Ranking every 2023 F1 driver from worst to best

  • The 2023 F1 table tells one story, but points are far from the best way to rank the drivers.
Every year, The F1 team at The Race sticks its collective head above the parapet to risk angering, or perhaps even delighting, the dedicated fans of every single driver to create its own ranking.
This is based solely on their 2023 performances, relative to the machinery. It’s not a ranking of the overall ability of the drivers to say who is best and worst - but evaluating how they did over the 22 grand prix weekends.
So this factors in everything from qualifying speed and racecraft to number of mistakes and consistency - and every other metric in between.
And it reflects not the opinion of one individual, but The Race’s whole F1 team.

Also, I would put him 11th between the Ocon and Gasly, entirely because he showed the leadership that a driver should have after years at the same team in a way Ocon hasn't. But on pace, performance, and errors, I think those three are very close, with Gasly the best.

If not for some of the most atrocious luck in the year (4 non driver error related DNFs, all but one from podium positions, 2 grid penalties that cost 2 podiums and an untimely SC that cost him a win in Vegas) he'd have gotten 2nd in the WDC.
Luck corrected he also beat his teammate 14-3 in Ferrari's teammate race H2H.
He also made less errors than the likes of Hamilton and Alonso.
He himself had an avoidable racing incident in Australia and 2 Q3 crashes in Miami and Zandvoort.
Hamilton clumsily ran into another car in Miami qualifying, had contact in Spa sprint, crashed into another car in Italy and crashed into his teammate at Qatar.
Alonso missed his grid box in SA, kind of cost himself the win in Monaco with a bad tyre call, but its a bit harsh as it's judgement having to be called in seconds, crashed out of the Spa sprint, spun in Singapore, went into the gravel in Qatar and spun out at the start in Las Vegas and took out a number of drivers.

Charles fan here, but I wouldn't rank him 3rd over the season this year. In fact it has probably been one of his less brilliant seasons along with 2021. His best being 2020 with the tractor. I'd rank him somewhere in the top 5 or 6, slightly ahead of Sainz. The good things is he still maanged to impress with his fantastic poles against a dominant Red Bull and usually gave a decent display of himself. He's never fallen of form like Ricciardo or Perez to name a few. So I trust he will be back to his brilliant best.
Also have to make a case for the drivers in the bottom 4 teams, as it was much harder for them to score points for them this year with a more competitive grid.

So, I'm just checking to see if I understand this right. Lewis Hamilton was the fifth-best driver in what was probably the fourth-fastest car all season (behind Red Bull, Ferrari, and initially Aston Martin, but later McLaren). And yet he pulled out 3rd in the WDC by a comfortable margin. Make it make sense.
I listened to the reasoning on The Race F1 Podcast and how they arrived at these rankings. They talked about trying to avoid recency bias, but I cannot help but think that Hamilton's last six race results, results attained after his WDC fate was mostly locked in, weighed heavily in marking him down. He's comfortably second on this list if he would have finished all of those races in the top 5, which he only did the one time in Mexico City.

@@leonardohenriqueii2426 technically, The Race’s averages over the course of a full F1 season has the Mercedes as the third fastest car behind both Red Bull and Ferrari on a single lap.
Practically speaking, I would put dollars to donuts up that if you average the Aston Martin’s pace before Austria with the McLaren after Austria, that average would be faster than the Mercedes as well. So this is the basic of my claim that Mercedes was nominally fourth on the road over the course of the season.
And to be sure, there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. So it’s fair to be critical about such statements. But let’s not shade the truth. Let’s also be fair that there were several times (e.g., Barcelona) when the Merc was clearly the best non-Red Bull. And there were others (e.g., São Paulo) where they had the 6th fastest car.

Even with a bad car for half the season, Alonso had his shares of stinkers and mistakes.

@@Athinira its funny two other drivers (Sainz and other) spun at the same point because the track was dirty from the oil of classic cars before the race (still ended 9). He broke his floor at a practice in the mid of the season if don't remember bad, that's an error, but not that he was out form in any way, he was trying to push, like the spin. The only race he was bad was in Singapore, he made some errors and wasn't quick at any point of the race, he end 15. Aside that race and 2 retirements, at the other races always 9 or above (8 podiums 2th x3 3th x5) with a midfield car. The car got obviously worse like yourself recognized (but try to not look like you do, lol). He clearly carried the team, has win price to battle of the year, winning Perez with much slower car but hey, for Charles was bad luck while having more errors and less podiums than Fernando with a slower car but for Alonso was bad performance. 🤡🤡

One thing you can give Perez is that he finally got Red Bull their first one-two in points. I know Webber was checked out in 2013, but that was when Red Bull had the greatest advantage when Seb won the title. Webber had nothing for Alonso and the Mercs in 2013. So, even with that gulf in car performance. GG Checo, you managed to do what Mark Webber couldn’t.

Watch back Perez in his Force India / Racing Point days. He's not a bad driver, he was one of the best on the grid. Look at Albon and Gasly now, they're impressing everyone and were easily the two best midfield drivers this year. And Verstappen bodied them all. Yeah a driver like Lando, Leclerc, Lewis or Alonso could challenge Max, but anyone else is just gonna look washed.
And why would those drivers join redbull and probably lose to Max in that car when they've got a top team that is fully behind them pushing to the front of the grid. Let's face it, Max is never going to be seriously challenged by a teammate.

As a Pérez fan, I feel so bittersweet after his best result ever in a single season in F1, with so many ups and downs. But what this ranking says is that 12 other pilots would do better in the RB19. So, on which drug is Red Bull not to replace him now? He brings some sponsorship dough, but others do too. Any opinions?

    • @suikamanti9131

I feel it is a fair assesment. RB19 was a beast of a car. and checo was 3rd most expensive driver in crashes this sesson, 2nd if you exclude the manhole cover accident of Sainz in las Vegas. The dude brings moneyfor redbull, but I am confident when I say that his best days are gone. and it would be better he retired on a high note.

In my opinion, this list is good but needs a couple changes:
    - Stroll drops below Ricciardo and Zhou. He had a way better car for most of the season and should’ve helped Aston to 2nd
    - Piastri goes above Sainz. Yes Sainz had the only non-RedBull win, but he too often made mistakes and went missing in races. Piastri was a rookie in a way worse car at the start of the year and had atrocious luck throughout but dealt with it amazingly
    - Norris goes above Leclerc and Alonso. Norris beat Leclerc to 2nd in last year’s ranking despite having a better 2023 and Leclerc dropping back slightly. As for Alonso, his season was spectacular; it’s just that Norris fared better when their respective cars were worse.

Checo brought home the first 1-2 finish for Red Bull, and he's consistently shit on by the F1 media. The RB19 was capable of winning races in the hands of someone who can tame it. It is clearly not to Checos preference, and there are very few drivers on the grid who could have done better than he did in that very tricky car.
