  • While at the off grid wilderness cabin, looking for deer sheds, we came across a gruesome sight: a freshly attacked and killed deer carcass. It appears coyotes took down this deer in the winter snow. What do you think?

Coyote ate that deer. If it was a wolf there wouldn't be much of a carcass left as they even eat most of the bones. Also the antler sheds would be under the snow as the bucks lose their antlers early in the winter.

Thanks Todd. Agree. Definitely coyotes. In these parts they call them coywolves. They've tested DNA and the coyotes cross bread with the Eastern Algonquin wolves at one point.

Coyotes definitely. Whether they killed an ate it or it died and then they ate it is questionable.

I'm thinking they killed it. If it had died, it would have been snow covered and frozen up more. Doing some research, I found this is the time of year when coyotes will take down an adult deer. The snow gives them an advantage as the crusty surface can support the weight of the coyote, but the deer sinks in and quickly gets fatigued trying to run from the predators. The alpha male and female of the pack work together to wear down and then kill the deer.
