- On Monday night the Conservatives' plan to send refugees to Rwanda successfully made it through Parliament, and will become law after it gains Royal Assent.
Oli and Ava break down what happened on Monday, and what it means for the vulnerable people fleeing to the UK.

"it's not your question but it's my answer" is an unbelievable statement
seems sadly normal given the last decade
I'll try that one next time they question me on disability benefits (I work and an a wheelchair user)
That Minister is typical of the Tories. They only want their client media to question them. And he was being sexist.
Truly this is the worst government I've ever experienced
And wait till how low they will sink when the general election kicks off.
The UK is a signatory of the 1951 Refugee Convention which clearly states that refugees have the right not to be penalised for being in or entering a country without permission where this is necessary for them to seek and receive asylum. The Convention provides an international definition of the world ‘refugee’, which is a person in another country at risk of persecution in her, his or their own country. It sets out certain basic rights of refugees that are necessary for the enjoyment of asylum. These include the right not to be returned to a place where they are at risk of persecution.
Thanks for the history lesson.
I've got a Nigerian man In my spare room. What are you doing for the housing crisis
Oli is right when he says its obvious none of these politicians care about the humans in the boats
Logic time: All of the refugees to be sent to Rwanda have already been selected therefore it is not a deterrent.
😂
Logic time. You have little logic.
@@jstewart4205 can you point out the lack of logic?
@@user-sd3ik9rt6d Not that I agree with the plan but the detterent is to people thinking about illigally imegrating not people already here...
really? no shit sherlock
where did op say otherwise?
The issue isn't about the iniquity, inhumanity, illegality and illigitimacy of the odious Rwanda policy, nor ruling that night is day and black is white - no. The truly terrifying matter is that as of last night, the UKs Legislature has overruled the Judiciary, thereby breaking the Separation of Powers, the final safeguard to ALL of our rights, a principle that has been in place and sacrosanct since Henry VIII. That's what we have just lost - never mind whether the Rwanda policy is right or wrong. The HOC has just bitten a huge, debilitating, unprecedented and very significant chunk out of the Rule of Law of the United Kingdom. And that is really, truly sinister, and a massive step to losing more - or in theory, all - of our rights. If a PM can now overrule the Supreme (highest) Court of the United Kingdom, who can overrule the PM? The King no longer has that power, if he wants to keep his head. So as of yesterday, Mr Rich Sunkrat, surreptitiously assumed greater powers than ANY of his predecessors. THAT was the aim of the Rwanda ruse - to subvert OUR Rule of Law and weaken our rights. He doesn't care a flying fck about boats, asylum seekers, national reputation, legality or human decency. Beware !! The step taken yesterday is tantamount to merging democracy seamlessly into autocracy, and possibly fascism. We have just witnessed a VERY sinister change to our unwritten and fragile constitution, and nobody is discussing it, apart from a few lawyers and academics.
I have never been more embarrassed and ashamed to be British. This scheme is disgusting, Immoral and is clearly going to be ineffective. Where has the empathy and humanity gone? 😔
You could train 7,400 nurses for the money spent on the Rwanda scheme.
...But then you'd need functioning hospitals for them to work in (I don't mean the ones in Australia).
You could build a town and solve the housing crisis with the amount the NHS costs a week.
For £500,000,000 you could build 2000 MMC social houses outright or grant fund (between 30-50% of the full build cost) up to 4000 MMC social houses.
Jacob would know what gestapo cos play looks like
He also knows what a pencil cosplay looks like. Just needs to wear a pink fez to complete the look
I think the BBC needs to take a harder line on MPs abusing their position and insulting presenters. The BBC has a duty of care to their staff and they need to be more blunt to those who were like that MP on the Today show
The expat stuff is so funny to me, because a lot of them will still turn around and hate on immigrants without realising they are one. It really goes to show that, in their mind, "immigrant" just means "brown person".
'What do you mean I've moved to Spain and they don't speak English?!!
The absolute nerve of these foreigners!!!
Anyway, where's my chips, The S*n, the footie and Wetherstones?..'
A man with no legs applying for disability benefits gets more scrutiny and qyestionning than this 500m pound scheme.
I totally agree with Olly about how sickening the Tories fake concern about small boat deaths is. It makes it even more vile.
As a man with no legs, I completely agree.
All this debacle could’ve been avoided completely! During Brexit Boris the dummy had the opportunity to renegotiate the Dublin agreement as offered by EU but he decided NO and said “we’d have our own” scheme all too much of a hurry to “get Brexit done” …. Such incompetence is breathtaking.!!!
That journalist putting the reasonable and practical questions she thinks should be answered: she is also a member of the british public, a taxpayer, part of whose money has paid for this ridiculously expensive Rwanda policy. Therefore how DARE that Tory politician be rude to her when he is supposed to be a public servant representing and answerable to all British taxpayers she asks questions on behalf of!
When my aunt died her estate paid £54,000 in inheritance tax, about 3 months later they came after her estate again for 72p!!! Yet they are spending £1.7m per head for the Rwanda plan and I believe the agreement is the UK take some migrants from Rwanda !!!! HATE THIS GOVERNMENT and am starting to detest the UK in a major way but am not wealthy or talented enough to leave!!!!😮
How many migrants do you have living with you? My old man didn't have enough to pay inheritance tax but I still was able to buy a home.
Ed “Golden Shower Boi” Campbell is absent, working on his Mark Mingey material for Edinburgh Fringe.
I'm not sure what's more shocking; I'm agreeing with our wee Sami of the DUP re those who've served the British military. Or that a DUP member is being used as a good example on politics Joe.....credit where it's due Sami and the DUP for sticking up for Afghan asylum seekers!
LOVE PODCASTS HATE NONCES IT'S THE POLITICS JOE PODCAST LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!! 🎉
Oli showing his colours as an enthusiastic vexillologist is just 👌
This is final nail in Sunak's coffin. It wouldn't work and in a few months when the boats are still coming it will be obvious to everyone its not a deterrent and then he will say it needs more time. Sunak's out of time
Ava rocking the 2001 River Island style oversized jacket....I bloody love it. Keep up the look gangster
For the 'Fighting aged men' I've always heard people talk as if to mean that they are having a go at them for leaving their country at war rather than fight for it - drawing some kind of cowardice conclusion, so it was interesting to hear your take regarding a threat of insurgency.
American here...When the media here talks about "fighting age men" they are definitely meaning "angry young brown men, who will rape your daughters and rob your houses." People aren't scared of kids, women, old people, but young healthy men (especially if they are tan or darker) scare the piss out of white America.
You should do a spin off podcast about politics
It feels like it only went through because the Lords are largely elderly and just wanted to go to bed.
Instead of this stunt maybe just like, set up an actual legal route to fix the issue? Oh because then they can't get their media blitz.
Rwanda is another sad milestone in the decline of Brexit Britain.
Ah my sweet soul the decline of Britain happened a long time before we pretended to leave the EU
One of those days when grotesque political horror becomes reality - we should all feel ashamed
I must correct you on the ex-pat comments at the end. As a working ex-pat (Saudi Arabia, Oman, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, PNG, Caribbean, Ireland, Scotland etc) over 40 years and a retired ex-pat (Spanish residencia) there is not any situation real or imagined where I would return to Broken Britain. Having paid my parent's pensions through many years of voluntary and compulsory Class 2 NIC, I look forward to receiving my Triple Locked Pension in a few months, paid for by my sons. My three Ibiza flights from Alicante were booked months ago, look forward to seeing any of you in Pikes this summer.
Just to add, my earlier point is because Oli has such great insight and understanding i need to hear his actual views. The Calais discussion being a great example
.... though my favourit episode is the xmas/ new year p!ss up. Keep it up people, great channel
Came for the politics, stayed for Ava's outfit. Ava where's your jacket from girl?!? 😍
Spin off Podcasts on personal things about you - childhood, teenage years, fav place to travel, fav beer - you know the random streams of consciousness but on another level
Why are you both wearing Matrix jackets to film the podcast anyway, does Oli keep the office thermostat locked in his draw to save money?
Nice one Ava for doing your best to keep Oli from arsing about too much :)Loved Mingie and the rest of the chatter but save it for the Pubcasts
ALL POLITICS, NO PISS.
IT’S THE POLITICS JOE PODCAST LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!………WOOO!!
They are firing in all directions, with no plan, hoping things will fall into place.
A dark day 😢 #toriesout #rejointheeu #nooneisillegal
It's sunny up north...but it's even sunnier in Rhonda.
How many are you gonna house
The union jack is the butchers apron in many parts of the uk
Assume you meant many parts of the world (India, lots of the African continent, Ireland to name a few)
Any willing government could stip the boats overnight by setting up a refugee processing center in France and sending anyone who comes over to be processed there amd establish safe and legal routes for seeking asylum. I thonk Laboyr are afraid to say it out loyd because of how it will be reported in Tory press.
Lol, so many typos I can't be arsed to correct them. 😅
I identify as an Iranian ex-pat as even though I was born in the UK and have been told I'm a Tory with my posh voice, I've been asked so many times whether I like it in the UK, and I love it here. I have stolen someone else's job that they probably couldn't do anyway, but I have stolen someone else's house, hospital bed, school place, and GP appointment. I'll still insist on being called an ex-pat.
I saw a Sky interview with illegal migrants yesterday, most of them said they would not have tried to come if they knew they would be send to Rwanda.
I love the way sunak keeps saying we are a law abiding country
Hes off to San Francisco before they have counted all of the ballots on election night.
so which ones will make lot's of taxpayers money in there back pockets ££££££££
After bouncing between the Commons and the Lords the Bill took shape. Here it is 💩
Interesting conversation.
I did some cursory googling and found that yearly in the UK there are approximately:
610,000 births
667,500 deaths
70,000 unauthorized arrivals
So, the number of people entering the country via unauthorized boat crossings just about mitigates against natural population shrinkage. So anyone who does genuinely have a problem with our 750,000 yearly net migration figure should stop demonizing people crossing the channel in small boats and instead quiz MPs on their broader authorised migration policies.
Every year there are almost 700,000 international students studying in the UK. As far as i’m aware, these are included in immigration stats. If we assume then that they all do 3 year courses, that’s 233,000 of the immigration explained by bad policy and reliance on international students.
I’d like to hear a discussion on the logistics of covering UK & Westminster politics. How you go about deciding what to cover, lobby journalism, choosing where to send Ed to do talking heads etc
As a Brit who moved to the States, personally I enjoy the look of confusion on local's faces when I describe myself as an immigrant. I don't fit their image of an immigrant. Apparently I'm the wrong colour for that word and I speak English.
I mean I’d be well up for a History of British Politics from politics joe
Mortgage/renting spin off, could broarden it to financial talk specific around young people.
I heard that interview on radio 4 this morning by chance, Tomlinson was abhorrent. Oscillating between evasive and aggressive, absolutely shameful.
England must be so proud that their government has brought back the 1700's.
That Tory minister was incredulous.
Agree 100% on the putting a processing centre in France. If that happened then the government would not have anybody to blame for the mess they have made of the country. This government does not care about anyone but themselves
This has to be the first time Sammy has actually done something useful.
Would it not be a wonderful world if we asked a question of a politician and they gave us an actual answer, instead of skirting around it or answering a different question or just plain treating us like fools. They truly seem to believe that if they say something it must be fact and that we don't know what a lie sounds like. It doesn't seem to matter which party it is, we ask questions, they lie. I, as I am sure many other people are, am sick of it.
Honestly yous have such an energy you can have spin-off where you just talk about piss or about best kebab in Hackney, it's an amazing background always :P
Well said Sammy Wilson…
love podcast hate nonsense it's the politics Joe podcast ladies and [Applause] gentlemen
There is a distinction between expats and immigrants. Immigrants settle. Expats are on temporary work visas. Having said that, I was an expat for my entire childhood so my folks certainly weren't in any hurry to get back to the UK.
Holy shit... Sammy wilson talking sense..
We will look back on the days some of us were still having "civilized" conversations whilst wearing dead animal skin without realizing how barbaric that actually is.
OMG that minister is a disgrace what on earth was that about
Do they seriously think if we had to into another war with boots on the ground we would get people volunteering to help our troops? Why would they given the shabby way they treated the Afghans?
Sammy Wilson the politician for people that wash paper plates
The Rwanda bill has not been tested yet. If it succeeds in a few weeks time and the flights are able to take off, then the UK government doesn't have to leave the ECHR. Also let's see if it works.
Amazing
It's giving "Matron never dared speak to me like this"
This government is utterly disgusting
Sound technician losing it during that radio interview😂
I would have thought that this bill would be seen as toxic as it's been batted between both houses so frequently.
Book these two on the first fight that goes out.
37:00 I for one would quite enjoy a PolJoe Nazi-discussion episode
Wow house of commons looked packed
Disgusting way to speak to someone as a minister of this country
Spin-off podcast idea; The varieties of piss...through the ages
Well we need a PolJoe reacts to Robbie Williams at Knebworth video, so the spin off may as well be a reacts to... series!
Journalists questioning government ministers are supposed to be incredulous... its the whole job...
Ava is still winning the battle of the leathers
My word Sammy being progressive.....a modern day miracle !!
3:00 In New zealand there's a rugged chocolate biscuit called "Afghans"...
As a child I heard of the biscuit before I heard of the people... So everytime someone says "Afghan" I think of the biscuits... If you ever get a chance, try one, there nice.
Please do a spin off podcast on the Stasi. Thank you.
Ava looks like a goomba from the Super Mario Bros movie in that jacket.
Did the 3rd leather happen? We must know. Inform the people.
Please do a history podcast.
I think the "military aged men" line is more about stirring up a sense of - why are they fleeing injustice rather than fighting for their "sovereignty" or future back home? That's how I have always read that line. I think this chimes with English people because of our military history and our long term sovereignty as a nation. It misses that there is often a lack of cohesive national identity in the countries which migrants are leaving, which is something that Britain does have, as an island and successful historical power.
i wonder what they would do as this issue collapses the country
£11k easily business to Australia
Damn I was into the vexilology chat until it got cut short
Brillaint Episode
Is there a uniform for this podcast now?
We need a spin off podcast on Edwina Currie
£63k for each person, not better thought of nor made a human being.
Huh???
@@jstewart420563k per person. People don’t value them as any more, nor are people seeing them as human beings
what about the canadian flag with a lovely red maple leaf. one of the few flags without a religious or poiticalsymbol. just the symbol of autumn in canada
Different political theories throughout history, how they shape our world, any political parties around the world that hold those ideas and philosophies....
Is the afghan issue not to do with avoiding any of these translators being able to give evidence against UKSF regarding execution of prisoners etc?
Ben Nevis is still a Kilometre too generous to the government. Try Everest and Sugar loaf Mountain in Rio or the Indosair TV tower in Indonesia. For reference closer to home that's over 50m shorter than Catbells in the Lakes or the Empire State Building with its Antenna chopped off.
If they did manage to stop 'illeagal' immigration and cut those 30,000 people off the top of Everest, it would still be the 6th tallest peak on earth.
32:25
Was JRM recruiting?
Union flag should have a dragon on it. Shambles Wales is not represented
Ava...why don't we get THEM...to tell us....etc... 😮 = THEM...= diminishing AF....
If they can afford all this leather we are clearly paying them too much.
