During the last minute or 2 of Sing Sing Sing, the connection between Lionel and Gene are magical. Gene captures the epitome of the pure jazz and no one....I mean no one ever came even close. FYI... Buddy Rich plays in a hectic jammed up concentrated roar that gives even the most seasoned drummer very little time to process. Buddy can’t touch Gene !! Even at 62, his final minute during Sing Sing Sing was and is beyond words. He’s The Godfather of drums....my mentor and inspiration for everything I do on the skins !!!! Can’t imagine how boring of a drummer most of us would have become without Gene in this World. RIP !!!
"Buddy can't touch Gene?" I am learning to appreciate Gene more, but shaking your head and waving your arms around isn't all there is to drumming. Buddy's technique was unsurpassed and went over many peoples' heads, including "seasoned" drummers. People hear with their eyes. and Krupa was very flashy, but not nearly the technician that Buddy was. - A "seasoned" drummer..."
It is not possible to have a greater small piece combo then what the goodman quartet was. Wow, everyone was the absolute master of their chosen specialty. Gene was the man.
Yes Lionel is an all round musician whether he play vibes ,piano or drums , and not to forget a tapdance solo on kettle drums he performed in the Famous Kurhause in Holland
I was in New York in the 1960s Somehow somewhere got chatting to Teddy Wilson with band members from the Caronia cruise liner We had a private hearing of him playing how I wished Id had a pair of brushes to accompany him !
Met Gene Krupa when he was playing at the Blue Note in downtown Chicago when I was a teenager in March & October of 1957. He was a great guy, and in October he asked what happened to the redhead I was with in March. I was now with a blonde. And I didn't think he remembered me. What a memory. As I was a young drummer, at that time, he was my musical hero!!
I saw Dr John in Melbourne; they'd saddled him with 3 rock musos who didn't understand his music, and a small electric excuse for a piano on an ironing board! It's the musicians disrespected.
Obviously, whoever was in charge knew how to mic an upright piano. Also, it helped that he had help from Lionel. It wasn't like the Oscar Peterson concert I attended, where Oscar had to carry the entire concert by himself, playing his Bosendorfer Imperial Grand with extra bass notes.
Unlike a horn player or even a drummer, you can't just pack a Baby Grand on an airplane. Pianists tend to play what is there. Whoever tuned and mic'd this one knew what they were doing at least.
David Christian i think his last performance before his death....all the reviers got together and the review was one worded....''masterful''.....always practiced several hrs. ea. day. listen to lionel hampton or peggy lee talk of him....an american icon of a human being
Hi Saw Lionel Hampton in the Usher hall Edinburgh 70/80's just after the Fire that destroyed a lot of his possessions. The Show was billed as Slide Hampton &Orchestra. He played a wonderful version of the Theme from the film The Hich and the Mighty. Fabulous !! Peter Wood Edinburgh Scotland
How I love this music and the three men playing! The only complaint is this, the form isn't as good that I am use to on RUclips. The picture isn't as good and sometimes there is static. Otherwise, I love this music so much! SYLVIA - FL
YOU GOT IT RIGHT, DODGEBOY, HE WAS A SHOWMAN AND HE GOT A LOT OF HIS LICKS FROM THE GREAT BLACK DRUMMERS WHO PRECEDED HIM, FOR EXAMPLE CHICK WEBB, AND BIG SID CATLETT, AND OTHERS, LETS GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.
p.s. I could name at least 15 drummers who were better than gene, but because of the color of their skin, and the fact that they didn't have movie star looks, did not receive the recognition that gene did, he knew how to milk the crowd, as they say.
alan cobain All musicians have their debts in terms of influences and Gene openly acknowledged his...but he didn't steal anything. Any real musician could identify Gene's sound and ideas. He was no slouch.
alan cobain chick webb the 1940's dwarf drummer is my altime greatestfavorite.they had to bolt down his drumset which he invented[the modern drumset configuration] so a pioneer and ella fitzgerald[16-17yrs old] fronted his band at the savory ballroom chick was the house band and battled benny goodman and won. kruppa later said ''chick cut us up''. each band had same arrangement. he and his long time wife adopted the teenage ella fitzgeral.....so i love his manhood as well as his musicship.youtub ''battle of the bands savoy ballroom, chick vs benny'' and watch, see which of the 2 great win, plus the lindy hoppers like frankie manning and.....??

you nailed it with the ham, BUT HE WAS NEVER THE WORLD'S GREATEST DRUMMER, THAT HONOUR FALLS TO BERNARD RICH, DRUMMER EXTRANORDNAIR, NEVER TO BE EQUALED BY KRUPA OR ANYONE ELSE.

I played a right hand duet with Mr. Wilson years ago. What a gent and a genius!
Gene: Always musical and supportive, despite being already ill at this time.
Gene Krupa did you ever GROW UP??? Same damned crazy kid forever!
9 minutes in and you're back in Carnegie Hall 1938 - fantastic.
Hampton was one great music talent; Eldridge, Zoot Simms and Krupa--none better.

It's worth watching to the end for a real nice reading of Poor Butterfly by Garland/trio. Just great cabaret.

What a great experience. Envy you
That's a great moment to back on.

So What did Happen to The Redhead? :-)
Steven Wiederholt one of them must’ve made quite an impression 😉
You had good taste, Krupa and Jo JOnes influenced all the great drummers.
The first tune is entitled UNDECIDED, composed by trumpeter Charlie Shavers.
Thanks Buzz for this clip of some of the icons still on their game.
Great Music And Fabulous Musicians
Bravo.
always a pleasure listening to the best
what a session ,sad that will never happen again.
The piece at the 9 minute mark is Sing, Sing, Sing, composed by Louie Prima.
A little gem of a clip.
Krupa showing his age but still a great drummer
GOTTA LOVE LIONEL HAMPTON. He is high-spirit music all the way:) This music is fabulous and soul-satisfying. THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD BUZZ STEVENS:)
Alf,affen,Eide Gene Krupa, var og ble mitt idol.!!
Es gibt Dinge im Leben, die sind eben einmal und nicht wieder bringbar.
Einfach toll! Erinnerungen an vergangene Zeiten!
I wonder why Teddy Wilson is playing a piano that you would find in someones living room. But he still makes it sound good.
Tite Trax Or maybe it's his own axe. Just sayin'.

Wilson could make any piano sound good.

Gene krupa hade allt, vilka rytmer..
Only one person missing who could have made it even better. Their boss, Benny Goodman.
You are forgetting your namesake Charlie Christian
David Christian i think his last performance before his death....all the reviers got together and the review was one worded....''masterful''.....always practiced several hrs. ea. day. listen to lionel hampton or peggy lee talk of him....an american icon of a human being
Goodman hired Teddy Wilson and Charlie Christian before Hampton. You'e right, he and they took a lot of flack and some actual danger
Tite Trax .................YUP!
+David Christian No. Hamp came before Christian.
I have always enjoyed this movie, but love this scene, professor replies, "whose Benny Goodman," says Benny Goodman himself.
Gracias por compartirlo.
Absolute magic.
great.ive been looking for this for yrs!

This is from an original VHS tape, that's the reason for the poor sound quality.

Cool
C'est chouette…
There may have been better drummers, such as Buddy Rich, but there was no better showman with the sticks than Gene Krupa, he put drummers on the map.
YOU GOT IT RIGHT, DODGEBOY, HE WAS A SHOWMAN AND HE GOT A LOT OF HIS LICKS FROM THE GREAT BLACK DRUMMERS WHO PRECEDED HIM, FOR EXAMPLE CHICK WEBB, AND BIG SID CATLETT, AND OTHERS, LETS GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.

alan cobain A HAM BUT THE WORLD'S GREATEST DRUMMER HE MADE THE GOODMAN BAND WITH THOSE FIRE KRAKER RIM SHOTS, AND NOBODY PLAYED BRUSHES LIKE HIM!
you nailed it with the ham, BUT HE WAS NEVER THE WORLD'S GREATEST DRUMMER, THAT HONOUR FALLS TO BERNARD RICH, DRUMMER EXTRANORDNAIR, NEVER TO BE EQUALED BY KRUPA OR ANYONE ELSE.
+alan cobain ya know, my great-grandpappy played the drums with him.
then he was a lucky son-of- a gun, alan
+alan cobain Buddy Rich copied Gene Krupa's drum set, but Buddy couldn't copy Gene's musicality, showmanship and likability.
Was that Mel Torme as the emcee?
Yes it was 👍
