“How did the bus go up?” Is a great question. It’s best to just let it go and enjoy this one.

Mythbusters did do a segment on the jump (and the "everyone got to one side" part as well) and in their test the bus could survive the landing fine, but it wouldn't have the distance. And they presumed a ramp there.

The only way that might work is if the bus had rear-wheel drive, and they juiced up the speed to make it pop a wheelie. But then the back of the bus wouldn't go up unless you had a ramp. It's best to not think about working out the logistics.

When Dawn mentioned how much she liked Jack staying centered the whole time, it reminded me of my favorite scene (which was not in this reaction).
After Harry’s death and the call ended, Jack lost it. There was real despair when he looks at Anne and says calmly “we are all going to die”. He needed Anne to talk him back. That moment showed us that he was human with limits, which adds to his heroic nature.

This film has a secret back story -- it was ghost written by Joss Whedon, and it was in large part a reaction to the over-the-top action films of the 80s (especially "Commando") which had become too graphically violent, filled with swearing, in which hundreds of people die without remorse or consequence, and everyone breaks the law left and right. In Speed, the police officers are polite (notice how Keanu mostly calls everyone "sir" and "ma'am"), the swearing is minimal and realistic, the police actually obey the law, the police don't shoot everyone they see (the villain is the only person the police kill and it's in self-defense), and with the exception of the villain every death is treated seriously with respect.

      @mmattson8947 Год назад +3

I also think of the scene after the bus hits the baby carriage full of recyclable cans.
It takes Anne time to regain her composure, to burn off the adrenaline surge of fear. Of course she'd almost be in tears, after the terror of thinking of what might have been. In most other films, they'd laugh it off immediately as an inconsequential event.

@@charlize1253, your little anti-police statement is so transparent. Action movies were changing overall anyway and exploring new ground. This movie just had a style like any other movie has a style. Keanu Reeves's character fit his personality. There was only one "villain" anyway.

Nobody is talking about the real police. This is about MOVIE police. Like Jon McLane in Die Hard who killed 12 people while off duty and drove off without any formal inquiry or even writing a report. Or the 2 bumbling FBI agents who died in the same movie and everybody cheered. Or Jodie Foster in The Silence of the Lambs who investigated a serial killer as a "trainee." And if any real cop acted like the movie cops did in "Bad Boys" or "Lethal Weapon," they'd be immediately suspended and investigated. Joss Whedon has said in interviews that, in writing Speed, he thought it would be a break to portray the police as actually competent at their jobs and willing to follow the rules. The fact that you responded in the way that you did shows just how unusual it is when movie police behave like that.

One of my favorite Keanu Reeves movies ever made!
John McTiernan, director of Die Hard and The Hunt For Red October, was originally considered for directing the project, until he picked his friend, Cinematographer Jan De Bont, to make his directorial debut, after his GODZILLA movie was cancelled by SONY in 1993.
Before Keanu Reeves was cast as the hero, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kurt Russell, Jeff Bridges, Tom Cruise, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Charlie Sheen, Emilio Estevez, Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes, Woody Harrelson, and Harrison Ford were considered.
Before Sandra Bullock was cast as Annie, Ellen DeGeneres, Meryl Streep, Anne Heche and Halle Berry were considered.
Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Jack Nicholson were considered for the mad bomber.
Joss Whedon( Buffy, Firefly, Avengers) had rewritten the action scenes and dialogue.
The scene where Reeves jumps from the car to the bus was one in one take, and Reeves did the stunt himself!
11 GMC Buses were built for the movie, some for the exterior scenes, as well as the interiors as well. 2 buses were used for the Freeway jump scene, and one was used to be blown at the climax.
The film was a box office and critical success, making $395 million dollars against a $40 million dollar budget.
It won Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing at the 1995 Academy Awards.

15:00 The woman with the cans in the baby carriage was collecting them to get the money for them from recycling. As a kid we’d do that with glass bottles, in the 70’s we got like .05 for each one. It’d pay for comics and gum. We didn’t have recycle bins in the house, we had to take them somewhere, usually a grocery store.
17:30 maps back then often didn’t match the real world, especially if you had an older one. Work construction and you’d have to work at places that didn’t exist on a map yet. Consumer GPS wasn’t really a thing yet, was still prohibitively expensive, and still (purposefully) inaccurate.

After the movie, there was a mail-away offer to order a piece of the bus (or one of the buses or maybe even the airplane). I got a tiny, unidentifiable piece of metal.
When I first saw the movie, I just accepted the bus stunt. I notice that newer viewers, probably from being familiar with clean, enhanced effects work, really notice how it goes up at the jump. That seemed to be the dividing line for its critics. It was actually filmed with the bus jumping a ramp while on a completed road, with some trickery to make it look like it was going over a gap. Nowadays, it would be a simple effects shot.

Voight and Roberts both earned Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for their performances. On every train built in the US (and probably _other_ developed countries), at _least_ as far back as the 1920's, there's a _safety_ mechanism in the cockpit that the engineer has to keep _pressure_ on. If the engineer _leaves_ the cockpit, dies, or is forcibly _removed,_ the pressure comes off and the brakes _engage._

The airplane that the bus blew up was a very early 707 with JT-8 engines. It was a museum piece that likely hadn't flown since the bad guy (Dennis Hopper) filmed "Easy Rider."
Hopper rose to fame in "Rebel Without a Cause," and kinda wandered aimlessly as an actor. I think one of his best performances was in "The Sons of Katie Elder," another John Wayne cowboy flick...

If you look closely her shoe is in her right hand and the other one is on her foot. She didn't lose her shoe in the elevator, and you could clearly see both shoes on her feet as she was lifted out of the elevator (5:56). I think the actress adlibbed that and just didn't think to just throw her shoe off camera.

Fun movie. But you are right. Buses don't go up when they run off of a ledge. And Jack didn't seem to have a lot of sense, either. He saved all the people on the bus but at the same time didn't think it important to steer the bus out of harm's way before they escaped. No one was apparently killed but he couldn't have known that plane was empty. And how many people could he have potentially killed by speeding up the subway car and forcing it to derail? Had things gone differently he could have had a lot of negligent homicide charges leveled against him.

If the train didn't speed up, it wouldn't go off the rails and as a result it would be able make the right turn the railway does, and end up hitting whatever there is at the end of the rails. That said, I don't remember how he knew there was open space ahead of the curve if you don't make the right turn and go straight though, maybe he knew the area from the map and made a good guess.

This is a fun action film, the sequel isn't so good, 'Speed 2: Cruise Control' also it doesn't star Keanu Reeves in the lead role, you can react to it but it's not one which I'd recommend to be honest.
