Steve's Small Engine Saloon Hey quick question. I’ve been working on a 1989 Mercury 2.2 and am having trouble. I have cleaned every aspect of it including the carburetor. Each time I take the carburetor apart and put it back on, the engine will run beautifully for about 30 mins then will randomly shut off and not start again. Then, when I take the carburetor apart and put it back on same thing happens. Any suggestions as to why it stops working after a while and needs to have the carburetor played with each time?
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Hi Steve I have a 1989 20 hp long shaft outboard Johnson motor runs great but it takes 2 men and a boy to pull the cord . Is there any thing I can do to make it pull over easer ?
Ya know , The best thing about fixing a small engine is the "Adrenalin" felling you get before you pull that rope. And then it starts!!!!!!!! such great satisfaction. Awesome video Steve
I did that yesterday starting my pony motor on my cat d4. One pull start while the past two weeks I needed to use the 12 volt electric start motor for the pony.
Love your videos! I’ve messed with a few carbs the last couple months and learned a few lessons on my own and from you. The biggest lesson is don’t be afraid to take a carb off! For YEARS I didn’t do it because I thought it would magically be thrown out of adjustment. Troubleshoot down to a carb issue. TAKE IT OFF! CLEAN IT!
Steve, I just want to say thanks . Thanks, you are my hero, my mentor. You have allowed me to take care of my family, and I could never thank you enough. My dream is to meet you one day I am not so skilfully with computers, but I still learning been watching your videos for over three years now and still find you very humble and inspirational just know people around the world lo e you
Outboards that will not start are nearly always fuel problems. Junk in gas, lines, tanks and other sources always need filtering. I learned this a long time ago to filter out water and debris with an clear in line filter before the engine. Sure makes starting a lot easier. Great video....A Modelo especial moment.
I have an old '65 Johnson 9-1/2 HP Seahorse. I put a carb kit in, points and condensers, and an aftermarket fuel pump-the original is out of production. As long as I don't flood it during the priming stage, it'll start first or second pull. I love that old outboard. I also started using non-ethanol fuel in all my small engines on the advice of a friend. It has made a difference in how they run, or at least I think so. Thanks for all you do.
Tried this on my 1970 Johnson 15 horse which was taking 7 to 10 pulls to start. After the clean out, it starts on the first pull. Thanks for saving my arm.
Love your vids! I have that exact same engine! Yes, it usually starts by 2nd pull when properly prepped up by pumping bulb up, full choke and and all that. Being a one lung, it is a noisey rattle trap, but it is reliable. Also, if you don't expect to use motor for a few weeks or longer, disconnect fuel hose and run until it dies out. Choke it and start again till it dies. I've never had my carb off yet.
I have a 2002 NSF5A but it's a 5 hp. Basically same thing. I just resurrected it after its sat idle for about 12 years. Thats a really good tip. Do you recommend anything specific for getting this thing back into and useable condition?
I have a 6 hp 4 stroke mercury. It is the complete same engine and it is noisy as shit and shakes a lot but it is dependeble as hell and just keep going day long 👌
Thanks Steve, you have given me the confidence to have a go at fixing a few problems with my garden tools. Particularly the carburettor issues. Thanks again...
Steve, you are absolutely awesome and I have learned a ton of stuff from your videos. I bought one of those rotary tips for my power washer and it's amazing. I am very pleased. I also just scarfed up another power washer, used but reconditioned and tuned up...a deal at Lowes (only happened upon an easy talk with a manager-thumbs up to Lowes). The power washer has a Honda motor and came with a new gun, extension and hose. I will fire it up tomorrow and check on the engine and pump. I got it at such a good deal, I couldn't pass it up...already have 2 power washers. I can keep them at a couple places and don't have to lug them back and forth. Your videos have given me the confidence to buy this, knowing I can fix any problem that arises, thanks to you.
There I was in the belly of the great white whale (with my boat) and it had to start... thanks to Steve it started and I lived to tell this tale! Good video. I might have expected the low speed jet. I learned something. Thanks
I cleaned my old Honda 9.9 according to your other video and it went from a non-idling, stalling piece of crap to a fine tuned outboard. And my buddy has a 15 Yamaha that starts super hard, 10 pulls minimum, and I am gonna do his this weekend. You also recently saved me a lot of tinkering on my FS200 Stihl brush saw with that spark arrester business. Thanks for the content! If you were closer I'd buy you a case of fine Canadian beer.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Well, so much for good intentions. My buddy's outboard is a 2017 carbureted 15 HP 4-stroke. Somewhere along the way Yamaha decided it would be a good idea to do away with the manual choke for these motors and built a system called Prime Start. Apparently this thing is supposed to inject more fuel into the system instead of closing off air, So I started surfing the Yammie forums and found a LOT of people who have had problems with this system and there was no easy remedy anywhere that I could find except returning the unit to a dealer so they could pull out the parts cannon. Technology is great, but it should be refined before release into a popular platform. My old (around 1986) Honda carb was a breeze to clean and starts on the first or second pull every time using the proven manual choke.
With the Yamaha, I’ve read people take cowl off and put free hand over air inlet to simulate a conventional choke and pull. Once started and warmed, no more problems for the day. Why did they mess with simple system that worked???
When I have any issues with any of my lawn equipment you've been my first go to source and have help me save a pretty penny for myself and my brother, thanks Steve for all the great info and keep up the great work!
