This was the former HP Cupertino site. I worked there in the late 80s and 90s. It had many of the same features - open courtyards, large theater, central employee restaurant. It was very square and linear. Everyone, including senior executives, worked in cubicles. When it was built, it incorporated many new design and workplace ideas that were novel at the time. As befit the HP corporate culture, it was much more modest in its materials than its Apple successor. I loved working there, especially having meetings outside in the large open courtyards. HP was a special company.

To get from point a. to b. you have to go way around…also since every part of the structure is surrounded by light Tim chose to have no cubicals and everyone must work standing up looking toward the curved windows…unless in conference rooms…
I actually think it's kind of ugly. It's certainly impressive because of it's sheer scale, and I appreciate how the building puts itself into the background and lets nature talk. The building itself is rather dull though. I dislike modern architecture in general but 4 white circles stacked on top of each other is especially uninspiring, other modern buildings at least go all-out on the parametric design. With a 5 billion dollar budget I'm sure you could have done better. Though if you're driving past apple park you see almost nothing of the ring so I guess it doesn't really matter how a building looks like if you never have to look at it from up close. In the video they mentioned inspiration taken from oxford university--now that's a good looking compound. Not that I ever imagined apple building a historicist HQ and of course they have different constraints, like maximizing natural light coming in etc. Still, apple park is like, just another run-of-the-mill office building, I'm not sure what everyone is raving about. I'm sure it's nice on the inside and it has plenty of amenities but the building itself doesn't deserve the praise it's getting.

Apple: Everyone is crammed into the same dining area, forcing interaction Introverts: Not if I bring my lunch and eat at my desk every day for the rest of my life. Challenge accepted.
I prefer the approach Microsoft was taking to buildings when I worked for them in the late 1980s. Rather than a distracting open office plan, everyone got their own office. Rather than consign the outside views to the short time someone is walking down a hall, each office had a window on a wooded outside, either inside the ring or outside. The windowless areas were where people spend little time-halls, storage areas, refreshment areas, and conference rooms. And there was also another difference. Rather than one huge building, there were a number of them, making work more intimidate.
I’m an architecture student and this is my favorite building, I think what people criticize is exactly what make it special, if it wasn’t extravagant or perfect enough, they wouldn’t have make the calculations and the work to achieve that “floating roof” of the theater or the huge sliding doors, sometimes perfection is good
If this building enabled Apple to create such dope marketing material and transitions for their Events, I think it should be the first example to be shown to students of Architecture, so they understand the importance of place and space

Since, I have never own anything, made by Apple. I personally think, everything Apple makes it's overrated, and overpriced.
I love how the underground tunnels that lead to the garages looks like an Apple Store or an ad by apple! Walking around in office - 2.5hrs
HP Cupertino was my first job out of college back in 1997. Now I'm working at the Ring. I feel like I've come full circle.

To get from point a. to b. you have to go way around…also since every part of the structure is surrounded by light Tim chose to have no cubicals and everyone must work standing up looking toward the curved windows…unless in conference rooms…
@@Williamb612 lol umm no. Stop lying dude.
@@Schindlabua SC…nice analysis…to add it is a nightmare to go from one office to another if the other is on the other side of the sphere…you have to weave in and out of things and go completely around…

Both Apple and Google are pushing the boundaries of building tech which I think is fantastic. For architects and engineers they are akin to the royal patrons who supported artists in Renaissance Europe.
In fact I think future generations will look back on them as exactly that. 21st century art patrons
Apple: Everyone is crammed into the same dining area, forcing interaction
Introverts: Not if I bring my lunch and eat at my desk every day for the rest of my life.

This by far is my favorite designed building on the planet. It looks so futuristic.
It's kind of crazy how much 5 billion sounds like but when you compare it to their market cap it's pennies. Probably more in 2017.
If this building enabled Apple to create such dope marketing material and transitions for their Events, I think it should be the first example to be shown to students of Architecture, so they understand the importance of place and space
