- Tonight marks the 31st anniversary of the last Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. In honor of the occasion this episode from June 1989 marks what no one knew this would be Sammy Davis's last appearance on Tonight.
This episode is so normal it's almost boring, but we didn't know we'd never see Sammy swing thru Lady is a Tramp or share a laugh with Johnny again. Within a year Sammy would be gone and Johnny would be signing his last contract. Tonight let's relive the memories.

We will never see the likes of this talented man again. Sammy, Frank and Dean were uncomparable entertainers, each in their own right. Thank God I was able to witness their genius.
The word Legend is being thrown around too often these days. Getting lifetime achievement awards at 40?? Real Legends have spent decades honing their Craft and you know they are the best entertainers in the World.....
The premiere of Sammy on the Joey Bishop Show in 1967 brought me here!

Sammy is a giant when it comes to talent.
Even on this particular show,sammy davis jr.proved why he was considered the greatest entertainer.his voice was exceptional.
Oh I do so wish he was still here. He is magnificence personified. He could show the mediocrity of today how it's REALLY done. However I feel that the way the world is going today he would be more than a little disappointed. So much of what he achieved seems to be going backwards. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

This is great! Sammy's voice is noticably rougher than it was in his prime - still, it's good. I think Arsenio got the last shot, roughly a year or so later.
I can't tell which was Sammy's last talk show appearance. He did Johnny, Arsenio, and Letterman in the same 2 week period in June 1989. I recorded them each on different tapes, not realizing which one was last might be important someday. I do know Sammy's last televised singing performance was on the Jerry Lewis Telethon in September of 1989. Sammy publicly confirmed the cancer a couple of days after that.
Mr. Davis ALWAYS delivered. He was simply terrific.

Do you happen to have the appearance where he did "Mr. Bojangles" especially for Johnny? The best version that I've ever heard. I think it was around 1976.
I do. It was in May, 1978. The problem is the Carson Estate put a 30 minute version of that out on DVD (check Amazon or Ebay). Since that is for sale I believe it would be a copyright strike. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
