- From the BBC's "London on Film" event at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, 11th June 2012. The concert featured the BBC Concert Orchestra playing music from films with some connection to London released over the past 50 years. As the climax to the evening, two songs from Quadrophenia were featured. First, host Mark Kermode did a short interview with Pete Townshend. Next, the orchestra performed Quadrophenia (the song). Finally, the orchestra with Pete Townshend and Jeff Beck played Love Reign O'er Me.

Rest in peace Jeff Beck. Nobody played like you did.
or ever will ... thanks John
Every once in a while we are graced with such a rare and unique talent the likes of Mr. Jeff Beck … its unfathomable to us mere wanna be guitarists! The music world is now waking up to this great, great loss! R.I.P. and THANK YOU for sharing your gift with the world!
A unique and original player with his own inimitable sound.
@Randy A absolutely agree, two more of my all time favorites. Entwistle and Moon.
No one did
There was only Jeff Beck who could make the guitar sing and talk they way he did, you have been such a dominant force in my life for over 50 years and I can never thank you enough....RIP Jeff and may God keep you.
The only time Beck's guitar doesn't sing, is when he makes it cry! Jeff Beck is THE MAN!!!
Pete Townsend and Jeff Beck. Such awesome talent. RIP Jeff Beck.
Jeff really is a one off guitar player . No one can sound like Jeff.
Oh yes he could play anything and got better and better , always improving his art.
Jeff will sorely be missed, but I'm grateful for every note he left for us - what an artist.
Da hast Du voll recht.
Me too...I just saw him in October in Boston

@@richbailey8174 Glad that you've seen Jeff live. Luckley enough, I've caught him 5 times since '89. RIP, Jeff. Add Pete. one more time?!
@@ESmithStringSlinger I have seen him a bunch of times since the BBA days. Not as much lately...when he came to Boston we saw him of course...He is/was my favorite guitarist and one I model after
When Jeff looks over at Pete and smiles, I tear up. RIP, Jeff Beck. I was blessed to see you live a couple of times. You were the best of the best.
Lovely man!❤
This song never gets old. Pete's lasting masterpiece.
He lived an amazing life. Rest in heavens musical peace Jeff Beck. Thank you for sharing your gift with the world. God is building the greatest orchestra in the universe - HE called you home to add to it.
first time I ever saw those two sit down and play
This is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes.
Fantastic. Jeff always made a great guest star. Can't believe he's gone.
Brilliant how they transposed the voice/lyrics into two guitars...without losing a thing! This arrangement and performance really brings forward the genius of Pete Townshend's writing, even more than the original.
@siriusfeline More than the original?? Don't think so. This is a terrific performance, but the song's majestic lyrics and Roger Daltrey's passionate vocal bring forth the song's true brilliance. This song will always be the best in the Who's original recording.
@@robertbykowski1398 I know what you're driving at here, but I was referring to the genius of P.T.'s writing, not the performance aspect of his writing. You're right about the original being the best (ever) performance of this piece as it always will. It would be a sacrilege for me to say otherwise. The orchestra brings forward a fuller dynamic of the writing, in my mind.
It never ceases to amaze me how a few people can be critical in the rare presence of something truly beautiful...this is amazing in every way!!! Thank you so much for sharing this with all of us!! If you can look at this and not be moved, you are lacking a soul...
Right on brother Rob
Hey Rob, the sound is bad. No criticism of the arrangement, playing, song, players, or even some poor wardrobe choices, but really, the sound is bad. Say it isn't. You can't. So it's hard to listen to because the excellence that is there is inaccessible. Is there a cleaner, better mix available of the same performance?
@@wildwildben your fine points are in complete alignment with the spirit of my post. I agree the sound is lacking,...though moreover I was deeply moved as an appreciative and respectful fan of both men. Thank you, be well.
Is that jeff to his left?
@@raymondchollet3199 yes, Sir, it is!
I first saw this video just after it was posted and thought that it was a marvellous interpretation of Love Reign O’er Me. Nearly 10 years on, it remains exceptional. The genius and creativity of both Townshend and Beck shone through in the way that they traded licks, roles, and musical interpretations. I am sorry to hear of Jeff’s passing and regret that I did not appreciate his work more whilst he was still alive and performing.
So many people are now exposed to Jeff's brilliance due to his untimely passing.
I think he was loved more than he knew.
RIP 🙏 Jeff Beck My condolences to the family and all your friends. Jeff Beck did everything his way
RIP Jeff Beck, you legend.
I have been lucky enough to live in Chicago.I have seen Beck every tour since 73,He is and always will be the greatest guitarist alive.
Hi Chi Town Hawks fan. So sad about Jeff's passing. I have been living near him in England for several years, but never saw him. Had a beer with Daltrey last year. (I'm a North Sider myself).
Greatest? Very Subjective, Most Original absolutely. Prefer Clapton and his overall diversity of his of career. Hendrix and Duane also were great, but their early deaths distort their legacy long term
I didn’t think I’d like actual cellos, violins, and a flute performing this with electric guitars over the top. I was mistaken. They sound great in there. I wish the guitars were recorded better. Can anyone argue that this song and performance aren’t incredibly beautiful? Holy smokes.
@@dgoto90 Clapton is great and very influential but in terms of pure originality and uniqueness Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix take the top spots in my books. Both pioneered new ways to play guitar, Clapton is a fairly straight forward blues guitarist (not that that’s a bad thing)
@@youreatoilet Clapton with Cream revolutionized guitar playing which influenced everyone. To put it in proper perspective listen to guitar playing prior to Eric and how it changed after Cream. Eric was far more influential. Jeff was fantastic but since he couldn’t play like Eric he created his own style. It was great but again not to Clapton level Watch Clayton in his late 60’s playing m.ruclips.net/video/vCp4pNf0CGc/видео.html
A man i loved was my first song i heard with him He went home to his maker. Thank you for putting up with my crazy but. Thank you for you making me laugh so hard over Summer. You brought me out of darkness. I miss you. Yes we were friends. Rest Easy. ❤😢
Beck's playing in this gave me physical chills of delight. Townshend's brilliant composition made thrilling and new
Two of my favorite guitarists ever. Jeff, thanks for giving me chills on this one and everything else too.
Rest easy, Jeff Beck.
Jeff Beck is the guitarist's guitarist. Anyone who plays guitar knows what a huge talent Jeff Beck is with a guitar.
This is just part of an incredible catalogue of music written and performed by the Who. Awesome to see Pete and Jeff on stage together...with an orchestra no less!!! Rest in peace Jeff. You had a style that no one has emulated...yet.
pete townshend , from the WHO group if my memory and brain is in good healthy, with JEFF BECK R.I.P , and orchestre symphonic, one dream .. .. two legends guitarplayers in same time respect forever. jackyfan 👍💖french.
Brilliant from Jeff, so humble and talented RIP.
Sublime . RIP Jeff Beck
Pete wrote Quadrophenia when he was 28 years old, a bit ahead of his time with this album.
Used to prefer Who's Next, but Qaudrophenia's double album makes it a bit deeper water to swim in.
Rock Opera, Tommy isn't bad either and was Keith Moon's last recording with the Who. Love you Moonie and Entwistle, rip!
Quad is a masterpiece front to back!
@@kevinomalley558 So is Tommy, but love Quadrophenia, too!
Another phenomenal Who album is the Deluxe, 2 CD re-release of Live at Leeds which added the second half of that concert, a live, seamless and complete live Tommy. Amazing from the entire band!
Pete really tore it up from 5:12 to 5:26 with some great rock licks. He’s a much greater guitarist and musician than he has gotten credit for.
I believe Page picked Townshend as one of his favorite guitarists. Unfortunately, the admiration wasn't mutual. Townshend is very unique, IMHO.
@@TheEleatic Townshend is unique. Correct. Understated, but correct. He is one of Jimmy Page's favourite rock guitarists. Also correct. The feeling was not mutual. Incorrect, from an ability standpoint anyway. Townshend very much admires Page's ability in much the same way he admires Beck's. However, he loathed Led Zeppelin. Interestingly, so does Keith Richards. Also, I think Townshend had something personally against Page which goes back to the early days when Page wanted to form a group after his Yardbirds days were over and he tried to poach Moon and Entwistle from the Who.
every accomplished guitarist knows how great Pete is.....first class maestro
@@davemakarchuk5127 Yes, Jimmy Page tried to poach Keith Moon from the Who in around 1968. I've seen film where Moon is talking and laughing about it and there are others in the room as well, and I've seen a clip where Townshend and Moon are talking. Seems Page was trying to put together his version of Cream or something and he was talking to Moon and Moonie was making a joke about putting he and so and so together and it would go over like a Led Zeppelin. Thus, the name. It's Moon's. As for me I never care for Zep much myself. My reasons don't matter to anyone else but me. Life, the universe and everything.
History is now showing that PT is the real deal 60s/70s artist. He never reached the historians handbook success of the Beatles and stones, but who needs it?
Jeff is and was absolutely unique. Now a legend. RIP.
Both musical legends they do not come any better than these two R.I.P. THE GREAT JEFF BECK the song is a absolute classic from Pete.
Beck has got to be one of Britains greatest treasures , nobody comes near to his genius .
I agree 100%!!!
Totally agree ❗👍
Rest in Peace Jeff... You are truly a master with a guitar.
Beautiful song, amazing guitarists. Will miss Jeff Beck.
I miss you K. I hope Heaven is a place your are happy, joyous and free. God Love's you.❤
when has jeff ever worn a real suit? that is him showing respect right here.
Jeff was fearless, played with anyone, everyone,, miss him allready
NEVER seen Jeff sit and perform!
He looked figity eh? Lol
There will only be ONE Jeff Beck
Jeff your music plaing is wunderfull. Traurig das du nicht mehr hier bist 😢
I can call him the best of the best, but there were and are some very talented guitarists. One thing I can say for sure, is that Jeff Beck was one of a kind, and there will never be another like him. May the Maestro Rest In Peace. God Bless him❤🙏✝
I always knew Jeff Beck was awesome but he blows me away every single time I see him, RIP Great One.
Who would ever thought I'll die before I get to old would be performing with an orchestra and with his mate Jeff Beck...thanks for posting this greatly appreciated 🙏.
When he wrote those lyrics and recorded "My Generation" with The Who in 1965, he had no idea how his musical range would expand and didn't know that some of his compositions would be so well-conceived that they would translate well to other musical formats beyond rock...
That's something which has always amazed me about his playing. Since "Truth" in 1968 to now, Jeff Beck has the most amazing way of simulating a singing voice with his guitar playing. Some of his more recent instrumentals are operatic in sound and style.
He's the most amazing musician!
the greatest rythem guitarist and the greatest lead guitarist on the planet together, pure heaven
True rock'n'roll!!🥁🎸pete townshend respect ✊👂🍻
Spectacular
Jeff Beck is my fav but
Pete is both lead and rhythm
😉
I remember reading an interview with Pete in Guitar Player magazine 50 years ago, where he stated he "couldn't do Jeff Beckisms." Here he brings in JB to do the Jeff Beckisms. R.I.P J.B.
Pete is such a brilliant song writer !
Jeff's incredible phrasing indeed. No one plays more lyrically. And Pete's such a wide-ranging genius, working on a lot of levels, way beyond genre boundaries but certainly expanding what we once called rock.
I have to wonder how, had he lived, Jimi Hendrix would have interpreted this song on guitar.
He made it look so easy. Unbelievable talent. Will sorely be missed. RIP Jeff Beck.
What a loss...dear Jeff Beck...the gentle giant of guitar gods...it hurts to have him gone.
January 2023 sadness and loss
R.I.P. Jeff Beck
Brilliant! RIP Jeff Beck
Absolutely brilliant. R.I.P. Jeff
Fantastic Beck's guitar effectively becomes Daltrey's vocals! Just brilliant!
Even Townshend sits there in awe of Beck.
Jeff always had the neck planted into his palm and never hit a bad note .... amazing talent.
that time when jeff beck played guitar with pete townshend...
master guitar player meets master songwriter [who is no slouch on the guitar himself]...
beautiful...
A truly great moment!!! :)
Well put
@Rage Theatre2020 100% agree!
"young man blues" is the sound townshend grabbing his guitar by its throat & ripping it to shreds!
@Rage Theatre2020 that album, & especially the mid-90s reissue, is 1 of my all-time favourite albums...
definitely a "desert island disc" for me!
Beautiful. R.I.P. Jeff.
My favorite song from my all time favorite album. Amazing...simply amazing. RiP Jeff...

My two favorite guitarists...what's not to love?
Townshend a genius composer. Period.
RIP maestro...thank you for Jeff Beck
Chills...beautiful, two of the best. Jeff Beck is always so very classy.
Two awesome talents, RIP Mr Beck
Just remember folks... Hank Marvin ! Listen to some Shadows albums. Beck, May, Knofler, Gilmour, Page, they were all going home after school and try to learn how Hank Marvin made his guitar sing!
Still feel heartbroken about his passing.
The loss of him has left a hole in my heart cannot filled.
He was the greatest player to explore all the possibilities that the electric guitar could hold, and a pioneer of astonishing virtuosity.
Also he was a seeker who sought to fuse all the vibrations, tones and sounds that exist on earth with a single electric guitar, it’s voice transcending languages, traversing across cultures, unbound by musical genres.
Really miss you so much, Jeff.
Sublime, both in existence and contribution. Thanks, Pete for this masterpiece and RIP, Jeff. Your presence will profoundly be missed.
What a performance! Kudos to Pete and Jeff! RIP Jeff Beck.
Jeff makes any song epic.
Thank you for sharing this. I had an older brother that had an older friend that introduced me to great music in the 70's.
This song has always been one of my favourites ever since i first bought Quadrophenia all those years ago. The orchestra just added to the sweeping majesty of it.
Great ostenato by The Who. I bought Quardrophenia back in high school in '73. And this comp was the highlight.
This is surprisingly beautiful... I have never heard these two musicians with a whole classical orchestra behind them. Strangely lush and moving. Beck can still really play! And Townsend does a beautiful guitar duet with him. Love it!
Sonically and soulfully amazing.
The Beautiful Power of Electric Guitar! All Things are Possible! Turn It Up!
Amazing version of a favorite song ❤
I can't think of anybody better to take Rodgers vocals than Jeff Beck. Thank you Jeff. Thank you Pete.
The two brits on strats......

So great to see them together, a very rare occurrence indeed.
🕉 🙏 ❤
The sheer beauty of hearing these two playing together. They both played with ❤️. Both with absolute understanding of the emotions beyond the 6 strings. The touch, the space they gave each note. It can only come with ❤️.
To highnumber13: thank you so much for posting this precious treasure. Brought me to tears.❤😢. Exquisite performance. Bravo!!
2 of my heroes on the same stage playing one of the best songs in history. Just amazing!
Two great musicians enjoying themselves together, elderly gentlemen in their 70es still having fun. Just had to laugh at how uncomfortable they were on those chairs. I believe this might be first time either of them ever sat down in hundreds of concerts.
Beautiful RIP Jeff Beck sure enjoyed your music GodBless!
As someone who was a mod and a Who lover at that time, and that is a music producer now, I only have one adjective for this: magnificent.
The late Jeff Beck was & always will be in my top 10 fave guitarists ever.Rock In Peace
Wow... what a great surprise.
I Love You Jeff ! Thank You Cosmic Brother !!!
Tears, the shivers, awe.
Whenever you see ten amazing guitarists on stage together they are all smiling and playing rhythm watching Jeff Beck kick ass!!!
it seems a lot of people here think this is a dick measuring contest.... It's just great to see two superb guitarists backed up with class musicians. As for the song, well it's simply one of the best!
If anyone thinks that, they must be pretty stupid. These two perfectionists obviously would have rehearsed this song. They weren't playing in a bar.
Besides, Townshend wouldn't abide a dick-measuring contest. 😛 He'd smash the guitar over Jeff's head at some point if he felt Jeff was purposefully shoving him into the back!
wdfndn Jeff Beck from The Yardbirds and Jimmy Page from The Who
Who is calling this a “Dick Measuring Contest”?
