What Happens When You Open the Falcon Wings Doors of the 2022 Tesla Model X After a Snow Storm

- I park my 2022 Tesla Model X outside of the garage over night during a snowstorm to find out if snow will enter the X when you open the Flacon Wing doors. Also will the snow melt the exterior when you turn on the heat and the heated seats.

If you’ve got a Telsa and need to park outside in snowy weather, turn on the climate control from the app and wait for the snow to melt off of it. It’s silly not to use the feature. A gas car can use a ton of fuel before it gets up to a temp to melt it, but a Tesla is going to use about 1% battery for a whole hour of running the heat while parked.
I use the app all the time for that even tho its parked in the garage. I didn't use it in this video cause I wanted to test the doors in this crumby weather. I love the app. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
@@teslaownersperspective1968 I get it. The comment was more for the viewers who don't own a Tesla.
Having an electric car that you can turn the heat (or cold air) on, even when it's in the garage is such a perk that people who have never owned an electric car don't realize.
@@DaivG Especially when you live in a very hot or very cold climate. Having the ability to control the interior temp before even stepping foot out of your house is an amazing feature. One of my many favorites!
@@teslaownersperspective1968what a lie. My model 3 uses about 5% for about 15-30 min heating and it has the new heat pump.
I've just had roughly 20" of snow here in Toronto and parked both the Y and 3 outside. It was brutal brushing so much snow off. Love this demonstration vid. Falcon wing doors did really good job keeping snow off. I know the rear hatch will let snow in based on my own experience with the Y and previous SUV's. Thanks for sharing.
I was surprised that the Flacon Wing doors didn't create a huge mess. Ive never parked my cars outside of the garage before so it was learning experience for us all. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
@@teslaownersperspective1968 Btw, I love your video demo with another person holding the camera. Makes your life so much easier and gives better perspective to viewers. 👍
@@PQV-8898 I agree! Unfortunately my camera person is usually in school but since today is a holiday she helped me with todays vid. Its not easy making these videos by myself but I sure enjoy making them! Thanks for watching!

It’s a good video and test of the worst-case scenario. A person really wanting to prevent snow from falling in though, would have done it a bit more conscious of the weather, specifically, not opened every vertically-raised door simultaneously while the wind and snow is still falling, but regardless, it at least shows possible, and helps people to create scenarios where snow doesn’t fall in… such as one door at a time, and wiping off most of it before getting in. ;)
Very helpful. Would you get the Model X again after seeing this?
I was surprised to see snow fall in through the back when you opened it. That wind tunnel of snow between the falcon wing doors was pretty epic. Thanks for sharing. I’ve always wondered how the X would do during the snowy season in the northeastern part of the country.
I was surprised as well. The X can hold its own in the snow. After filming the X with the falcon wing doors open I didn't realize how insane it was till I watched it back. It was pretty loud. Thanks for the comment and for watch!
I have noticed that the frameless windows on the front doors can often get stuck during the winter. We have a cabin in the mountains in Norway, with parking outside, and I have to preheat the car well in advance every time we go for a drive to make sure I do not break the window or the door.
Pre heating is a pretty good solution though, but I do wish Tesla would have frames on their front door windows.
Im not sure ion they will. Might have something to do with aerodynamics of the cars. Great comment and thanks for watching!
I absolutely hate the frameless doors that tesla uses and I absolutely hate their door handles. I wish they wouldnt try and be so quirky at all times
@@matthewp1682 I think it can be polarizing but I don't mind it. I like that they're trying to be different and do things differently. Im not crazy about other things like long appointment dates, bad vehicle inspections and not committing to delivery dates. And thats just a few things there's plenty more.
Thank you for making these videos, my friend, for 2 years I have liked the tesla and more the x 2022 but thanks I already subscribed to your channel I also put a like thanks and take good care of your tesla bye! nice day!

I see you already went through a Chicago winter with your new X. Curious, have you experienced a loss in battery range in the winter? I know Ys are losing 30-40% of range in cold weather. Any help appreciated. Thinking of ordering g a new X Myself- in Chicago too
I actually moved from Chicago. Im in upstate NY now. And yes the cold weather really can zap the range. Also the HVAC and music as well.
Thanks for your detailed videos, they help me waiting for mine. Ordered my X plaid in may and est. delivery is end of 22… so hope to see some more videos of yours :-D
Hopefully you'll get lucky and it'll come sooner than later. Thanks for the compliment and for watching!

Thanks for the video! You reminded me of just how much I don't miss the snow. Been living in Florida 🌴☀for a couple years now and will never go back that ❄
You're so lucky. I was in Florida a month ago and I didn't want to come back. Thanks for watching!
Some people get upset, angry and consider it as design flaw when rain and snow fall inside the Tesla when wings open up. But anyone who owned a minivan and have a bunch of active kids living in Midwest to Northeast US will tell you that in winter, fall and spring when that slide door opens on the van all kind of crap will get in.
Thanks, we’re enjoying your videos. Waiting for our X to be delivered sometime in October 2022, already got pushed back from May.
Ive gotten so much hate about opening the falcon wing doors in the snow. I had to express every time that it was done to show what would happen if you opened the door with snow. Glad you get it. Hopefully Tesla will ramp up production so that you can get your X sooner than later. :-)

You deserve a cup of Hot Tea for this video-Great Video as usual!
Ha! You forgot the cookie. Thanks for watching!
The old ones before refresh had problems opening the falcon doors. Seems like they fixed the leak it used to get with rain coming into the cabin
This is awesome I live in Chicago and I’m looking for an SUV currently comparing the X and the Y teslas great video thanks!!
Hi. Thank you. You can't go wrong choosing either Tesla. The Y will save you some money and the X gives tons of tech. Good luck in your choice.
thanks for doing the test

That was a fun test. Crazy. I live in the phoenix area so..... Its fun to watch someone in snow
I hate you! JK. I miss warm summer days. Cant wait for spring. I was in Florida a month ago and I love the weather there. Maybe Florifa will be the next move. Time will tell. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! Very clear and helpful.
Absolutely. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
This might be a silly question but these doors pinch kids fingers? Or is there a safety feature detector of some sort.
Hi Nora. Thats a great question. I actually dont know. You just gave me a great idea for a video. I'll post something this week and I'll include a test. Thank you.
Very adventurous of you to test this for us viewers with your beautiful Model X !! But I hope nobody else ever tries it again. Now please put that gorgeous car back into your garage and keep it sheltered from the weather. I can’t wait to order one!
The X is resting comfortably in the garage with the Model Y. I'll pamper the X and let her know she did it for the betterment of humanity. :-)

Thanks for doing these videos. I have a Black X on order and also have a White Model Y Performance!

Great video! How much did the battery discharge after heating the cabin for 1 hr?
I want to say that I just took a quick glance and I think it was somewhere around 3%. I should have written it down. If I do something like that again I'll make sure to jot down the percentages. Thanks for the question and for watching!
Just generally, for regular car doors, horizontal blowing snow or rain will enter for the brief time the door is open. This can be somewhat limited by a fast open and close of the door plus as small of a swing of the door as possible. The door is a horizontal shield. An umbrella overhead can block vertical rain or snow. To be expected.
The falcon wings seem to limit these options for horizontal, blowing intrusions during active storms . They go up and down at their own speed, so i cant do a manual quick open and quick close. They give vertical cover, but not horizontal cover when fully open.
After the storm, its like any door with built in runoff gutters, sealed until opened. Water runs off, snow slides off. I always brush snow off the seams of doors on regular cars to prevent snow from falling in. Should be no different for a Tesla with a long brush to get the roof.
FWD can also be partially opened really easily, creating vertical and horizontal cover when doing so. Takes a little bit to “slip in there” when they are cracked open, but you’ll get cover from every direction then.
Did you precondition the car before u did the video?
No. Just pulled out of the garage. Ive never preconditioned the either car regardless of the weather.
Cool MJ picture by the way. Thanks for the question and for watching!
Great video.
Thanks for the testing. Thanks for taking risk for your new car. Hopefully can see some more video on daily usage or issue, E.g. opening falcon wing doors at rainy day as a shelter rather than just speed of car
Ive been waiting for rain but all I've been getting is snow. Im hoping it starts warming up a little where the snow will melt and it'll finally rain. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
I've just discovered your channel and love your videos! There are countless videos of Tesla owners showing off the features of the Tesla, but your real life videos with practical considerations, e.g. how a Tesla interacts with different environments etc., are really useful. Thanks!
My dream is to one day own a Model X :-)
And just when you closed all the doors, I was wondering "Y'know, I wonder what would happen if you now turned on the heaters and seat warmers? Would the snow on the outside melt away?" And then you did exactly that!
Thanks so much for the great compliment. That’s all I’m trying to do. 😁
@Ryan the little mathematician Thank you Ryan!
Haha oh my god man that intro clip
Lol! You know I like to try start the video off with a bang. After filming it and watching it while editing I just couldn't resist!
Just wondering how it is to control the car on ice with the yoke? Is it easier or more difficult to control the car do you think? Are you still enjoying the X?
Its just as easy as a round steering wheel. We still love it! Thanks for the comment.
Why would anyone want to open the door without brushing off some of the snow first.
The weight of the snow is probably not good for the stress on the hydraulics and the door alignment.
Those doors are strong but should not be abused.
I did it knowing what the outcome would be but for the sake of showing what would happen I did. No Tesla's were injured during filming. :-)
Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Thanks for sharing. I think all the sensors to prevent falcon doors hitting stopped the door opening. Great video
Thank you!
You give detailed information on here. My next Tesla will be the X, Plaid, hopefully if they make it with the new 4680 battery pack.
Thank you so Much and thanks for watching!
Thank you for putting a lot of work to this test 😀. Every interesting contents. Do you have a way to control how wide you want to open the falcon wing doors? If yes, that would help to keep the snow/rain out, or at least there will be less of it fall in. I think rain fall is worst than snow😀. Thanks for the video.
The doors can be finicky. Sometimes they open all the way and others not so much. I think that the sensors can be very sensitive at times. I haven't had the opportunity to open them when its raining but I look forward to the testing how much rain will come in the cabin. Thanks for comment and for watching!
You should put the car inside or try to do something about the snow. I’ve seen many teslas drift because of the weight plus the snow making the car slip off the driveway. Maybe removing some snow off the driveway will help, but it’s best to just park it inside.
The snow is starting to finally melt. As soon as it does Im going to try it all over again. Thanks for the suggestion and for watching!
GREAT VIDEO! THANKS FOR EXPERIMENTING!!!
Thank you!
How does the Model X perform in the snow/ice conditions? Thinking about ordering one. Would love to know how it handles the winter
It's awesome. I have a few videos of driving it in the snow on the channel. I even have a playlist of the X driving when the snow is coming down pretty hard. Take a look at them and let me know what you think. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
That's Crazy! That snow!! Wow, we only got about 2" here in Charlotte NC. Wait until the summer, the door sensor won't fully open the door in direct sunlight!
Thats what I've heard and read. I'd rather take an unfully opened falcon wing door in the summer than a half opened falcon wing door in this brutal cold. Im over this snow already. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Bro is crazy 😂. Electric seats and screens and he opens the doors like nothing with that snow
HAHA. The car survived and is doing well.
Interested to see how (and if) Tesla fixed rain water from falling in when falcon wing doors open.
As soon as it rains I'll test that out. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
Can you do a video showing the falcon wing doors open inside the garage
I think that I might've demonstrated that in a previous video. I dont remember which one tho off the top of my head. I can also do a follow up once I get caught up with other videos that I'm working on. I'll get to it. Promise.
Thanks for watching!
when do you think we will be able to get one in the Uk?
That's hard to say. There have been so many production delays. I think the factory in Texas is going to start churning them out. If they do then hopefully sooner than later. If I hear anything I'll post it. Thanks for watching!

if you look on top in between the doors there is a sensor to tell the distance between the car and the height of your garage. it thinks there is something blocking it so it wont fully open the doors

Ive got the X parked safely in the garage right next to its cousin Model Y.
To be fair, every cleans the edge of the doors before opening the door cause in any car snow will fall inside
Why were you surprised that no snow fell in? Your doors were close all night… if snow falls in while your doors are shut, you need a service appointment.
lol the inside has to be soaked now? no?
Im afraid to touch the rear cabin. Its parked in the garage charging as I type this. I'll check in the morning. :-)
In fairness now, due to safe driving, anyone that knows the rules of the road which they should know that the driver has to have a clear view out through all the windows of car. As this rule needs to be followed it is the driver's responsibility to clear all ice or snow off all his/her windows prior to driving getting into the car and driving off.
As I live in Ireland we don't get that amount of snow and even when we get ice that has formed overnight on the windows, I clean it all off prior to getting into the car. This is done for road safety.
I appreciate your idea of making this video but is not realistic as the norm by anyone unless the driver is clueless and willing to not only put their life at risk but are putting other road users at considerable risk.
In Ireland is also is an offense to drive your car as mentioned above and is heavily fineable by our local Police with Penalty Points added to your Driver's License in such event of your failure to ensure clear visibility through all your windows.
Hi. Thanks for the reply. Here in the states it’s very similar to your rules of the road in Ireland as well. I made the video as a reference. Believe me I never drive a vehicle that can compromise my safety or the safety of others. 😁
Bit strange demonstration. Nobody will open a normal car door/hatch without removing the snow beforehand anyway. Just because the doors are automatic, it wont brush the snow for you.
Also, turn off autofold mirror and automatic doors during winter. They will freeze at some point. Sold my 2018 x100D today, waiting for my Plaid 🙏👍
I normally would brush the snow off but I did it to demonstrate what would happen if you didn’t remove the snow. I always keep my cars in the garage. Good luck with the plaid. Hopefully you get it soon. Thanks for watching.
jeez that looks miserable do you live in siberia

This video is further evidence of Model X abuse. My offer to have the X winter in Florida still stands. 😀

Ha! I took it right on there chin for everyone watching so that you wont have to.Thanks for watching!
Whichever the car, just don't be lazy and clean the snow off of your car. Anyway, it is illegal to drive with a pile of snow on the roof of your car.
Very true but this was for the video and not my norm.
now imagine putting a bike rack or cargo on top........ ohhh... that's right....
AAHHHHH
Im sure no one hopes in their vehicle before brushing the snow off
Just for the video.
Let's see if we can open the door after a 1 foot snowfall and see if we can get snow to fall in. Lets not knock the snow off the roof like any other vehicle, and see what happens ohh look a huge chunk of snow fell in!!! C'mon man!
That was the intention. I know if I knock the snow off the roof chances are nothing would fall in. I wanted to see what would happen in a real world situation. Thanks for watching!
most people would use a snow brush on a new car at least i would .
Hi Brad. I usually do as well. Thanks for watching!
Ridiculous even for a demo. If car had to remain uncovered in winter weather, first the heat should be turned on in an EV, engine started in ICE car - hopefully remotely. Snow removal should then begin before opening doors.
Yes I would never do that in real world situations. I did that just to see what would happen in the worst case scenario. It was actually fun making that video. I hope you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
Let's put the into the water and see if there's any water getting in... so stupid
Hi David. Thanks for watching.
Normal brush off their car first
gull wing is a dumb gimmick...so slow to open....all that extra hot or cold air or rain...normal doors would have been smarter. and the yoke is stupid...stupid ratios
Lol. Ive grown used to to all of it now. I actually like them after not being too crazy about any of it.
It would be wise to remove the snow on top of the falcon door and Trunk if you’re going to open it… its common sense…
The purpose of the video was to see what would happen if you didn't remove the snow and opened the Falcon Wing doors. I never leave my cars parked outside. They're always garaged. I did it for the purpose of the video. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
