imagine making an unofficial fan animation that is so fucking good it becomes canon
Although thats true, the Warhammer universe is SO MASSIVE, with so much lore, yet so much unknown, that you can make anything and make it canon.
Obviously you can't go crazy, like making a god stronger than all existing ones, or a huge chapter or even secret race that manipulated all events. Yeah thats to far.
I might make something of my own, like a small splinter chapter or a new race at the edge of the galaxy.
But hey, Warhammer is already fantastic itself.
@@_Cohuna the homebrew/fanfic stuff is my favorite part of 40k. It’s really the community that keeps the hobby going.
@@baalgar5530 bro, the angry marines chapter is so funny.
the artist that made this is now employed by games workshop
They told him to take down his videos
I hope the Amazon show is half as good as this animation. I don't think Henry can live through another dream project being ruined by things out of his control.
Its live action, so its likely to be really badly focused on character drama for no reason at all.
@@YellowHerb sad but true
@@YellowHerb That just comes with live-action tho, it doesn't mean it can't be good, 40k needs more character focused stories imho.
@@YellowHerb The Raid and Dredd 2012 showed you can make damn good films with pure action.
henry cavill is named as the executive producer, so he will have the last say in whatever is done. and we already know he is a fan of sticking to the source material
The thing that really made this great is how efficient the Marines are. They are on a clock, they never stop moving forward, not for anything. Same thing when the psyker got taken, the second that psyker lost control, he got smoked in a fine display of overkill.
that psyker could fuck them all up that was def not an overkill
@@johnyguitar258 I am pretty sure that marine punched his head off. The bolter rounds were just insurance.
@@johnyguitar258 rule #2 double tapp
Like Johny said, possessed Psykers are nothing to take lightly for how much damage they can do, so rather than letting him fall to the ruinous powers and become an issue, they dispatched him right away in the most "merciful" way.
I saw this discussion somewhere else already. One guy made an argument: The Marine was not overkilling, but he was on spot. According to the Tabletop Rules, a Chaos Demon takes on average 4 hits to kill. That Marine was Ammo efficient
Best Warhammer animation ever made, by single guy before Gw buy it.
You said blackmail incorrectly!
and from a kiwi too (new zealander) cant wait to see what he does with their financial backing. Screw all these people that say otherwise. GW see a talent when they do. Look at all the authors they have writing the lore, Dan abnett, mike lee etc they werent born from GW's butt hole. This is the prelude to a proper 40k series. At least I hope so anyway.
The emperor protects brother.
@@miscnchipnelson8101 Games Workshop are tyrants and money-grubbers, and their only decent writer is Aaron Dembski-Bowden. Dan Abnett and Graham McNeill used to be good but their stuff has become very prosaic.
@@miscnchipnelson8101 We await what they'll do.
@@miscnchipnelson8101, I think he did that official Primaris Intercessor video similar to Iron-Man suiting up for the first time in the MCU. Said Primaris video was most probably also inspired by the Raptor video on RUclips, which was awesome. And... Still waiting on Astartes II, which I'm betting he's expanding upon since starting with GW.
The sheer amount of attention to detail is insane
At 10:26 you can see his cape recoil a bit with every bolter shot because bolter rounds explode
That's amazing
or at 4:50 you can see the bolter rounds get reflected by the psykers oncoming shockwave
In the opening sequence as the boarding torpedo is entering. You can see the fighter craft take out the engines.
didnt see that before, good eye! and crazy detail, love this animation
Also because bolter shells are rocket propelled so they have some backblast
youre a legend for pointing that out. Everytime I rewatch it I spot a new detail and its incredible.
Syama Pedersen's Astartes animation stands head and shoulders above any Games Workshop official content because of how no-nonsense and practical everything is. There is no generic voice-over or a rousing speech that everyone's heard a thousand times already. No one is stopping to pose for the trailer, the action is fast, effective, brutal and sound from the tactical viewpoint, both from the Astartes and the rebels. Pedersen's work manages to convey with every detail that the Space Marines are superbly trained superhuman soldiers, indoctrinated to fight and kill with zero hestitation. That's exactly what they are doing, and it is all that they are doing. If you compare this with the Ultramarines vs Tyranids from GW's video, it almost seems like everyone there knows they are on camera - both the Marines and the Xenos waste time staring each other down, posing with their weapons, roaring, flexing, and generally not employing the best tactical options. Given that they are supposed to be professional soldiers with hundreds of years of experience on one side, and mindless swarm of insectoid killer aliens on the other side, things like this stand out and shatter the suspension of disbelief. On the contrary, Syama Pedersen's portrayal is gritty, down-to-earth, captivating with its consistence and adherence to military realism.
The scene that captures this comment is at 245 when the heavy weapons team kicks up. Everything is there. And to put on point about the marines being brutal, two shots and the point of view is incredible
You articulate my own impression perfectly. The shots where the marine takes heavy fire from a lascannon, recognizes the threat, and drops a smoke grenade in the same movement as he takes cover to switch to his plasma weapon... just beautiful. The bit at the end where the same marine just instantly completes the neck stab he never had any intention of failing to execute the moment the psyker's shield fell is the same. Fast, efficient, deliberate, with every spent bit of effort moving towards their objective is how I expect Astartes to operate. Scene direction like this is SO much more exciting and satisfying than any amount of cartoonish posturing.
@@AdamG-ng6gl Thanks mate. Just one small point to add: Note that when the lascannon starts firing, the Marine immediately returns fire with the bolter. He fires three shots and two of them hit the lascannon emplacement, but don't penetrate the shield. Only then he drops the smoke grenade, takes cover and switches to the plasma gun. The action is so fast and superhumanly efficient that it took me several rewatches to get these details.
I’d like to imagine how good the Star Wars Sequel trilogy could have been if there were regiments with even a portion of the mechanical menace Astartes had (maybe the Knights of Ren that turned out to be jokes in the end).
I love this comment.
Imagine being able to make a fan made film in your back bedroom that is so much better than anything turned out by a multinational, multimillion pound company.
Madness.
Passion and corporate are not 2 words that can generally be used together
Par for the course in todays shiite storm clown world.
I can only assume that GW has a problem with some absolutely terrible leadership, just some “number go up” ghouls or some old nerds who refuse to admit that their vision of their universe is weaker than what the fans of it can produce.
They are sitting on a goldmine but all they care about is selling more nuggets. Incredibly short sighted stupidity or overinflated ego, one of the two, or maybe both.
Goatse, now more than ever.
@@CosmicSphincter As the company has said "We are a model company. Not a game company" AKA they ONLY care about selling models. All other things are supposed to funnel in to that market.
It’s kinda mind boggling that this was all done by ONE guy. There have been whole animation studios that haven’t been this clean.
To be fair, motivated people can achieve a lot more than unmotivated ones, just look at what ISIS achieved...
agreed, everything about this animation is TOP tier. you could tell me this a sneak peak for a mega budget Hollywood product, i would totally fall for it.
I will watch his career with a great interest
@@kespec Main reason he's able to pull it off is genius set- / scene-design. What I mean by that is that he primarily chose closed off spaces and corridors for majority of the scenes. This alleviates a lot of heavy duty work he would've been forced to do for backgrounds, good backgrounds take a ton of time and they generally make or break this level of animation in terms of realistic look.
Not only that but this also allows him to use very intentional lighting, he gets to avoid any natural lighting that uses the sun or environment, meaning a whole lot less work for simulation and matching the light to the sun etc. The usage of dark scenes and or scenes that only carry one strong light source again allows him to hide spaces where he otherwise would need to place lots of good looking assets. A general rule of thumb for any CGI is that, the darker it is, the easier it is to make it look good because you can hide imperfections. This is very important for a 1-man job as not only are their skills stretched thin (no other artists to aid them), but also safes a toooon of time, meaning they can spend more time on polishing the stuff that has greater impact.
This person is unbelievably skilled, it doesn't matter what talents you're born with. For this level of solo-work you just need to have incredible skill that's been amassed with lots, lots and lots of practice. The most jaw-dropping thing is seeing someone this skilled in visuals, be so unbelievably skilled in the audio side of things, these two do not carry overlapping skills like cgi, animation and cinematography does. The audio production is nearly flawless which is just unheard of for the amount of practice it requires to reach this level in both fields (visual and auditorial).
@@NomSaucereally helpful comment. Thank you 🙏
As many have pointed out, what makes this film great is not just the masterful visual storytelling and animation--it's that for perhaps the first time ever, the Space Marines are taken *seriously* . Every single piece of media that Games Workshop has released from movies to games has the Space Marines shouting battle cries about "glory, honor, for the emperor, yadda yadda", when realistically, war is much too grim to ever be as campy as that. When I was a kid, I dreamed of a film where the Space Marines got treated like ACUTAL marines, and not the glory-obsessed sycophants we see them portrayed as all the time. This is the closest we've ever got to that, I feel.
It's literally in the lore that they are super duper rare to the point that the majority of the universe don't even believe that Astartes exist
And them being so rare should tell that they are basically the special forces of the special forces
I mean they're literally demi Gods
That's why I find GW astartes so lame because they act so cartoonish
they literally are glory obsessed sycophantic, fanatical warroir priests, where have you been
*Agreed!* I don't know this franchise too well, but their cold, swift efficiency makes perfect sense, and it's so impactful. They don't stop. They don't waste movements. They don't flinch. When that marine was trying to get close to those telepaths, he didn't even pause to process the fact that he was being telekinetically crushed. The *_whole_* time they had him subdued, he was completely focused on finishing the knife attack. The moment he was freed, he didn't stop to pull himself together, or drop a one-liner. He just instantly finished the fatal blow he was already in the middle of executing. Now that's rare, tactical and realistic (well, for a superhuman space marine).
My mistake. He _does_ pause just a little, but he's so quick to finish the attack that blink and you'd miss it.
well for the blood ravens i akways regarded "glory-obsessed" as fitting :D 100% with you though!
This video is literally of master piece work of art. How could it possibly be any better? Make a movie, print money!!
Unfortunately the artist was hired by GW to work on their own animations. Knowing GW lately, all they'd do is butcher it into oblivion. Sometimes the best we can do, is let it die.
Another Space Marine exclusive sausage fest like most of their media? Yeah, would be cool but not necessary.
It is better in its original audio and music not this GW version.
@@TWLpontus Where is the original?? Can you paste a link please? And thank you!
All they can see is plastic sales, they don’t seem to understand how cool their universe could be and how much appeal it can have by simply expanding on different elements of it - or their past attempts lack the special sauce that their fans can access but they can’t, so the number go up ghouls won’t even try.
The incredibly dumb part is that the popularity of astartes shows that it’s already there, they don’t have to do research, this animation got millions of views and made people notice 40k who would have never cared had they seen the Hasbro ass shit GW puts out.
They are morons, plain and simple.
Idk how a video with no dialog still is able to convey so much emotion. Everything the space marines do feels impactful and heavy. I love it, I hope there is a lot more stuff in the show without a ton of dialog
Every second is a new wallpaper
It actually is. Just pause it and scroll to random parts.
I always thought the small pillars in the final scene were really small or very close to the marine. But actually they're much further away and you can see the other marines being teleported in just before it cuts to end.

There’s so much love in this video. I started watching this when I first learned what warhammer was a few months ago, up until now where I am painting my first custom chapter. I’ve seen this video with so many varying degrees of lore knowledge, and somehow, I still manage to see new things each time. The reason this video is herald as one of the greatest representation of the universe is how masterfully crafted and directed it is from start to finish. Every inch, every second, of every moment makes it feel like a visceral warhammer universe. A lot of people point out that their favorite moment is the squad leaders flinch at the spooky entity change. Mine is him blasting the ball with the plasma pistol. Even in that last moment of “I’m being eaten by an orb” he collects himself and with his free hand pulls his sidearm. Then when it starts eating his gun, he says “fine, here’s a taste”. Blasting off his arm, i imagine he thought “aw, nuts”
only just now did i notice that the lasguns used by the gun crew that fires a rocket at the marines have accurate lasgun sfx. lasguns fire fx were originally described almost like a snapping whip, and you can hear that if you listen close. took me *THIS LONG* to hear them or even notice them-
I think he didn't blast his arm off by mistake, it was more like a last ditch effort to free himself out of the orb's pull
This deserves way more recognition, it's absolutely astonishing.
the creator got the highest amount of recognition one could ask for, he literally got hired by Games Workshop (company who produces Warhammer) because of these animations, and that's why the original videos aren't on his RUclips anymore, they got moved to the Warhammer Community website
@@CalSniffsMilo not sure if you know update but here it is:
For those wondering what happened, Games Workshop (GW) introduced new intellectual property rules this year that completely forbid any fan-made animations or basically any community productions that use GW content. They basically told all of their most hardcore fans to delete everything they had passionately worked on for years for nothing other than the love of the hobby, purely out of a misplaced sense of greed. Astartes didn't upgrade. It was buried.

animators are great, but what made this astounding was the modeling done and texture work. maybe I'm biased since Im a 3d modeler but the graphics were astounding.
This guy really paid attention to every detail, i love that he made the bolter rounds ping off as the psyker sent a shockwave to the marine.
the whole fight with the enemy psyker is just a perfection how proper Astartes works. It was clever, strategic, quick, and brutal.
I would love to see this with the original audio/music ♥
what was changed?

This comment will probably get lost to the tides of internet time. Although this film was so brilliantly put together I just have to comment. Ku-FUCKING-dos Syama Pederson. This must be one of the best curated fantasy sequences of all time. The quality immaculate. The attention to detail flawless. The love of the universe eternally apparent. And I just got interested in the 40k universe the other week. No need for acquired knowledge of lore to enjoy this masterclass in animated film creation. Im still getting over the fact that I forgot this level of quality is even possible anymore. Syama, you deserve a fucking medal...

3:33 Astarte fires two shots from his bolter, which bounce off the turret; he hears it, and reacts.

The most accurate representation of WH40k, ever.
Yes, the eternal sausage fest that is Space Marines and only Space Marine, in essence WH40k
@@TheAnimaAnimal You understand that all the Astartes are clones, right... of a dude. Most soldiers are dudes. All of these ones, on both sides wore masks, so mot sure if they were all dudes. Yes, war is a big sausage fest, lol. I'm sorry you find this revelation disturbing, though I confess, I can't see how having a few women getting blown into bits in the mix, or a set of tit armor here and there would have improved the action. You know, considering the only spoken words in the film were spoken by the warp entity. WHo could have identified as a woman, who knows?
@Josh Indermuehle Bro first off Astartes are not clones. You exposed yourself. Every Astartes is an individual that was 99% most likely a very very young child that went through the process of taking in the geneseed,in no way are they clones. They have their own personalities, goals and choices. Second off there are no female Space Marines it's literally not possible for a woman to become a Space Marine whatsoever so yes every single one of them are men. I recommend actually learning about 40k instead of watching a video and trying to lecture people when you don't know the literal basics.
@@TheAnimaAnimal You should check out the Adeptus Sororitas. Aka Sisters of Battle. Aka the nuns with guns.
They are one of the most powerful groups in 40k. Beings a lot of them are blanks, they are one of the few surefire answers to a psyker threat. And they are only female. 40k is way more inclusive than you'd think at first glance.
@@TheAnimaAnimal Trollolol
Always felt a little bad for that psyker. He was doing everything right, listening in on the entities and warning the marines about their countermove and that little, tiny distraction was enough for the alien mind to slip in and break his mind.
This really is the best Warhammer flick ever produced. I started on the plastic crack in the early 90s and by the end of the decade it still hadn't caught on with normies. That one fan could produce a short film of such quality is incredible, no wonder they signed him up.

If you have a good sound system (2.1 preferably) or a good headset the sound engineering is awesome !!!! That deep rumble and the sharp highs and middles combined sounds are a great "treat" for your ears ... All and all this short clip is sooo good !!
This is the best job resume I have ever seen
this is why I despise current copyright rules. Look what creative talents are out there, just see what they can do if they are allowed to and compare to that the "official products" who are so restricted by "people in suits" reading from flowcharts and lawbooks to make sure they milk every nanny and kindergarten child.
They say the laws are to make sure the creators are "rewarded for their work" but the truth is that they want exclusive milking rights of the cow for a select group which often not even involves the original creators anymore.
This is why we cant have good things!
The issue for me is trying to determine where the lines should be drawn between the two ends of this debate: "an artist should have exclusive rights to profit from their own work" and "an artist's work belongs to the world to enjoy". As an artist I've experienced both aspects of this and I feel both are valid points... but I've also struggled with figuring out when and where one is more valid than the other.
It sucks that GW put the clamps on new Astartes works when fans have kept 40K going after all these years. But at the same time, it is their property, and the fact that they're a large company doesn't change that. Frankly, suppose their size does change the circumstances: if I had a great artistic idea and I managed to grow it into a multi-million dollar company, at what point did my art go from "I should be rewarded for my artwork" to "the art belongs to everyone"? Was it the moment I made money on it, or simply as soon as I put it out there into the world?
This isn't about defending GW's actions and more about a discussion about this concept of artistic ownership, maybe even tapping into "death of the author" (albeit focused more on ultimate ownership over ultimate meaning). It sucks that a large corporation can have that kind of power over an artistic property that we all love, but the powerful using their money to control art is a tale as old as time... consider that a lot of famous Renaissance paintings were commissioned art pieces paid for and owned by the rich and powerful of their time: does it continue to be owned by the family (assuming it was passed down through the generations) or do they now belong to the world?
@@nickfifteen Unfortunately it does belong to the people with the copyright ,that's the law but the company should of had more foresight than to just shut them off and let the fans see more . They should be more open as it is free advertising for them and that is where they should of been looking at it.
I agree, the makers of the live action need to watch and study this as a thesis in making the show. This is a tall order and if you make it right whoever you are, you will be loved by the gods!
This upscale is so fkn good, I can't put it into words

This SERIOUSLY needs to be a playable chapter in 40k GW please!!!!
They are the Retributors. It's an Imperial Fist founding. You can find some good lore videos about them on RUclips.
They’re an imperial fist successor, just find some rules that match em
2:08 funniest scene. best way to motivate your army.
The coolest damn animation on the planet. Exactly captures what bad asses space marines are and the sheer terror of the unknown. I don't know much about the lore of Warhammer but damn does this inspire me to get into it.
Get into it. I'm not a hardcore fan, but the lore is incredibly rich and expansive. 😊
The way they can trudge forward with such sure force the very millisecond they are able to after an attack, as if never losing momentum... It gives me goosebumps. Fucking scary they are. He seemed to be latched like a beast with teeth locked onto it's prey, sapping it's strength and will, waiting for that split second of weakness. It was so fucking brutal! Space Marine 2 needs to hurry up and come out god dammit, I already beat Boltgun and Space Marine a few times just waiting lol. My only gripe with the first that hopefully is fixed with the sequel is the ability to wear a fucking helmet, and hear that space marine voice. At least Boltgun got that right, in superb fashion lol
I need a 10 hour movie about what’s going on ! Is it a fan made cutscenes about a game? So dope
I would sit through a 10 hour movie
It was a fan made project. Unspecified marines and aliens. The creator was hired by Games Workshop.
very nice....I was waiting for someone to remove the unnecessary intros while still keeping the 8k👏👏
One man possessed something that multimillion dollar studios don't, passion.
Soooo good
I finished watching Weshammer and Bricky's Warhammer 40k lore videos, which were fucking great and now I'm watching this and enjoying it 💯.
man this looks super nice
Why did you have to change the colors? If its not broken, dont fix it. These are too oversaturated
My impression of this is that the Retributors are essentially Astartes distilled down to their purest form and are as close as we will get to the very first and original Astartes.
LOVE IT.
I don’t what I just watched but I freaking loved it!!!
You know, I think I like this version better.
The audio is much poorer on the first half, but the visual quality is stunning. I'm surprised this doesn't have more views.
Incredible except the audio for the sphere finale worked way better in the original.
Well I kinda liked that it was a little easier to understand than the original.
This is phenomenal ❤
This is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
Love the Astartes Animations and fan content, too bad GW is buying out all the fan animators and putting them on an NDA so they can't make anymore creations.
