When rumor broke of a hollywood studio doing a remake of The Princess Bride, Cary Elwes/Wesley posted on Twitter:
"There's a shortage of perfect movies in the world, it would be a pity to damage it." lol what a great call back
Okay, but I honestly find that a very strange attitude. People always go on about a remake "ruining" the original, but, like, the original movie isn't going to stop existing just because someone makes their own take.
How many times has a remake been even remotely as good as the original? So why bother?@@antonbrakhage490

With all affection and respect to Paul Wight, we also cannot replace Andre. Sometimes it truly is better to leave well enough alone.
Ok, I agree that The Princess Bride is one of the few films out there that TRULY don't need to ever be remade...
BUT. Pedro Pascal as Inigo (which you _know_ they'd do).... would be pretty damn good.
Andre the Giant was so proud of his performance in this movie, he thought it was his most important contribution to mankind. Even better than his wrestling career...

The last "As you wish" from Grandpa gets me every time. i don't think he's farmboy, but he's definitely saying he loves his grandson.
Back when covid hit a bunch of big stars put together a homemade version of this, everyone doing their section in their own home. The final scene was with Rob Reiner playing the grandson and his father Carl Reiner playing the grandfather. When he said "as you wish" it turned out to be the last words he said to Rob because he passed away a few days later.
In my mind, The Grandfather is the Most Recent Man in Black.
There’s a theory that Grandpa was actually a Dread Pirate Roberts when he was younger. I totally subscribe to that idea.
As a child I 100% thought that this was meant to be a reveal that the Grandpa was Westley, all time period problems aside xD Warmed my heart to see the same conclusion reached ❤

That said... grief takes its own time, and I'm sure he still felt it just as strongly. "Count Rugen" said that Mandy's intensity scared him for real during the filming of that scene.
@@MagsonDare yes he sad Mandy was taking it so seriously he was terrified he was going to be stabbed, and he said the look in Mandy's face was one of pure rage. But as always Mandy was the ultimate professional and controlled himself.

I've watched many a reaction to this movie, and that's by far and away the quickest anyone has recognized The Man In Black as Wesley.... and the first time he's been recognized by his butt.

My wife and I say this to each other all the time. We also say “look who knows so much”, “anybody want a peanut?”, “my way’s not very sportsmanlike”, and so many other quotes from this movie.
12:30 “Oh no, she’s on fire!” Fun fact, that’s exactly what William Goldman, the author of the book, said when Buttercup’s dress caught on fire! It was the first take (and yes, they did it practically), and Goldman was on set, but in the moment he forgot that her dress was supposed to catch fire because it was in the book (which he wrote), so he started screaming and ruined the take, so they had to do it over.

Those 2 sword fights are actually considerd by many fans/movie scholars to be 2 of the best sword fights in all cinema, ever.

This is exactly what I'm looking for in a reaction video: Actual, simple, genuine in-the-moment reactions to the content of the movie. This is perfect. It gets so tiresome checking out new react channels just to find that they spend the whole movie constantly talking, asking questions that the movie will answer if they wait for 5 seconds, constantly trying to out think the movie instead of enjoying it. This is what movie reactions should be.

Nailed it. The worst reactors are the ones that build a big following and then get giant swollen egos. They start to think people are there to see their "comedy". They think that anything they are saying is much more poignant and witty than anything the film's writers or directors were trying to say. It becomes their goal to talk over dialogue and make up "punchlines" for every scene. There's a few reactors I used to really like, and over the course of a couple years, they became utterly unwatchable.
This is what happens when normal people watch good movies.

I disagree, I love seeing the theorists too, the worst reaction channels are the ones that just sit and say nothing and are basically just a repost of the original content, watching people try to work through their process of the stuff is also very fun
In the beginning of the movie they make the point that when Westley says "as you wish" it means "I love you." So when the Grandfather says "as you wish" to his grandson, he's telling him he loves him. It's not a hint that the Grandfather was actually Westley.
Lol, people have been arguing about that since this came out. I also think he probably isn't Wesley but you'd really have to ask the author.
If grandpa is Farmboy, then grandma is Buttercup.
Andre was beloved by the cast and crew. And he loved the movie because on the set he was just one of the performers so after a while nobody paid him any extra attention.
I read the same thing. Throughout his wrestling career, he was always treated like an oddity, and he always felt like he had to be the “life of the party”, buying drinks for everyone at the bar, to get people to like him. I have read that, on the movie set was the only place he felt comfortable because everyone respected him and treated him like a friend. It sounds like he really had a tragic life. I’m glad there was some place he could find a little peace.
@@asterix7842 It's funny. In the ring, he was a major heel. But, outside the ring, he was reputed as one of the sweetest people in the world.

@@JnEricsonx I remember that story. I also heard that Wallace Shawn was feeling very nervous during the Cliffs scene. But Andre helped ease his fears.
@DesertRider-zs2qb He was terrified of heights, even if only a few feet off the ground. Andre, who'd suffered a back injury and couldn't lift more than 10 pounds without further injuring his back, told Wallace Shawn not to worry, he would take care of him. After that, Shawn was fine doing the scene, because when Andre tells you he will keep you safe, you will be safe.
One of the reasons Buttercup didn’t recognize Westley is that…Westley had been dead for five years. If you lose a loved one, and mourn them, and five years later you meet a person who looks and acts just like them, your most likely response would be…huh, this complete stranger acts just like my dead loved one. That’s kinda creepy. Ew. Ok, I’m going to stop looking for further similarities now, before I dredge up old wounds and spend the next three weeks crying.
Funny enough, in the book, Buttercup is pretty much described as extremely beautiful, but not very smart. So her not recognizing Westley seems pretty in-character. 😂
There’s a lot of humor in the book that comes from the fact that Buttercup is as dumb as a rock.
The sword fight between Westley and Inigo is one of the best you will ever see on film
This movie is just so sweet. Stardust has a similar vibe to princess bride but flew under the radar.
Stardust is underrated for sure.

Stardust was good. I need to watch it again. If you're looking for another movie that was a "kids" movie from the 80's, one year after this in fact, you should watch Willow. One of Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis's earlier works.

In the movie it is said when Wesley said “As you wish” to Buttercup he actually meant I love you. When the grandfather said it to his grandson it didn’t mean he was Wesley, he was simply telling his grandson he loved him.
That's always what I understood it to mean. Now as a father of 3 wonderful kids, when we watch this movie together, I actually get misty eyed at that part. Call me a softie.
Andre the Giant was really proud of this movie. The woman who played Buttercup, I always forget her name, said that he was incredibly sweet. She said one day when they had a break from shooting, the crew went horseback riding and got caught in freezing rain. She says Andre noticed her shivering and casually rested his hand on her head like a hat. She said it both warmed her up and kept the rain off surprisingly well but more than that, it made her feel safe.
I highly recommend you look up behind-the-scenes stories about the making of this film. They are all hilarious. For instance, Wesley in the miracle Max scene is most a dummy because Carey Elwis couldn't stop laughing. Or the night before the scene on the hill, Elwis broke his ankle ATVing with Andre. There was that time Andre let out a 17-second fart on set and stopped production. Or the time the guy in the ROUS costume got pulled over by the police while wearing the costume.
Regarding the ROUSes, they don't exist. 🙃
There was an alternate ending filmed, where the boy picks up the book and started reading after his grandpa left. Then he hears a noise outside his window, and sees the four characters on horseback, beckoning him to join them on more adventures. (In other words, reading is fun.)
Director Rob Reiner chose not to use it, because he didn't want audiences to confuse the fantasy world with the fantasy world. So he used the ending we saw here (because, according to the start of the story, "as you wish" means "I love you"), but it seems that a lot of people still misunderstood, thinking it meant that the grandpa was Westley. He was not.
Fun fact, I literally came back from the dead to watch this movie for the first time ^_^ I was in a coma when I was 12 and died for 40 seconds. A couple of days after I woke up and was back on a regular ward, there was a VCR in the room, and the Princess Bride was the first movie I saw (followed by recent release Dragonheart.) Worth it ^_^ Epic sword fight choreographed by the legend Bob Anderson, whose career spanned far enough to choreograph for Errol Flynn and the Mask of Zorro. RIP, legend :3 If you enjoyed that scene, I remember the choreography in Scaramouche was similar, though less awesome because everything is xD

They said they wanted to rival the sword fight in the remake of Prisoner of Zenda. The one with Stuart Granger. Probably the second greatest sword fight in movie history.
While I have never met someone who didn't like this movie, I don't think I've ever seen anyone who enjoyed it the first time as much as you. That was a lot of fun to see, thank you!
Jack Skelington has a LOT of emotional and character growth after this😳😳 He went from Prince Humperdibk to Pumpkin KING.
The book is written just like this, too, with the grandpa reading the story to the kid. It's wonderful.

@@gloomygloomstalker3878 It's a little different, but the book that William Goldman wrote was as if the book by Simon Morganstern actually existed before Goldman wrote it and Goldman was only abridging it, and the framing story included a lot of Goldman's father reading this story to him. Including attributing the "You're reading it wrong!" part to himself, and in the story of the book, his dad just stops reading that night and he doesn't hear the dream justification until the next day. It's practically the moral of the overall story, the way he frames it, that "Life _isn't_ fair. It's just fairer than death".

My uncle is a pastor, and I actually convinced him to do the marriage sequence for my wedding lol. My family had seen the movie, but my wife's family had not. So half the wedding was laughing and the other thought my uncle had an speech impediment hahah
Wonderful reaction to such a beloved movie. I remembered the cheering in the theater when Inigo killed Count Rugen.
This is a nearly perfect movie. My favorite memory is of my friends not wanting to watch this because it was a girly movie to which my friends and i said said girly movie and in Peter Faulks voice we went out had Fencing, Fighting, Adventures, captures, escapes, true love.

My favorite tidbit I've read is that the movie had been shot except for the Grandpa/Grandson scenes. Andre went to the set just so Fred could meet him and answered all his wrestling questions. Andre sent him a Christmas card every year until he passed and he looked forward to it the most.

A perfectly blended movie; of Fantasy, Love, and Comedy. Fun Facts - Andre was particularly proud of the film, and would often discuss the filming of it ad-nauseum to his fellow wrestlers for hours, much to their annoyance and boredom. I can't remember if it was the Director or one of the Writers who recently stated that the ending was suppose to allude to the Grandad being a descendent of the Dread Pirate Roberts. The film was based on a book, and was to have the heroes fight in a ménage of exotic animals, but the budget could not stretch to it, so it was cut.
Miracle Max restored Wesley back to full life, including the life he lost to the machine.
I wish they didn't cut the scene where the grandpa tells the sick kid about all the murders he solved when he was a homicide detective in Los Angeles.

No lie. I can just be endlessly grateful that this was the first movie I saw that guy in. In my opinion, it was his best (physically, at least). He and all the other amazing actors in this movie were absolutely blessed to have been a part of this classic! Thank you so much for sharing!!

There is also another version called The Princess Bride Home Movie, with an Allstar cast including Fred Savage as an adult, Jack Black, Adam Sandler, Jenna Ortega, Paul Rudd, Hugh Jackman, Sophie Turner, John Malkovich, and about 20 others. It's so cheesy that it's actually Great.
The second best thing after seeing this movie the first time, is seeing someone else see it for the first time.
My favorite thing about this movie: it plays pretty much exactly like a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.
We all want more movies like this.

I have watched dozens of reactions to this movie. I have to say, I cannot recall one I enjoyed as much. This was great!
You may recognize Westley as The Man in Black, but the grandson, having only the words read to him, has only his imagination to "fill in the blanks," or to take a guess. Works the same way for all the characters -- they're in a fantasy world and have no concept of who the others are! Grandpa's "As you wish" at the very end does NOT mean he's Westley/FarmBoy; it means Grandfather is a very caring family member and favors his grandson!
During the filming of the ascent of The Cliffs of Insanity all four actors were attached to a harness and pulled up the cliff. Wallace Shawn was really frightened and scared that he would spoil the scene. Sensing this Andre the Giant put his massive had on Shawn’s head and stroked it saying “It’s alright I will keep you safe.” That was enough to calm him down and he was fine for the whole day’s filming.
Prince Humperdinck’s actor reminded me of the movie Fright Night, you should watch that if you haven’t seen it yet!
On set, Andre the Giant let out a 16-second fart that brought the entire production to a standstill. Elwes said "Nobody said anything except Rob Reiner (the director), who said 'Are you OK, Andre?' and André replied, 'I am now, boss.'
Hands down, the best romantic comedy ever written. It's a top 10 film for me.
The Dread Pirate Roberts was probably named after an actual famous pirate, Bartholomew Roberts, who captured 400 ships and died fighting a British warship in the middle of a tropical storm.

This is my favorite movie of all time. It came out the year I was born. If you want to go for the trifecta, you should watch this, Robin Hood men in tights, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail ❤

This is my absolute favorite movie of all time. I was 11 years old when it came out, about the same age as the grandson in the movie, so it holds a special place in my heart. So, as you can imagine, I've watched a lot of people react to this movie. Your reaction was a joy to watch, because it genuinely seemed like you liked it as much as I always have.

To my generation, the name Humperdink is synonymous with heart-throb. Ingelbert Humperdink's recordings, beginning with three huge hits in 1967, had sales of more than 140 million worldwide during his five-decade career. My mom was just one of millions of women who adored the British crooner, now 88.
Nooo, his grandfather is not Farmboy. But what you didn´t realize is that whenever he said "As you wish", what he truly meant was "I love you".
André the Giant didn't know how to speak English, in this movie, he just did it phonetically. As you've seen in this movie, it's a film about love. It was filmed in a very cold time of year, in Eastern Europe. THe access who played Buttercup got very, very cold. André used to rest his massive hand on her head, to keep her warm. He didn't have a good life, it was wracked with pain and alcoholism but this movie was something he saw as the time in his life where he loved and was loved. I don't think he knew the relivence of, "As you wish." but in year to come, it was the line in the movie that was most about him.
I'm fairly sure the location shoots were mostly done in Derbyshire, UK rather than Eastern Europe. It did get very cold nonetheless.

Mandy Patinkin has recently said that his favorite line in the film is, "I've been in the revenge business so long, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life." He thinks it's a hugely important message for all of us.
Next movie should definitely be Robin Hood, Men in Tights. So many good actors in it. Including Patrick Stewart. It's a spoof of the original, so it's incredibly funny. Fun fact, Buttercup was also in Wonder Woman.
Plus, unlike some other Robin Hoods, Cary can speak with an English accent.
This is literally my favorite movie of all times and it brings me SO much joy to watch your reactions to one of the greatest movies ever created.
We rented this movie because Andre the Giant was in it. Tv “Pro” wrestling was kind of hilarious back then and we watched it fairly often. We were completely surprised how great and hilarious this movie is. Bought it. Wore out the first one and bought another. When DVD’s came out, I bought that. It, to me, is one of the most entertaining movies ever made.

I watched this movie over 500 times as a kid/teen. Had it memorized and could run through the dialogue from start to finish. 😂 Ever after correcting people when they quote it… Also had Spaceballs memorized, but only watched it a couple dozen times… 🤦♂️
Now you gotta watch Labyrinth the movie that gave A LOT of my generation....confusing feeling that lasted well into adulthood 🤣🤣🤣🤣🦉

I was a substitute teacher for a while, and I enjoyed putting this on for the younger kids. The girls would hear princess and bride and squeal and the boys would hear princess and bride and go ewww. Then by the end, everyone would want to watch it again, me especially. This is one of my favorites.
It was SO refreshing to see reactors who actually got (and appreciated!) ALL of the brilliant humor in this movie. I've been amazed at how many just don't get most of it... and most of 'em certainly don't recognize Billy Crystal. lol. Fantastic reaction!

When answering his grandson's request for another reading the grandfather says "As you wish ". And just as in the book what he is saying to his grandson is .. I love you.

Grandpa wasn't Farmboy. Him saying "As you wish" at the end was just him telling his grandson "I love you".
Grandpa was played by the great Peter Falk (Columbo). You recognized Billy Crystal as Miracle Max, but his wife was played by the wonderful Carol Kane.
Another great movie with Peter Falk, Peter Sellers, Alec Guinness, Maggie Smith, and Truman Capote is Neil Simon's Murder by Death (1976)
Christopher Guest (Count Rugan) can be seen in This is Spinal Tap (1984)
If this movie got you into swordfighting and you want to see more, you might want to check out The Mask of Zorro (1998), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), or the AMC tv series from a few yers back, Into the Badlands.

William Goldman, the actual author of the book, and the screenwriter, said he asked his two young daughters what they wanted him to write a story for them about. One daughter wanted a story about a Princess, the other wanted a story about a bride. The Princess Bride. Goldman is a brilliant screen writer., We read his first novel in high school in the 70s, "The Temple of Gold"...
Someone should tell her Buttercup is also Forest Gump’s Jenny!

In the book, Vizzini is so smart that he borders on clairvoyant. When given all the info, he can conceive a perfect outcome and act accordingly.
Wesley is a complete X-factor; as a result every thing Wesley does is... inconceivable. 😮
We must remember, what we are watching is actually the imagination of the boy whilst listening to his grandfather. In the book the mask obviously made it impossible for her to recognise him and that the reader/listener gets a surprise as intended when he finally says "As you wish".
Now you need to watch Willow. It's another great adventure movie.
Why do some people think Grampa is Farm Boy? Do they also think there's a Cliffs of Insanity and that Shrieking Eels are real? Sheesh.

Saw a TikTok the other day that said that the Count Rugen actor actually knocked Cary Elwes out when he clonked him on the head outside the Fire Swamp. He woke up in the ER.
Yep he actually knocked him out. Cary felt the other takes they had done didn't look real enough and he told Guest to actually hit him.

Back in the 80's, my friends (in our mid 20's) were trying to find a movie at Blockbuster and were striking out. I saw this one (which I had seen) and convinced them to rent it. They were very skeptical. So there we were, at my friend's house, 20-something friends drinking beers and watching this movie. About 20 minutes in, they looked at me and said, "This is really good." Memorable moment. :)
I've watched a lot of reactions to this movie, yours is by far the best one! I love how completely invested you got with the plot!
