In the original script it was Harry (Jeff Daniels) who was the one who put the bomb on the bus. The character had to retire after Keanu's character shot him during the hostage situation with the elevator at the beginning of the movie. It was after Jeff Daniels was cast that the producers/studio thought that no one would buy him as the "bad guy" because Jeff Daniels is too likeable. So, the script was changed to what we got.
lol I think they kinda recycled that script idea for the SWAT movie from 2003 where the villain is the main character's partner turned bad after he had to shoot him during a hostage situation.
Jeff Daniels said in an interview that he was supposed to be killed in the elevator sequence, but the movie was rewritten to have him killed at the house. I think it was on the Rich Eisen Show.

So fun fact about the jump. I found original footage behind the scenes. 1. They had the bus start one mile down the road. 2. They were hoping the bus to reach 65 mph at the jump, it only made it to 61 3. The bus went 109 feet down range 4. Unfortunately the front tires popped the door flew open and the dummies in the seats were thrown everywhere. 5 that bus would have exploded (but it made the jump)

No one ever believes the bus jump but they really did that (with a small ramp but still). I think people are hardwired to think everything spectacular in movies is CGI. But back then they had to figure out a way to do it practically. CGI still had a long way to go.

I saw an add for Greyhound bus drivers (national union wages) which paid about 2.5 x as much starting. I drove all over the N.W. If the roads were open we had to drive: rain, snow or ice. Around the holidays, buses would have up to 55 passengers. Fortunately on night runs virtually every one is asleep. I've hit ice on curves & had the entire bus sliding sideways. I used to tell people that one of the first things that you had to learn was to be able to scream, "Oh my God we're all going to die!" & not have a sound come out of your mouth.

That bus jump was real. The just set up a little ramp so it could jump and what they did was erase the ground it jumped over and made that the gap in the road. Movie magic 😂
That's not really true. The bus jumped nine feet and broke landing. Didn't make the distant of the gap AT ALL. it's like filming a person jumping down a step and editing the shot so they wind up on the roof of a building.

The guys on Mythbusters tackled a couple things from this movie; the passengers moving to one side of the bus so it could make a hard turn, and of course the bus jump. They used a remotely driven full-size bus like the one in the movie and drove it off a ramp to see if it would make the 50 foot gap shown in the movie. They pretty much showed that yes indeed, the bus would NOT have made that jump. Or even remotely close 😅
The music in this movie reminds me of the OST from the first Metal Gear Solid game. The game came out after the movie, so I honestly wonder if they got some inspiration from this movie. This is one of my fav action movies of all time because how fast-paced it is.
