The actor who played Inigo Montoya lost his father to cancer. For his role, he pictured the six fingered man as cancer.
The line he delivers "I want my father back you son of a bitch" is soo believable and moving.

The original author of "The Princess Bride" also called it a classic. You have to admire a guy who calls his own story a classic before it's been published and anyone has had a chance to read it.

@@VKunia - Andre the Giant really was that strong. He got his first job moving furniture because he could do the work of 4 men. He could carry a piano by himself. The actress who played Buttercup was terrified the first time she saw him. He is one of the largest humans to ever live. He was actually a giant. RIP. He was like 7'6 and 500 pounds. He was never going to live to reach 50 because of his giant-ism. He could drink 100 beers and not be particularly drunk. He said that he 'quit drinking' when he only drank 3 bottles of wine a day.
When this came out, I was dragged kicking and screaming by my girlfriend to see it,...I am eternally grateful to her.
My dad dragged me. And then I dragged my best friend. And then he dragged our entire group of friends.....

When Robin Wright (Buttercup) was filming the boat scene she was shivering from being wet and being in the cold. Andre the Giant would put his hand on her head. His hands were so large they completely enveloped her head and helped keep her warm. He later said that filming this movie was his favorite experience because no one on the set looked at him strangely for his size which is something that happened to him a lot. The movie meant so much to him he made all his wrestling friends watch it with him
He apparently kept struggling with his lines during his first scene, so Mandy Patinkin got up and slapped him
He got all his lines right first time from then on

@@dgrmn12345 I spent 24 years in the U.S. Army, almost exclusively in combat units. You can walk into any unit, even special operations units, and just say "MAAAWWWIAAAGGEE!" and you will have the hardest, toughest men you've ever seen replying "MAWWIAGE IS WOT BWINGS US TOGEVVUH TODAY!" This movie is universal currency, I don't care how big and tough you are, you love this movie.
Grandpa's "As you wish" at the end gets me every time.

There's a theory that the grandpa is the current Dread Pirate Roberts, and he's reading the book to his grandson in preparation for passing down the mantle to him.

This is a rare perfect movie in that it doesn’t get old, the comedy still hits, and it remains fun every time you watch it. Just something about this movie that can’t be repeated.

I agree. Aside from, well, everything about it, I would point to one thing specifically, in three words:
Andre.
the.
Giant.
There has never been, and will never be, another Andre. The guy simply WAS Fezzig. There are other big dudes out there, but none with the same imposing stature as Andre. 7'4" tall, over 500 pounds. That FOREHEAD. That deep VOICE, with that thick French accent. That HAIR and those SIDEBURNS. Those HANDS!! That absolute BULK of a man. Who also happened to be the sweetest, kindest, gentlest, most teddy bear-est human imaginable. Acromegaly is no joke; it left Andre in pain, and lead him to an early grave. But it also made him who he was.
As much as the entire cast were *perfectly* suited to their respective roles and played them to perfection (and the director, music, sets, fight choreography, etc), I could almost see any role being re-cast, except for Andre as Fezzig. It simply cannot be done without him. R.I.P. Andre.
So true! And Cary Elwes (the main actor) said this about a plan to remake it: "There’s a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one."
According to Cary Elwes' book "As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride", Billy Crystal (Miracle Max) had written lines which he just ignored from the start. Instead he ad-libbed and was encouraged to do so. The director Rob Reiner eventually 'kicked' himself off the set to direct from monitors elsewhere, because he couldn't keep from laughing out loud. In many of the shots the "mostly dead" Wesley was played by a dummy because Cary Elwes had the same problem. Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya) managed to keep a straight face, but complained of a bruised rib after, from clenching up to hold in the laughter.
That's a great book. I can't believe that Cary Elwes filmed most of this movie with a broken foot!

I saw Carey Elwes at a comic convention when he was selling his book and I remember him saying Mandy Patinkin cracked a couple of ribs from laughing.
Why did that final scene make you tear up? Because it's only when we're older that we realize how special and important grandparents are to us when we're young.
The movie goes to great lengths to equate "as you wish" with "i love you" just to end it with grampa's loving smile uttering those words to his grandson. How can you NOT feel the feels inside?!

Mandy Patinkin (Indigo) bruised his ribs from trying not to laugh at Billy Crystal improving during the Miracle Max scene! Such a GREAT movie!
And they allowed him to improv everything.

I think the “dream of large women” was more like him saying “sweet dreams” and being earnest about it because he respected him.

I always liked the possibility that fezzik is actually part of a giant race. Somewhere in the world is a country or an island where everyone is huge and he's kind of wishing him thoughts of his home- with big women😁
Infinitely quotable, charming, funny..and grandpa's closing "As you wish" makes me a bubblering wreck every time.

One of many mysteries that are answered if you read the book. Basically, in order to be a prince, Humperdinck needed to marry someone who was already a princess. So they purchased a nearby hamlet and searched the nearby towns for a beautiful maiden to be installed as princess of the hamlet. Since she was broken hearted and decided she would never love again, she agreed to the marriage as a business transaction, her family was made (relatively) wealthy and powerful. That's actually the origin of the name, the law required that the prince must take a Princess Bride.
Of course Cary Elwes playing Wesley is a good actor. Unlike other actors, he can speak with an English accent!

He's had an incredible career and is supremely talented and so good looking that even the straightest of men can only say "damn, that's a handsome man", it baffles me how he never got to top of the heap movie star level.
I've always loved that movie. Mandy (Inigo) had just lost his father to cancer, when he said that line, "I want my father back you ________." he channeled his grief and excised his pain. When watching you can feel it. I cry every time..

@Oswald Smith It's normally the right thing to say if the person is being erratic. As far as Buttercup was concerned the pirate had no reason to be that angry at her about somebody she loved and he had no reason to be on her that way.

The Princess Bride really is a perfect movie even after 30 years.
One of the reasons why I believe this movie was so great is because William Goldman, the author of the original book, also wrote the screenplay for the movie.
He adapted it but yeah
This is that rarest of things: an absolutely perfect film.
The Princess Bride is one of the most timeless classics ever made. It's based on a book, amd was supposed to be a satire of Medieval Fantasy Romance movies. Except that it became the gold standard for genre it was making fun of.
It was absolutely not a satire of medieval fantasy romance movies. I could see someone who has only seen the movie thinking that but the books is quite larger in scope. Shifting between hard literature to fairy tale to history. If anything it's a satire of books that are boring, don't engage the reader. Books that prattle on. You could say it's a satire of bloated literature. But it plainly tells you in the book that it was made as an homage to the adventures of Goldman's past. The idea for the core of the book, as well as voice, came to him when his kids asked him to come up with a bedtime story. The frame device of the book (the faux hard literature part) came as a solution to mixing a traditional tale with modern writing techniques.
But really it's a story about stories. How they get passed down over time. One generation to the next.

I don't know if you noticed, but every injury Inigo inflicted on Rugen during their duel mirrored wounds Rugen had inflicted on him. Both cheeks, both arms, and finally the stomach.
I've seen this movie at least a dozen times. Never fails to hit me right in the feels. Absolutely the perfect cast. I am a little surprised that you didn't know Mandy Patinkin, though. The scene where he kills the bad guy was shot shortly after Patinkin's father died of cancer. He channeled that feeling of rage about losing his father into his "I want my father back, you son of a bitch" line, which made it so much more impactful.

I imagine most reactors, after releasing a video, get flooded with recommendations that are of similar movies. My guess is that won't happen with this video; The Princess Bride is a one of a kind movie. There's nothing else quite like it.

During filming, Andre the Giant let out one of the biggest, loudest, longest farts in the history of mankind.
Everyone was stunned into silence. Rob Reiner, the director asked him "Are you ok?"
Andre replied "I am now boss"

This movie was one of my fencing instructor's favorites. The dialogue in the first fight scene includes references to actual schools of fencing, and while the fight is definitely showy stage combat, their form and footwork is excellent. It very much harkens back to the old black and white swashbuckling movies, where half the actors were classically trained.
Yeah, no CGI, no stunt doubles, that's actually them.

Bob Anderson trained them both, and there are very few wide shots to "hide" the faces of the stunt performers because the stunites are only in a handful of shots, but the rest is Cary Elwes (Wesley) and Mandy Patinkin (inigo). Bob Anderson is also responsible for a few of Errol Flynn's films back in the day, as well as doubling Darth Vader for the Original Star Wars films and he was the lead swordmaster on all three Lord of the Rings films.
It was my fencing instructor's favorite too. He used it as an example in differentiating stage, sport and real fencing.
Yeah, when everyone else got to rest between takes those two were dragged off for fencing practice. It was the last scene they filmed.
It took them a week to film the three minute duel.

Cary Elwes is a fantastic actor. AND they had really great chemistry in this movie. So, right on both counts.
What's interesting about this is when Montoya said "Give me back my father you son of a bitch" his father had recently just died of cancer. He said in interviews that he imagined like he was saying this to cancer itself and that's why his line is so heartfelt. His father has recently died and the emotion was still very raw.
I find it funny that Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya) actually broke a rib from holding in his laughter while filming Billy Crystal's scene

@@jmgonzalez4 I don't think it was broken. In think he strained a muscle. It's been a long time. Wesley is mostly a dummy because he couldn't stop laughing, and even the director left the set because he kept ruining takes.
You teared up because you are human just like me...this is why a movie from the mid '80s is still beloved 3 decades later. It portrays a common bond among us.
Watching someone see The Princess Bride for the first time is one of the great joys of life. I'm so glad you shared your experience with us.

When I was a child I thought the grandpa saying "as you wish" meant that he WAS Wesley. Like it was a big twist ending. I guess I thought the middle ages happened 80 years ago as well

The grandpa is Peter Falk, he had a successful detective series called Columbo and it aired between 1971 and 2003. However, the film Colombo was already broadcast on February 20, 1968! 😎👌🏼

It is funny when they brought the actors back for the 20th anniversary, the actress Robin Wright had a huge crush on Cary Elwes and still brags she got to kiss him.

I think you may have been talking through some of the best lines. Interesting fact: Mandy Patinkin’s father just died of cancer, and in the scene with Count Ruben, he channeled his rage and loss as though he were killing the cancer that killed his father.
There's a clip on youtube with him talking about it. It's amazing.
"What's going on with the top of her hair??" It was called "the 80's." Hair was fluffy. We had a thing called "mousse."

Fun fact: the score for this film was composed by Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist for the band Dire Straits who had hits with songs like Sultans of Swing, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life, Brothers in Arms, and Tunnel of Love

I once had someone read this book to me. It was indeed a special experience.
You should watch Stardust, then read the book. Both are lovely and dark and sad and beautiful and full of wholesomeness.
It's a great movie. Very surprised you hadn't seen it yet. There's been talk about doing a remake of it. I can only imagine the horror that would produce in our current age of crappy remakes. I don't think there's any way to improve upon this version of it.
To quote Cary Elwes on the subject: "there is a shortage of perfect movies in this world. It would be a pity to damage this one."

@@Mastermint But the whole point is she's the classic helpless damsel in distress in constant need of rescue. She started off with a little personality tho. She jumped into the water trying to escape, and she told off the pirate, even pushed him down the steep mountain before she knew it was Westley. After that she was totally helpless though.
As a Spaniard myself I love Mr Patinkin's spanish accent. And acting. "Hola, mi nombre es Íñigo Montoya, tu mataste a mi padre. Prepárate a morir."
My dad made a printout of that quote in Spanish as an office decoration, with a picture of Iñigo, unfortunately someone in the office hadn't seen the film and thought it was a threat of some sort!
Andre the Giant suffered from acromegaly (basically out of control growth hormone) and was in a lot of pain during the filming of this movie. He passed about 6 years after it's release. Robin Wright tells a very sweet story of Andre covering her entire head with his hand to help her keep warm. He was in such pain she was held up by wires during the scene where he catches her because he couldn't handle her petite frame and drove around the set on an ATV because he had such difficulty moving.
10:00 he was 7'4 and weighed 520 pounds according to google. Supposedly he was able to drink 119 beers in one sitting. or another time a dozen bottles of wine. I saw something that said one time he drank 150 beers in a night, but it seems like it's probably exaggerated. I did hear in interviews with people that knew him who insisted that he could drink 50+ beers in a night no problem.
There is one story about how he got too drunk and passed out on the floor of a hotel lobby. They just had to cover him with a blanket because he was too big to actually move. Don't let the alcohol consumption fool you, he was a super nice guy. He may have been a Giant but he was a Gentle Giant.

he wasn't quite that tall or quite that heavy; those were the figures used in wrestling appearances, and all wrestlers are announced with exaggerated heights and weights. he was still enormous tho. if he weren't working with other wrestlers with exaggerated heights and weights, there'd be no need to lie about his.
It's so nice to watch a movie that is sweet & gentle, unimposing & delivers a happy ending for the sake of simplicity. The story never tries too hard or takes itself too seriously. In a world mired in cynicism, "The Princess Bride" is truly a respite & such a welcome change. It's a great movie to watch every once in a while if for no other reason than just to smile.

For the most part, I am indifferent or okay about Hollywood making remakes; mostly because some turn out awesome (like the Apes trilogy.)
However...of all movies, THIS is one I FORBID Hollywood from remaking. None of today's actors can match the original cast, to be frank
I was firmly against it, and then someone suggested that they should bring back Fred Savage as a father telling the story to his child, and I went, that's actually a pretty good idea...

Here's some trivia for you...The evil "six fingered man" is Jamie Lee Curtis's real life husband!😀😊
He is also the lead guitarist for spinal tap. His fingers go up to 11
And an amazing writer/director in his own right. "Best in Show" and "Waiting for Guffman" are classics, and he was on SNL for at least one season. Plus, so many other comic greats like Billy Crystal, Carol Kane (SO great in 'Kimmy Schmidt'), then there's National Treasure Mandy Patinkin, a pre-"Saw" Cary Elwes (among so many other movies/TV shows) and Robin Wright who just directed her first film that was at Sundance. A true classic.
@@juicycantona350 That's my favorite trivia ever. I'd loved both films for years, and when someone pointed out they were both Christopher Guest and his fingers going to 11. It was a revelation. Since both are Rob Reiner movies you cannot convince me this wasn't on purpose. Yes it's based on book written well before the movie(or rather much older historical document)... but you can't tell me Rob didn't see the character description and immediately wrote in Christ G. In his notes.
He’s also a British baron, who used to be in the House of Lords before they restructure the membership requirements.
And Prince Humperdinck is Susan Sarandon's ex-husband.

The stories of Andre on set are pure gold. Everyone loved him, you should check some on interviews of other actors.
For example, he was a real foodie and hated the catering so much he rented a truck and used to go shopping for real nice one, filling the truck and sharing with everyone on set
One of my favorite Andre the Giant stories comes from Hulk Hogan. After he discovered an authentic French restaurant in LA (with real French owners), Andre would spend the entire day there ordering the ENTIRE menu. Hulk Hogan guessed that Andre was probably homesick and wanted a reminder of home.
I was 6 years old when this movie came out in 1987. I've loved introducing this movie along with many other amazing '80s and '90s movies to my nieces and nephews. I'm 40 now and I still watch it every year 🙂
This movie was based off a book and from what I've heard this is one of the few times where the movie is better than the book.
William Goldman adapted his own novel, as I understand it, so he probably had a lot of time to consider ways of improving on his story.
I love the book just as much.
"A Scanner Darkly" is another of the rare movies that is better than it's book
Nope. The book is better. It's among the most underrated if all time. Most people read it and get confused by the beginning, which is about Goldman adapting it (the grandpa section of the movie shares the theme). People miss how absurdly brilliant that is. I've never seen it done so well.
Behind that the prose, the pacing, the beats, the character work and narrative are all top class. But again, people don't read it for what it is.

Being 12 years old when I first saw this in 87, this movie DEFINED a major part of my life. I STILL quote it almost daily.

I read the book first and it was really good. I was a bit skeptical about the movie, since adaptations are usually poor, but it was one of the best ever. It turns out that the author of the Princess Bride, William Goldman, was an Oscar winning script writer (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and for The Princess Bride, he was hired to write the script so he was able to adapt it for film exactly the way he wanted.

Robin Wright (Buttercup) told a story about filming, and being cold and shivering. Andre noticed and simply placed his massive hand on the top of her head in a gesture to help keep her warm. It didn’t keep her warm but she did talk about how kind hearted he was to everyone even though his massive size made him really intimidating. I think this story came out after Andre died, but not sure on that.

Cary Elwes is so cute in this movie. I also like him in Robin Hood Men in Tights. It's hilarious you should check it out.

andre wasn't 7'4". he was only announced as such at wrestling appearances. all wrestlers are announced with exaggerated heights and weights.

I remember watching this movie when it came out. I was around 16 or so at the time and had just lost my Grandmother. That loss was the first time I'd lost a close friend or relative and it hit me pretty hard. When Grandpa looks at his grandson and says "As you wish..." I bawled like a 3 year-old. To this day over and above any other film this one is my favorite (and this is coming from a Star Wars fanatic who saw the original release dozens of times in the theater back in 1977 by begging anyone and everyone I knew who was going to see it to take me with them). Also.. .the older I get, and the more I rewatch this (one of my two favorite films), the more that ending with Peter Faulk giving Fred Savage the "As you wish." is just... perfect. Gives me the feels more every time. Absolutely perfect ending to the film. Comedy, action, love, adventure, heart, this movie has something for everyone.
One of my favorite things I’ve ever done with my son was to read him the book, over the course of somewhere between a week and two weeks. It was amazing to see how much he got into it, to share in his discovering the story for the first time, ever, almost like I got to fall in love with it, all over again.

Robin Wright who played Buttercup said during the 25 year cast reunion that she had a major crush on Cary Elwes so the chemistry between them is pretty genuine.

This is my absolute favorite movie, has been since I was a kid. When my husband and I were married I walked down the aisle to Storybook Love (the theme song from the film). Last year in January I was blessed enough to get to meet Cary Elwes (Westley) and had a full on melt down.
This really is one of the few movies that is damn near perfect in every single way. The cast, the story, the music, the execution...I really cannot mention a single thing about it that´s even remotely close to bad.
I'm glad you liked it, it's perfect movie. I love the whole cast especially Peter Falk (Lt. Columbo). Mandy Patinkin has done some great work, I love him in the TV series "Dead Like Me" which only ran 2 seasons on Showtime. Billy Crystal was funny as Miracle Max and Carol Kane as his wife.
Fun fact: The line "Ho there!" "I do not budge, keep your ho there" is a particularly sneaky joke, since Inigo pronounces it like "joder", the Spanish word for "fuck". Clever little pun there.
Great reaction! I watched this film for the first time when I was a kid in school. Kids with perfect attendance were able to have a pizza and a movie party. The teacher chose this film. At first, I was almost annoyed. I mean, of all of the films, she chose an old movie that I thought was little more than a silly fairy tale. However, I remember loving it! It really was a nearly-perfect film. I don't even mind that it seems to have been made on a low budget. It's a fantastic film!
Westley was played by Cary Elwes (you may remember him as Robin Hood in "Robin Hood, Men in Tights"). Buttercup was played by Robin Wright. Inigo Montoya was played by a very young Mandy Patinkin. Miracle Max was played by Billy Crystal and a *lot* of makeup; his wife Valerie was played by Carol Kane (ditto on the makeup). Vizzini was played by Wallace Shawn, who is almost as smart as Vizzini is stupid; he's a Fullbright Scholar.
The little boy is Fred Savage and his grandfather was played by Peter Falk, of "Columbo" fame. The film was directed by Rob Reiner.
Funny thing is last year, I read the book this is based on, but not just the book, but the extended edition. It is amazingly dark.

The word you’re thinking of is “honourable”. Even though they are antagonists, they treat each other with honour.
I love this movie. So quotable. And that "As you wish" from the grandpa at the end always gets me because we know it means "I love you" and so does the grandson.
I love the way the grandpa says 'as you wish' to say he loves his grandson, too.
