What's behind Ferrari's F1 revival... and is it real?

  • Is Ferrari’s mini-revival the real thing or is this just going to be another annoying false dawn for F1’s most famous team?
Back-to-back poles and a first win of the season, ENDING Red Bull’s perfect record in 2023, mark a hell of a turnaround for a team that looked like it was going nowhere just a few weeks ago and admitted it is designing a very different car for 2024.
What’s behind Ferrari’s current form and whether it is real will influence the rest of this season and could be a sign of things to come for next year too.

I know everybody got really excited last Sunday but everybody needs to accept that Red Bull is going to be at the top of the pile again when it comes to the next race! On any other track both Mercs and possibly Norris would have been able to overtake Sainz, putting Ferrari were it has been before, slower than Mercedes and fighting with McLaren. Singapore's unique challenges were the main contributor to Ferrari's success, not the car's pace.

I get the point you're trying to make but I don't think the floor would be the focus of teams based on RB's Singapore performance (at least no more than they already have looked at their floor development for next season). Teams have been working on their floor already. RB's issue wasn't only because they had to raise the ride height - it was because their whole package is built and optimised around running lower, because they (usually) can.
So what I think you really mean is that teams trying to create their own RB style floor to run lower should take note of Singapore and be wary not to create a package that is limited in the same way. Of course, 1 race out of 24 where you know you might struggle (as RB knew before going to Singapore) is likely worth having the performance at the other 23, rather than compromise a little bit everywhere else.

I've noticed that LeClerc has been really inconsistent in race trim this year, when the car doesn't turn in as he likes with the understeer, he brakes earlier than he would like leaving alot of performance on the table. With the margins being so tight this year, this can often lead to him calling the car undriveable when Sainz doesn't make the same comments.

I’m not saying this is a faux revival, btw. Just saying it’s historically been a strong suit for Ferrari, something that has lasted through generational rule changes.
2008 - Massa would probably have dominated and almost had a grand chelem in a normal race scenario.
2010 - Fernando takes pole and win (scantily) over Seb in a season otherwise RedBull-centric on performance.
2015 - Vettel (almost) grand chelem in a season otherwise dominated by Mercedes
    2016 - Vettel’s comeback from P22 to P4(P5?)
2017/2018 - potentially the quickest car that weekend
    2019 - Ferrari 1-2
and so on and so forth

  • @Roald94

i mean, this last raceweek proved that ferrari can step to the challenge when red bull is out of the picture. then again, this is mainly because redbull made some changes that didnt benefit them at all in this track. Also, some may speculate that the reason behind it is that whatever advantage they had during the season, it was nullified with some rule changes. So we will have to wonder wether red bull will step up their development again or will fall behind. whatever happens next, having a race where there is no clear winner for a change is certainly welcome. I'd like to see if ferrari can keep up, if mclaren can get a win next, or maybe aston martin get their chance to find themselves in the front again, maybe even have williams for a podium?. I dont mention mercedes because they had enough spotlight for now.

A few more difficult Sundays ahead for Ferrari I suspect - they had a 1-2 but had to sacrifice Leclerc to get the win because they are still struggling on raceday. Sainz drove brilliantly to take the win but had it been run at a track with better opportunities for overtaking, they were probably 3rd best on pace behind Mercedes and McLaren in race trim. Still lots of work for them to do.

They were faster than merc in the first stint and as fast on the hards for the 2nd stint Leclerc had engine issue the 20 laps or so which cost him 10kmh in the speed trap and several tenths in every acceleraition zone. Ferrari were faster than Mclaren. The only reason lando got close was because carlos slowed down to give him DRS, otherwise Lando would have stayed behind 3 seconds or so.
Their plan went out the window with the SC and having to double stack, which is what screwed Leclerc over. If there was no VSC, Sainz and Leclerc control the pace like they were and they bring in Leclerc a few laps before Carlos. If they had the gap to the midfeild, leclerc would get the massive undercut and still come out ahead of George

This video is based on a false premise. Ferrari has improved a little, but were on equal terms with Mercedes and McLaren. They were unable to open up a gap to those chasing them and at times struggled to keep them behind. If Ferrari did do anything right at Singapore it was to not spin out and to not mess up the strategy completely like they usually do. (Part of this is down to Sainz dictating strategy to the team over the radio.)

Zandvoort- Car slow. Charles gets damage from looking at piastri. Still get 5th with carlos outscore merc
Italy- Gapped by RB, Gap Mercedes 3-4 best possible outscore merc
Singapore- Carlos wins (probabaly the only shot all year for every non RB team) Charles cost merc one lap to get the move done with engine issues, geroge bins it, charles 4th outscore merc
