Why MagSafe Charges So Slow
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2023
- MagSafe charging was introduced to iPhone 12 in 2020. The technology combined a QI wireless charging coil with a proprietary magnet array. Which allowed users to quickly attach their phone to a wireless charger without worrying about alignment issues. You may’ve noticed that while MagSafe is a little more convenient than a lighting cable, it takes longer to charge. And the reason has to do with the downsides to wireless charging technology.

My phone gets hot really fast when I charge with MagSafe
That’s really bad for your battery so just don’t use it
@@rodrirodriguez23957 I figured, I only charge it there when I’m on my desk. Majority of the time I use lightning, but I wonder if anyone else has that problem. I have a 14 pro max
Use the Belkin wireless charger instead of you just don’t want to use the cable.
Same. That goes for any wireless charging. Just use the cord it’s faster and stays cooler. Seems like even the 12w iPad charger takes about the same or faster than mag safe.
Not me. Wired charge killed my battery while my wireless charge prolong my battery. Sorry, I don’t agree. MagSafe for life
I like that you don't waste my time on these videos. Right to the point and lots of facts. Thanks you get a like
for real
It seems like using a wired charging cable would be better than wireless charging. You should only use wireless charging when you do not need to use your phone right away or as often.
also, having one at your work desk means you can just quickly put it on the charger, take it off, put it back without thinking, letting it keep a decent charge most of the day
It's about convenience vs efficiency.
You also want to keep your phone's battery in the "sweet zone" of 30-75% as much of the time as possible. That means charging it a little bit several times per day, and that's where plonking it down on a magnetic device is a lot more convenient and casual, than having to deliberately mess around with a plug.
Also over night is an obvious example
But MagSafe charging is far more convenient than wireless charging as it snaps on and align automatically.
You can even use the phone while it’s charging just like with wired, but is more convenient than wired since you can snap off the charger any time without getting snagged by the cable
@@damnfreakingsien Yes, so it fosters a tendency to feed small amounts of electricity to the phone very often, and that's good for long-term battery health.
I charge my 14 Pro Max using a 5W charger over night (magsafe). Enough time to charge with no rush and no heat. No super ultra fast charge neccessary. And I make it stop at 90%. My battery loves it and will live a long life.
It never saw 100% and it‘s a battery beast anyway. Lowest was 35% after a day. It‘s perfect!
Just curious, how do you make it stop at 90%? I can't find a setting for that
@@joeldowell5059 It’s not an iOS setting. I have the charger connected to an eve energy. You can use the shortcut app to set an automation: when the battery reaches 90%, the eve energy will turn off. So it stops charging 🙂
@@stefanmaurer8536 I'll have to look into that, thanks!
@@stefanmaurer8536 why? I use an apple 20w charger until my iPhone 13 Pro Max reaches 100% and when I go to sleep I unplugged it lol
@@harrychristofi6725 fast charging is not good for the battery health.
I use magnetic adaptors/cables to charge. It’s the best of both worlds. Far more convenient/faster, and interoperable with other plug styles too.

I would love to see a video about why so many of the apps on Apple TV run so terribly/have such poor ratings on the App Store
Exactly bro
might be people running them on the old HD TV which is very slow
@@alyx6427 He meant the Apple TV Box and not the Apple TV App for TVs ;)
Apple TV was using really old processors until the newest one so hopefully it’s at least somewhat better now. They run slow on my Apple TV too.
@@YogiTheBearMan also not true, you can’t compare these versions of the Apps to one’s on your phone or tablet because they have to be better optimised
I always charge my iPhone at night with MagSafe, is so convenient and don't care about time, it's just great!
I agree that,bro
Same!
Same! It can take all the time it wants during the night. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night to check time and it's at 80% and it waits until I'm about to wake up to fully charge to 100%. It's perfect
Same
I only use magsafe when it comes to powerbanks so I can charge it in my pocket, when I'm at home, I just plug in the cable, it's not that hard. Life is unexpected, it's best to try to be prepared
I recently switched to iPhone and I must admit I’ve never had a problem with MagSafe speeds. In fact I was pleasantly surprised lol
MagSafe is great for a nightstand and over night charging.
like a tesla....kinda cool if u think it that way
I really only charge my phone overnight, so I don’t really see this as a problem for me.
I use the Belkin wireless charging stand that charges the iPhone, the Apple Watch, and the Apple AirPods. I charge my iPhone on it and doesn’t seem to heat up compared to using it in general.
Thank you for the tidbit 😊
Thanks for useful information!
The Belkin 2-in-1 (yes it’s expensive at $99) solves the 15w drop off issue. It does sustained 15w charging and is the best one I’ve seen so far
But wouldn’t that mean it’s causing more wear and tear on the battery? It sounds like the Apple MagSafe chargers decrease the speed of charge when the iPhone starts to get really hot to protect it.
Also, just curious about that charging stand you mentioned... is it topheavy at all? Any concern it will fall over? It just looks like the iPhone is propped up pretty high and I didn’t know how solid and heavy the base itself is. It looks like if you tried to pull the iPhone off the stand would just try to come with the iPhone due to magnetism. Maybe the stand is heavier than I expect and it isn’t a problem though?
@@riffdex I have the Belkin 3 in one and iPhone 13 Pro Max, the phone falling is not an issue At all, the phone moving the stand kinda is, if you pull straight up it kinda lifts a bit Before releasing the phone, but if you pull any other way the bottom of the stand is rubbery so it holds to the surface
The wattage is determined by the phone, not the charger.
Nice placebo.
It’s what it would’ve been if Steve Jobs was around
Phones that have Magsafe usually have all day battery life unless you are a heavy user. So i charge my phone Magsafe at night and heating/slow charging is not an issue for me and I'm a decent user with about 6-7 hours of screen on time and usually end the day with about 30-40% charge.
It's speculated that Apple will ditch a charging port altogether in order to comply with the EU regulations ''on their own terms". They'll have to either massively improve wireless charging or admit defeat and switch to USB-C.
Exactly and it's not just only about charging. The whole USB-C ecosystem is just better. Want to connect a USB flash drive to your iPhone? Nope. On Android? Yep. Wanna use that USB-C to HDMI cable for your presentation? Nope. How about the Ethernet adapter? Out of luck. I'm working in IT and just for these reasons I have to carry a 2nd Android phone to compensate for the lack of iPhone connectivity. USB-C (or Thunderbold 3/4) is already fine for Macs, almost completely transition for iPad, so what's wrong with iPhone anyway? I just don't get it.
It is almost certain that we will get an USB-C iPhone this year. But a portless phone is definitely on Apple’s plans.
@@matt4054yt don’t understand how we can take these high MP pictures with huge file sizes and the phone is still using USB 2.0 SMDH
@@matt4054yt You're not right on this at all. Apple has sold adapters to allow SD cards and USB flash drives for many years now with both iPhone and iPad. I've had an HDMI adapter for years, again you're wrong on this. They also have ethernet adapters as well. Where are you getting your info!
@@matt4054yt what a load of shit lol, you're just saying things you want to be true without even lifting a finger to see if it's true. Lightning-type A usb flash drives, HDMI, ethernet, are all available. You have failed to realize that lightning is directly compatible with USB, and thus is also capable of doing anything USB 2.0 can do. Hell, if you're that desperate for USB C, theres even lighting to USB C adaptors.
Not saying usb c shouldn't be on iPhone, it's just that you're lying. That's all. Lies.

Most people didn't put a lot of thought behind charging tech because they charged their phone overnight.
But nowadays, people have become more aware that charging past 80% causes more battery damage, so they are often charging during the day only and this is the reason why we are seeing companies starting to provide faster charging solutions in their products.
How do you charge to 80%? With a 4 volt charger or babysit the phone.
@@David-jx4gw idk about apple, but for most modern android phones, it allows you to see how long it would take to reach to 100 from wherever your current percentage is, so you just make sure you take it off 15-20 minutes than it's suggestion
@@David-jx4gw the Battery Management System does monitor the voltage of the Battery and also modern Phones are learning how your using it so they keep themself at about 80% at night and start the charging process around the time you usually get up.
@@DarthG3nesis I don't think phones have any different battery charging system than any other lithium charger. Just charge to 4.2 volts and the charging slows down when the battery as the battery gets full because the resistance gets higher. My phone switches of at 3.5 volts when most other lithium devices cut offs are 3 volts, so there is not much point in charging at 20% instead of just using until flat. It does seem to to overcharge to 4.25 volts at 100%
@@DarthG3nesis the stopping charging at 80% and resuming in the morning seems a good idea. I charge my electric bike on an timer so as to try not to damage battery
I still use a lighting cable to charge my iPhone because I use a north face bubble case so the wireless charging doesn’t work without taking it of all the time.
Never really noticed myself. I tend to charge overnight or maybe a small amount during the day. Does me fine. I'll take the slower speeds over the extra convenience and no socket to wear.
Can you make a video to explain the optimised battery charging option found in iPhone battery settings?
There's MagSafe Chargers with Colling fans built in so it can keep your phone cool with that kind of MagSafe charger
I did an experiment on my iPhone 12 mini in using the magsafe vs. Cabled charging. I’ve notice that my iphone does heat up when charged on magsafe and it’s slow. I constantly charge my phone infront of a electric fan to help with the cooling. It’s not advisable as well using (ex. Listening to music) the phone while it’s charging at a magsafe (I use the wired earphones FYI) in the end I’d stick to wired charging because it’s faster and allows the phone to rest while charging.
I have both, the magafe does not like to always connect to my iPhone and i have to place it on the charger several times sometimes.... Yes its cool, and easy but the cord seems faster and more direct.
I don’t use a case and charge almost exclusively charge with the MagSafe charger on my bedside cabinet and I can honestly say I’ve not noticed slowness in charging
very good, the slower you charge your phone the longer battery lasts. I charge my phone during the night with Apple's 5W charger.
The only time I have to charge my 13 Pro Max is if I didn't charge it the previous night. The speed is not really a problem for me. If I need a quick charge, I use a cable and one of my many 20+W charging bricks.
I’m happy with my MagSafe charging slowly and SAFELY😌
MagSafe isn’t slow… it’s perfect
Also missing from the video is efficiency of wireless charging versus lightning. There is a power loss with wireless charging that does not occur with lightning charging.
Thanks for this i was thinking about getting an apple magsafe but i will just get belkin instead
Slower charging = keeping battery life longer.
More frequent charging too.

I use Anker magsafe powerbank 633. it produces less heat than another brands and also faster than the magsafe charger itself. while I can, I will use lightning cable, it is faster indeed & safer for phone battery lifespan.

I don't seem to experience any of the issues of slow charging with Magsafe. I use a 20W plug, magsafe with a Nomad stand. Zero complaints
I honestly use wireless charging only when I do not have the cable , due to the factor of heat, time and furthermore battery degration . It always better to use the cable
It's like the wireless chargers in a car
They don't charge, but if you want a warm phone you know where to go😂
Magsafe for me it’s pretty ok
Heatwise also is not bad
My iPhone 13 mini charges fast with MagSafe. Maybe because the mini has a small battery compared to regular sized iPhone battery’s?
Have tried it and there’s a time when I wake up to realized my phone isn’t 100% charged and getting too hot
iPhone 13 Pro here. A little over a year and I’m at 88% battery health. I only use wireless charging when I’m asleep at night.
Not an apple device user here does magsafe not have any cooling. No fan or heatsink? Ive used wireless chargers in the past and they have all had some sort of fan
What are you guys doing, wrapping the phone and the MagSafe charger in a blankie? I don't get these results at all, personally. My phone (and the charger) does get warm but it definitely doesn't get hot, and I always get a good 50% charge in 30 minutes. Now it does slow down some after that, so I'm sure that's when the 7.5 watt charging kicks in, but again my results are completely different for my 13 Pro.
Woah Qi pronounced so accurately
I charged my 13 mini only one wirelessly and all it did was get hot and not charge at all. Took only once for me to decide against it, with the cable it doesn't even get warm and charges

What is the name of the song in the background? I’ve always wanted to know but never found it 😢

This is why I use a 3rd party magsafe-compatible charger for charging overnight. Slower charging = less heat, so less damage to the battery.
But if I need fast charging, lightning cable every time.
How does charging at 20W does it in 30min for 50% and 7.5W in 60min? Shouldn’t it be 80min?

I use MagSafe roughly 95% of the time. iPhone 14 Pro Max is still at 💯 battery 🔋 capacity. In the car it’s slow in my 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander BUT it’s been convenient and because I charge when I can, I feel like a dead battery 🪫 really isn’t an issue with most modern smartphones, albeit, could be a challenge in a pinch. 🤷🏽♂️
I've used magsafe everyday over a year..it's faster than that, never stops at 80%, and way more convenient playing with phone while charging
I see a lot of comments saying the same thing here so I'll post some things that you all should know.
The whole "don't charge your phone to 100%" argument does not apply to modern technology anymore. It used to matter when battery optimisation and capacity were still being worked on, but if you have a modern iPhone, say X or higher, you don't need to bother to frantically unplug your charger before the ticker hits 100%. Yes, it does technically slow the ageing process of your battery, but the ageing is already so slow, if you just used it normally you really would not be able to tell the difference. The results you wanna see won't matter because after 2-3 years, your battery health will go down regardless of how little you charge your phone. At any point, to see any noticeable results it will take so long a time that the chemicals inside your battery will degrade either way, thus reducing your capacity through nothing but nature. Till then, only using 80% of your battery everyday so you can charge up to 95% of your battery 3 years later isn't exactly worth it, nor does it make any lick of sense.
Think about it this way, you hard limit yourself to use 80% of your battery, so that you can occasionally charge up to 95% a few years later? Why does it matter if you're just going to charge to 80% anyway? The difference between that 100% and 95% is so negligibly small that you will not even notice it by the time that number ticks down in your battery health indicator. Charge away, your phone is literally designed for it.
its only noticeable at around 85%, specifically 74% on my phone
