOL
@@abaialsa712 The fuck is this comment? Idek what that was supposed to mean...
@@joeleonard9965 All the kids getting the old one because its cheap and they always modify it. And the smell of corn is from e85 tune and a lack of CAT(s)

WTF who told y’all to update the production value… nice visuals, editing and sound… keep it up good video
Looks about the same.
Savage geese making a difference in the automotive RUclips world.
visuals were kind of muted in the in-car footage.
@@LogicalQ Those guys are just nerds playing around with expensive equipment because it's fun.
It feels so run-of-the-mill car reviewer now though.
Still looks modern to me, hell even the R34 still looks pretty modern to me.
We live in a throw away culture unfortunately
It's most impressive that 14 years later with almost no changes it's still as good of a performer as it is. When you build something so good to start with what's the logic in building something different? it's hard to replace it when it's still punching above it's weight over a decade later.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
The problem is people that are used to new cars releasing every 2-3 years get spoiled and then say that stuff like this gets _outdated._ It still works and that's what matters.
I know the infotainment in this car is already 4 years old but as long as it has USB/AUX for music, forget everything else. :)
No changes? There's a ton of smaller changes, which have all added up.
@@Orcawhale1 He said almost...
@@aaryeshg.6526 i think the main problem is that most people are tired of looking at the same car for 14 years. it’s probably older than some kids watching this video rn. it needs a new look
Has it really been that long!? GT-R aged well
Bayside blue also looks amazing. - ZK
Me and my kids are big into the drag racing scene, particularly the no prep "street" type events (but not on the street, at the drage strip). Events like TX2K and FL2K. The GTR is a legend in these circles and you see them in every single flavor possible.
Almost every time we're at one of those events, my kids ask me "if you could have any supercar, what would it be?" My answer is always the GTR, not because it's the best, but because I could take them with me.
People are spending 100k just on a M4 ... Gtr looks like a bargain now
And it's shocking to say, but Nissan looks better than beemer.
The AWD M4 actually has similar performance figures, weighs the same, but offers more practicality, much better fuel economy, and far better interior and tech.
The new M4 shows how much Nissan has sat still since launching this car.
@@The_Stanman yeah, but M4 is very ugly. And it known for it's absence of steering feel. Funny how Japanese supercar is more "analogue" than BMW's latest-greatest "ultimate driving machine".
I'll take a GT4 or even a poor man's GT4 (Supra) over an overweight GTR any day of the week. That car is just too heavy and you feel it too much.
@@vvevvevvvv the GTR looks better than the M4 on the outside, agreed... but the inside of the GTR is a disaster. The disparity between the exterior looks of the M4 pales in comparison to how cheap and dated the interior is on that GTR. Obviously some people are willing to live with horrible interior for the sake of being biased towards the GTR and having an AWD turbo 6 from Japan, and I totally understand that, but for me and many others I would never in a million years pay that kind of money for a car with an interior that looks like that. 35-40k sportscars have superior interiors to that GTR- its WAY overpriced for that interior quality, materials, and tech.
Imagine if Porsche was still making 997.1's and keeping a straight face trying to sell them to us.
And that is why modern equivalent Porsches will outperform the GTR, when they couldn't do it back when it was released.
They're not, but both 991 and 991.2 are not that much faster than a 997.1
I mean it took Porsche nearly 10 years of 911 improvements to start beating the GT-R and only with it's GT and Turbo entries, Nissan is only
doing yearly tweaks on a shoe-string budget by comparison. It goes to show exactly how capable the GT-R was and still is.
I'd say Nissan earned the right to sell the GT-R with a strait face for as long as they have, especially when there isn't a direct competitor
in the 110-120K range. Although selling the Nismo at the price its at now is pretty laughable.
It's pathetic.
@@BigHeadClan That's not true.
The 997 GT2 RS beat the GT-R in 2010.
I'm a time traveller from 800 years in the future. The first batch of R36 press cars have just begun to make their way into the hands of reviewers and Nissan VIP clients.
I remember hearing when the GTR came with 20" wheels from the factory. That was huge back in the day for a Japanese car! Now a Civic Type-R has factory 20" wheels.
To be fair, i think the wheels are too big for the new Civic. Er, needs bigger sidewall tires anyway
+1 most cars will do perfectly fine with 18s, I'll take the extra side wall for the better ride and less broken wheels and damaged tires.
It's crazy, the Camry comes with 19" from the factory these days.
@@matth6284 So I have a 2012 accord as my daily with 16s and my parents have a 2017 accord with the 19" sport tires. They have managed to get flats on potholes that were just never an issue for me on the same roads. I don't understand why low profile tires are necessary for a mid-trim economy sedan.
It’s completely absurd that manufacturers are going so silly on low profile these days. My first mod these days is generally smaller diameter rims and I usually wouldn’t consider buying a car where the brake size doesn’t allow me to do that.
I remember going from 18s to 19s on an old car and it was a nightmare. That car ended up on light weight 17s and it was fantastic.
When you said the base price went up 14 grand in the last 14 years, you meant 40 grand right? Because it used to be a $70k car now it starts at $110K
$70k in 2007, is $92k in 2021 money. So adjusting for inflation, a 14 grand difference is pretty close to correct.
My first memory with the GTR was during my internship at a Dutch car magazine in 2011. That was after the first facelift. I was given the privilege to return the GTR to Nissan Netherlands. Mind you; I just turned 20 then, so 550hp was quite a bit... When they gave me the keys the told me: "Be careful. Don't be "that" intern, ok?"
I did two regular launches from a stop light, but nothing crazy, as I was terrified of breaking or crashing a +120k € vehicle.
However, after I returned the vehicle and got back to the office, my manager told me that Nissan Netherlands immediately put the car on a scanner and found multiple error codes and overheating history. Turns out they had to replace the complete ECU afterwards to be able to fix it. And they were pretty mad.
So I was immediately suspect, as I was the inexperienced kid who drove it last. Luckily for me, I had an older colleage with me during the return and he could testify that we did not do anything out of the ordinairy.
Later that afternoon another colleage, who actually had the car for testing that week, mentioned that he put it on a dyno session to see if the car really put out 550 hp or not. Unfortunately the dyno session was during a severe heatwave and the car put on a shitload of warning lights afterwards. After a couple restarts they managed to reset those lights and they never thought anything of it, until Nissan Netherlands went to read the log of the vehicle...
Still; special place in my heart that car. Fastest accelerating vehicle I've driven to date.
Good story I’m sure you were pretty scared when they thought it was you
@@Mayor-McCheese Yes definitely. But also my immediate thought was; 'But I didn't do anything wrong!' So, that strong feeling of injusticeness... Because they second-doubted me too, like "listen, don't worry, you can be straight-up. Just tell us if anything happened"
In the end it tought me to be confident against your superiors. No matter what their position is.
Glad you found one of the good local roads, gotta love Colorado
the fact that your actually comparing a 2008 chassis to a new BMW comp is testament in it self... ive never liked the style personally... but that it even holds up is just mind blowing to me :)
To be fair man modern bmws suck balls.... The last real bmw was the E46 M3 and the brand died after the 1M.........so I don't know if that was a good comparison......
I tend to look at the GTR now not as a budget alternative to a 911 turbo but as the platform to build a durable 1200hp car for a 1/10th what it would in a Porsche. It’s a thrill seeker platform.
I believe there not even in the same class...
at this point everybody buying a GTR has 1000+ horsepower plans. Way less money than an equally powerful R8 TT or Huracan TT.
@@mr_zeus6148 they used to be. The GTR sought out the 911 turbo on purpose, hence the Nurburgring spat they had back in 2007

The R35 was so far ahead of everyone else when it came out. It represents everything I can't stand about modern cars but you can't deny this car was a leader in the industry.

Great review. I have had 2 R35s now. Current one is a 2017 track edition with upgraded GT3 turbos and carbon ceramics (800HP). The back skips out in turns and is an absolute adrenaline rush. Still attracts a lot of attention.

Anyone who wanted this car already bought it. And anyone who's still saving up for this car is just going to get an older used one for cheaper. No idea what the point is in making a 2021 version
Someone in the premier chat bought a new Nismo this year BUT they said they got it at Premium prices.
Because they make money selling them

Thanks TST, definitely one of the most sensible reviews of the GT-R on YT - no OTT opinions😊 but considered evaluations. Thanks.
Z putting in work on a well produced video! Nice addition to the One/Two takes!
the car was $75k when it came out; inflation adjusted, that would put it at ~$99k today.
however, as said in the video it is now $114k which is a decent bump in price for a 14 yr old vehicle. Sure, it's had revisions and upgrades to try to modernize, but yeah overall I'm not sure it's very compelling.
Yeah, I respect the heritage but this car has never done it for me. At 115k it's Cayman GT4 money, 3 pedal nirvana
GT4 over that any day of the week

IREMEMBER my mom got a brochure and invitation to buy one and it started at 69k, 69K!!!
At 85K its a great car... but for $100k+ now... not so good...
Even at $85k the C8 Corvette is a much better sports car. This thing should be $60k tops.
@@IndependenceCityMotoring a new bmw m340 is 60k.. why the fuck would a gtr be 60k. It’s old, but it still keeps up with competition. Maybe 90k is a good starting, and 100k fully optioned.

Even at $130k in the Canadian market, there isn't really a lot else in the same price bracket that will do the same things. You could get a Porsche 911 Carrera 4, RS6 Avant, or M5 Comp for about the same money, but those are all lower performance vehicles in comparison.
@@lappu911 the major option is the paint colour on this particular trim level of the gtr. A lot of little comfort things come standard on these which is not surprising for a Japanese car lol.
That intro. Mr. Klapman is taking over!
maybe its just me, but i would love if you would keep it more "one take" with the view of the road ahead and the driver in splitscreen. as a viewer i think that you then get a better impression of how the car behaves on the road. still, best car content on youtube :)
Really nice video Zack, more content like this please. Nissan seem to like to drag there sports car out, but they’re releasing an updated z car. So maybe an r36 is on the horizon, I’m sure they’ve probably almost done it a few times at nissan but it’s always difficult to get such a program signed off by the pennie counters. Looking forward to seeing nissan blow everyone out of the water with another curve ball, I’m routing for them.
Thanks for the Genuine Review, hope to drive one soon in Africa. God bless
This thing will always be awesome but new and used prices are just ridiculous now
Great video bud. I think a lot of the GTR draw is immediate power of a tune and sky's the limit from there. It's a rare man that keeps them stock.
Love you Zack
Hi mom!
As always Zach, succinct, well spoken, well thought out.
I keep saying it but I've been preferring you over Farah and to think I used to skip any videos you did in the beginning.
I feel a Zach binge watch coming on.
I like him too! Matt brings a different flavor but Zach’s improved greatly over the years!
Learned quite a bit! Nice video. I was confused by the multiple comparisons to McLaren and Ferrari. You mentioned the Corvette once but that would seem to be a more appropriate comparison point, not cars costing 3-5 times more than the GTR.
I agree with you. It's the best bargain supercar in my opinion. According to Nissan, this thing can lap the Nürburgring in around 7:16 seconds. So it's still 1 second faster than the current 911 Turbo S (7:17.3). I don't care about the acceleration, which is Tubo S was born to do (because who gonna drive always straight for rest of his life?). So for $112K this is the best performance car that money can buy.
Man Nissan Making the same model for a long time is a good thing. More parts available for "the people" is the way I look at it. Interior and comfort is what it is.... I'll be a future purchaser because of the bang for your buck performance.
Had a chance to drive this and a Ferrari F430 at Gingerman in 2012. This was way more fun. Feels like a late 90s Maxima on the inside, but was just more fun to drive.
Dude that center console and 'infotainment' screen.... wtf? I literally had to go back to the beginning of the video to double check if this is the current 2021 model or the old model.
Excellent explanation on transmissions down-shifts with some competitors synchronizing to land on a certain RPM (PDK)... vs. how the GTR over-revs slightly & isn't as crisp in transition...That said, the GTR is aged but whatever the muscle car, exotic or hot SUV you might be in...if a GTR pulls up beside you... you have a serious fight on your hands...Its still a Rocket...
It was stunning then, still great now but in desperate need of an upgrade and no way worth the asking price in 2021
No way would I buy one new today, but on the used market it could be a great buy.
Unfortunately today, the used market is insane for these. 2017's are asking 105-110K. Used 19-20's are even being listed over MSRP with a few thousand miles. If you have to have a GT-R that's 2017+, it almost makes sense to buy a new one, assuming you can get it at MSRP.
Ohhh Colorful Colorado… good to see some green in the background😅
If I had excessive money this would be my ultimate winter daily. Raise it up a touch with 4 dedicated winters ftw ❄️ ⛄️
After all this time it’s still beautiful. This car changed the game when it comes to performance for sports cars. It may have not dominated the racing like the R32 BUT I would argue that number chasing game (0-60mph & ESPECIALLY on the Nurburgring) that manufactures have been doing for the last 10+ years is because of how ahead of it’s time this car was in comparison to other sports cars in 2007/2008. In that regard the R35 carries the torch & legacy of the infamous R32.
PS: I paused at 0:47 to write this soooooooo if Zach mentions any of this in the video my bad ahead of time 😂. I’ll be sure to do an “edit” if need be lol
I wouldn't say that...... The lap records were already a thing, this just helped propagate it........ This car has already aged terribly.... It's one of the most digital sports car of our time... A SNES controller had more tactile feedback then the r35....... This thing is only good for drag racing applications.... Which helps it's current popularity...... But as a driver's car, forget about it...... this will never be a r32, or at least a r34.....
@@MiguelGarcia-vj7oo I never said it was a drivers car. Wouldn’t be foolish enough to make that ridiculous statement. What I’m speaking on is the technology behind the speed & the price point in which you could get that performance back in 2007/2008. The car is dated in more way than one TODAY. But back then, it was a game changer in the sports car world, in more ways than one. It was faster than anything else (not just in a straight line), & cheaper than anything else. The biggest game changer was its transaxle dct awd system. I understand manufacturers had been testing & setting lap times & going for records prior to the R35. But the public interest as well as manufacturers interest especially for marketing purposes skyrocketed after the R35 came around. We have been in a sort of speed war ever since lol.
So yup definitely not a drivers car. Anything that doesn’t have 3 pedals & a manual gearbox, in my opinion, is out of & doesn’t even belong in the “drivers car” conversation. In that regard, all previous GTRs are more of a drivers car than the R35.
Oldie but goodie
Love Zack
one advantage of sharing parts is things just work...and in ten years, will not be expensive to replace.
how funny! there ya are, in Colorado Springs. I thought it looked familiar...
It's interesting that Nissan introduces some improvements to the GT-R, each year.
So do many manufacturers of many cars, including the 911 and the Corvette. The difference is after 6-8 years, most manufacturers move to an entirely new model. I’m not a GT-R hater though, I’d happily drive one. Wouldn’t be my choice to buy new though.
Am I the only one thinking about the personality of Hedwig in the movie "Split" when he says Etcetera?
I feel like Nissan is just so busy making boring cars that they don't even care about making a new GT-R. They will keep making these for as long as they can. And people are still buying them just because its predecessor was an unobtainable icon.
Nissan isn't far off bankruptcy. Doesn't give them much wiggle room to develop new flagship. The 400z is taking up everything they've got.
Are people still buying them? I never see them around anymore.
Nissan is on the edge of bankruptcy lol they can't afford to make another GTR for a while.
Got to drive one of these on the track and yea, they're fast, but that's not what I found most amazing about it...the grip, man. The grip. ESPECIALLY on corner exit. Corner exit is RIDICULOUS in these things! I just kept going harder and harder and HARDER, flooring it sooner and sooner, and it just WORKED! It was NUTS!!
Set the track record for the day, too...and l beat a Huracan. 😆
Some old "tuned" style videos? Im fuckin down for that.
What I'm getting from this is that the car could be "fixed" by having a new transmission.
Love the car, that exhaust one of my favorite but it's a nissan.
The service department worthy of you? especially with a 6 figure car?

I appreciate Zac’s candidness.
Price aside, the cars that get developed year by year for more than a decade are usually the best value
What sports cars are coming with 23’s? Damn
Godzilla is a fantastic car, but there’s one other option you didn’t mention, the RS3 (especially the new one about to launch). An equally robust AWD platform that can be upgraded into the 8s in the quarter mile, and with the right setup can handle pretty well. Granted, not as good as the GTR, but the latest RS3 about to come out looks very much like it will given the Ring time it posted! Plus you can get an RS3 fully spec’d with carbon ceramic brakes for under 100k. 😁

why are gt500s not in the comparative discussion? the germans you mentioned aren’t awd
I wonder which would be better, the 2021 C8 or this? I guess it would depend on what your needs are at the end of the day but damn, really similar.
I currently have a 2023 c8 and I’m ready to trade it for a 2021+ GTR, I bought my new but the GTR is my dream car!
Anybody know what timepiece Zack is wearing?
I think that when the GT-R came out 15 years ago, it was already so good that it's hard to see how to improve it, but Nissan was able to make slight changes year after year to the point where I think there's nothing else to really change at this point. In my opinion, the GT-R is the best that it can be, and it's still a really good performer today. The fact that it is as good as it is shows just how ahead of its time it was. I think the reason behind the laggy transmission in automatic is because this transmission was designed like that on purpose. It was meant to be used for racing purposes to be as smooth as can be and not really for driving slowly. I'd gladly buy an R35 GT-R today, but it's discontinued, so now I'm sad :(
i think the gtr is still a cool car but i think it would feel much more modern if it has a zf transmission or possibly a duel clutch. i love my zf and it would be great in this car
What about comparing it to the 2019 C7 ZR1 fully loaded. That comes to about $120.
That's what I was thinking. Even the C7 Z06 or a new GT500. Those are both better options in my opinion.
the streaks on the window are really bothering me lmao
Still a very capable car that does not fail to impress.
I still love the GT-R after all these years. It is time for it to go though. Let the 400Z be the top performer for a bit. and come back swinging for the next one in some amount of years.

I think for what they charge for these it's too much.. I've seen them over 100k and used 8n the 90s,.. really I think maybe 60k for a good used one would be worth it.. they've proved fast.. 👌
2:43 that’s a weird sounding blow off valve
The r35 came out before my 08 hr... yeesh. Still sexy doe.
and the klapman claps back once again, love the one takes zack
When GT-R launched in US, price was in the $70k range. It was cheaper than the cheapest 911, which had only just started offering the PDK in 2009, despite running with the turbo that realistically stickered on lots at twice the price or more. An astounding performance bargain. The interior, lack of refinement, etc., were not THAT bad comparatively back then, and, again, relative price was amazing. I wanted one and would have bought one had I been in a position to do so back then.
Now, price has gone up far quicker than inflation, but the same dated interior, lack of refinement, etc., are all still there. As much as I love the soul and character of this car, the rapid price hikes without addressing its very real weaknesses took it off my list as anything to consider buying. If this was still, say, $90k with a bit less performance but an interior and ride refinement at least comparable to previous generation 911, different story.
I'd still have one
We are at quite an interesting place when the R35 GT-R has good steering feel...
