    Those old style OMC red capped condensers like the ones shown in this video will burn the points everytime (they were made differently inside back then than today). They need to be switched to the New Black topped OMC condensers to help from burning the points prematurely. When I test them with Stevens St75 meter the red capped OMC condensers never pass the break down/leakage test which simulates high rpm's I always replace the red capped condensers to be safe. Hope that helps someone watching these videos. Great Videos love watching them.

    Excellent. :)
    I also run it without water (for a very short moment) as I don't want the mess in my shop.
    Tip: Find a matching socket and use a battery drill to turn the engine. It saves a lot of work.

    • @dttprice
      @dttprice 2 месяца назад

      Running it without water, even for a very short time, will damage the water pump impeller. I'm certain that T-Mike was planning to replace the impeller on this one anyway, so it didn't matter if he ran it dry for a few seconds.

    • @kalleklp7291
      @kalleklp7291 2 месяца назад

      @@dttprice Yes, I know. Normally I do NOT run without water. I had no option to do so then, so a quick spray with WD 40 did the trick. I pulled the leg and looked at the impeller shortly after. It's as good as new and gets to run another season. :)
      Btw...starter fluid can be used briefly but only then. It's a 2 stroke and it needs lubrication from the oil in the mix.
      Excessive use of starter fluid will break down the oil film on the cylinder wall and could cause a stuck piston.
      It's about the same "balancing act" of how long is a "short moment". ;)

I changed out new gaskets, cleaned the carburetor. However, it has problem with poor idling and surging. Any advice for possible cause? Thanks a lot,

    Good videos. I have a 1940 Handitwin that moves freely, but it hasn't been used since before I was born in 73. I need to check for spark...here's my question...would it be ok to pour a little 2 stroke oil in the cylinders before turning over the motor just for safety's sake? I realize compression has to be tested on a dry cylinder...so I'll do that first. Am I risking cylinder damage testing on a motor that hasn't run in a while? Thanks

    • @michaeljsimon
      @michaeljsimon  3 года назад

      Yes. I use WD40 to lube cylinders. Just leave plugs out and crank several times.

    I have a very old 1948-1949 Hiawatha 3hp outboard that I recently tinkered with until I finally got it to start up and run. However, it will run for about 30 seconds plus or minus and then cut off. Sounds to me like a fuel problem, but what are your thoughts? Any suggestions?

      Even turning the engine over, for just a little bit, will ruin your water pump, never turn it over or attempt to Crank it up without water hooked to it.... It will ruin it

    Hi… How come you start and run them without being hooked up to water?
    I’ve had my fill of American 2 stroke vintage outboards… I now only buy Japanese 2 or 4 strikes. I’ve restored numerous Honda “B” and “BK” 4 strokes…..bulletproof. Good job.
