- In 1988, Sammy Davis Jr. got a chance to perform a show he said he had waited to do for 58 professional years...an evening singing with the legendary Boston Pops orchestra under the baton of John Williams. He does a short 30 minute set encompassing all of his best known hits with a couple extras along the way! ;)
Set-list:
It Only Takes A Moment
Satin Doll
I've Gotta Be Me
The Birth of the Blues
The Leslie Bricusse-Anthony Newley Medley: Talk to the Animals/The Candy Man/Once In A Lifetime/Gonna Build A Mountain/What Kind Of Fool Am I?
Mr. Bojangles
Dance Routine - Видеоклипы
I'm nearly 77 years old and this man, " Sammy" has been the greatest alround talented person i have seen. He is brilliant. What a talent.
He never ever gave a bad performance. Here, in his early 60s, there is no evidence of age or weakness in his vocals.
A movie wouldn't do justice to this multi-talented man. He had a fascinating life. Let's see a limited series about his life. Such a performer, actor, singer, dancer. One of a kind, and very much missed.
I agree!! I was born in 1999 and Sammy’s music has me nostalgic for years I never seen but also sets the tone for many of situations I go through in 2024. RiP Sammy Davis Jr. your music is timeless Mr. Bojangles
Let alone I don’t want Hollywood fabricating the truth of Sammy! A series, a film, a documentary won’t be enough!
the man was a genius..wish he were here now...so under appreciated..swept the sidewalk for black entertainers to come! Respect...Sammy!
Sammy Davis, Jr was one of the most talented, gifted and outstanding performers to ever grace a stage. Because he lived in a racist society he was under appreciated, mistreated and robbed. Truly outrageous!
Dedicated to me by my loving boyfriend when we were college juniors; he became my even more loving husband for 59+ years and this song has remained ever meaningful for us through the years.
What a gift to the world. He is 61 here I am 89 2023 and his tap dancing inspired me to learn same with confidence to perform in neighborhood theater. Thank you Sammy. Bea youngblood
His knowledge about rhythm phrasing was unreached in Show Business, simply Genius !
And now ladies and gentlemen , you have seen it all!
There’s simply no one
Like him!
Majesty, performance , grace and one who served the appetite of wonder and beauty.
A unique all round entertainer and a proper gentleman. Nobody even comes close to him today.
Sammy singing and John Williams conducting. A lot of talent in this room.
Without any question the greatest entertainer of ALL time!!!!
One of the very best showman of all times.
Born for this he was. What a great performer and amazing talent. RIP
What a beautiful man he was, and such a gentleman, I just can't get enough of him
2 Years Later from the concert we lost the Greatest of all time
I had the honor of seeing Sammy Davis Jr. perform in person 3 times
wow that is so cool
Not that you'll see this two years later, but where did you see him, and who backed him?
30 years since we lost him . You are sorely missed. RIP my friend.
I've seen a number of famous musicians in person...but will always regret missing Sammy in person and also Ray Charles.
he graciously kissed my hand, after I expressed my admiration and love of his talent and his great courage and commitment to our people as expressed in his YES I CAN autobiography. This was at the Oscar Micheaux Awards in Oakland, Ca . I can't remember the year - approximately late 1970's or in the 1980's.
Undoubtedly the greatest entertainer. There is no other male singer with the range and style. Ever time I listen to him singing I am in awe. All others feel free to stand in line.
Yes. Without a doubt, the greatest entertainer ever. ❤️
i never get tired of Sammy do Mr. Bojangles that's bec in many ways he's like him.
Nobody touches him! Not even Sinatra or Bennett. The greatest entertainer ever.
Sammy Davis Jr What Great Entertainer of all time.. A brilliant performer Artistic Dancer Solo entertaining the world audience with graceful without backing up...But wonderful musicians and Orchestra.. Americas contributions to human kind.. God Bless you in heaven singing and and dance...
I feel so lucky to have had a little bit of Sammy and all the rest of his friends in my life as I grew up.
I love watching the real stars that made entertainment entertaining!
I missed this in 88” but so happy I found it today ❤️
Peace n Love to Sammy and his friends . All are dearly missed 🙏☮️💟
Two years from death of throat cancer, and listen to that voice. Fantastic. How great would it have been if he recorded an album with the Pops at this time? Some people say Sinatra was king. Pffft. Sinatra's voice was shit by the time he hit 50. Sammy, here at about 63 sounds wonderful.
Music’s not a competition. I love Frank, Sammy, Dino, Elvis, Bobby Darin, Tony Bennett, brook Benton, BB Kong, Charles Brown.., Bob Wills , Charlie Rich - & many more...all sang with soul and their own stamp.. we have had an embarrassment of great American talent. Not impressed with 21st century music yet!
Sammy's voice was unique and in some ways maybe under appreciated because he did EVERYTHING else so well. But I loved the tone and tenor of his voice immensely!! He sang, danced, acted, played several instruments and could do impressions and comedy. And he did all those things really well. Are you kidding!!!! What a Giant he was!!!!
Sinatra’s voice was still great when he recorded Sinatra at the Sands-1965. He was 50….same year he recorded “It was a Very Good year”. Hardly shit.
Sinatra voice held up till mid seventies then in the eighties not as great by the nineties he should of retired , but his sixties body of work is brilliant…swinging ballads….
Best male vocalist of all time
Wow!!!!! Satin doll!! He was unique. One of the few that deserves live forever
The greatest entertainer of this century. I have always admired his class acts
An all around entertainer. He could do it all. Mr. Davis Jr. RIP.
Wherever you are SDJ, I hope you understand how much you are still loved. I always knew that you would put on a great show, whether you sang, danced or played the drums, we were in for some awesome entertainment. And what a wonderful actor!!!! People will always love you. ❤❤💕💜💐😊❤❤
The best black entertainer ever. Rest in peace the great Sammy Davis
Not just black.
Incomparable performer. He enthralled his audience. Perfect entertainer commanding the instrumentation to peak performance. His vocalisation was powerful and arresting. Indescribable show. Wonders of entertainment incredulously.😮❤🎉
Wow! Fabulous talent, American original, Sammy is entertainment! NOBODY near him today.
Amen to that
...or in his day either. I personally thing he was better than Sinatra, Crosby and Martin IMHO.
@@robertdore9592 No argument here!
so good to hear this real music performed by real humans on real instruments and sung by a voice with no auto tune. this world has lost something over the last decades
You might like to check out Kurt Elling; he's a massive talent in the tradition of guys like Sammy Davis Jr and Billy Eckstein.
As is Bobby Darin
Mr Davis was truly a blessed entertainer.
Thank you Mr Sammy Davis Jr💖
Actor, comedian, dancer, singer etc. The quintessential entertainer. R.I. P MR. Davis.🙏
Songs that are kind and don't cuss you out. I love that. I giggled when he gave snapping instruction "snap on the 2 and the 4." I love it.
THE closest thing we will ever see born in flesh to a A GOD . GOD BLESS U SAMMY . GENIUS !!!!!
These entertainers of yesteryear cant be rivalled there just two talented
GREAT DAD; This number is one of my favorites performed by the personification of Greatness!!!
Always have A VOICE!!!
Love ❤️ Louella
This was not long after I met him, along with his lovely wife Altovise, at one of the opening parties for the Segerstrom Hall/OC Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa. He was so charming and loved the fact that I knew every song from his B'way hit Golden Boy, "You're too young to remember that." Just a total class act.
R.I.P. Sammy Davis Jr 1925-1990
Such a great voice
My God what a talent!!! RIP Sammy!
Sam was the man! He did it all!
Always amazed that a man so small in stature could have a voice (and talent) that was 10 feet tall!
the man could. sing. act impersonate.sammy had it all. top 5 in my book. oh and could he ever dance.
One of the greatest entertainers who ever lived.
What a great and talented man ❤
Sammy was the whole package, the best of the best!
Sammy Davis Junior is the truth!
This is what show business is all about!
No extra electronics, autotuning, backing tracks, every sound came from that stage. FLAWLESSLY! Incredible performance.
Unwiederbringliche Spitzenklasse!!
He's so effortless. He never has to reach or climb to those high notes, but it's not without gravitas. He's the biggest talent out of the Rat Pack and I think the others could appreciate that no matter how big their own ego. You can see when they take turns doing solo interludes, Sinatra and Martin look at each other like they're so proud it's very sweet. I think they were clear about how much harder Sammy Davis had it compared to themselves.
He was the triple threat - actor, singer and dancer, and great at all three.
What a performer RIP
Thanks for this video.
There will never be a Sammy Davis movie.
Who could possibly create this amazing individual in cinematic form ?
He lived so many different lives, in so many different decades.
Who was he really? He lived the prejudice of some white, the dislike of some coloured, who called him a “coconut “.
Who would you be if you were in his shoes ?
He was A GREAT ENTERTAINER.
Musician, actor, dancer, singer.
I saw him live once, I went to his dressing room and got his autograph.
Such a little chap, such a GREAT ENTERTAINER.
And the 6 people who gave thumbs down can give up their souls now
That is funny!
Sammy was an Entertainer from his lil sweet heart His stage presence was second to non. I love to hear him sing Mr. Bogangles and The Candy Man Can. He was so incredibly Amazingly Beautiful!!!
Thank you, Sammy...you are the best!
Wanderful Mixed Man Sammy Davis Jr.🙏
A little fella but a big man love you Sammy
Um dos melhores cantores do mundo, nessa época sua voz já estava fraca, devido talvez a doença que o levou!!Saudades!!
Awesome !
The Best Cuban American entertainer of all time!!!👍👍🍷🍷💐💐💐♥️♥️
It was amazing working with him.
Class and superb talent!!!!
I love that man 🥰 thank you for keeping this video! RIP
Watching again two years later -- still great.
love the man
É muito talento numa pessoa só! Espetacular! Só faltou as imitações de cantores e atores que ele fazia tão bem! Sua voz já não estava a mesma pela idade e talvez ao câncer na garganta que o matou devido a grande quantidade de cigarro que fumava...
He was so impeccable.
He is the total entertainer with him goes elvis..
HOW CAN ANYBODY NOT LIKE THIS VIDEO? FOUR MORONS!
SAMMY DAVIS JR. WAS THE ABSOLUTE TOPS! I hope when I meet my maker. I get to meet him and the rest of the Rat Pack! Then I'll know I died and went to heaven!
Wonderful!
Fantastic concert, if the audience DOES appear to be something our of Ripley's Believe It Or Not.
Sublime Music Channel that’s funny as hell
I gotta be me. I love that song
Awesomeness ❤️👏🏽❤️👏🏽❤️👏🏽❣️🔥
Please keep sending his videos! Thank you!
best of the best.
ESTE GRANDE ARTISTA DO SEU TEMPO QUE EU VI EM CINEMA DEU-ME MUITA ALEGRIA SAPATEAVA MUITO BEM ARTISTA COMO MUITOS OUTROS QUE JÁ PARTIRAM E UMA VERDADE.
My favorite all-time singer/dancer
Seconded only to Jerry Lewis as my all-time favorite entertainer
Legend.
He is loose and cool here..when he was comfortable he really clicked..
Очень душевно !!!
We know this man can sing in almost any genre, and he can dance, act, do impersonations and comedy skits, he even plays the drums in some concerts. We know he do all this either extraordinarily well or very well because he has all that talent. But where does he find the time to rehearse, to practice all these disparate skillsets sufficient to get it all down and keep them fresh, in time for his performances? Each of these skills is normally a separate career full of rehearsal, and practice sessions among mortal entertainers to perfect. When does the man sleep, relax in front of the tv, play poker or golf, go out on dates with his wife?
Quelle classe!
Super Sammy ❤Merci😢
je suis francaise mais j'adore j'adore. Dommage que l.on ne fasse pas plus de diffusion de ce grand artiste
unbelievable good 🙏
Taking one day at a time DaD!!! Your Ace in the whole!!! Thanks for all the love a dad can give. LONG LIVE THE KING!!! And his forever Queen Mom, Sam & Luci’ Lucille.
Many hats, a coat of many colors and a heart that never bleeds out!!
Able and Ready to receive you all back into our family room and home with true household of faith!!
😆 So wonderful that microphones made it possible for us to answer long distance calls and have family visits face to face in our family room and even on television now adays I have accepted and adapted the use of it and it brought our family businesses closer as one, and as we knew it would. Jehovah’s saving power never failed any of us HEBREW NATIONALS with American Indian Habitation.
What glorious genes!!! The strength of a spiritual giant with Moms “curb appeal”.
All behind us now the divisive force of the things we were instructed to leave behind!!! Never to influence even the dirt under our feet.
Hats off to all of our Paternal and Maternal lovers of truth and righteousness as instructed from our Almighty God above.
All is Well!!! Hallelujah Grandma Luella + Aye Aye Aye brought us the VICTORY!!! Amen Amen
Nice!!!❤
He’s my kind of man!
❤️❤️❤️
I’ve Gotta Be Me 7:20
Whether I'm right or whether I'm wrong
Whether I find a place in this world or never belong
I gotta be me, I've gotta be me
What else can I be but what I am
I want to live, not merely survive
And I won't give up this dream
Of life that keeps me alive
I gotta be me, I gotta be me
The dream that I see makes me what I am
That far away prize, a world of success
Is waiting for me if I heed the call
I won't settle down, won't settle for less
As long as there's a chance that I can have it all
I'll go it alone, that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I've gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
I've gotta be me
I'll go it alone, that's how it must be
I can't be right for somebody else
If I'm not right for me
I gotta be free, I just gotta be free
Daring to try, to do it or die
I gotta be me
とっても羨ましいショーです。まだ余裕の有る時代でしたね!
The Best!!!🍷💐💐
WOW!
Who would know the man would pass 2 years later? DONT smoke! They'll kill ya!
L E G E N D
I'm confused. if he was born in 1925, and he performed in 1988, doesn't this make him either 62 or 63?
He didnt start performing until he was 3 or 4 years old. 58 years as a professional ( getting paid to perform)
Sammy Davis Jnr was bigger and better than Sinatra. Its just a shame that when he introduced the song Satin Doll, Sammy Davis Jnr, failed to mention that Johnny Mercer wrote the words to Duke Ellington's tune.
imonthebox1 imonthebox2 Thats a supreme compliment you gave the late Great Sammy Davis Jr and yes he was certainly great but I give equal billing with Sinatra, Ole Blue Eyes was a show stopper as well.
@pa59so true
Let’s not pit the distinctive Sinatra vs. Sammy. Love’em both.. The Mercer thing is an oversight but not a requirement. People know Davis was not song writer but the song is famous as a Basie tune. I will have to to find other singing versions as it a a great revamp.
Sinatra knew Sammy was better
@@paulettewright6389 , Both men were tops in their own fields. That's putting it mildly...
