How common are the exhaust leaks you have discussed?
@@dangottwald9298 pretty common on the 9.5s that have lots of hours on them.
Have the work was done B4 ya started the gears was already on n ready .
Are the “turtle back” OMC engines trouble-prone or are they decent engines?
@@dangottwald9298 great motors -just a different design-once you get them running they are great.
It's easy to fast forward a video.
By chance, after using the timer tool did you come back with the feeler gauge and see what the gap measured? Nice video, as always. Take care !
i put a light coating of oil on the part surface and press on the sheet of gasket material. gives a good outline as well. thanks for showing.

Great video Mike. With the cylinders lined up “opposing”, does this engine fire two cylinders at the same time like the later 1940’s 3hp ELTO’s? So two fire, then rotate 180 degrees & the other two fire, right? I can’t wait to hear it run for you! I know you will get it running for sure.
Mike, great video. It is most frustrating to reassemble something then have it not work the way it should especially when you know what you are doing and experienced in your craft. As you mentioned, taking a break and coming back to it always helps.
did you lube gearcase? sounded pretty rough when you were spinning it. if so what did you use, oil or grease? wasn't there an o-ring on drive shaft.

I was looking at your Episode #1, you have a compression gauge that has two sets of threads on the part that screws into the hone. Use the larger set of threads as I believe it is for the 18mm spark plugs. The smaller end is for the more normal 14mm threads.
Thanks for the excellent tip. I've got 2 of these. So far that hasn't been an issue for me.

Mike, Nice video. Watching the video I see that when you removed yoke on the end of the driveshaft, it looked like the washer was between the yoke and tapered roller bearing. You can see it as it falls down behind the yoke at around 3:06-3:25 of the video. I would assume that washer applies pressure to the tapered roller bearing or at least keeps the spacing proper. I'm not sure HOW you can get it to stay put unless you tilt the gearcase OR use grease to hold the washer in place.
I have been making gaskets for years for motors that dealers say are unavailable. Take your time and they will work very well.

I have a question for you I live in New Orleans Louisiana in marrero and I have a 9.9 Johnson outboard motor and I changed the fuel pump on it and the fuel lines and now it will crank up but it will not stay running at a crank up for about 10 seconds 15 seconds then kill what can be my problem if you can help me out I can I would really appreciate it

T-Mike take that exhaust off while you have it apart. It might be plugged with carbon or a mouse nest. Also check the exhaust relief holes. They are at the bottom of the muffler where the tube slips into the muffler.
Some old coils are they good or need replaced?

I have the exact motor except the Johnson version. I picked it up about two years ago along with a 1961 12’ Grumman Cartopper, an old Esso outboard, an old trolling motor, a a few old tackle boxes full of old lures, and rods, all for only $200! The guy that owned everything was actually the cello player for Frank Sinatra’s touring band when he came to the Philadelphia and Atlantic City areas! It would be pretty cool if all blue eyes himself was in my little boat with that motor!
I just purchased a 1957 Johnson 7.5 hp model AD-11, it has the same problem with being really hard to pull but it’s not seized. Do you think they would put grease in a lower unit back in 1957? I was actually thinking on emailing you but then this video came out and I’m excited to listen and learn!
mamyman check the shock absorber in the gear case. There is a spring inside of it and they are known to break. The thing gets longer and pinches inside the case causing the motor to pull over hard.
@ there is no shock absorber in the gear case, unless your talking about the pinion shaft and shock assembly?! Still that’s a robust part and I don’t see that being the issue, especially how clean my outboard is for the year.
I would still try to find some if he’s going to use that motor
I use transmission fluid and acetone 50-50 works pretty good. I put it in a spray bottle shake it up and give it hell. Those old paper coils always fail when sitting you will have to replace coils, condenser and points on all of them great job T Mike
I got me one!
I have a FD-11 I want to use on my 14’ Saturn inflatable KaBoat. Currently it has an extension for a 20” transom and is not burgundy like motor. I also have a 2015 Yamaha 4hp 4 stroke that is great for putting around. I am the same age as my seahorse 18 and would love to get up on a plane with this Beauty. Love your work and channel, couldn’t sleep last night watching. Thank You for sharing your knowledge and love for these motors.

Had one on a twelve foot semi V years ago. Sold it to a laborer on a job when I got my 16 with a 30hp still have that one 1992
