But due to manufacturing nuances, many batteries end up with an "overcapacity," like 4729 mAh (~109% health). I work in R&D for a medical company, and we see similar battery capacity variations. It's a bit of a "battery lottery." Side note: Many have noticed the iPhone 14's quicker battery health decline. It's a topic worth investigating further. Your wireless charging point is valid. It can be less efficient than wired. Every 1% delivered through a cable might be 0.8% wirelessly, but with similar wear. This impacts battery longevity. To get a clearer picture, tools like CoconutBattery can reveal if your device began with overcapacity.
I have iPhone 11 at 75% but still seem to rarely have a low battery problem (except when using on GM on a long journey and forget to plug it in, or an extended period of video watching)
Great info ... I adjusted a few settings after your description of what they did - Thank you! I have not had issues with battery life. I have modified charging time ... I do not typically charge overnight. I work from a home office and it is generally convenient to allow battery to drain to 30% and below and then charging as I am working during the day. BUT, I also have an Apple watch (Ultra) so I am not dependent on the phone for calls/messages/emails. Still, I like to keep my phone 2-3 years so understanding battery health is important to me.
Honestly, I bought a 10000 mAh power bank and carry it all the time in my daily backpack, and this act really removed my battery anxiety! I mean, I am no longer worried about the battery when I am outside
I was slightly surprised you didn't address slow charging vs fast charging and also optimal charge range levels to maintain battery health. After watching the video I can see that quite a few data related settings will depend on your choice of mobile service provider.
We know he lives in 🇬🇧 because… 0:50. For anyone not in 🇬🇧, there’s a blistering heatwave in Europe but not in the U.K. where, as his phone shows, it’s cold and wet. Yesterday (22/7/23), the lowest recorded temperature was 35°F (1.6°C) in Scotland (at night, of course)!
I’m a little late, but fast vs slow charging doesn’t affect battery health. Heat is one of the biggest contributing factors, as long as fast charging isn’t generating any extra heat, it’ll degrade at the same rate as slower charging would.
yeah but fast charging generates more heat right? i have an anker charger and its hot af, compared to using a 7.5watt samsung charger.(with an anker lightning cable) So maybe only use fast charging when you really need it.
@@geraldct46803 it doesn’t matter if the charger itself gets hot or not, just your phone. If your phone stays cool to the touch at 50watt charging (for example) your battery will degrade at the same rate as charging at 5watt would.
This is a great video, and I appreciate you for it. Just upgraded my beloved XR to a 14, and wanted to do what I can to preserve battery life. I had many of these recommendations set already, but there were many I hadn’t known about or considered. I also owe you a big thank you for teaching me about how iOS will dim bright whites a bit, and warn of strobe effects. I have seizures, and strobe/bright lights can be a trigger for me. I operate with Night Shift on as well, as my eyes are so sensitive to the blues without it on. Just… so many thanks!!! ❤
As a musician, having a piano app on my phone can occasionally come in handy. Following your advice I learned that this app is a huge battery hog! I rarely use it, but it seems to be very busy in the background. Thank you.
You forgot to mention that background app refresh is very important to have data synched between devices, like spreadsheets in numbers or photos taken on the phone appearing on the iPad.
But most apps that sync stuff will still do that even without background app refresh. Even when it’s turned off, iOS doesn’t block all background activity all the time.
I went though the tips you had with my brand new iPhone 15 pro max. And omg it hasn’t left 100% for hours. You’re amazing and your tips are wonderful. Thank you so much
Dim Flashing Lights uses the Neural engine to detect content so it might use more battery in the process. Disabling System Customization and Significant Locations will also stop Optimized Battery Charging from working. In addition to Reduce Motion, you might want to turn on Reduce Transparency as well.
You’re not the only one feeling smug about the battery being 100%. I don’t think it was the charger in your car but more to do with an update. Around the same time my update started to destroy my battery, knocking my iPhone 14 pro now down to 90%. I have a shortcut set up that lowers my screen brightness at a really low setting for in the house then slightly boosts it around 9am when daylight.
We have to remember that the wireless charging system is simply a couple RF coils, some filters, some control, rectification (and maybe smoothing) and finally regulation before it enters the charging chip. It’s got to be a little thermal wasting the induction coils and all those semiconductors producing all that heat, but I also agree with the update.
Couldn’t agree more about the floodgates opening! My battery health was at 100% up until 8 months after purchase now at 13 months it all the way down to 90%! 😢
I just subscribed to your channel… loving your content and delivery… clear, down to the facts … no unnecessary padding to have to wade through to get to the point ! Appreciated 🙏🏻
perhaps true, but then again the iphone 5 was all the phone most of us needed anyways. you can call and text, use a calculator and clock, access the internet and watch movies or videos, listen to music, have a good camera for photos and videos, game on it, it has a flashlight, etc. really that’s good enough lol. how many of us actually need a lidar scanner, you know? still love all those cool features though
I loved my iPhone 6S and would still have it but the charger port failed so now I upgraded to an iPhones 8 cost only 95€ 256gig new battery does more than I need if I break it so what cheaper than the cheapest android
I’d like to say that the Battery health in battery settings is a misconception of sorts. It tells you what your battery charges up to even when you think it’s at 100% and sometimes that can be wrong. To find out go to privacy and security and scroll down to Analytics and Improvements (this needs to be on for a few days). Click on that then open Analytics Data. Click on the first Analytics. Then click on the top right with the square and arrow pointing up. In the pop up menu click on PowerUtil Another menu will pop down. Then click allow once. This will give you better info.

I’m with optimized charging enabled, but I’ve never seen that pause thing. My phone is less than a month old, so I believe it’s still learning, but I have my sleep schedule programmed but some nights, when I wake up to get some water I look to my phone and it’s 100% already. Same thing in the graph, it charges to 100% and keeps it that way
I got my iPhone 15 a few days ago and one of the features is that you can limit the charging so it will not charge past 80%. Every once in a while, it will charge to 100% to maintain stability and capacity.
1. Turn on optimised battery charging 2. Turn low power mode on 3. Turn off animated wallpaper (astronomy) 4. Turn on dark mode 5. Turn off always on display 6. Set auto lock mode between 30sec - 1minute 7. Turn off auto brightness 8. Reduce white point 9. Turn on reduce motion 10. Turn on dim flashing lights 11. Turn off auto play video 12. Turn on limit frame rate 13. Turn off raise to wake 14. Turn on notification summary 15. Turn off background app refresh 16. Set voice and data to the limit your are ok with 17. Set data mode to low 18. Turn on wifi assist 19. Turn off push mail 20. Turn of share iphone analytics 21. Set auto trader to never 22. Enable some location for system services 23. Turn keyboard feed back off 24. Remove unnecessary widegets Like to me too ❤
That’s actually impossible. My 14 pro displays 100 and when I actually check in my iPhones actual analytics where you can see the charge cycles and actual battery capacity it’s at 96. So yours was probably closer to 85-90%. Batteries degrade no matter how much care you take.
Why would you worry that much about battery health? You can get it replaced by Apple for around 80 bucks. When it reaches around 85-80% just get it replaced. I know you could save that money by taking care of it but is it really worth having to stress over your battery degrading?
reduce white point is a crazy function. And until now, I neither knew that one nor that I could deactivate Auto Brightness. Since switching from Android, that was one of the things I hated. Now I can decide myself how I want the brightness, that's so dope, thank you!!!!
18:00 I nearly disabled everything. Now I'll decide in the next days if I want to let it like now or if I'll change it. But that's also a dope function!
Best feature I’ve found for saving almost 100% of battery usage while it’s enabled? Turn your phone off. This has the useful side effect that you might get a life. But each to their own. It can also reduce damaging posture strain while walking and exercise important senses while monitoring your environment, potentially avoiding accidents and damage and inconvenience to other environment users.
I wish that was an option. My job requires me to have a phone on me 24hrs a day. 😢. I am also certainly not a millennial although it I wouldn’t mind being a bit younger. 😂
Thanks for the advice! My iPhone 13 has had a significantly worse time in terms of Battery Life on iOS 17 so I did most of these tips. Reduced Motion was the one thing that I turned on like suggested but changed back because of how important it seems to be for me after knowing how it is with it off
What I also recommend is using a slow 5 Watt charger if you charge the phone overnight. Because then charging speed doesn‘t matter and the phone gets slowly charged and the phone doesnt get as hot etc
iOS already takes care of that automatically. If you're charging overnight, it will stop charging at 80%, and slowly charge to 100% by the time you wake up.
This may prolong battery life, but I feel like it's unnecessary to sacrifice the phone's features for its longevity. Newer Phones these days have battery life that could last more than the previous generations, plus with software enhancements, you can expect your phone to last for years. Aside from that, great video as always!
Yes! One should fully utilise their phone without worrying much. If the battery health falls down you after a couple of years you can get it replaced cheaply as well.
A lot of work went into this one! Having traded in my 6s for an iPhone 15, I had a lot of features to review, evaluate and decide which to try, which to keep. You provided me a great, measured, survey of battery boosters, but also features all new to me. Well played! Unfortunately, after tweaking settings I had unappealing colors. Time to research how to restore the original colors. Thanks very much!
I watched this video on the day you released it then again a few times and played around with settings. Aside from a day with lots of calls and a video call , I have not needed to charge my phone aside from the night time charge. Beforehand I had to top it up. I’m using an IPhone 13 mini 1 year old battery health 89%. Thank you!!!
Thanks for these. First time to use an IPhone. You mentioned that your battery health was reduced when you use a wireless charger in your car. I just bought a wireless charger and a wireless powerbank for my iPhone. Will these devices ruined or destroy my battery?
I went extreme with this, by creating some automations in Shortcuts to keep Low Power mode on constantly. As such I get 2-3 days between charges on my iPhone SE 3rd gen. And I've not noticed any negative impact for how I use my phone, because I don't want alerts on email receipt. I prefer to check my email only when I'm away from my computer and have the time to do so, so I don't need email activity constantly in the background. I still receive my text Messages as and when they are sent by the other party, so this is the one thing which would have been a deal breaker for me, but thankfully is not a problem with Low Power mode. The Shortcuts automations to achieve this were: 1. When battery falls below 100%, set Low Power mode to ON. and 2. When Low Power mode is turned OFF, set Low Power mode to ON. I also have Shortcuts automations to switch WiFi and Bluetooth OFF when I am away from home and then switch them back on when I am near or at home. I don't use WiFi or Bluetooth outside of home, so why leave those radios ON?
Excellent Tips. It definitely made a difference with my battery usage. I found White point on 45% to be the sweet spot. Disabled Reduce Motion after about 30 mins though. Phone is just not as “fluid” with it enabled.

Thank you so much for the reducing white point one, i suffer from migraines and sometimes i cant even bear to look at my phone even when i lower the brightness all the way down, but after enabling it, it is way better and doesn't hurt my eyes
I got my iphone 15 pro max last month only. I follow the necessary factors that will help to prolong and maintain the battery life but i was dismayed yesterday it dropped to 99%.
Personally, I’ve been using an iPhone 13 Pro Max for two years now, and recently, I started having issues with low battery life, needing to charge two or even three times a day. However, after setting up an automation where low power mode turns off when I connect my phone to charge and turns back on when I disconnect, it’s made a significant difference. Now, my phone easily lasts the whole day on a single charge!
Excellent video. In addition to learning about battery life options, I learned what some of the options in setting are intended to do! Very helpful as Apple’s explanations always leave me scratching my head. 😊
@@tt_-oy2rj I just charge it when it reaches 28-30% and stop charging when its at 93% and I only use the apple round charging system never via the phone connection. Just checked the max capacity and it is saying 99% so I must be doing something correct
Hi. I just wanted to say thank you for this video. I used some of these tips and what a difference it made on my iPhone 14 pro’s battery life. Now it lasts all day long and when I’m going to bed and put it on the charger it usually still has 30% or more battery life.
I activate low power mode at 30% through a automated shortcut - if I’ve used 70% for the day I’ve had a good run and welcome the minimal extra saving if I’m out and about late in the evening.
Thanks, bought a used 11 and I plan to return it but need to use it until I get my new phone, it's health is 77% so I enabled quite a few of your tips, hoping to reduce charge-anxiety, lol. thanks
The problem with having Battery Health below 80% is that the battery may end up quickly discharging after it reaches a lower level of charge. On some of my past iPhones, the battery charge would suddenly drop from 20-25% down to 2% when the Battery Health was below 80%.
Best Video out there, Thanks to you for always letting us know about a few consequences preset there behind every setting, This really stands you apart from others!
Zero points for origninality since every battery saving video out there has the same list of settings to change. 100 points for presentation as your videos are always a pleasure to watch. How you speak in a constant warm tone and present the infographics is really good. 👍
Tom, at the very beginning you said your cars wireless charger has cooked your phone and this resulted in 2% battery health drop. So would you discourage people from using wireless chargers instead, including Apple Magsafe charger? How do you normally charge your phone?
When I bought my iPhone 12 I bought a wireless charging stand. I noticed that that back of the phone got very hot while charging and after a couple of days gave up using it. Now I only charge to 80%, have an automation to tell me when it's reached it, and with the face down so the back can keep as cool as possible, considering the plastic case the phone is in.
I've also got the iPhone 14 Pro, my battery was at 100% health until some time in June and its also dropping steadily since, down to 94%. Anyone would think it is timed so as you buy a new phone in September!
@@farzadjahanfard I turned off the use wifi when signal is weak and I think that has helped me a little, albeit its dropped to 92%. Google Pixel Fold on order, i'm going to try a move away from Apple
Wow, this is an incredibly comprehensive guide! Thanks for taking the time to compile all these battery-saving tips. I'm particularly interested in the "Scheduled Summary" for notifications - that sounds like a game-changer for managing my overwhelming notification overload. I'm curious to hear from other users about their experiences with some of these settings, especially the always-on display. I've been debating turning it off, but I do find the convenience helpful sometimes. Has anyone found a good balance between using always-on display and preserving battery life? Or is it a complete on/off situation? Share your experiences! Also, I'm intrigued by the "Reduce White Point" setting. How noticeable is the color difference at, say, 50% reduction? Is the battery life improvement significant enough to justify the slightly less vibrant display?
My iPhone 13 Pro Max is now 30 month old and my battery health still 89% my secret (or not) is I charge it daily when my battery percentage still above 50% this way it counts as half of a full charge. I’m really happy with my latest iphone not only because of the battery but overall especially performance is great as well as picture and video quality is top notch for me. Please tell me if anyone else having great experience with their iPhone as well.
Excellent video thanks. Reviewed all the settings for my first gen SE - which as you can imagine has limited battery life in 2023 - and it is now doing much better especially the background drain when it’s not actually in use. Should be good for another 4 years now 😉
I’ve just replaced my 2018 iPhone X that was still on 80% battery capacity even though I constantly used wireless charging in the car and I used to charge it to 100% every night. I hope the battery in my new iPhone 16 lasts as well!
Fantastic and very informative video again, thank you so much! To me one of the worst things you can do is actually QI charging. Especially in cars, I'm afraid they are real battery killers. I just updated to a 14Pro and I now refrain from QI chargers and use a good old cable. One question you might be able to give an answer to: I have lots of open tabs in Safari on my iPhone (140) is that as well a battery drainer, or are they only activated when tapping on the tab? Thanks 🙏🏻
it's okay to have many open tabs. your phone will put them into standby mode and then activate the tab that you're using. so only activated when tapping on the tab 👍
Do you have a video covering iPhone accessibility features? I knew a lot of these, but I know there are so many more! You point out some features in your videos, but it would be helpful to have them all together. Thanks
It would be awesome if apple just had a “extreme battery saver” button like android and it turns all this extra stuff off. One other feature I recommend is to take your phone into airplane mode when you can. For example. Do you need to be connected while you are having lunch? Or in a meeting? Use your judgement. Finally, I’ve set up a shortcut that reminds me to unplug my phone when it reaches 80%. And it reminds me to charge when at 25%. Finally, being in low power mode for most of the time is the biggest improvement. Great video.
Best way to improve battery health is to use the phone less. Has the byproduct of extending your brain health. Also, 24/7 Do Not Disturb. I check messages when I want to, not when they ding me at all hours of the day.

Fast charging doesn’t degrade battery as long as you keep the phone cool
Thank you.
There’s no reason for an app like that to do anything in the background. It’s either badly written or it’s sketchy or both.
Thanks!
Thank you so much
Wow I should try it out then 😅
Excellent as usual-explained in plain language making everything straightforward.
Dim Flashing Lights uses the Neural engine to detect content so it might use more battery in the process. Disabling System Customization and Significant Locations will also stop Optimized Battery Charging from working. In addition to Reduce Motion, you might want to turn on Reduce Transparency as well.
I have to admit that this is the best battery saver video I’ve ever seen. Thanks a lot. 💙
Glad you liked it!
Agreed
I never looked in such depth into my phone before ! Your explanations are so clear, so thanks, Cheers and enjoy the coffee :)
Did u install the beta ios 17 , my 14 pro has been with me for seven months and its 100%, if u didn’t then ur phone usage is high
Wireless charging is a battery killer due to the heat it causes .
What are y'all doing with your phones ? I have a 14 pro max for a year now and I am a heavy user (medical school) and my battery life ks at 98% 😂

True!
perhaps true, but then again the iphone 5 was all the phone most of us needed anyways. you can call and text, use a calculator and clock, access the internet and watch movies or videos, listen to music, have a good camera for photos and videos, game on it, it has a flashlight, etc.
really that’s good enough lol. how many of us actually need a lidar scanner, you know? still love all those cool features though
Is PowerUtil an app that you have to download? It doesn’t pop up when i press the square with the up arrow in the top right corner 🤔
I don’t have any option for PowerUtil. Is that another app installed on your iPhone?
@@EverythingCameFromNothing As far as I can tell it’s not because of any of my apps. I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max with the latest update. I do know I didn’t have PowerUtile a while back ago.
1. Turn on optimised battery charging
2. Turn low power mode on
3. Turn off animated wallpaper (astronomy)
4. Turn on dark mode
5. Turn off always on display
6. Set auto lock mode between 30sec - 1minute

If you want to keep your battery as long as possible , charge it between 60 and 80% , my 11pro went nearly 18 months before dropping to 99% .
That’s actually impossible. My 14 pro displays 100 and when I actually check in my iPhones actual analytics where you can see the charge cycles and actual battery capacity it’s at 96. So yours was probably closer to 85-90%.
Batteries degrade no matter how much care you take.
Keep on dreaming and believing into your own lies. Pro models having the most bad battery's of all..
This doesn’t sound very probable
Why would you worry that much about battery health? You can get it replaced by Apple for around 80 bucks. When it reaches around 85-80% just get it replaced. I know you could save that money by taking care of it but is it really worth having to stress over your battery degrading?
Would you recommend setting up charge to 80% or is just battery optimisation enough? Thank you
If you really want to maximize how long your battery will last until you need to replace it, then you shouldn’t ever charge it beyond 80%.
reduce white point is a crazy function. And until now, I neither knew that one nor that I could deactivate Auto Brightness. Since switching from Android, that was one of the things I hated. Now I can decide myself how I want the brightness, that's so dope, thank you!!!!
NOTIFICATION SUMMARY IS SUCH A NICE FEATURE, WHY DIDN'T I EVER SEE IT???
Apple. That had to be advertised!
But well, thank you for showing!!!!!
18:00 I nearly disabled everything. Now I'll decide in the next days if I want to let it like now or if I'll change it. But that's also a dope function!
27:14 that was a lot of important indormation. Now I gotta do the same on my iPad Pro hehe
Overall: THANK YOU!
Great tips, I've applied a few. Now to see what difference it makes on my iPhone SE
Wow thanks a million for your valuable time Tim 🙌🏼
Best feature I’ve found for saving almost 100% of battery usage while it’s enabled? Turn your phone off. This has the useful side effect that you might get a life. But each to their own. It can also reduce damaging posture strain while walking and exercise important senses while monitoring your environment, potentially avoiding accidents and damage and inconvenience to other environment users.
Underrated comment. 😂
Ha ha you ain’t joking mate, the millennials have basically turned into phone zombies.

Reduced Motion was the one thing that I turned on like suggested but changed back because of how important it seems to be for me after knowing how it is with it off
Appreciate your efforts and time to help us with these suggestions and walk through ;) I just got my first iPhone and this was a big help, cheers!
What I also recommend is using a slow 5 Watt charger if you charge the phone overnight. Because then charging speed doesn‘t matter and the phone gets slowly charged and the phone doesnt get as hot etc
Charging to and sitting at 100% isn't good for battery health . If you can keep it to 80% , your battery will last a lot longer .
iOS already takes care of that automatically. If you're charging overnight, it will stop charging at 80%, and slowly charge to 100% by the time you wake up.
Thanks always enjoyed your content. So clear, concise and very informative! 😊
Your videos are always easy to understand and informative! Thanks.
Just don’t use the phone battery life improves greatly lol.
Optimising battery got me crazy. How often I had to deactivate it because I needed it for work.
So sometimes it can be a curse using this option.
Thank you for helping people like me with an iPhone se 2016! I’m at 100% health, but it doesn’t last long. At some point I’ll get an iPhone 13 mini!
Great video ….. i have set all of them …. The best part is the Time stamps and a systematic approach
Excellent Tips.
It definitely made a difference with my battery usage. I found White point on 45% to be the sweet spot. Disabled Reduce Motion after about 30 mins though. Phone is just not as “fluid” with it enabled.
Excellent, thanks very much. I also appreciate your calm speed at which you present the information. You speak clearly and take your time. It's not like you have a plane to catch like so many other RUclipsrs.
Outstanding advice! The PDF option is mandatory, IMO.
I remembered that I can switch off background refresh just today! So happy!
I had the same problem. Used a belkin Qi charger at my parents. Phone was super hot and then next day 98 percent. Thanks for the tips!

I would like to schedule when my battery stays at 80% or charges entirely to 100% since my schedule can vary daily.
This was very comprehensive nice job partner 👏🏼

What you do to keep 95?
I don’t use my phone to that often. If I turn low power mode when not used would it “hurt” battery in the long term?
Zero points for origninality since every battery saving video out there has the same list of settings to change. 100 points for presentation as your videos are always a pleasure to watch. How you speak in a constant warm tone and present the infographics is really good. 👍
Thanks - but did you expect me
to invent new settings on the iPhone nobody has ever seen before?
Tom, at the very beginning you said your cars wireless charger has cooked your phone and this resulted in 2% battery health drop. So would you discourage people from using wireless chargers instead, including Apple Magsafe charger? How do you normally charge your phone?
When I bought my iPhone 12 I bought a wireless charging stand. I noticed that that back of the phone got very hot while charging and after a couple of days gave up using it. Now I only charge to 80%, have an automation to tell me when it's reached it, and with the face down so the back can keep as cool as possible, considering the plastic case the phone is in.
