GLENN . . .I AGREE 100% WITH YOU. THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE THIS ERA IN MY LIFETIME AND I'M 76. LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS COUNTRY, MUSIC HAS GONE WAY DOWN TO THE GUTTER. SAD, SAD, SAD.
@@ChannelMaster720 I agree totally: THIS WAS THE GOLDEN ERA for big bands and amazing talent. the "big music biz" has gone straight down hill since then and especially since the late 60's on. Jazz, Swing, and Big Bands were THE TOP of American musical talent. no doubt about it. Includes, of course, Sinatra and Mel Torme.
I saw Mel in Hobart Tasmania in '73....it was magical....he brought Butch Miles & rehearsed an Aussie band for 2 weeks.....the room held 300 for dinner.....it still sends chills up my spine when I think of his musicality & gr8 stage presence....I believe that I have seen the 'perfect' music performance.....he finished with a kick-arse encore of Roue 66....phew......I was a working rock & funk player then...and he changed my musical life......I left the gig and walked home in a daze....before realising that I'd left my car in the casino car park!!!!!.....I'm 71......
These great shows featuring incredible talent were enjoyed by all of us folk of a certain age, together, at the same time. It was a shared T.V. experience in our own homes to be discussed at work or school the next day. Lets' be thankful we can find it all on youtube including stuff we missed at the time.
Not really. Drummers belong in the background. That's what drums are and what they should be. A good drummer knows and respects that. Ringo knew that to stellar results. 99.9% of good drummers play solidly in the background. Gene can do what he does because he's Gene. If you really really loved Tiny Tim, you might be tempted to say "everyone should perform like Tiny Tim," but they shouldn't. Drummers that perform with enthusiasm can usually be recognized as copying Gene. I am a Krupa guy 100%, and I copy my style from Gene. I get comments similar to yours on my gigs...you look you're having a great time, you play with so much joy, etc, but really, it's all an act. What Gene does is an act. He's copying some older New Orleans drummers and he just has the schitck perfected and therefore it's so great, but the act falls flat for many other drummers that can't quite pull it off, it comes across as corny. Gene is Gene, other drummers aren't, and that's ok.
Those were the best days . There was gene krupa who started the drumming .every drummer wanted to be like gene . And then came buddy wow . And the 3rd one was Louie bellson with the double bass drums. This guy was as good as you can get . Because of them I became a drummer . You can see me on RUclips. FON MORCUS . Thanks gene krupa . Shore miss your great playing.
Gotta love'em! You're looking at the Best of the Best! I remember those days very well. Krupa was the first to put the focus on Drums! And Man, could that guy Drum! No one better!
Wow, what an incredible assortment of jazz legends. The ending piece was a drumming spectacular. I was born way too late, in 1969. I would have loved to be around in the 1940s when this music was the soundtrack of that period. I miss Johnny Carson's Tonight Show since that was a great place to display jazz like this.
Buddy was the greatest of all time, but nobody could match Gene's rhythm. With all the great drummers I've heard play Sing, Sing, Sing, nobody could quite capture Gene's swing. Like Jeff Porcaro's "Rosanna", nobody quite captures the ghost noting. Love 'em all.
I'll take Gene over Rich a thousand to nothing, starting with the fact that Gene is a nice guy. Gene does many things amazingly well. You might cover much of what he does so well under the catch phrase of "swing," but he does so much creative variety. The freezes, the surprises, the stutters, the creative use of non-drum surfaces like the hi-hat stand, the bottom hat, stick on stick, stick on bass drum, cowbell and woodblock, that zany splash cymbal, stuffing the sticks into the heads, stick on the back of the stick, how he varies each musical section so that his groove is always evolving on a given song, those surprise and delightful blistering wails, the varied sticking (as used to such great effect on Sing Sing Sing and still heard copied to this day), the single stroke rolls, playing in unison with the soloist (done under Benny Goodman's solo on Sing Sing Sing and very cool), the foreshadowing of themes (which you won't notice except on repeated listening, also used under Goodman's solo), and on and on. And all that's BEFORE you even mention the haireography.
When I was a kid in the 60's I was introduced to Lionel Hampton and it had a profount influence on my life. This special was a great musical influence with Gene Krupa and Lionel on the vibes!
GENE KRUPA & BUDDY RICH ARE SENSATIONAL IN THIS. LOVE LIONEL, TEDDY AND MEL! THESE 5 MAKE FOR A FABULOUS EVENING OF MUSIC. HOW CAN THE DRUMMERS DRUM SO FAST? AMAZING! SYLVIA - FL - 04-02-2019
With great musicians who love their craft like these guys, it doesn't matter how old they are, when the musical tools of choice are in hand, a full blown youthful exuberance is all of a sudden theirs.
Wow unreal . Those were the start of drumming. Gene and buddy. 2 of the best .and dond forget belson. The Louie bellson is the one that started the double bass drum. And what a nice men . I remember this i see on swedish tv.. i was 5... i want drums........ and my dad who was a good jazzdrummer.. said yes.... you be a drummer.. but practise and play all styles... open ear and see listen and what you not like.. listen again. I'm 85. I adored these guys and still do. AMAZING!!!! Imagine a young Mel Torme swinging with the greats of the Benny Goodman era.
All these men were true legends in their time. Today, all we have are legends in their own minds.
With the rare and uncommon exceptions , No truer words were ever written .... there is certainly not a shortage of ....legends in their own minds
THEY DON'T MAKE 'EM LIKE THAT ANYMORE. I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT I'M AS OLD AS I AM TO KNOW THESE GUYS AT THEIR PRIMES. MEL WAS A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE.
Krupa and Rich were just on a completely different level.

Well stated, my friend.
Awesome really doesn't cover it!? Utterly MIND-BLOWINGLY BRILLIANT!!!
This is REAL talent. No computers.
Always do forget what a solid drummer Mel Torme was.
he toured as the drummer at 16yo in Chico Marx's band...he was a child prodigy drummer...who could sing!!!
well now if my father were only alive to see this one today....this one's for you dad YAAAAA!!!
Fantastic listening! Tour great legends! Lionel Hampton Gene Krupa Mel Torme and Buddy Rich! Great talented people who are as very sadly missed
I was born too late (1954), but I sure love this music!!
playin like an absolute boss ! Krupa was just amazing...
Lionel Hampton SHREDS on the piano, man!
Drummers should all play with this much lover for the song. Look at Krupa's face. into it all the way.
Yes I know, he thoroughly enjoys every second, and there’s not a smidgeon of arrogance anywhere in his body. God bless him.

A spectacular jazz presentation by the original Jazz Masters....glorious
I wa clicking on the comments. I am blown away with the quality of these legons. I grew up with thismusic and still love it. They are the greatest.!!
WOW!! For some reason I had never seen Mel play the drums... He's solid!! Very impressive by all players!

Don't forget Mel Lewis. He ain't exactly chopped liver back there.
What we all would not give to be transported back in time to the 1938 carnegie hall concert and watch gene in action.
WOW ! Gene killin’ it on Sing Sing Sing

I was lucky enough to be at this taping. One thing I remember was that they had to stop tape when a somewhat tipsy Roy Eldridge fell off the stool!
