I Tried A Bunch of Magsafe Accessories: Here's Everything I Learned

  • Magsafe is the ring of magnets on the backside of every iphone starting with the 12 series. The magnetic ring enables you to attach anything that’s “magsafe” compatible to the back of your phone magnetically. So when it was released, Apple made a few accessories that use it, so that iphone users have an idea as to what to expect from magsafe type accessories. The most common magsafe accessories I’ve seen are chargers, wallets, mounts, and batteries.
    Belkin 3-in-1 BoostCharge Pro: amzn.to/3O10bsR
    Belkin Charging Stand: amzn.to/44WTOxQ
UCOMX Travel 3-in-1 charge pad: amzn.to/3pZ1D7b
    Anker Wireless Charging Cube: amzn.to/3q1A4KA
    Anker Magnetic Battery Pack: amzn.to/3O13YGB
    Belkin Magsafe Charger: amzn.to/3pX0vko
    Popsocket Wallet: amzn.to/3O1G9P1
    Stouchi Magsafe Camera Mount: amzn.to/44DTtQS
3-in-1 Charging station (Belkin Dupe): amzn.to/3Y07buM
    Apple Wallet: amzn.to/3K4Gcsf
    Apple Battery Pack: amzn.to/44yBz1D

Qi wireless charging is nice to have, you slap your phone on the charger and you're good. But it can be finicky, and to get the max charging speed it has to be in the exact right spot on the charging pad. That’s where Magsafe comes in. By linking the magnets, your phone and wireless charger can be perfectly aligned every time for the maximum charging speed. But that’s only if you have a magsafe charger like Apple’s or a magsafe charger that specifically states that it supports 15W charging for the iphone. Apple only allows magsafe chargers the ability to charge this fast, and not other qi chargers. And you may run into magsafe enabled chargers that only use the Qi standard instead of apple’s “fast charging”, which apple only allows to charge your phone at 7.5w. Half the speed of Magsafe.
There’s multi-device docking stations that charge more than your phone. The idea is to be able to charge your phone, apple watch, and airpods all at the same time without having wires dangling for all of them. This makes them perfect on night stands, desks, and side tables. I like this jumbled english no-name one because aesthetically it didn’t look like a weird tower sitting on your desk like many of the other ones, and because the magsafe puck can be stood up so that you can have your phone levitating and upright. Super useful if you want to start using your iphone on standby mode once iOS 17 releases. If you want the best charging speeds. I suggest the belkin 3-in-1 BoostCharge Pro charging pad. It looks nice, has fast charging, magsafe, and an apple watch charger. It's pricey, though.
Lastly, we have battery banks. The benefit of these is that you can slap them on your phone needing a cable to charge your phone, it will just magnetically stay on your phone. I haven’t tried too many of them, but Apple does offer a first party Magsafe battery pack that wirelessly charges the phone. That thing gives you the benefit of some iphone specific features that regular battery packs don’t have like telling how much charge is left, and charging your phone as it needs it, instead of being a dumb battery that’s on constantly and it can actually reverse charge back to the pack when your iphone is plugged in. But other manufacturers have created their own magsafe battery packs too. Like this MagGo magsafe battery bank from anker. This thing has a built-in flap that can become a kickstand, and still charge your devices through the usb-c port on the battery pack. It’s half the price of the Apple magsafe battery pack and lets you use the port to charge any device. While magsafe battery packs are cool, wireless charging is more inefficient compared to wired charging, so you don’t get the same amount of charge from a similar size battery pack.
I think Magsafe is a really convenient feature that can help you better keep your things attached to your phone, these are things you've already thought of doing, but it now enables you to quickly change out your accessory on the fly without the mess of adhesives, or removing tight fitting cases. Magsafe makes using accessories a little easier, and I hope it gets even better.

I honestly prefer the Apple MagSafe battery pack. It’s more of a extender than a charger and is better on your battery health as it doesn’t get as hot like Anker and other brands.

Having just upgraded from the XS to a 13 Mini, I’ve already got myself a few MagSafe items.
I’m not a lover of full cases so, since getting my XS, have been using a bumper and grip. The grip is now MagSafe., and I’ve got a matching car mount.
Plus, I have a MagSafe battery bank that doubles as a stand to trigger standby mode when I’m home.
I also got myself a MagSafe tripod to - among other things - film my friend’s band. However, with the 13’s added stability, i might just need to hold it.

The circular Belkin charger takes some effort to get it to stay standing, and the cord is kind of heavy and wants to pull the charger off the table. Oy. @@BobRossRightHand incorrect. The flip 5 case comes in 2 parts. The case that goes on the back when the phone is folded will have a circular magenta on it. That's all magsafe is my friend. A circular magnet.

Have used mag safe only since 2022. Had a work phone 13 pro for a year and gave it back at 100% battery health. Same thing with my 14 pro after 9 months when I quit that job. My personal 13 pro which has had little used, but right now after using it and charging it regularly since June of 2023 I am still at 100%. Apple figure out good wireless charging and it is nice. I used mag safe duo with the 30w charging brick that came with my MacBook.

Hello! Thank you for the video, I really like that Stouchi ring mount/holder... however, I don't have a Macbook but I use an Asus Tuf Dash 15, has a thicker display (about 6 mm) than a Macbook. Could anyone who has the mount tell me the clearance for the display for the mount, if possible? I doubt that the mount will fit on my laptop...

I’m dipping back into tech after being pseudo-semi off the grid for about a decade so I am not sure if that’s a common reference. But the “Mad Catz quality” label was such a perfect description of second party products at the height of the iRevolution

I love the anker cube, but I don’t think it is a good travel charger. That thing is properly heavy and I wouldn’t want to lug around an extra half a kilo of a charging brick when a few cables will do. It is a great option for a desk though. The thing supports fast charging and I can charge three devices at once. Costs the same as the belkin and comes in a sleeker packaging.

The peak design magsafe wallet is way better than the apple one. magnetic flap to hold your cards that when you pull on pulls all your cards up for easy access. It also has room for at least 100% more cards.

    • @Zorena
      @Zorena 9 месяцев назад

I agree the Peak Design is great! My only complaint is that the magnet is not very strong and the wallet detaches with minimal force. I contacted Peak Design customer service thinking it was a defective product but was told that it’s normal and not a design flaw and once I tested other MagSafe wallets with my phone I realized that it is indeed normal for MagSafe magnets to not be very strong.

I’m really excited for a second generation MagSafe battery pack. With no more mini iPhone the size should (hopefully) jump up to fit the 6.1” models, giving greater capacity. Plus I would expect USB-C. Helpful video since I will be upgrading from 11 :)

i feel like they can improve the battery technology instead of straight-up excluding the mini iPhones. sure, they didn’t sell very well but doing that would probably lead to a whole lot of third party products making their accessories far too big for the minis too. i also think that having twice the thickness of the iPhone 13 Pro would be really hard to hold.

I'd say faster charging via actual MagSafe speeds is not worth it especially if you're trying to do overnight charging. You're better off with the slower speeds generating less heat and since you're sleeping through it anyways, it won't matter by the end of the night. I think it only really helps for MagSafe powerbanks, though the damage of the higher heat could potentially be worse for a portable battery pack. I just feel you're going to need to top up much quicker on the go, and if you're in a set place, you can always turn to wired charging. Currently using the Anker 633 with my S23+ (and previously on my S9 with an added ring). I got it early since it was one of the only reliable brands that had a MagSafe powerbank with a built-in stand on it. That stand makes it so much easier to prop up the phone to watch content on tables while eating out or just chilling in the office. I am considering getting a faster one and giving it to my dad rocking the 14 Pro Max, but one feature I'm looking for on top of faster speeds (to match Android's default Qi max) is the ability to just mount the phone without it charging wirelessly.

I honestly will never go back to using my phone without my MagSafe pop socket. And I charge overnight on a not made for MagSafe charger and don't personally care that the speed is limited - for overnight charging I prefer it that way. Have been pretty much exclusively wirelessly charging my phones since my XR and have had zero problems. Also apples MagSafe battery bank is honestly great... overpriced but great. I bought a much cheaper (not MagSafe certified) one before I took the leap and only used it a couple times because it got HOT but have never had that issue with the apple one.

Thanks for this. As silly as this sounds I can survive just of a MagSafe battery pack (Apple version). I use an iPad daily and so not a power phone user. Like the simplicity of it…. I finish most days with 20% to 30% on my 13 Mini and then just leave it on battery pack overnight and that’s enough for the next day
