Why Walmart Doesn't Accept Apple Pay

  • Apple Pay was introduced in 2014 and is now accepted by 85% of US retailers. But the country’s most popular store, Walmart, is missing from that list. And it’s because they have a payment system of their own. It started with CurrentC. A company created by a group of retailers, including Best Buy, Target, and Walmart.

I'm from the UK and this has blown my mind. I don't think I've ever been in a shop (besides small, local ones) that doesn't accept contactless/Apple Pay. The fact that you need to give away a load of your personal info just to shop there is a huge red flag to me. In my opinion it should not be allowed to track purchases and gather information, unless you give them permission via the use of a separate points app or something (like we have here)

I think a reason is, that in europe credit card fees are limited by law. Some smaller shops in germany do not accept credit cards, but accept german debit cards, because the fees are limited to 0.5 €. That is a reason why many shops accept card payments only above a certain ammount.

  • @themutedoutcasts
    @themutedoutcasts Год назад +2485

While credit card processing fees could be another reason on the list for Walmart I can confidently say it's definitely because it doesn't allow them to collect people's data. I used to work with credit card processing, when I tell you each individual Walmart processes MILLIONS on the daily from credit card transactions I am not kidding. Not just that, their processing fees percentages are often discounted too, they always tended to be lower than for other businesses. Fees are not the issue. Their unquenchable hunger for your data to market to you and sell it to third parties is the problem.

This very excellently said. Many people don't know specific person data is one of the most valuable if not the most valuable commodity there is. What a billion people can be predicted to be enticed to buy on a weekly and daily basis is a pure cash machine. Apple is an oddity in this regard as they collect very little specific person data. To be sure, Apple does collect a lot of data in the form of anonymized data. This is not specific to a name but is collected as a general geo area and demo group data. This is valuable but is is not close to the value of the specific to the person data. And this specific to the person data is trying to be vacuumed up by almost every place someone frequents, most definitely including Walmart.

Samsung Pay was special in most markets because it worked by emulating the magnetic strip of a credit card (MST) rather than using NFC to process payments, meaning older card readers with no contactless option could still be paid using your phone and no physical card, so theoretically that should work at Wal-mart too. Key word is theoretically, as it turns out Wal-mart actually explicitly blocks Samsung Pay transactions and your payment will be declined if you try this at a register (I know from experience). Unfortunately Samsung has also since dropped MST from modern phones so now there's no reason not to use Google Pay on their phones.

So when Apple Pay came out the system was already there to use and a lot of chain stores disabled blink after Apple Pay was announced because Apple Pay used to the same magic wand type of way to scan you digital card.

    It was really great.
But Apple (who was way late to the party) had to be Apple and brand their NFC payment offering "Apple Pay" instead of the already established "Tap to pay", suddenly the those handful of retailers who eventually joined CurrentC all slowly turned off their NFC functionality in their terminals.
They all tried their QR code based nonsense, which had a high failure rate, then a couple years later, they just jettisoned the CurrentC crap and turned the NFC back on in their payment readers.

The EU and member countries are starting to regulate this and forcing the EV charging providers to make CC readers (at least contactless) available.
Here in the U.S. any company that accepts NEVI federal funding will have to do the same (yep, even Tesla). Their v4 chargers are just now starting to appear with pay terminals and screens. This will help for CCS vehicles that don't support Tesla's (currently proprietary) plug & charge.

I remember my first contactless payment back in 2011 at taco cabana, they really thought I hacked into the machine. Used the Nexus S

Since I have a Samsung, samsung pay has a feature where it can emulate the magnetic strip so if you hold the phone to where you would swipe it, paying with samsung pay even though it doesn't support nfc

I find this so weird being from the UK where literally everywhere accepts contactless and Apple Pay and I regularly go out without a wallet, only my watch and phone

It’s funny to see how the same payment methods differ between countries.
If I understand correctly in the US the shop owner can pick and choose what brands/systems they’re gonna use (provide to the customer).
Here in the Netherlands there is only one choice: you provide electronic payments or not . There’s only wham logo on the machines and that’s the general contactless payment symbol. So you can hold your card next or on top of the device to pay, same goes for Apple Pay it’s basically mimicking the bank card. The option to use the chip by inserting your card in de machine is also still provided.
But shop owners can’t say I don’t want apple or google pay. The only way they could do that is by blocking the contactless payment all together. And I’m not even sure if that’s an option. And all the machines come with that contactless technology.

I have a Samsung, and all the way up to the S20, all of the flagships have MST built in
MST is a Samsung pay proprietary feature that tricks a non NFC terminal into thinking you swiped your card , allowing you to use your phone at places like Walmart
It confuses cashier's every time I use it on my S20 Ultra 5G

In Australia, everywhere that excepts card, excepts Apple Pay. We have had contactless payments for years, since 2006. So when Apple Pay was released, it has been automatically accepted everywhere that accepts card. I don't bring my wallet or card anywhere with me anymore, just my phone, because I know that a store that accepts card (which is literally every store) is guaranteed to accept Apple Pay.

Recently I have been trying to phase Walmart out of the stores I use/frequent because I’m am one of those idiots who lose things easily. Lost two wallets, one had my card in it so I’m thankful that contactless is a way for me to not bring it out.
The problem is Walmart sells a large variety of things and If I need a bunch of stuff, It makes sense to go to one store then spend extra the petrol for 3 stores.

Older generation samsung phones used to be able to give off a signal that was the equivalent of a magnetic strip on a card so you could do contactless payments almost anywhere whether or not they accepted NFC payment. Unfortunately they got rid of that

Here in Chile we don't have Apple Pay yet, but it is expected to roll out in the coming months, or at least within 2022. It'll be interesting to see whether Walmart here will jump on the Apple Pay bandwagon or not.

Home Depot refuses _any_ tap-to-pay (Apple or otherwise) for similar reasons. Even if you have the app, the store credit card, and a Pro Xtra account, you still can't _tap_ to pay with your phone (but you can have an in-app barcode scanned as a payment method instead).
