  • I watched The Princess Bride for the first time ever this week! I CANNOT believe that I waited so long to tackle this one. Wow just wow. I started this expecting an earnest PG fantasy and I ended with a renewed sense that I'm absolute trash for not realizing that was MANDY PANTINKIN. I'm not okay truly.

    Part of the reason Mandy Patinkin loves this role so much is because it helped him during the grieving process of his own father dying. His father died of cancer not long before he got the role of Inigo Montoya, and he used his grief to inform his performance of a son avenging the death of his father. I personally get emotional when he tells the 6 fingered man (Christopher Guest, btw) "I want my father back, you son of a bitch."

    Mandy Patinkin tells a great story about the Cliffs of Insanjty scene. Wallace Shawn( Vinzini ) was terribly scared of heights, even just a few feet. Some of it was shot on a set, vertically. Wally was terrified, could not control himself, was afraid that Rob Reiner would have to replace him . Andre the Giant saw that something was wrong and asked about it. Wally explained. Andre took Wally's hand in his own, said, "Don't worry, I take care of you." Wallywas cured, just like that, shot the rest of the sequence without any trouble.

  • @stephanginther9051
    @stephanginther9051 3 года назад +41

    A bitter sweet thing about this film was Andre's health. This was towards the end of his life and he had a lot of health problems. In the scenes where he is carrying Buttercup, he insisted on a harness and wire do the actual lifting because with his back he was afraid he would drop her. The actress tells this story about him. They went riding horses in the rain and she was shivering because she was cold and drenched. He noticed and rested his hand on her head like a hat. She said the heat from his hand warmed her up and made her feel safe. The actress chocked up a bit when talking about him, saying he was one of the kindest people she'd ever met.

    • @artbagley1406
      @artbagley1406 2 года назад +11

      The fencing scenes were fought by Cary and Mandy; they practiced daily for at least 4 months each (I think Mandy maybe for 5 months). They had as coaches olympic coaches/fencing experts who had taught the likes of actors Burt Lancaster and Erroll Flynn. Rob Reiner wanted HIS fencing scene here in "TPB" to be greater than any of those in earlier films. Mandy and Cary started their learning by tackling the LEFT HANDED sequences first!

    • @donwild50
      @donwild50 2 года назад +10

      The names used in the sword fight were those of actual historic fencing masters, Rocco Bonetti, Ridolfo Capo Ferro, Girard Thibault and Camillo Agrippa. The techniques performed have little if any relationship to the fencing techniques actually taught by these men but there is some very obscure but sly wit involved which only persons familiar with the styles taught would catch. For example "You're using Bonetti's Defense!" Ironic, as Bonetti's Defense, if it existed wasn't very good since he was killed outside his own school by an Englishman. Capo Ferro would have looked at the scene and scoffed because his treatise said the cuts and spins were useless and almost all rapier work should be linear and purely directed at the thrust. Camillo Agrippa disagreed and said cuts and thrusts were valid...but he would have said the extreme parries were over the top as he reduced the classical eleven guard positions to only four. And Thibault wouldn't have agreed with any of them because, unlike the others who taught the Italian School linear thrust techniques, he was a master of the Spanish School, which was based on a very circular theory. (Ironically, if you watched the Antonio Banderas "Zorro" movies, the training he receives from Hopkins is almost totally in the Spanish School style.)

    Andre the Giant is on record of saying that making this film was his favorite time in his life. Him and the cast became extremely close. Cary Elwes and Mandy Patinkin have sooo many Andre stories :) he loved it so much because he didn't feel like an outsider like he did everywhere else. He felt like an equal while working with the cast and crew. When Andre died the whole cast was devastated. Robin Wright can't talk about him without tears welling up in her eyes. There's a great story about how Wallace Shawn (who played the little guy Vizzini) how he was deathly afraid of heights. So much so, that he was having panic attacks about going up the cliffs of Insanity. He was afraid he was going to get fired. Finally, when it came time to shoot the scene, Andre saw how nervous Shawn was. Andre cradled him while they were in the harness (there weren't dummies, it was actually them!) and according to Mandy Patinkin "Andre patted his head and whispered, 'Don't worry. I'll take care of you,'" all the way up. Shawn had no more issues with the cliffs from then on :)

      To slightly clarify: the moment when it was the long shot, and she commented that they were probably dummies: they were in fact dummies on a stunt actor in that shot. Andre the Giant did not *literally* haul three grown adults up a thousand foot cliff. But the close-ups of the three of them strapped to Andre, when Vizzini is berating him for not climbing faster: that was on a set piece that was some few feet off the ground. Wallace Shawn was indeed scared, and Andre did indeed (according to anecdotes told by Mandy Patinkin and other cast members) soothe and calm him.
      So your story is true, but there were intercuts of a stunt person with dummies for the long shots, also.

    This bit of trivia will blow your mind and make you feel better about failing to recognize Mandy (and Billy Crystal). At the cast party after this movie was done filming, the director Rob Reiner saw Christopher Guest in attendance and thought to himself something like “hey, my good friend Chris, whom I recently worked with on Spinal Tap-how nice of him to stop by the party!” - and he went over and greeted Guest and thanked him for coming out to support the film.
    … Christopher Guest had played his role as Count Rugen (the six-fingered man) so well that the DIRECTOR, his FRIEND Rob Reiner, had forgotten that Guest was in the movie they just made. 😂

    "Where does this take place?"
    That's actually an interesting question. The book this movie is based on is written from the perspective of its author, William Goldman. In it, he claims he sought after this book so that he may write a translation for his son as a means of getting closer to him, and after a lengthy battle with the original author's family in Florin (who owned the rights) he was finally able to publish his translation. He also teased the first chapter of a sequel he was writing, which you could request from his publisher.
    Only this book never actually existed, neither did his son (he had two daughters), the wife he described was fictional, and the country never existed. Although you would receive the first chapter of the sequel if you wrote the publisher, the sequel didn't actually exist, and neither did the publisher.
    Long story short, it takes place in Florin, a fake small european country the author gaslit the readers into believing. Also, I highly recommend reading the book of you have a chance, well worth it.

Also, notice how Inigo returns every injury he received in reverse order (except the gut shot, which was a dishonorable move), starting with the shoulders, then the cheeks, and finally through the heart.
    Giant fact: For the beginning of the cliff climbing scene, they built a rubber foam facade of the base of the cliff with a forklift behind it to lift them up; supposedly (this part may not be true) they originally planned on using a pulley mechanism but even with five men pulling it they couldn't lift Andre. Also, Wallace Shawn (Vizzini) was absolutely _terrified_ of heights, but Andre stroked his hair like a pet and told him "Don't worry my friend, I have you", and he was totally fine for the rest of the day's filming.

    Inigo‘s fight with Count Rugen absolutely deserves all the attention it gets, but I also love Wesley‘s To the Pain threat to Humperdinck and even Buttercup’s You’re a Coward speech. Grandpa saying As You Wish at the very end never fails to make me tear up. I love the scene of Westley sobbing after Count Rugen sucks one year of his life away, an entire year with his true love ripped away from him. The gorgeous perfection of The Man in Black & Inigo’s duel, especially knowing how much work they put into it, is poetry in motion. Mah-widge . . . , Inconceivable (and the whole battle of wits scene). Rest well and dream of large women. Have fun storming the castle! (and all of Miracle Max and Valerie. ThE PiT oF dEsPaIr! DoN’t eVeN tHiNk . . . And literally every word and scene not mentioned here. 🥰🥰🥰

    I saw this movie in the theater when it came out. A friend and I decided to go see a movie, but had no idea what was playing. We had never heard of "The Princess Bride", but took a gamble. When the movie ended, we walked directly to the ticket booth, bought two more tickets, and dashed back into the the theater. I eventually saw the movie six times in the theater. It was better with each viewing. My favorite line has always been Peter Faulk's "As you wish" at the end. I thought he deserved an Academy Award for that one line.

    "I didn't know this was going to be poking fun at the fantasy genre"
    This was like a whole thing in the 80's. Starting with "Monty Python and The Holy Grail". Director Terry Gilliam followed that up with "Jabberwocky", "Time Bandits", and "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen". Fellow Python Terry Jones directed "Erik the Viking" and Graham Chapman wrote "Yellowbeard".
    For that matter, the second Conan movie, aiming for a more kid-friendly audience, toned down the violence and cranked up the comic relief. And Willow is from George Lucas, so, like Star Wars, its full of quirky characters and banter

    I'm so glad you enjoyed this movie so much. One thing that might not be as appreciated today is the quirky, post-ironic sense of humor - because nowadays that type of humor is VERY common. However, when Princess Bride came out, a script for a genre movie filled with such self-awareness was considered a breath of fresh air. My worries were unfounded though, since you clearly "got" it.

      When I was editing this one I realized that I didn't think this was going to be a comedy at all, definitely thought it'd be a serious fantasy story...so in the beginning up until the sword fight, I'm actually nervous and tense because I was talking it all super seriously, then I was able to chill out knowing that it was all going to be fun and self-aware. Like the eels scene had me all nervous lolol

    This movie was an instant classic! I saw it in theaters.
    The swordfight between Westley and Inigo is often cited among the 10 best swordfights ever put on film!
    Mandy Patinkin was a trained fencer from Juilliard Drama School but Cary Elwes had no background in swordplay. Bob Anderson, who portrayed Darth Vader during lightsaber battles, spent months prepping both actors for the duel on set but, when they performed the routine for director Rob Reiner, it ended too quickly for his taste and he told them to come up with something splashier. The art department added rocks and stairs and arches to provide more space for stunts, a gymnast was brought in to perform acrobatic moves and the actors watched every swashbuckling film they could find including the work of Richard Lester, Burt Lancaster and Errol Flynn. They paid special attention to 1952's "Scaramouche" based on the Rafael Sabatini novel because its swordfight was the longest in duration. Both Patinkin and Elwes were trained ambidextrously and Elwes broke his big toe while practicing. When they demonstrated the new routine for Reiner, he had them duel for days while he caught the battle from every possible angle. The routine is so widely appreciated that fencing academies today study the scene and reenact it with their students!
    Mandy Patinkin is an internationally famous stage and screen actor who played Saul Berenson for 8 years on "Homeland".
    Robin Wright is Sean Penn's ex-wife, plays the First Lady in "House of Cards" and Antiope in "Wonder Woman".
    Billy Crystal is an internationally famous comedic actor known for his charity concerts with the late Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg.
    Wallace Shawn is a Broadway luminary.
    Andre the Giant was a world-famous wrestler.
    Peter Falk was rumpled but astute Detective Columbo for decades on U.S. television.
    Fred Savage was the kid star of "The Wonder Years", a '60s nostalgia show from the '80s.
    Chris Sarandon is Susan Sarandon's ex-husband and a character actor still working today.
    Carol Kane is a comedienne still working today and known for her roles in the series "Taxi" and the movie "Scrooged".
    Cary Elwes is a Brit character actor who does amazing impressions, typically plays Americans and was recently the Mayor on "Stranger Things".
    Rob Reiner is the son of television comedian Carl Reiner, co-star of the revolutionary sitcom "All in the Family" and director of "Stand By Me", "When Harry Met Sally", "A Few Good Men", "Misery", "Ghosts of Mississippi", "LBJ" and "Shock and Awe"
    The screenplay is adapted by William Goldman from his book.
    Six other movies that have the same vibe as "The Princess Bride":
    "Stardust"
    "The Neverending Story"
    "Willow"
    "Labyrinth"
    "Ladyhawke"
    "Hook"

    When I was a kid, my best friend and I got wooden swords from the local renaissance fair and would have little battles in my front yard. He pulled the "I know something you don't: I am not left handed" thing on me and I hadn't seen the movie yet. Afterwards, he and I would emulate Inigo and Westley's fight with Nerf swords years later. This has always been one of my favorite movies because of those memories, not just from watching the flick.
    Also, as I said in a reply to another comment here, Mandy Patinkin says his "I want my father back, you son of a bitch" line with such passion because sadly his father passed away from cancer just before filming began, and the line was obviously fairly cathartic for him at the moment.

    It's hard to describe an entire runtime as your favorite part of a movie, but here we are. Never saw this in theaters, but in the 90s it was on regular rotation on cable, HBO, Cinemax, TBS, and TNT and it was a stop everything and watch kind of thing. It is a flawless film in my eyes, that elicits pure joy. I've gotten more emotional about it the older I've gotten. In addition to the all star cast (breakout roles for Cary Elwes and Robin Wright) we have Kevin Arnold from the Wonder Years being read a story by freaking Columbo! Perfection. It is on the small list of films that I can recite the dialogue from memory. No, that's not it, it's on the small list of films, that LARGE swathes of people who saw it can recite the dialogue from memory.

Plus several famous and unexpected cameo appearances similar to THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Also the appeal of a well-done period piece. It is hard to put forward a strong recommendation without accidentally adding a 'spoiler'... so I'll stop here.
