മനുഷ്യന്‍ പ്രപഞ്ചപ്രതിഭാസങ്ങളെ കണ്ട് അത്ഭുതപ്പെടുകയും അതിന്റെ രഹസ്യം അറിയാന്‍ ശ്രമിയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്ത കാലം മുതല്‍.. ഇത് ഏത് വര്‍ഷം ആരംഭിച്ചു എന്ന് പറയാനാവില്ല.
മനുഷ്യന്‍ കാലാകാലമായി അന്വേഷിച്ചുകണ്ടെത്തിയത് പിന്നീട് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തി തുടങ്ങി. അതിനാല്‍ ചരിത്രപരമായി ചില ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളുടെ രചനാകാലം മാത്രം കണ്ടെത്താം. പക്ഷേ അത് ശാസ്ത്രത്തിന്റെ ഉത്ഭവകാലമല്ല. അതിനാല്‍ തന്നെ ഉപജ്ഞാതാവ് ആരാണെന്ന് കൃത്യമായി തെളിവൊന്നുമില്ല. ചില ഗ്രന്ഥങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട പേരുകള്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധമാണെന്നു മാത്രം.
