    What they should have done is to only allow contactless for cards that you specify. A simple way to do this would be to ask passengers to tap a designated contactless on the oyster reader at the ticket machine. This could made the bank card "activated" to take payments so that in the future, no other card in your wallet is active. Not sure about the complexity of this but its an idea...

    • @ostkkfmhtsh012345678
      @ostkkfmhtsh012345678 7 лет назад +3

      This idea other transport agencies should take note of. Also this idea can allow passholders to able to tap their wallet with their Oyster card inside without having to worry that the reader can read instead their debit or credit card. I should also add fingerprint biometric contactless cards should also be permitted to be tapped directly ONLY when fingerprint is read and verified (e.g. ruclips.net/video/ONmb161SZzo/видео.html ) to indicate the card the user selected and has authenticated the card. So reader should be programmed to reject debit and credit cards unless it has been either activated at a ticket machine or fingerprint is read and verified.

    This reminds me of the Chicago CTA, where Ventra Cards (equivalent to the oyster card) and contactless work at the same speed. However, it is impossible to be charged a double fare unless using a street level transfer. This is because the Chicago CTA does not scan the card to exit the system. And i can confirm that the Ventra Card used in chicago uses the same system as normal cards. Other than the card number of the venture card will start with a 6. Also, the first card detected is the payment card in Chicago.

If it's fully within the ticket barriers, you just tap out at the end of your journey, but if there are 2 physically separate stations (or in some cases different platforms behind separate gatelines, or separate oyster validators) you touch out, and touch back in, and touch out at your final destination

    If Vancouver, Canada does implement a system like London's (Vancouver system is called Compass and basically uses the same technology as Oyster and the same contractor Cubic Transportation Systems), here is my thought to not have this card clash issue. If users want to pay their fares using debit or credit, it can only be tapped using an NFC-enabled device (i.e. smartphone, tablet (e.g. Google Nexus 7), smartwatch, etc.) with an official e-ticketing app installed and configured to allow user to pay Compass rates and issued an e-transfer. Only Compass cards (including tags, fobs, and virtual cards) and mobile can be tapped directly on the readers.

    • @buizelproductions-movedtob7799
      @buizelproductions-movedtob7799 7 лет назад

      I think they should add support for both NFC and contactless if they add it. I would love to use Samsung Pay or Apple Pay to pay for my transit fare.

    • @ostkkfmhtsh012345678
      @ostkkfmhtsh012345678 7 лет назад

      Buizel Productions While I agree both contactless cards and NFC devices should be supported, my proposal in order to prevent card clash is only Compass and mobile can be tapped directly on validators and fare gates. All other users using other forms of payments including cash, credit and debit cards (with or without contactless capabilities), must purchase a single journey ticket instead. Since there's a possibility in the future the bus fare boxes will be replaced, included with the new fare boxes could be Chip-and-PIN with contactless POS terminals (the ones that you typically see at places such as London Drugs when making a payment at a cashier).

    • @buizelproductions-movedtob7799
      @buizelproductions-movedtob7799 7 лет назад +1

      ostkkfmhtsh012345678 Yeah sorry I thought you meant contactless card only...
      I dont think they would at those, but at least have the fareboxes dispense compass tickets...
      IDEA: BRT System
      Bus lanes separated from the road by a concrete median. Dedicated station with faregates and ticket machines before you enter the bus. Other places are doing it and I think TransLink should.
      Although then, I am anti-LRT.

    • @ostkkfmhtsh012345678
      @ostkkfmhtsh012345678 7 лет назад

      Same here. I'm also anti-LRT. Good ideas for BRT. Although the fare gates would not be cost effective as long there aren't any platform edge doors/gates (it doesn't have to be the typical horizontal doors/gates but it can be the vertical versions like these: ruclips.net/video/1sGtbRSCLQQ/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/JQdSCQsCVi4/видео.html, ruclips.net/video/Ny63tk33kxk/видео.html, and ruclips.net/video/JdqXlu8SWxM/видео.html) at all BRT stations and there are crosswalks impeding busway. Without platform doors/gates, since the platforms can still be accessible without passing through fare gates via crosswalks at bus crossings (if present), the fare gates would be rendered ineffective for reducing fare evasion and crime.
      Regarding fareboxes and Compass tickets, I think in the interim, CVMs, faregates, and validators should have a magnetic ticket validator unit installed instead of new fareboxes to dispense Compass tickets. CVMs should also be fitted with an additional shelf for Concession Compass cards and a slot for QR code (the square matrix code typically found on advertisements along with some apps such as WeChat Pay, Alipay, and LINE) and PDF417 barcode (the rectangular matrix barcode that you typically find on airline paper tickets) paper coupons, slips, and transfers and full-featured Compass cards (when accessing additional on-screen options including direct refund for anonymous cards only). However new fareboxes will still be needed but should not dispense Compass tickets nor magnetic tickets. Instead should dispense QR code and PDF 417 barcode tickets and full-featured Compass cards (Obtaining a Compass card on a bus from a future farebox should look something like this: ruclips.net/video/HGutnlFicbk/видео.html). As I have said above in my first reply, alongside with purchasing new fareboxes should also be new credit and debit card payment terminals so credit/debit cardholders with or without contactless capabilities (there are cards without contactless capabilities including China UnionPay cards without QuickPass and there are even UnionPay international cards without any form of chip issued, only magnetic strip (www.bankofchina.com/th/en/pbservice/pb4/201210/W020120531342559145730.jpg)) and certain banks without contactless debit cards (no Interac Flash, etc.)) can still pay their bus fare. The magnetic ticket unit for faregates and validators would not just read and encode data on the magnetic strip but also print relevant validated information on the ticket include matrix/bar codes. The unit should also have a built in PDF 417 barcode and QR code scanner so in the future, magnetic tickets don't have to be issued and validated anymore.
      Disposable Compass tickets should not be issued anymore in the long term as they are not recyclable nor reusable (bit.ly/1J1NXVC). Instead, in the long term, contactless IC tokens (Taipei Metro - www.travel.taipei/Content/images/static/travel-tips/metro2.gif, Delhi Metro - images.delcampe.com/img_large/auction/000/249/049/730_001.jpg, rapidKL - jaintravelog.files.wordpress.com/2015/01/exit-token2.jpg) should be issued for single journey ticket holders travelling on #SkyTrain and/or #SeaBus . Passengers transferring to modes other than #SkyTrain or #SeaBus , prior to inserting token at exit should obtain a paper transfer. Passengers transferring to #SkyTrain and/or #SeaBus can get a token with their valid transfer at a ticket vending machine. IC Tokens and future new Compass cards should use FeliCa IC chips with maximum data transfer rate (current maximum transfer rate is 424 kbps: www.sony.net/Products/felica/about/scheme.html) and 0.1 s (not 1/3 s) estimated data transfer time capabilities so passenger movement through gates are smooth, efficient, and consistent.
      Future new Compass fare gates during contract with Cubic should be this (Universal Gate 2100: www.cubic.com/Portals/0/Publications/Gate_Universal.pdf) with customization including additional light beam sensors, an exit slot for the tokens, and the whole contactless IC reader+writer pad lit like Japanese fare gates (ruclips.net/video/rpdR8_k8FnE/видео.html). If contract with Cubic expires and not renewed, new Compass fare gates should be the sliding door variant (Could possibly be from Thales: www.thalesgroup.com/sites/default/files/asset/document/transcity_collect_pg400.pdf e.g. ruclips.net/video/k73IVJ1Ld-0/видео.html) with customization including token exit slot, additional light sensors, and whole IC sensor pad lit like Japanese fare gates. All future new Compass fare gate contactless reader+writer units should also have Sony FeliCa (i.e. NFC Type F) supported in addition to NFC Type A and B (i.e. ISO/IEC 14443 Type A and B) for backwards compatibility.

      Japan manages to get most major transport smart cards to be intercompatible. Rail services in Tokyo issue suica cards, and the Tokyo metro issue pasmo cards. In Osaka they have Icoca, and other cities have other cards, but the amazing thing is that they are all intercompatible (some smaller ones are not). You do not need a credit card to steal an identity and you can't steal an identity from just a credit card. All it takes is a phone call and they will often call you first, and you get a new number in a few days. Identify theft is a big deal but isn't related to stolen card numbers.

      Liability doesn't matter when you do not have the funds available for the months it takes you to sort it out with the banks. You don't eat for months, but don't worry, you aren't liable so you'll eventually get your money back after you have starved to death. Oh such a comfort.

    • @cbernier3

      Ewan Marshall It doesn't take months, it's pretty fast. Also, they can only steal the money in your account. They don't steal all your future paychecks. Your bank is likely to detect the fraud right away before they even get to larger purchuses. Anyways you will have your new paycheck in a week or two, plus your credit cards, so yes, you can eat. Plus, if you have any significant amount of money, most of it should be in separate bank accounts anyways.
