WKRP was among my favorite shows growing up. Jan had a remarkable likeness to my mother who passed away when I was 2. Episodes featuring Bailey where somewhat of a comfort to me. It was like having a little my mom. I know it sounds crazy. It weird what you hang onto and what gets you through grief when you’re a kid.
Whenever I saw Jan my heart skipped a beat. Although Loni was lovable as well she never evoked that response from me. I think Jan brought on my puberty many years ahead of schedule.
I am so glad I got to meet Jan Smithers at an autograph session in Sept 2016. Now those kind of events may not be possible or desirable for years to come. She was very pleasant to talk to, as you would expect.
I was a Junior in high school when she was on the cover of Newsweek. I was smitten. Years later when she was on WKRP I was again smitten by the young woman who played BQ. It was many years before I discovered that the two were the same girl.
While almost every other male on the planet was drooling over Loni Anderson, I was appreciating Jan's (librarian) (in her role) type beauty. Its amazing how many guys miss beauty sometimes, like Umma Thurman in Robin Hood, with her peasant dress code and downplayed beauty, I loved watching her in that.
Jan Smithers (Bailey Quarters) is one of the most beautiful females I have ever seen! Loni Anderson was good looking but Jan Smithers was sooo much better looking!!!!!!!
Jan Smithers was the girl next door (I wish)...and had natural beauty while Loni Anderson had a prepared - two-hour makeup kind of look. Not taking anything away from Loni, who played her part well, but I, too, was drawn to Jan Smithers more than I was to Loni.
Like Mary Ann (RIP Dawn) v Ginger, in my heart, Bailey (Jan) wins hands down. Loni and Tina were intended to be the sex-symbols, but Dawn and Jan smoked them, and they were the girls you could take home to meet Mom...
I have to disagree re Jennifer. I think she was more than just a sex object. There were instances where she used her brain power to solve problems at the station. She was often emotionally nurturing toward those who needed it. It’s true the way her face and hair were made up looked fake. I think many people back in those days just thought that was the way a receptionist was supposed to look. It’s also true that she rejected Herb’s advances, but I think not because she was trying to be snotty, but just because his advances were kind of crude and uninvited, and she didn’t feel she should put up with that.
The research and production on this channel is nothing short of incredible. As for WKRP it was the catalyst that started me on a broadcasting career that lasted over 30 years during which time I got to meet thousands of interesting people from Nelson Mandela to Neil Armstrong, but alas not one single cast member of WKRP :(
She looked fantastic in blue jeans , it seem she only wore them in a few episodes. She was very beautiful and seemed a down to earth person a wonderful combination !
@@MICKSS350 My comment was joking at the pocket comment. Been a long time since I heard that. Sort of like she was a Fox. Kids today have no idea what I'm talking about as my father used other words for women. It's all generational
Loni Anderson is more often recognized as "the hot one" from WKRP. But I prefer Jan Smithers: she has this very sweet down-to-earth persona and she's also very lovely.
You’re really hitting hard with all my boyhood crushes. Bailey , Mary Ann, Debralee, and Col. Klink’s secretary 🤤. Never went for the Ginger types. And Yvette from McHale’s Navy, oui oui. Love the French accent 😎
Was Yvette not on a British comedy set in France in w2 with Renny the bar owner and various German officers and troops Allo Allo . It was super funny and the hoaky accents made it better
I'm watching these videos and old movies, only to find out how old they are, or that they passed and how old I am. Waiting my turn on the diving board.
It seemed in that era the " hot blonde" was played up instead of the brunettes: Farrah Fawcett/Cheryl Ladd on Charlie's Angels( instead of Kate Jackson or Jaclyn Smith), Suzanne Somers on 3's Company( instead of Joyce DeWitt)...the brunettes on those shows were sexier/ more beautiful than the blonde, Jan Smithers fits here too.... James Brolin leaving her for that harpy Striesand?!...his loss
They were both Hot! I have the series and I grew up when this low budget sit com appeared. Loni Anderson was headlines...she brought a lot of views! A true blonde bombshell..but she was very intelligent and more and more sincere as the series progressed. Bailey was a wonderfully shy girl next door. I loved the skin tight fashions of those days! Bailey had the tightest pants ever....as did Travis. Herb was the funniest dressed person..when leisure suits and abstract prints were in. The clothing and fashion was wonderful. Wish they would have dubbed in real rock n roll music in the show. But it was always just noise. Dr.Johnny Fever was a pothead with out saying he was a pothead. He was the most featured actor.....and funniest! A well put together series. Nobody really seemed like actors...all quite believable as is! Les Nesman was...Les Nesman. Funny and always wearing a band aid. And his dotted lines around his office was just pure Genius! Especially when Mr.Carlson klicked his heels..making the sound of knocking on his private office door.
For what it's worth: you may have seen a version of the series heavily edited for sindication, because the series always used real songs, as a Top 40 Rock & Roll radio station might do, which bit them in the backside when trying to sindicate it or get it on DVD. Back in 2014, Shout Factory managed to secure the rights to about 80% of the music for a complete series DVD release, so the scenes without original music are few and far between.
I remember, in the 80s I think, a show called "Franks Place". It was a great show with very good acting. Not popular with critics but had a strong following. Did it ever make it to DVD? Or has it been lost forever? I think it was a CBS property.
1 wonder if Jan SMITHERS AKA Bailey Quarters was SEPARATED AT BIRTH from Marcia STRASSMAN who PLAYED JULIE KOTTER on Welcome Back KOTTER? Separated At Birth was a Book published by SPY Magazine.....
In case you were wondering. While studying art at Taft High School, Smithers swerved her automobile to avoid hitting another driver and ran into a telephone pole. The accident left a permanent scar on her chin.
A few years ago, I traveled into Cincinnati. More or less that was not the target of my vacation but as a matter of passing and checking it out. I could not find one single thing that referred to the show, there was no WKRP on the radio, nor any mention of the show what so ever. Very disappointed, that as full of hills and valleys and lots of what looked like drug addicts hanging out along the road and trash blowing. I can't say I found much I enjoyed about the city there, as a matter of fact, couldn't wait to get back on the highway and get out of there. Shame too because I loved that show, looks like they could have done some kind of salute to the city, after all they did with "The Red Sox" on the stadium. Sorry if I offended anybody, I am sure you love your city and all. I was just sorely disappointed.
I always thought Bailey Quarters was much more gorgeous than Loni...of course I also liked Samantha more so than Jeannie... (Samantha-Bewitched) (Jeannie-I dream of Jeannie)
There was a rumour, many years ago, though based on this segment seemingly inaccurate, that she disappeared from sight and had purchased and lived on some property in Nova Scotia.
I have the whole Series on DVD,and I live for Bailey scenes! Loved her as a kid and love her even more now!
Jan was more beautiful then Loni ever was.
She was more wholesome imho. Naturally beautiful.
Amen
She was a natural.
Totally right..she was gorgeous
I loved the Bailey Quarter's character. Wish Jan Smithers had more acting opportunities. She was truly beautiful as well!
I completely agree 😁

No comparison, Loni couldn't hold a candle to Jan.
I came here to make the same comment and yours is the first one I saw.
@@chrisb9960 Minds of similar good taste!
Me also, to make that comment. Jan though was always overshadowed by Loni, and was the other woman of WKRP.
Bailey was the Mary Anne of WKRP, the girl you would really want to be with!😻
Excellent comparison!
A very loving soul inside AND out- also a devotee of Amma
I am so glad I got to meet Jan Smithers at an autograph session in Sept 2016. Now those kind of events may not be possible or desirable for years to come. She was very pleasant to talk to, as you would expect.
Jan Smithers is still gorgeous from what I can see.
my high school locker had 2 pictures in it.....Jan Smithers & Barbi Benton
Excellent!
Barbi was so hot too. Wow.

How Jan was discovered is a miracle. A photographer seeing her on the back of a motorcycle.
An absolute miracle.
I still have a thing for Bailey.
One of the best looking women to grace our television screens, and she's still looking great.
While almost every other male on the planet was drooling over Loni Anderson, I was appreciating Jan's (librarian) (in her role) type beauty.

Jan is SMOKIN and way better looking than Loni...
Bailey was my absolute favorite. . . One of my first celebrity crushes. I never drooled over Loni, because I was too busy drooling over Jan.
I also liked Jan. Jan though was always overshadowed by Loni, and was the other woman of WKRP.
Umma is a hit or miss. Sometimes she's really cute and other times not so much. Kill Bill was a movie where she just didn't do it.
No....she was that deal!!!!
Loni who?? I was a "Jan Fan" growing up!!! As the "Russian guy" said in a WKRP episode, when looking at "Bailey" "American Beauty"

Bestill my heart. Jan/Bailey is a beautiful woman and graduated from The Ohio State University for which I live a few miles away.
She was my celebrity crush back then along with Dawn Wells. Oh and Anne Lockhart. Hubba hubba.
I loved that show!
👍 she had my heart when I was a younger lad
MaryAnn v. Ginger. Jan Smithers v. Loni Anderson. The "girl next door" always wins.
As a footnote, that motorcycle was a Honda 305, best Bike Honda ever made!
Sexy actress on a super bike, priceless!
When I watched WKRP I always hoped to see Bailey wearing jeans, "nice pockets!"

Bailey's shy, innocence made her every single bit as ultra sexy, maybe more than Loni Anderson.
You can keep Lonnie, This girl was the beautiful one.
