  • Welcome to our first-time reaction to Speed (1994) movie. This incredible '90s action packed film is filled with some incredible heart-stopping suspense, some awesome stunts and of course an intense pace that will keep anyone at the edge of their seats.
    "Speed" follows LAPD officer Jack Traven, played by Keanu Reeves, who must thwart a madman's deadly plan. The premise seems simple enough but man was it entertaining to see him doing everything in his power to avoid that bus from dropping below 50 miles per hour. Jan de Bont did a phenomenal job at consistently making the stakes more and more engaging.
    The chemistry between Keany Reeves and Sandra Bullock was fantastic and it truly made this film even more entertaining than it already was.
    We hope you enjoy our reactions and commentary as we discuss how this movie fits into the action genre, the explosive bus sequences and of course the daring stunts.
    Join us on this exhilarating ride and prepare for all the twists and turns that await in the high-speed excitement of "Speed."

When Speed came out I was so impressed that Sandra Bullock's character didn't rip her blouse or skirt and she didn't have an extraordinary kind of power. I hope many can forgive that I kinda rolled my eyes when the trailers released. Another safe action packed film with pretty leads and predictable writing - that's how it was done. This could've easily become the Fast and Furious if created later, becoming more outlandish to up the stakes. :)

      @terrylandess6072 it's not typical though. It's arguably one of the top five action movies of all time. It had a modest budget, but it crushed the competition that summer, including Blown Away with Tommy Lee Jones. That was supposed to be the "mad bomber" big budget blockbuster of the summer. But then Speed came out of nowhere. Now, Blown Away I would argue is a typical (and pretty good actually) action movie. Speed is not typical. Go read Roger Ebert's and some other critics' reaction at the time of its release. Again, a top five action movie of all time is not "typical"

    My strongest first memory of this film is watching it on tv with my parents, we all really enjoyed it a lot. I like what you said about the pacing and the tension vs relief, this never gets boring or tiring. I hadn’t seen point break before this, so the only film I knew Keanu in was Bill and Ted’s. Also I have yet to see a bad movie Keunu has made, at this point I am not entirely sure it’s possible for him to make a truly terrible film, Keanu is just that awesome. As for the sequel to speed, I can’t really recommend it, I watched it once and never found a need to watch it again, your results may vary.
    Thank you so much for the commentary and reactions, I enjoy great commentary… greatly. Looking forward to the next one!

It was dismissively called " Die Hard on a bus" That of course all changed once people gave it a chance. It gave Keanu and Sandra's careers a huge boost. A couple of Keanu movies to see are Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Parenthood , in Parenthood he has a supporting role. Dennis Hopper who plays the bad guy here is a legend, he plays bad guys so well., check him out in EASY RIDER, BLUE VELVET , and APOCALYPSE NOW, and WATERWORLD. His character in Waterworld is wild!!

      @kenpaden 6 месяцев назад

      Jose, thanks for your reply, just do a google search asking if Speed was a sleeper hit, all kinds of articles will pop up. It was starting to change the last week or so when actual critics actually saw the movie and were raving about it. Check the box office numbers also, it opened to about 14millioin, which is not bad but it barely dropped the next 4 weeks because of word of mouth, people telling their friends this film is really good. A movie with very small drops in box office numbers from one week to next are rare, usually they make a big splash the first week then drop 30- to 50% the next week. I also think the Hollywood big shots missed the growing star power of Keanu Reeves.

    1. Goodfellas (1990) - If you haven’t, you MUST. A classic. IMO, better than The Godfather.
    2. Sling blade (1996) - Billy Bob Thornton’s greatest achievement. This one will stay with you forever.
    3. Runaway Train (1985) - No one has ever done this for a reaction yet. It’s a fantastic film with amazing character development. Very gritty and emotional.
    4. Heat (1995) - Michael Mann’s crime masterpiece. Not to be missed.
    5. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985) - William Friedkin’s fantastically gritty and realistic crime drama. Also boasts one of cinema’s best car chases. Don’t miss this!
